Netflix Reveals Bloody & Gruesome Look For Western Series That Takes Things Further Than The Yellowstone Universe
The trailer for American Primeval offers an extended look at Netflix’s upcoming Western series, which delivers more violence and death than Yellowstone has ever seen. Consisting of six episodes, and hailing from Friday Night Lights and Patriots Day director Peter Berg, with The Revenant‘s Mark L. Smith writing the script, American Primeval is described as a dark and gritty retelling of the exploration and birth of the American West in 1857. It features a familiar leading cast, including Friday Night Lights alum Taylor Kitsch, GLOW star Betty Gilpin, and Perry Mason‘s Shea Whigham, among others.
Netflix has unveiled the mature-rated trailer for American Primeval, which debuts all six episodes on January 9. The preview runs for about a minute, but it quickly becomes clear that the upcoming Western is nothing like the family drama of Yellowstone or the personal angst of spinoffs, such as 1923. The mature trailer declares its dark tone at the outset. The narration asserts that there is no God and not even anyone to ask for help. This is edited together with a scene of a woman getting struck with an arrow to the head, as blood begins to pool over. Amidst all the chaos, a woman and a child try to run to safety. Characters speak of having no choices and being forced to choose violence, though Gilpin’s character is incredulous. She wonders if it’s all necessary.

Netflix is releasing a new Western show in 2024, and the streaming service’s take on Yellowstone seems more gruesome than the Paramount series.
With a main cast that also includes Dane DeHaan, Joe Tippett, Jai Courtney, Kyle Bradley Davis, Dane DeHaan, Lucas Neff, Derek Hinkey, Saura Lightfoot Leon, Preston Mota, and Shawnee Pourier, the trailer for the Western series escalates in its violence. Rep. Soper tweets, deletes celebration of Jimmy Carter’s death | Western Colorado
The death of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on Dec. 29 drew reactions nationwide, ranging from celebrating his humanitarian work and quaint southern lifestyle to debates over his time in the White House from 1977-1981.
For Matt Soper, the Delta Republican representing House District 54 in the House of Representatives, Carter’s passing was cause for celebration.
Close to midnight on Dec. 29, Soper posted on the platform formerly known as Twitter, X, the following:
“Opened a bottle of Champaigne tonight! The world is rid of a despot! Thank God he finally called Carter home! The worst president in the history of the U.S.! We are still recovering! He destroyed the U.S. in such a way that even the 4th generation is still suffering!”
Soper deleted the tweet the next day after receiving backlash through a score of replies. He did not acknowledge the tweet in any follow-up posts, with his next post being a picture of a hanukkiah lighting to commemorate the sixth night of Hanukkah, tweeted at 2:52 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Daily Sentinel reached out to Soper for comment and received a text from Soper late Tuesday morning, reading:
“My only comment will be that my Tweet/X was in poor taste and while I am not a fan of fmr Pres Carter, expressing the sentiments I did I am very sorry for and apologise to the people of Colorado.”
Carter served as the 39th President of the United States after four years serving as the governor of his home state of Georgia, elevating in the Democratic Party through his support for the Civil Rights Movement, his military experience, his background as a peanut farmer and his focus on energy policy.
Carter’s administration established the departments of energy and education, but various factors — such as the Iran hostage crisis, an energy crisis and stagflation — resulted in a historic landslide loss in the general election to Republican Ronald Reagan in 1980.
Carter has been recognized just as much, if not more so, for his nonprofit and humanitarian work after leaving office, which resulted in the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. In the wake of his death, many have highlighted his interactions with the public in his later years, such as his tendency to not only fly commercially but also shake hands with all passengers as he made his way to his seat.
Soper’s tweet celebrating Carter’s death at 100 years old is not the first time he’s found himself at the center of social media controversy. In March 2023, Soper tweeted that Western Slope residents “need to be prepared for civil war” over several Colorado Legislature bills addressing gun laws. He then apologized for “some of those words” before the Colorado House.

Boebert departs 3rd CD, Hurd wins it | Western Colorado
When U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert decided to drop her second reelection bid for the 3rd Congressional District, switching to an Eastern Plains district where she knew she would stand a better chance at staying in Congress, things were upended on both ends of the state.
At the time, Democrat Adam Frisch was surging not only in the polls, but also in campaign contributions. With Boebert in the race, national political pundits put the 3rd CD in a toss-up category primarily because she had barely defeated Frisch in 2022 by a mere 546 votes.
Then Grand Junction attorney Jeff Hurd entered the race to challenge Boebert for the GOP primary, quickly gaining steam, pulling in unprecedented campaign donations for a first-time candidate, and winning numerous endorsements, including from former long-time supporters of Boebert.
While Boebert never admitted that she might have lost to Hurd in the primary, or barring that, to Frisch in the general, the writing was on the wall for many that her time in Congress could come to an end.
But then U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, a Republican, decided not to seek reelection to his seat after winning five terms in the 4th Congressional District, Boebert saw a chance to continue her political career. Buck later resigned that seat.
“I did not arrive at this decision easily,” Boebert said on a Facebook video in December 2023 announcing her switch to the 4th. “A lot of prayer, a lot of tough conversations and a lot of perspective convinced me that this is the best way I can continue to fight for Colorado, for the conservative movement and for my children’s future.”
Buck said he decided not to seek another term, and later left Congress back in March, he did so because he was tired of the vitriolic nature of Congress, saying there was so much bickering not between Democrats and Republicans, but among his own party, including Boebert.

“A lot of this is personal,” Buck said on CNN at the time. “Instead of having decorum, instead of acting in a professional manner, this place has really devolved into this bickering and nonsense.”
Buck said the previous year was his worst out of his nine years on the job.
That opened the door to more than half a dozen other Republicans to enter the race, all of whom were just as surprised to see Boebert enter it as candidates in the 3rd were shocked at her departure.
She ended up handily winning that GOP primary against five other candidates, taking in nearly 44% of the vote.
Boebert later went on to defeat Democrat Trisha Calvarese by more than 11 percentage points, far less than the 26% favorable margin conservative candidates have in that district.
Hurd went on to defeat Frisch by more than 5 percentage points.
He and Boebert, along with the rest of Congress, will be sworn in on Jan. 3.
