The Many Versions of The Magnificent Seven

The 2016 version of The Magnificent Seven continues a long legacy of retellings that began with the original 1960 film, itself a Western reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (1954). The 1960 film, starring Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, and Charles Bronson, became a classic in its own right, with its stirring story and iconic score by Elmer Bernstein. The franchise later spawned several sequels and even a television series in the late 1990s. Antoine Fuqua’s 2016 remake updates the story for a modern audience, combining high-octane action with themes of justice and unity, ensuring that the legacy of The Magnificent Seven continues to resonate with each new generation.

    Denzel Washington: A Legendary Career

Washington has long been one of Hollywood’s most revered actors, known for his commanding screen presence and extraordinary range. With two Academy Awards under his belt for Glory and Training Day, Washington has delivered unforgettable performances in films like Malcolm X, Fences, and The Equalizer series. Recently, he starred in The Tragedy of Macbeth, earning widespread acclaim for his powerful interpretation of Shakespeare. Washington is set to appear in the highly anticipated Gladiator II, directed by Ridley Scott, further cementing his status as a Hollywood icon who continues to take on bold and exciting projects.

Michigan State basketball beats Western Michigan, 80-62

EAST LANSING – The easy part is done, even if it wasn’t exactly a smooth ride.

An odd Monday afternoon start led to sloppy play at times, but No. 15 Michigan State basketball finished its nonconference slate with an 80-62 victory over Western Michigan.

Despite committing 17 turnovers that led to 14 Broncos points, it was another balanced performance for the Spartans (11-2). Jaden Akins scored 18 points, Carson Cooper had 13 points and six rebounds, and Szymon Zapala added eight points and nine rebounds. Jase Richardson, Tre Holloman and Coen Carr each scored nine as MSU shot 50% overall and finished with a 41-18 scoring edge off the bench.

Michigan State basketball dominates Western Michigan in a 80-62 victory

The Michigan State basketball team came out strong and never let up as they defeated Western Michigan with a final score of 80-62. The Spartans controlled the game from start to finish, showcasing their skill and teamwork on both ends of the court.

The offense was firing on all cylinders, with multiple players contributing to the scoring effort. Junior guard Tyson Walker led the way with 20 points, while senior forward Joey Hauser added 15 points of his own. The team moved the ball well and found open looks, shooting an impressive 50% from the field.

Defensively, Michigan State was equally impressive, holding Western Michigan to just 62 points. They forced turnovers, contested shots, and controlled the boards, limiting the Broncos’ second-chance opportunities.

This win improves Michigan State’s record to 2-0 on the season and sets a positive tone for the rest of the year. The team will look to build on this performance and continue their winning ways as they face tougher competition in the coming weeks.

Overall, it was a dominant showing from the Spartans, and fans have plenty to be excited about as the season progresses. Go Green!

Michigan State 80-62 Western Michigan (Dec 30, 2024) Game Recap

EAST LANSING, Mich. — — Jaden Akins scored 11 of his 18 points in the first half, helping No. 18 Michigan State build a double-digit lead to set up an 80-62 win over Western Michigan on Monday.

The Spartans (11-2) have won six in a row and nine of 10.

The Broncos (3-9) were competitive in stretches of the game before falling behind by double digits midway through the second half.

    Michigan State’s Carson Cooper scored a career-high 13 points.

Western Michigan’s Chansey Willis scored 12 points and Max Burton had 10.

The game marked the return of Dwayne Stephens, who was hired off Tom Izzo’s staff in 2022. Stephens was an assistant for the Hall of Fame coach for 19 seasons and played for the Spartans under the late Jud Heathcote.

    Takeaways

Western Michigan: In Stephens’ third season, the Broncos can build confidence after starting strong in each half. They led Michigan State 11-5 and scored the first 10 points after halftime.

Michigan State: Cooper and Szymon Zapala (eight points and nine rebounds) made up for Xavier Booker‘s lack of production. Booker scored just two points for the second straight game after scoring in double figures in four consecutive games, capping the run with a career-high 18 against Oakland.

    Key moment

Cooper’s alley-oop dunk midway through the second half put the Spartans ahead by eight and they pulled away for the 18-point win.

    Key stat

The Spartans had almost as many turnovers (11) as field goals in the first half and finished with 17 turnovers, stunting their ability to turn the game into a rout until the final minutes.

  • MSU basketball finally pulls away from Western Michigan: 3 quick takes

MSU basketball finally pulls away from Western Michigan: 3 quick takes

    1. That was MSU’s worst game in an otherwise impressive start

EAST LANSING – For the first time I can recall this season, Michigan State’s basketball team lacked a little sharpness, cohesiveness and zest all in the same game in Monday’s 80-62 win over Western Michigan, which felt nothing like the final score.

“I thought we played like we thought we were going to win the game,” Tom Izzo said afterward.

Even the crowd was a little off. The loudest Breslin Center ever got was when a fan made a full-court hockey shot as part of a promotion during a timeout. Usually holiday crowds are electric.

    1. Strong defense leads the way: The Spartans held the Broncos to just 57 points, showcasing their defensive prowess and ability to shut down opponents when it matters most.
    2. Balanced scoring attack: Five players scored in double figures for MSU, including standout performances from Aaron Henry and Gabe Brown. This balanced scoring distribution makes the team a tough matchup for any opponent.
    3. Closing out games: After struggling to close out games in the past, the Spartans showed their ability to pull away from Western Michigan in the second half and secure a comfortable victory. This newfound ability to finish strong bodes well for their upcoming matchups in conference play.

Michigan State will close out non-conference play against a familiar face.

After a nine-day break, the No. 18 Spartans (10-2, 2-0 Big Ten) host Western Michigan (3-8, 0-0 MAC) on Monday (3 p.m., BTN) at the Breslin Center. The Broncos are in their third season under coach Dwayne Stephens, who played for the Spartans and spent nearly two decades on Tom Izzo’s staff in East Lansing.

“I’ve got all the faith in him,” Izzo said of Stephens, who will face the Spartans for the first time as a head coach. “I hope he wins a lot of games, just not the one on Monday.”

Michigan State is riding a five-game winning streak and has been off since an 86-69 victory against Florida Atlantic on Dec. 21. The Spartans continue to feature a balanced lineup with guard Jaden Akins (13.3) the only one averaging double digits in scoring. Seven others are at 6.8 or better with 10 players logging at least 13 minutes per game.

Western Michigan has dropped four in a row, including a 76-73 heartbreaker at home to Valparaiso in its last outing on Dec. 20. The Broncos led by 22 points with less than seven minutes remaining in the second half before falling on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from halfcourt. Guard Chansey Willis leads the team in scoring (17.0) after missing the first eight games of the season while others have been sidelined as well.

“They’ve got a couple guys that can really fill it up,” Izzo said. “They’ve got size – they’ve got big size – and I’d say DJ knows their system pretty good. … He’s had a rash of injuries. That’s been the No. 1 thing that’s been a problem.”

Michigan State owns a 28-11 advantage in the all-time series against Western Michigan and has won eight straight dating back to 1982. The Spartans rolled to a 90-46 victory against the Broncos in their last meeting in November 2021.

Following Monday’s game, Michigan State will return to Big Ten play at Ohio State on Friday.
