  • Michigan catches fire from 3, smokes Western Kentucky to close nonconference

Michigan catches fire from 3, smokes Western Kentucky to close nonconference

ANN ARBOR — In a performance resembling a video game, Michigan caught fire from 3, tying a program record on Sunday night in a blowout win over visiting Western Kentucky.

Final: Michigan 112, Western Kentucky 64

    Record: 10-3 (2-0)

    MVP: Nimari Burnett

    Unsung hero: Vladislav Goldin

Arch nemesis: Michigan’s 17 turnovers? Not setting the program record for 3s?

Top highlight: Midway through the first half, Roddy Gayle Jr. hits Vladislav Goldin, cutting through the heart of Western Kentucky’s zone defense, for a long-range alley-oop.

Rhyme time: Post-holiday break but no rust to shake // A dub to close the year, as easy as cake

Michigan made 19 3-pointers against the Hilltoppers at Crisler Center (on 40 attempts), tying the high mark set in 2016. Michigan shot 52 percent from the field in the blowout. All nine Wolverines who saw significant time connected from deep in their last game of 2024. Michigan hadn’t scored that many points in a quarter-century.

There was no holiday hangover for the Wolverines, who wrapped the nonconference portion of their schedule without any bad losses. They protected home court and easily handled lesser foes. Next up: a resumption of Big Ten play, starting with a trip to Los Angeles to face USC on Saturday and UCLA three days later. The Wolverines will do so with two league wins from early December in their back pocket.

Sunday’s game was put to bed well before the final buzzer. Michigan led by 12 before the first media timeout and pulled away before the next one, eventually building a 28-point halftime edge.

Michigan stayed hot and never let Western Kentucky (9-4) even think about chipping away.

The Wolverines’ 17 turnovers was the only box-score blemish. When they got off a shot it usually went in — or was rebounded for another chance.

Burnett (17 points) made five 3s. Goldin matched him with 17 points, missing just once. Tre Donaldson (12 points, 11 rebounds) Danny Wolf (12 and 10) both notched double-doubles. The Hilltoppers’ zone defense was a disaster, and they shot just 37 percent at the other end, including just 2 of 12 from deep.

Michigan, which hadn’t played since a blowout win last Sunday, was locked in from the opening tip. Roddy Gayle Jr. (11 points) sent his defender tumbling to the floor with a jab step before burying a 3. Goldin tried a rare 3 and made it. Donaldson became the fourth Wolverine to hit a triple, giving Michigan a 16-4 lead with 16:17 left in the half.

Will Tschetter’s 3 with 12:24 left in the half pushed Michigan’s advantage to 10, and the rout was on.

Justin Pippen became the seventh Wolverine to connect from deep, then did it again on the next possession make it 45-25 with 6:08 left in the half. He saw serious run after a season-best 10 points last weekend.

Sam Walters’ corner 3 in the final seconds of the half sat on the rim for a moment and fell off, so Michigan made only 11 3s and shot 58 percent to lead 59-31 at halftime.

Michigan picked up where it left off coming out of halftime, with Burnett canning a 3 on the opening possession. Goldin hit his second 3 of the night to triple his career output as Michigan went up by 35 a little more than a minute into the second half. Wolf connected from deep and Walters (13 points) did the same, becoming the ninth Wolverine to do so.

Wolf’s high-arcing trey with 6:05 left gave him a double-double, put Michigan up by 50, and tied the program high for 3s.

The final score was identical to Michigan’s 112-64 win over Indiana on Feb. 22, 1998. Michigan hasn’t scored more than that since dropping 115 in a loss to Loyola Marymount in 1990.

In a scorching performance, Michigan catches fire from the 3-point line and smokes Western Kentucky to close out their nonconference schedule. The Wolverines put on a shooting clinic, draining shot after shot from beyond the arc to secure a dominant victory.

Led by sharpshooter Franz Wagner and dynamic guard DeVante’ Jones, Michigan lit up the scoreboard with their deadly outside shooting. The Wolverines’ offensive precision and relentless defensive pressure overwhelmed Western Kentucky, leaving no doubt about the outcome of the game.

With this impressive win, Michigan sends a clear message to the rest of the college basketball world that they are a force to be reckoned with. As they head into conference play, the Wolverines are firing on all cylinders and ready to take on all challengers. Watch out, Big Ten – Michigan is on fire.

Western Kentucky at Michigan Wolverines College Basketball Preview

The Michigan Wolverines needed to get back in the win column after two narrow neutral-site losses and did so in a big way against Purdue Fort Wayne. Though the Wolverines were big favorites, a 31-point win over a top-150 KenPom team is not insignificant, and now they get a chance to put on an encore performance against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers to close out the non-conference schedule.

Like the Mastodons, WKU is a quality mid-major team, sitting 110th in KenPom. Michigan will be expected to roll in Ann Arbor again, but this is a good chance to end 2024 on a positive and keep growing ahead of a two-game stint in Los Angeles to start the new year. The Wolverines have infamously stumbled for three years in a row immediately following Christmas, so a win Sunday would show this program is different.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (9-3) vs. Michigan Wolverines (9-3)

    Date & Time: Sunday, Dec. 29, 8 p.m. ET
Location: Crisler Center, Ann Arbor, MI
    TV/Streaming: BTN

The Hilltoppers started 0-2 but have since won nine of the last 10, with their lone loss coming at Kentucky. None of those nine wins are overly impressive, with no other games featuring Power Five competition. Still, this is solid team that is coming off a Conference USA tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance; Steve Lutz used that success to earn the Oklahoma State head coaching job, leaving assistant Hank Plona to take over.

The last meeting between these two teams was in the Fifth Place Game of the 2007 Great Alaska Shootout. That was a rough season for the Wolverines in John Beilein’s inaugural campaign, but it was one of WKU’s best ever with a magical run to the Sweet Sixteen. Obviously not a lot of relevance from a meeting 17 years ago, but hey, there is some history at least!

One Big Question: Has the mentality changed?

Last weekend’s win over PFW was everything Dusty May wanted to see: highly efficient offense (1.27 PPP), shutdown defense (0.83 PPP), and no relapse after getting out to a big lead. That last point is key after all of the slumps the Wolverines have endured during games this season and certainly was a possibility in a late-December buy game following some bitter defeats. The risk remains on Sunday in the dreaded contest between holidays.

WKU is not particularly strong offensively but does have one of the country’s fastest tempos. The Hilltoppers are prone to steals and do not do well in the paint (both making buckets and offensive rebounding), so as long as the defense can prevent easy looks in transition this should be another manageable opponent; any breakdowns will likely be effort and focus-based.

One Thing to Watch: Bring it

Nearly everything was working for Michigan last weekend, but I love how it was the fourth straight time with two-point shooting over 50 percent. Feasting in the paint is clearly the team’s strength, and I want to see the bigs challenge a Hilltoppers’ group that is top-50 nationally in interior defense. Much of this has to be competition driven, and it is difficult to see the visitors matching up to the Wolverines’ size, but May’s squad is still in habit-forming mode.

Big Ten play is notoriously physical, and Michigan’s identity will need to be centered around Danny Wolf and Vlad Goldin. The two have blossomed into a beautifully lethal combo, and these are the types of games they can really take over. The goal in this one is simply to wrap up the non-conference slate without a major blemish, but there is no reason why this cannot be an exclamation point as the calendar turns to 2025.

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers are set to face off against the Michigan Wolverines in an exciting college basketball matchup. Both teams are coming off of strong performances and will be looking to continue their winning streaks.

The Hilltoppers have been led by standout guard Charles Bassey, who is averaging a double-double this season with impressive numbers on both ends of the court. Western Kentucky will need Bassey to continue his dominant play if they hope to pull off an upset against the Wolverines.

On the other side, the Wolverines have been led by a balanced scoring attack, with multiple players averaging double figures in points. Michigan will look to continue their strong team play and solid defense to secure a victory at home.

This matchup promises to be an exciting one, with both teams bringing their A-game to the court. Fans can expect a fast-paced and competitive game as these two talented teams battle it out for the win. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as Western Kentucky takes on Michigan in what is sure to be a thrilling college basketball showdown.

Michigan basketball towers over Western Kentucky, 112-64

Vladislav Goldin and Nimari Burnett each scored 17 points to lead Michigan basketball to a 112-64 win over Western Kentucky in Ann Arbor on Sunday.

Sam Walters scored 13 points off the bench, Tre Donaldson had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Danny Wolf had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Roddy Gayle Jr. added 11 points for Michigan (10-3).

The Wolverines tied a program record with 19 made 3-pointers (in shooting 47.5% on 40 attempts) and held a 54-27 rebounding advantage.

Michigan Wolverines center Vladislav Goldin dunks in the first half against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024.

IT’S OFFICIAL:Michigan football signs transfer QB Mikey Keene: ‘Broke man’s Kyler Murray’

    First half brings season highs

Don McHenry scored 18 points, Julius Thedford had 11 points and Enoch Kalambay added 10 points in defeat for Western Kentucky (9-4), which shot just 5 of 25 from 3-point range.

Last night, the Michigan basketball team showed their dominance on the court as they towered over Western Kentucky in a stunning 112-64 victory. The Wolverines put on a show for their fans, showcasing their offensive firepower and defensive prowess throughout the game.

From the opening tip-off, Michigan established their control of the game, taking an early lead and never looking back. The team’s precision passing, sharp shooting, and tenacious defense overwhelmed Western Kentucky, leaving them struggling to keep up with the Wolverines’ fast-paced style of play.

The victory was a total team effort, with multiple players stepping up to contribute to the win. Hunter Dickinson led the way with a double-double, while Eli Brooks and Caleb Houstan also had standout performances on both ends of the court.

Michigan’s head coach, Juwan Howard, praised his team’s effort and execution after the game, noting that their focus and determination were key factors in their commanding victory. With this win, the Wolverines continue to prove why they are a force to be reckoned with in college basketball this season.

As the Michigan basketball team celebrates their impressive win over Western Kentucky, fans are eagerly anticipating what the rest of the season has in store for this talented and determined group of players.

  • Michigan basketball vs. Western Kentucky: Preview and updates

Michigan basketball vs. Western Kentucky: Preview and updates

Michigan basketball closes the 2024 calendar year by hosting Western Kentucky on Sunday night at the Crisler Center. Tip-off against the Hilltoppers is scheduled for 8 p.m., and the game will air on Big Ten Network.

The Wolverines are 9-3, and 2-0 in the Big Ten, and WKU represents the final non-conference game of the regular season. The Tops have an identical record and a top-125 ranking on KenPom, but their wins to date haven’t been spectacular; their victories feature opponents such as Kentucky Wesleyan and Campbellsville. Against the upper echelons of the sport, Western Kentucky has suffered narrow losses to Wichita State and Grand Canyon, and a 19-point road defeat to Kentucky.

WKU is led by guard Don McHenry, who has scored 28 or more points in three straight games. The Wisconsin native is a senior whose career has featured stops at Hawaii Hilo and Indian Hill Community College before transferring to the Tops ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. That up transfer was an immediate hit, as McHenry was the team’s leading scorer (15.1 points per game) last year and finished as the fourth-leading scorer in CUSA while charting the third-best field goal percentage in the conference. Appropriately, he does command high usage (28.5%, per KenPom) and is very efficient at the free throw line (84.8%).

McHenry paces an offense that plays fast (11th in adjusted tempo, per KenPom) and rarely turns the ball over. But, like many of Michigan’s opponents in non-conference, WKU is among the shorter teams in the nation, with a starting five featuring a 6-foot-8 center and a 6-foot-7 power forward. As a result, WKU doesn’t hit the offensive glass and was thoroughly out rebounded by Kentucky in that matchup.

Michigan will hope to avoid a late-December letdown that has recurred in recent years: A 2023 loss to McNeese St., a 2022 loss to Central Michigan and 2021 loss to Central Florida were harbingers of disappointing seasons.

KenPom predicts a 16-point win for the Wolverines and gives them a 92% chance of taking care of business against Western Kentucky on Sunday night at Crisler.

Michigan vs. Western Kentucky: Game notes

    Via the two programs:

    – The Tops’ current six-game winning streak dates back over a month, with the team’s only other loss coming at the hands of No. 8 Kentucky on the road in Lexington on Nov. 26.

    – WKU touts the top-scoring offense in CUSA with an average of 82.0 points per game, good for 54th in the nation. The Tops rank sixth in the nation for defensive rebounding with 30.17 per game. They’re also 37th in the nation in FG% defense, limiting opponents to 39.1% shooting from the field.

    – U-M’s battle with Western Kentucky is the finale of a quintuple of Sunday games on the Big Ten Network. After five men’s games, the Sunday slate of games will end with a Maize & Blue doubleheader as Kim Barnes Arico’s 23rd-ranked Wolverines take on fourth-ranked USC and JuJu Watkins at 7 p.m. PST (10 p.m. EST) from the Galen Center.

    – Michigan and Western Kentucky are playing for the first time in 17 years. U-M is 3-2 all-time, but the Wolverines have lost the last two.

Michigan basketball is set to face off against Western Kentucky in a non-conference matchup on Thursday night. The Wolverines are coming off a dominant win over Prairie View A&M, while the Hilltoppers are looking to bounce back from a tough loss to Louisville.

Michigan will be looking to continue their strong start to the season, led by standout freshman forward Caleb Houstan and veteran guard DeVante’ Jones. The Wolverines’ defense has been a key factor in their early success, holding opponents to just 61.2 points per game.

Western Kentucky, on the other hand, will be looking to regroup after a tough loss to Louisville. The Hilltoppers are led by senior guard Taveion Hollingsworth, who is averaging 18.3 points per game. They will need a strong performance from their supporting cast to pull off an upset against Michigan.

This matchup promises to be an exciting one, with both teams looking to make a statement early in the season. Stay tuned for updates and analysis on Thursday night’s game between Michigan and Western Kentucky.
