  • New Season of ‘The White Lotus’ Brings a Tourism Boom in Thailand

New Season of ‘The White Lotus’ Brings a Tourism Boom in Thailand

When the third season of the hit HBO series “The White Lotus” debuts on Sunday, viewers will be transported to the tropical island of Koh Samui, Thailand. And if previous seasons are any indication, many of them will soon be booking vacations there, too.

The show, which takes place at a different fictional White Lotus luxury resort each season, centers on a group of wealthy tourists, their interpersonal dramas and the inevitable tension with staff and locals, all against a backdrop of paradise skewed.

With a wave of tourists set to wash ashore, the roughly 68,000 residents of Koh Samui are about to get a lot more familiar with the “White Lotus” effect.

On the pristine white sand of Chaweng Beach one recent evening, Tey, 46, a local carpenter who declined to give his last name, said he didn’t really know much about the series. But then came a flash of recognition.

“Yes, yes. Lisa’s show was filmed here,” he said. Lisa, or Lalisa Manobal, is a Thai member of the K-pop band Blackpink who makes her acting debut in this season of “The White Lotus.”

Had he heard anything else about it? Tey shook his head.

Bookings at the $2,000-a-night Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, where a large part of Season 3 was shot, have already jumped 40 percent. And once the new season begins streaming, Marc Speichert, the executive vice president and chief commercial officer of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, said he expected demand to increase “exponentially.”

“We saw a 10x increase in the properties in Maui and Taormina,” Mr. Speichert said, referring to the Four Seasons resorts in Hawaii and Sicily where much of Seasons 1 and 2 were shot. The high-end travel network Virtuoso said its data showed a 424 percent spike in sales to Sicily after Season 2.

For visitors to Koh Samui who want a taste of the sweet “White Lotus” life but don’t have the bank balances to match, the Four Seasons offers day passes allowing use of the beach and access to restaurants and bars if you spend at least 5,000 baht, or about $150, said Jasjit Assi, the resort’s general manager.

Other businesses, local as well as global, are also banking on a boom. American Express is offering a White Lotus Thailand Experience package to certain card members. It includes three days at the Four Seasons resort and a full-moon party.

Even about 200 miles west on the popular island of Phuket, where some parts of the Season 3 were shot, hotels are trying to cash in on “The White Lotus.” The Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas, for example, boasts that it offers a level of luxury similar to that of the Four Seasons, and unlike Koh Samui, Phuket is home to a Michelin-starred restaurant, Pru.

Phuket, Bangkok and Koh Samui are all stops on the seven-night White Lotus Thailand trip offered by Unforgettable Travel Company, a luxury tour operator, for just under $8,000 per person. It includes private tours of Bangkok and sunset cruises in Bangkok and Koh Samui.

“I think it is going to be huge for Samui,” said Michael Brasier, the owner-manager of Nahm, a casual, airy fusion restaurant perched over the water near Koh Samui’s airport. Mr. Brasier already benefited from a “White Lotus” boon of his own: A group of actors including Walton Goggins, who plays one of the resort guests, visited Nahm several times a week while filming, he said, and he had the photos to prove it.

But the trend has taken off in recent years, with events like “Bridgerton”-style balls and “Emily in Paris”-inspired girls’ trips to the French Riviera. In 2023, the high-end travel provider Black Tomato began offering experiences like James Bond-themed private tours, including a speedboat race on the River Thames, for $18,500 and up.

But in the past, set-jetters mostly visited places they had already seen in their favorite movies or shows. With Season 3 of “The White Lotus,” they’re not waiting.

The British actor Jason Isaacs, one of the stars of the new season, said he was surprised to hear that set-jetters were already traveling to Koh Samui.

“I didn’t realize that was a thing already,” he said.

Mr. Isaacs, who spoke by phone as he was en route to the season premiere in Los Angeles, said he managed to do a little exploration of his own during the more than two months he was on Koh Samui for filming. He cited temple visits, waterfall hikes, massages and training in Thai boxing as some of the highlights. “Samui is a gorgeous, layered, complex place, full of incredible beauty,” he said.

But he cautioned that the expected influx of visitors and the accompanying development will have downsides, too, echoing the haves-and-have-nots theme woven into the show. Despite the beautiful setting, there is “poverty and deprivation,” he said. “Visitors will see a lot if they are curious and keep their eyes open.”

Tey, the carpenter from Chaweng Beach, knows all too well what change has brought to the island. He remembers when he was a child, the sight of a foreigner was a big event. Back then the hills weren’t covered with expat-owned villas and the roads weren’t lined with shops selling marijuana, which was decriminalized in Thailand in 2022.

But at the same time, Tey, who learned English working for a British developer building those same villas, was pragmatic about the changes.

Those tourists and expats bring money to the island, he said, expressing a sentiment that wouldn’t be out of place in a “White Lotus” episode: “They can do what they want.”

Feb. 3 (UPI) — More than seven months after the Florida Panthers won their first Stanley Cup, the team will visit the White House on Monday to commemorate the win.

It will be the first visit by a sports team with President Donald Trump during his second term as president.

Team members flew from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Dulles International Airport earlier Monday.

On Sunday, the Panthers defeated the New York Islanders 6-3 at their home at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Fla. They remain atop the Atlantic Division at 32-19-3 in their third consecutive win.

On Tuesday, the Florida team will face the host Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena, where Trump celebrated after his inauguration two weeks ago.

Boston Celtics were the last team to be honored at the White House in November after winning the NBA title on June 18 against the Dallas Mavericks. They met with President Joe Biden.

Six days after the NBA final, the Panthers defeated the defending champion Edmonton Oilers in Sunrise. The Panthers lost the 2023 championship in the finals.

Other South Florida professional titles were the NFL Miami Dolphins in 1972 and 1973, the baseball Miami Marlins in 1997 and 2003, and the NBA Miami Heat in 2006, 2012 and 2013.

During Trump’s first term, 20 major sports teams won championships but only 10 celebrated at the White House.

Trump did not invite some of the winning teams and others expressed no desire to attend even if they had received an invitation.

In 2017, Trump served fast food when he welcomed the Clemson Tigers after winning their 2016 college football title.

President Donald Trump announced today that he will be welcoming the Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, to the White House for a special ceremony in their honor. The Panthers recently clinched their first ever Stanley Cup victory, and Trump is eager to celebrate their historic achievement.

The ceremony will take place next week, and Trump is expected to praise the team for their hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship throughout the season. He will also present the players and coaching staff with a special commemorative gift to mark the occasion.

The Florida Panthers have had an incredible season, and their Stanley Cup win has brought great pride and excitement to their fans across the country. This visit to the White House will be a memorable and prestigious moment for the team, and a chance for them to bask in the glory of their well-deserved victory.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting event as details are finalized. Congratulations to the Florida Panthers on their remarkable achievement! #FloridaPanthers #StanleyCupChampions #WhiteHouseCelebration

  • Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers Visit White House Today

SUNRISE — The Florida Panthers enjoyed themselves on Sunday with a comeback win against the Islanders on the night they celebrated Dmitry Kulikov’s 1,000th NHL game before flying to Washington for a Monday visit to the White House.

The defending Stanley Cup champions normally would have flown to Washington on Monday afternoon.

Due to their special stop at the White House with the Stanley Cup, the Panthers flew out late Sunday night.

They had some business to take care of first.

After beating the Islanders 6-3, the team gathered inside the Amerant Bank Arena to toast Kulikov after he played in his milestone game Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings.

Kulikov was honored by the Panthers before Sunday’s win against the Islanders with the team holding a special on-ice ceremony after wearing his No. 7 jerseys in their warmup.

“I love it for the kids,’’ said Paul Maurice, referring to Kulikov’s two children being gifted mini versions of the traditional silver stick that he got from Bill Zito.

“The families don’t get to really be a part of a lot of things and then they get down on the ice for a pretty special night there last year. It’s a wonderful thing for the kids to be able to stand there and have their father recognized for such an accomplishment. I’m happy for him and his family.”

After hanging out with Kulikov, his family, and other invited guests, the team headed to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The Panthers took a later-than-usual flight to Dulles for today’s afternoon session at the White House.

The Florida Panthers will be the first 2023-24 championship team to be celebrated at the White House under the new administration.

The Boston Celtics were honored for their 2024 NBA title at the White House in November.

Before leaving, the Panthers had a bit of a fight on their hands.

The Islanders had won seven straight, including 3-2 in overtime the night before in Tampa.

Despite having two of their top players out due to injuries sustained against the Lightning — and, starting a goalie making his NHL debut — the Islanders gave Florida all it could handle.

Carter Verhaeghe scored the first two of his three goals in the opening period against Jakub Skarek, only New York stormed back in the second with three straight goals.

Evan Rodrigues tied the score at 3 at 17:52 of the second by snaring a rebound of Anton Lundell’s shot and slid a backhand past the sprawling stick of Skarek.

Sam Reinhart made it 4-3 with 51 seconds left in the period, finishing off a rush he started by tapping in a pass from Gus Forsling.

    The Panthers never trailed again.

“After the first period, we had to come back,” said Islanders coach Patrick Roy, the Hall of Famer who swept the Panthers in the 1996 Stanley Cup Final with Colorado.

“And it’s too bad. We took a 3-2 lead and there is a reason why they won the Stanley Cup, isn’t there? They are a good team, a team plays the right way and are very disciplined in their structure. We learned a lot tonight.”

Verhaeghe made it 5-3 to get his fourth career hat trick, and Matthew Tkachuk polished the game portion of the night with an empty-net goal.

“It was nice,’’ Verhaeghe said. “I’ve been shooting a lot lately and to get a couple, it feels pretty good. Our team is playing really well. I’m getting some chemistry with Barkov and Reinhart out there and it’s really nice that they’re finding me in great areas.”

The Panthers have won three straight going to Washington, and hold a three-point lead in the Atlantic Division on the Maple Leafs.

The Panthers visit the Capitals on Tuesday night.

“I think the games where we come to play right from the start is where we are at our best,” Verhaeghe said.

“It is kind of a mindset thing we like to have, and we had it tonight.’’

  • Trump hosts Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers at White House

    CBS News Miami

    Live

MIAMI – President Donald Trump will welcome the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers to the White House on Monday afternoon to celebrate their historic victory.

The Panthers are the first professional sports team to visit Trump at the White House since he regained office.

Florida captured its first-ever Stanley Cup in June, defeating the Edmonton Oilers in seven games in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.

The Panthers secured their championship in front of more than 19,000 fans at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, with a 2-1 victory in Game 7.

Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe scored for Florida, while goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves to seal the win.

The hard-fought series saw Florida take a commanding 3-0 lead before dropping the next three games, narrowly avoiding becoming the second team in NHL history to lose the Stanley Cup Final after leading 3-0. The 1942 Detroit Red Wings remain the only team to suffer that fate.

The victory also denied Edmonton its first championship since 2006 and prevented Oilers captain Connor McDavid from securing his first Stanley Cup.

Across South Florida, fans packed watch parties, erupting in cheers as the Panthers clinched their long-awaited title.

Today, President Donald Trump welcomed the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers to the White House for a special ceremony honoring their incredible victory. The team, led by captain Aleksander Barkov, was honored for their hard work, dedication, and talent that led them to their first ever championship win.

During the ceremony, President Trump praised the Panthers for their outstanding performance throughout the season and their resilience in the playoffs. He commended their teamwork and sportsmanship, highlighting their ability to come together and achieve greatness on the ice.

The Panthers players and coaching staff were thrilled to be recognized at the White House, and expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate their victory with the President. They presented President Trump with a personalized team jersey and thanked him for his support of the team and the sport of hockey.

Overall, the event was a memorable and exciting moment for the Florida Panthers, as they were able to bask in the glory of their championship win and share their success with the highest office in the land. Congratulations to the Florida Panthers on their historic Stanley Cup victory!

  • What Netanyahu and Trump will discuss in White House meeting : NPR

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu makes statements at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Sunday, ahead of his visit to Washington, D.C., where he will meet with President Trump this week.

TEL AVIV, Israel — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s White House visit Tuesday will be rife with symbolism: He’s the first world leader to meet President Trump since the inauguration two weeks ago.

It will also be a crucial day for the future of the Middle East — and Netanyahu himself.

Negotiations have begun for a second phase of a ceasefire deal that would end the war with Hamas and return all Israeli hostages from captivity in Gaza. Also on the table is a bargain that could reshape the Middle East for decades to come: a deal to open Israel’s diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia.

Another central question to resolve: whether Israel will launch a military strike on a weakened Iran, shorn after a year of intense fighting against its proxies.

Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, played a key role in persuading Netanyahu to accept the ceasefire’s first phase, and Trump wants to see the deal continue until all hostages are freed and the war is over, in order to focus on a Saudi-Israeli peace deal.

The Israeli leader’s allies, however, have threatened to bring down the government if Israel goes down that path — and does not resume the war in Gaza and eliminate Hamas rule there.

“The Tuesday meeting is actually critical to Netanyahu’s ability to survive as the leader of Israel and to make sure that his coalition stays intact,” says Gayil Talshir, professor of politics at Hebrew University. “I think Netanyahu wants exactly what Trump offers him, but I think his own coalition has quite a different vision.”

    Netanyahu’s political future and legacy

The main challenge Netanyahu faces is from Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s finance minister, who wants the war to continue till Hamas is destroyed — a task Israeli defense analysts believe is unrealistic, so long as Hamas continues to hold Israeli hostages and Israel does not endorse a viable alternative leadership for Gaza.

Despite Israel pounding Gaza for over a year, the recent hostage releases have seen dozens of masked Hamas fighters parade Israelis on makeshift stages before freeing them.

Talshir, who’s writing a forthcoming book about the Netanyahu era of Israel, believes that given Netanyahu’s interest in retaining his coalition and staying in office, the prime minister might have an interest in returning to war.

“As long as he continues the war, Israel does not go to election,” Talshir says. “Israel does not have a public investigation of what happened on Oct. 7. And Netanyahu remains in power.”

Netanyahu faces another Gordian knot: He and Trump have their sights set on establishing Saudi-Israeli relations, but Riyadh in return demands a pathway to a Palestinian state. That’s a prospect Netanyahu’s allies and most of the Israeli parliament oppose even more fervently after the deadly Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, that sparked the Gaza war. They see a Palestinian state as a security threat to Israel and an undeserved reward to Palestinians after the attack.

Victoria Coates, an analyst at The Heritage Foundation in Washington D.C., and a deputy national security adviser to Trump during his first term, said the U.S. president will find it difficult to satisfy that Saudi demand.

“As much as we might want a deal with Saudi Arabia, you know, Israel is going to, particularly after Oct. 7, remain very, very mindful of its internal security. It has to,” says Coates. “So, you know, the deal that looked like it was pretty imminent in the 2020-21 time frame may take a little bit longer now.”

Trump has also floated the prospect of relocating Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring Egypt and Jordan. Arab countries including Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia have firmly rejected the idea, as have Palestinians.

Many Israelis want the hostages to return

On Saturday, family and friends cheered as American Israeli hostage Keith Siegel was freed by Hamas. But many at the gathering at Siegel’s extended relatives’ home in a kibbutz in central Israel expressed nervousness about the war resuming before all the hostages were freed. Rabbi Steve Burnstein believes U.S. pressure can make a difference.

“We just hope and pray that the Americans do everything that they can to ensure that the Israeli government has the strength and the courage to make sure that we reach the second stage of the deal,” he said to NPR.

That same evening, a few thousand Tel Aviv residents showed up at one of the weekly rallies celebrating the return of three Israeli hostages and demanding the government work toward returning all the remaining hostages still held by Hamas, many of whom are believed dead.

At the rally, Shelly, who only gave her first name to speak frankly about U.S.-Israeli politics without repercussion, said she believes only “Trump can push Netanyahu to seal another deal.”

“I feel like Netanyahu didn’t want a deal before. And he’s doing it because Trump said so,” she said. “And I hope Trump’s gonna tell him, we’re bringing everyone. Every single hostage home.”

In an upcoming meeting at the White House, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Donald Trump are expected to discuss a range of important topics. Some of the key issues likely to be on the agenda include:

    1. Middle East peace process: Netanyahu and Trump are likely to discuss the ongoing efforts to broker a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians. The Trump administration has put forward a peace plan known as the “Deal of the Century,” and the two leaders will likely discuss how to move the process forward.

    2. Iran: Both Netanyahu and Trump have been vocal critics of the Iranian regime, and they are likely to discuss ways to counter Iran’s influence in the region. This could include discussions on sanctions, military cooperation, and other measures to contain Iran’s activities.

    3. US-Israel relations: The meeting will also be an opportunity for the two leaders to reaffirm the strong bond between the United States and Israel. They may discuss ways to deepen cooperation on a range of issues, including security, trade, and technology.

    4. Regional security: Netanyahu and Trump are likely to discuss the security situation in the Middle East, including the ongoing conflicts in Syria and Yemen. They may also discuss ways to counter terrorist threats in the region.

Overall, the meeting between Netanyahu and Trump is expected to be a crucial opportunity for the two leaders to coordinate on key issues affecting the Middle East and to strengthen the US-Israel relationship.

  • Dana White reacts to Shara Magomedov’s first loss at UFC Saudi Arabia

Shara Magomedov lost his undefeated record Saturday at UFC Fight Night 250.

The middleweight sensation came up short in a unanimous decision against Michael Page in the co-main event of the Saudi Arabia card. Although many expected him to win, given he was the favorite and younger fighter, UFC CEO Dana White said he thought Magomedov (15-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) had a tough fight ahead.

“You have to be aggressive with Page, but it’s a weird situation to be in because he’s a counter-striker and he sort of sits back and waits for you,” White said. “You’re dammed if you do, damned if you don’t.”

When asked if Magomedov lost his buzz by losing his undefeated record against Page (23-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC), White was supportive. He sees MVP as a tough fight for anyone in the sport and said he thinks Magomedov’s stock remains strong.

“I think styles make fights, and MVP is a very tough style to fight,” White said. “He lays back and counter punches. If you go in guns a’blazing, he’s a real good counter puncher. And if you have a hard time getting off, there’s a lot of standing around and staring at each other.

“(Page is) just a hard style to fight. I don’t think this diminishes (Magomedov) in any way, and I don’t think it had anything to do with him freezing. Let’s not forget: The guy has one eye. That doesn’t help.”

Dana White Reacts to Shara Magomedov’s First Loss at UFC Saudi Arabia

UFC President Dana White is known for his candid reactions to fighters’ performances, and Shara Magomedov’s first loss at UFC Saudi Arabia was no exception. Magomedov, who had been undefeated in his MMA career until that point, suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of his opponent in a highly anticipated bout.

White, known for his no-nonsense approach, didn’t mince words when asked about Magomedov’s loss. “It’s always tough to see a fighter experience their first defeat, especially when they’ve been on such a dominant streak,” White said. “But that’s the nature of the sport – anything can happen on any given night. It’s how a fighter bounces back from a loss that truly defines their character.”

White praised Magomedov for his resilience and sportsmanship in the face of defeat, noting that the fighter had taken the loss in stride and vowed to come back stronger in his next fight. “Shara is a talented athlete with a bright future ahead of him,” White said. “I have no doubt that he will learn from this experience and use it to fuel his fire for future successes in the octagon.”

As for Magomedov’s future in the UFC, White remained optimistic about his prospects. “Shara is a young fighter with a lot of potential,” White said. “I have no doubt that he will bounce back from this setback and continue to make waves in the UFC. It’s all part of the journey for any fighter, and I have no doubt that Shara will rise to the occasion.”

Overall, White’s reaction to Magomedov’s first loss at UFC Saudi Arabia was one of encouragement and support, highlighting the resilience and determination that are essential qualities for success in the world of mixed martial arts. Fans can expect to see Magomedov back in the octagon before long, ready to prove himself once again on the biggest stage in the sport.

  • Chicago Cubs Create More Infield Depth, Sign Former White Sox Infielder

Jed Hoyer continues to wheel and deal for the Chicago Cubs this winter.

Connected to multiple high-profile players at this point in time, the front office is weighing the decision between going “all in” this season in a loaded National League and continuing to plan for the future.

They made a move on Sunday, but it wasn’t for one of the stars.

Per Jon Heyman of The New York Post, Nick Lopez is joining the Cubs. Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports it’s on a minor league deal.

This adds another infielder to the equation as Chicago gets ready for their early Spring Training period based on them beginning the upcoming campaign in Japan against the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 18-19.

Nico Hoerner’s status for Opening Day is up in the air after undergoing offseason surgery, and while Dansby Swanson says he’ll be ready for Game 1 coming off his own injury, having insurance is never a bad thing, especially when there are already questions at third base.

Lopez isn’t an offensive wizard by any means.

Across his six Major League seasons, he’s produced a slash line of .248/.312/.314 with an OPS+ that’s 26 points below the league average.

However, with the Chicago White Sox last year, he produced his best season since his breakout in 2021 as a member of the Kansas City Royals.

Lopez slashed .241/.312/.294 with an OPS+ of 76 across his 124 games and 455 plate appearances. Nothing to write home about, but he was worth five Outs Above Average at second base and shortstop, which is certainly valuable off the bench.

The Chicago Cubs have added more depth to their infield by signing former White Sox infielder, Yolmer Sanchez. Sanchez, who spent the last six seasons with the White Sox, brings versatility and experience to the Cubs’ roster.

Sanchez is known for his strong defense and ability to play multiple infield positions, including second base, third base, and shortstop. He is also a switch-hitter, which adds another dimension to the Cubs’ lineup.

With injuries and inconsistencies plaguing the Cubs’ infield in recent years, Sanchez provides a reliable option off the bench and could even compete for a starting role. His energetic playing style and leadership qualities will also be valuable in the clubhouse.

Overall, the addition of Yolmer Sanchez gives the Cubs more depth and flexibility in their infield, which could prove to be crucial as they aim to compete for a playoff spot in the upcoming season. Cubs fans should be excited to see what Sanchez brings to the team in 2022.
