Warning: This article contains spoilers for Wicked, the 2024 movie and the Broadway show.Wicked has become a bigger hit than anyone expected, raising expectations sky-high for the back half expected in November of 2025. Yet as the story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera) progresses and the stakes are raised, fans new and old can expect some key differences between the first and second movies. Wicked: Part Two will continue the prequel tale of the (in)famous witches of Oz, who are well on their way to being known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good by Wicked‘s ending.
While the first act of the Broadway musical Wicked follows Elphaba and Glinda’s school days and their enemies-to-friends arc, the second act shows them grappling with the harsh realities of Oz after leaving school (Elphaba having flown away in a blaze of glory and Glinda presumably actually graduating). The two-part movie adaptation is following the same framework, meaning there will be some fundamental differences between the two installments. However, even if the music, story structure, and characterizations shift, audiences can expect the same breathtaking spectacle as was delivered in 2024.

Elphaba & Glinda Will Be Split Up In Wicked 2
Elphaba & Glinda Aren’t Conveniently In The Same Place Anymore
The first half of Wicked does the bulk of the work of establishing Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship, a task made much easier by the fact that they are within proximity of each other for most of the runtime, attending Shiz University and being forced to room together. This allows for some more inconsequential shenanigans and humorous beats stemming from their contrasting personalities, as well as sweet affirmations of their friendship. However, this is all the groundwork for their relationship to still matter deeply throughout Wicked 2 when physical distance separates them.
Elphaba and Glinda, the two main characters from the Broadway musical, are played by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the Wicked movie.
As Elphaba is on the run, she does not risk casually meeting with her family or friends. She and Glinda have only a handful of scenes together, which are emotionally charged moments defined by conflict or reconciliation between the two. Their friendship gradually developing through lazy nights in their dorm room isn’t in the cards because of their locations. Wicked possibly teases an Elphaba and Glinda flashback in the next movie, which would add to their screen time together, but they are still rarely in the same place in the main timeline.

Shiz Won’t Be The Primary Setting In Wicked 2
The Days At “Dear Old Shiz” Are In The Past, Changing The Nature Of The Story
The majority of Wicked (part one) also takes place at Shiz University, facilitating Elphaba and Glinda’s burgeoning friendship through a natural story setup that has them in the same place. Wicked initially launches itself into a familiar boarding school story (with the age of the characters being older than in most similar narratives), with some nostalgic tropes of a magical curriculum, a bully turned friend, a night out dancing, etc. However, school cannot last forever, and the characters grow up and are forced to test what they have learned in the outside world.
Assuming that Wicked: Part Two picks up where the second act of the show does, the story starts after a time jump. Elphaba effectively dropped out of Shiz, but the others presumably finished their education. Glinda is now a spokesperson, Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) is the Captain of the Guard, and Nessarose (Marissa Bode) is the governor of Munchkinland. The setting is less one defined place for it all to play out, as Elphaba especially is constantly moving around. The overall tone shifts with less comfort and stability as was found at Shiz, even if there were hints of something sinister there.

Wicked 2 Will Have Original Songs
The Legendary Wicked Composer Is Returning Yet Again With New Tunes
A highly anticipated element of Wicked: Part Two is the confirmed two original songs to be added to the soundtrack. It was announced ahead of Wicked‘s release that it would include some new tracks, as the overall runtime is greater and more music is needed to keep up the pacing. With the first half of Wicked simply having more and longer musical numbers already, it was natural that the second installment would end up with more original musical material. The movie’s “One Short Day” already includes a new song embedded within it, performed by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth in their magical Wicked cameo.
Now the focus is on the next two songs that Stephen Schwartz, the composer behind the Broadway production of Wicked, will write for the subsequent movie. Additionally, Cynthia Erivo has teased the Wicked song she co-wrote for the next movie, which appears to be another solo ballad performed by Elphaba. Schwartz has a monumental task ahead of him in delivering songs that live up to the tunes that have been iconic for more than 20 years, made only more so by their execution in the highly acclaimed movie. Yet the prospect of Erivo performing another showstopper is very promising.

Nessarose & Boq Will Both (To An Extent) Be Villains In Wicked 2
Nessa Becomes The Wicked Witch Of The East, & Boq Another Enemy To Elphaba
The fraudulent Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) and his sorceress ally Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) remain the primary villains in the second half of Wicked. However, the supporting characters of Nessarose and Boq (Ethan Slater) also become somewhat antagonistic, making selfishly dangerous decisions — on both their parts, because of a desire for love. Glinda suggests that the Munchkin boy who admires her ask out Elphaba’s younger sister to get him off her back, which leads to Boq and Nessa being in a perfunctory relationship wherein Boq does not return Nessa’s feelings.
Wicked’s characters are in a chain of unrequited love — Nessa to Boq, Boq to Glinda, Glinda to Fiyero — which complicates the main love triangle.
Both character arcs are delicate matters, as they need to portray unrequited love as a corrupting force that leads to greater consequences. Nessa is technically the legitimate leader of Munchkinland but becomes a tyrannical ruler in an effort to keep Boq near her, coming to be known as the more quietly evil Wicked Witch of the East. In the show, she doesn’t hesitate to blame Elphaba for Boq’s transformation into the Tin Man; Boq then leads a mob of witch hunters against Elphaba. Both characters are lessons in denial and make the story more dynamic with more enemies at large.
4
Fiyero Will Have A More Active Role In Wicked 2
Fiyero Doesn’t Sit Idly By When Elphaba Is In Trouble
Fiyero is largely pulled through the plot by Elphaba and Ginda in the first half of Wicked. He ropes the entire school into a somewhat illegal night out when he first arrives at Shiz and performs “Dancing Through Life.” His arc then sees him falling into a relationship with Glinda without much thought, and helping Elphaba rescue the lion cub when she (possibly unintentionally) leaves only him awake when casting a sleeping spell on the rest of the class. However, Wicked‘s ending shows Fiyero leaving Shiz in a rush after Elphaba is declared a danger to the public.
This sets up his role in the rest of the story: Fiyero becomes the Wizard’s Captain of the Guard, a position he mainly uses to search for Elphaba, trying to reach her before someone who would harm her does. He stays with Glinda all this time, but pretty much the moment he reunites with Elphaba, he confesses that she is the one he truly loves and leaves with her. The show also includes a dramatic confrontation where Fiyero threatens Glinda to force the other guards to let Elphaba go, which will likely transfer over.

There Won’t Be As Many Big Musical Numbers In Wicked 2
The Rest Of Wicked’s Soundtrack Limits Opportunities For The Wicked Movie Production To Show Off Its Strengths
In addition to there just being more songs in the first half of Wicked, there are a greater number of bombastic ensemble numbers. Now that director Jon M. Chu and his production team have proven that they are masters in staging and shooting such sequences, the fact that there aren’t as many of them in the future is a disappointment. There is the possibility that one of the new songs could be another ensemble number, or that the movie will extend some of the shorter songs performed by the entire cast from the musical.

As performed on stage, the biggest musical number in Wicked‘s second act is the first one, “Thank Goodness,” where Glinda tries to reassure the Ozian public while the Wicked Witch is still free. “Finale” is a very brief reprise of “No One Mourns the Wicked,” while “March of the Witch Hunters” claims some dark theatrics, but is also on the short and simple side. There are some opportunities to flesh out these songs, but people can generally expect that they won’t be the same as the back-to-back bangers of “What Is This Feeling?,” “Dancing Through Life,” and “One Short Day.”

Wicked 2 Will Overlap More With The Wizard Of Oz
Wicked’s Timeline Eventually Reaches The Original Storyline
Wicked begins in what can be called sequel territory for The Wizard of Oz, with Glinda greeting the Munchkinlanders after the Wicked Witch’s reported death, a scene during which she mentions that the Wizard has already left Oz (to take Dorothy home but accidentally leaving her behind, according to the 1939 movie). Wicked then segues into its main setting, long before Dorothy’s arrival when Elphaba and Glinda meet at school. Most of Wicked‘s narrative is definitively a prequel, delving into the characterizations and backstories of people who will someday fill out Dorothy’s adventure.
Wicked includes many characters from the original Wizard of Oz story, but their arcs are reframed to reveal more about the complex politics of Oz.
However, Wicked does eventually catch up to The Wizard of Oz; going off the show, this is about midway through the second half, when a plot to endanger Nessarose to draw Elphaba out of hiding leads to Dorothy being brought to Oz and the death of the Wicked Witch of the East. Much of Elphaba’s actions are then concerned with getting back her sister’s shoes, which Dorothy has come into possession of. It begins to feel much more like a reimagining of The Wizard of Oz than a prequel, as the plot of the former is implied to be taking place off-screen.

Wicked 2 Will Feature Dorothy
Dorothy Has Already Been Prominently Featured In Wicked’s Marketing
Finally, the long-awaited and mysterious role of Dorothy in the Wicked movie adaptation will come to fruition in the next installment. Dorothy was teased in the Wicked trailers, although her face was never shown, and it is still unknown who is playing her in the movie. While Elphaba has face-to-face interactions with Dorothy in this narrative, Dorothy is never seen on stage in the Broadway production; she is only heard crying off-stage and is seen as a silhouette when she melts Elphaba.
Dorothy is seemingly set up to have a larger role in the movie, potentially taking inspiration from her single conversation with Elphaba in the original novel, despite the many major changes Wicked makes to the book. While fans of the show may be apprehensive of this change, there is some great potential for the movie to deal with themes of innocence in contrast with experience through Dorothy’s presence. Much about the sequel to Wicked is still shrouded in mystery, which will hopefully make the original and familiar elements all the more enjoyable when the movie finally arrives in theaters.

Ariana Grande reveals intense preparation for Glinda role in ‘Wicked’
Ariana Grande collected Glinda-themed wardrobe pieces way before she had the role in Wicked.
Ariana shared with People that she “had a little portion of my closet that was all just little pink tops and stuff, just in case” she got her dream role as Glinda.
“I was like, ‘What underwear would Glinda wear today?’ ” the Side to Side hitmaker quipped.
Getting candid about her hard work to get the role, she said: “I had been chasing [producer] Marc Platt down for about 10 years, wondering when this movie was going to happen, when I would have the opportunity to audition.”
“As soon as I heard that maybe in a few months they might start seeing people, I was like, ‘Great! Now’s the time I’m starting,’ ” she confessed.
She also shared that during her first audition, she sang both Glinda and Elphaba’s songs, including Popular, No One Mourns the Wicked, Defying Gravity and The Wizard and I.
She shared: “Weirdly, strangely, I sang for both [Glinda and Elphaba]. I don’t know why — I think we all kind of knew why I was going in, and it was for Glinda. I love Elphaba, but you know.”
Director Jon M. Chu also joined in on the talk and admitted that he had his doubts about casting Ariana since the singer had long been saying in interviews that she wanted to play Glinda and it could’ve overtaken the whole movie.
He said: “In my head, I was like, ‘We’re never giving this to Ariana Grande. That’ll take over the movie — [it’ll be] about Ariana Grande.’ “
“Every time she came in, she was an Ari that I’d never seen before. And every time she left, she was the most interesting person,” he added.

It seems the Wicked movie is very, very popular. The first half of Universal’s two-part adaptation of the international hit musical Wicked, which officially premiered November 22, has surpassed the 2008 release of Mamma Mia! to become the highest-grossing adaptation of any stage musical in box-office history.
The Jon M. Chu-directed film, co-starring Tony winner Cynthia Erivo and Grammy winner
Ariana Grande, has taken in $634,378,535 globally after only six weeks in release. By comparison, the Meryl Streep-led Mamma Mia! took in $610,002,542 during its entire cinematic release.
Domestically, Wicked—which will be available for home viewers beginning December 31—has earned $424,230,535 domestically with an international box-office take of $210,148,000. Universal’s “Wicked” is officially the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in global box office history, overtaking 2008’s “Mamma Mia” to notch the harmonious milestone.
“Wicked” has generated $634 million worldwide after six weeks of release while “Mamma Mia” amassed $611 million (not adjusted for inflation) by the end of its box office run. “Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has earned $424 million domestically and, weeks ago, surpassed 1978’s “Grease” ($188.62 million) as the biggest Broadway adaptation at the domestic box office. These benchmarks are good news for Universal since the second half of the big-budget musical, “Wicked: For Good,” opens in 2025. This record is also notable because it bucks the recent trend of underseen stage-to-screen remakes, including 2023’s “The Color Purple” and 2021’s “West Side Story,” “Dear Evan Hansen” and “In the Heights.”
Meanwhile, Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” cemented a franchise record with $74 million in its international box office debut, the largest overseas opening in the family friendly series. This number has been slightly inflated to include preview screenings. However, the three-day figure still towers above 2022’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” which launched with $33 million from abroad markets. The third “Sonic” enjoyed the biggest start in the United Kingdom with $15.1 million, followed by Mexico with $10.3 million and France with $7.3 million. The film opens in 10 additional territories, including Korea, Brazil, and Italy, next weekend. “Sonic 3” opened nine days earlier in North America, where the animated adventure has generated $137 million to date for a global tally of $211 million.
Also new to international screens, “Nosferatu” collected $3 million from just five markets. The R-rated gothic tale, directed by Robert Eggers and starring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, will continue its overseas rollout in the new year. At the domestic box office, “Nosferatu” landed $21.1 million over the traditional weekend and $40.3 million over its first five days of release. Focus Features is releasing the film in North America while its parent company Universal is handling the distribution overseas.
Despite the newcomers, Disney’s “Mufasa” towered over international box office charts with $77.1 million from 52 material territories. The “Lion King” prequel seems to be rebounding after a rough start with ticket sales at $214 million internationally and $328 million globally to date.
Another Disney holdover, “Moana 2,” collected $36 million overseas over the weekend, bringing its international tally to $487.8 million. The animated adventure about a Polynesian wayfinder has amassed $882 million globally and is readying to swim past the $900 million mark. The “Moana” sequel adds to Disney’s impressive year, bolstered by the billion-dollar box office successes of “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
In a shocking turn of events, the beloved musical “Wicked” has officially overtaken “Mamma Mia” as the biggest Broadway adaptation globally. With its captivating storyline, memorable songs, and stunning performances, “Wicked” has captured the hearts of audiences around the world.
The show, which tells the untold story of the witches of Oz, has been a massive success since its debut in 2003. Its powerful message of friendship, acceptance, and empowerment has resonated with audiences of all ages, making it a must-see for theater lovers everywhere.
With its record-breaking box office sales and countless awards, “Wicked” has solidified its place as a true Broadway phenomenon. Fans can’t get enough of the show’s iconic characters, breathtaking costumes, and show-stopping musical numbers.
As “Wicked” continues to dazzle audiences around the globe, it’s clear that this timeless musical will remain a favorite for years to come. So grab your broomstick and get ready to be spellbound by the magic of “Wicked”!
It’s been nearly a year since the Wicked press (and subsequent memes) began, but just a little over a month since it finally made its highly anticipatedtheatrical debut. And as of Dec. 31, it’s already headed to the small screen. Consider this a late Christmas present.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande star as the green-skinned, magically gifted Elphaba and her pink-loving polar opposite bestie Glinda. The stage show’s lyricist, Stephen Schwartz, and playwright Winnie Holzman joined forces on the screenplay, while Jon M. Chu directed (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights). It also stars Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), and theJeff Goldblum. There are also some very noteworthy cameos.
The film adaptation of the classic 2003 Broadway musical starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth has already proven popular among audiences — bringing in $634 million worldwide and over $400 million domestically. We can only expect Wicked to soar even further with its small-screen debut.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch Wicked at home this season.
What is Wicked: Part 1 about?
Wicked is an adaptation of the Tony award-winning Broadway musical of the same name, which opened in 2003. The play itself is also an adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is basically a prequel to L. Frank Baum’s original novel The Wizard of Oz (as well as the iconic film from 1939). It tells the backstory of the green-skinned, misunderstood Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch of the West, as well as the popular and privileged Glinda the Good. The two witches meet as students at Shiz University in the Land of Oz and embark on a journey from loathing to an unexpectedly deep friendship. Part one of the two-part Wicked saga ultimately questions, “Are people born wicked? Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?”

Is Wicked worth watching?
Wicked: Part 1 set a new record for the biggest opening for a movie based on a Broadway show ever, grossing $424 million domestically to date. It’s not perfect, but it’s been largely well received by audiences and critics alike, currently sitting at an 88 percent critic rating and 95 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s earned four Golden Globes nominations, including Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, as well as acting nods for Erivo and Grande.
Mashable’s film editor Kristy Puchko called it “wonky, but at times wonderful,” noting that some of the cinematic choices by director Jon M. Chu drag it down. “Chu’s decision to turn Act 1 into a teen musical is marred by his dingy color palette, the crowded cinematography of Shiz (thankfully, things open up in the Emerald City), and directing his leading lady to play the titular witch as chiefly woeful. A show heralded for its high-energy song numbers, stage spectacle, and smirking sense of humor, Wicked is malformed by these choices. Yet, some sections are sure to have audiences cheering,” she writes.
While it’s still floating around in theaters, Wicked will make its at-home debut on major digital platforms (Prime Video, Apple TV+, etc.) on Dec. 31, 2024. The film will be exclusively available to buy or rent for $29.99 or $19.99, respectively. Plus, you’ll get loads of bonus content to enjoy alongside the film itself — including a singalong version, deleted and extended scenes, feature commentary, and a 40-minute journey through Oz.
Keep in mind that with rentals, you’ll only get 30 days to watch the film and just 48 hours to finish it once you start it. If you’d rather wait and stream Wicked instead, keep on scrolling for more information.
Here are some quick links to rent or purchase Wicked as of Dec. 31:
