‘Wicked’ makes its streaming debut — How to watch the movie on Prime Video

After 40 days in theaters, “Wicked” is now available to stream from video-on-demand (VOD) retailers, including Prime Video.

Based on the long-running Broadway musical of the same name (and the novel that inspired it), “Wicked” is a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” that explores the life of the Wicked Witch of the West before her encounter with Dorothy and a bucket of water. Named Elphaba in the musical and film, the Wicked Witch is played by Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo.

Green goes good — er, well — with pink, and Erivo fits perfectly with her co-star Ariana Grande, who portrays the iconic Glinda the Good.

In addition to near-universal acclaim, Erivo and Grande both received Golden Globe nominations for their work in the film.

While the Golden Globes won’t be decided until later this weekend, “Wicked” is available to watch at home right now, just in time to ring in the new year.

When is the “Wicked” digital release date?

“Wicked” is streaming on platforms like Prime Video beginning tomorrow, December 31, at 12:00 a.m. ET/9:00 p.m. PT.

How to watch “Wicked” on Prime Video:

“Wicked” will be available for digital purchase on Prime Video. The film costs $29.99.

While you won’t have to be a paid Amazon Prime member to buy “Wicked” digitally, you will need at least a free Amazon account; that way, you can return to watch “Wicked” as often as you’d like.

Right now, there is no information available about a rental price or date, but eventually, you’ll likely be able to rent “Wicked” for $24.99 (the standard rental price for new films).

When will “Wicked” be available to stream?

Eventually, “Wicked” will make its way to Peacock as it’s a Universal Pictures film, though no specific date has been announced yet.

The theatrical release to Peacock streaming date window has historically varied by title, but another big Universal film from 2024, “Twisters,” came to Peacock in mid-November, about four months after its July theatrical release.

It could be March, which would follow the “Twisters” timing; it could be later than March, but it could also be earlier.

When will “Wicked” leave theaters?

While no concrete date has been set, “Wicked” will likely stay in theaters through at least the end of January, especially with awards season heating up and Oscar nominations being announced on January 17.

Is “Wicked” two parts? When “Wicked” 2 come out?

Yes, “Wicked” is being released in two parts. “Wicked” part two, newly retitled “Wicked: For Good,” will hit theaters on November 21, 2025. The second part will cover Act Two of the musical.

“Wicked” 4K, Blu-ray, DVD release date:

‘Wicked’ Arrives On Digital Streaming This Week With Bonus Features

Wicked—Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s blockbuster movie musical—is coming to digital streaming this week along with a lot of extras.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked—which is the long-awaiting movie adaptation of the classic 2003 Broadway musical, opened in theaters nationwide on November 22.

The official logline for Wicked reads, “Elphaba (Erivo), a misunderstood young woman because of her green skin, and Glinda (Grande), a popular girl, become friends at Shiz University in the Land of Oz. After an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads.”

Universal Studios Home Entertainment announced in a press release that Wicked will debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Prime Video has Wicked up for pre-order for $29.99, which will be the film’s purchase price on PVOD. Since digital rentals are typically $5 less, viewers can expect to rent Wicked for a 48-period for $24.99.

In addition to Prime Video, Wicked will be available on a variety of digital platforms including AppleTV, VUDU, Comcast Xfinity, Cox and Microsoft Movies & TV.

According to The Numbers, Wicked to date has earned $411.6 million domestically and $187.6 million internationally for a running worldwide box office tally of $599.2 million against a $145 million production budget before prints and advertising.

Wicked was also a huge hit with Rotten Tomatoes critics, who collectively gave the film an 88% “fresh” rating based on 364 reviews.

Wicked also stars Michelle Yeoh as Madam Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Marissa Bode as Nessarose and Peter Dinklage as the voice of Dr. Dillamond.

2024 box office hits and misses: ‘Wicked’ soars, ‘Madame Web’ flops

Many movies soared at the box office in 2024, though some fell short of their highly anticipated releases.

Leading the pack was “Inside Out 2.” According to IMDb pro, the animated film brought in nearly $1.7 billion worldwide.

The animated sequel followed the main character, Riley, leaving childhood and entering her teenage years. With the change in age came a change in emotions, introducing the second film’s newest stars — Anxiety, Ennui and Envy.

The star-studded cast included Maya Hawke (Anxiety), Ayo Edebiri (Envy), Amy Poehler (Joy) and Tony Hale (Fear).

‘Wicked’

The highly anticipated “Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, was released in November and has already reached $580 million at the box office worldwide. The musical brought in $392 million domestically.

‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’

“Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” both did impressively well at the box office.

The Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet-led “Dune: Part Two” brought in $714 million worldwide and $282 million domestically. A third installment in the “Dune” franchise is expected to be released in 2026.

The animated “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” raked in $571 million worldwide and $196 million domestically.

‘It Ends With Us’

Blake Lively’s “It Ends With Us” topped the box office during its initial release in August.

The romantic drama starring Lively and Justin Baldoni surpassed expectations with a stellar $50 million debut.

“It Ends with Us” was out at the same time as “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which starred Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds. The two films took the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, the first time in 34 years a husband-and-wife duo topped the box office. The last time audiences enjoyed a moment like this was in 1990 when Bruce Willis’ “Die Hard 2” and Demi Moore’s “Ghost” took the top two spots.

While “It Ends With Us” hit the box office with impressive numbers, the promotional tour was marred by speculation of drama between Lively, Reynolds and Justin Baldoni, who directed and starred in the film.

Lively has since filed a complaint against Baldoni for sexual harassment, retaliation and infliction of emotional distress.

‘Red One’

The holiday film, released in November and is still showing in theaters, has brought in nearly $182 million worldwide and $95 million domestically.

‘The Fall Guy’

“The Fall Guy,” starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, did not do as well as anticipated.

The film released in May and brought in $181 million worldwide and nearly $93 million domestically.

The stars were both hot off the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, but their remake of the classic TV show did not perform nearly as well as Blunt’s “Oppenheimer” and Gosling’s “Barbie,” which both released last year.

‘Madame Web’

Worldwide, the female-dominated film brought in a mere $100 million worldwide and $43 million domestically. According to Gold Derby, the Marvel film had an $80 million budget.

‘Wicked’ stars announce movie’s digital release date: ‘Sing your heart out’
(WGN) – Can’t wait for “Wicked” to work its way to the VOD market? The release date may defy expectations — coming a lot sooner than fans may have expected.

“Wicked,” the mega musical movie of the season, will be available for digital purchase or rental on December 31.

A future ‘SNL’ star was almost cast in ‘Home Alone,’ but he blew his audition

Universal Pictures, as well as the movie’s stars, made the announcement Thursday online and on Instagram.

“Invite all your friends, because this one is going to be popular,” Ariana Grande said in an Instagram clip.

“Sing your heart out in the comfort of your home,” Cynthia Erivo added, perhaps acknowledging earlier reports that fans were out-singing the soundtrack at screenings.

Universal Pictures lists Apple TV, YouTube and Amazon Prime among the places where “Wicked” will be available to stream or purchase.

‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘Wicked’ advance in Oscars shortlists

The film, an adaptation of the Tony-winning musical (which itself was inspired by a 1995 book), has become a hit with viewers and critics since its November release. Grande and Erivo have also both been nominated for Golden Globes, and the film itself has been shortlisted for the Oscars.

Before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve, you’ll be able to watch Wicked, one of the biggest cinematic events of the year, in your own home.

Universal announced that Wicked will be available to either buy or rent through major digital retailers — including Apple TV, Prime Video, YouTube, Fandango Now, Comcast Xfinity, Microsoft Movies and TV, and Cox — on Dec. 31. This first home release comes with about three hours of bonus material, from deleted scenes to commentary to the singalong version of the movie.

Pre-orders for the DVD, Blu-ray, and 4k UHD — which arrive Feb. 4, 2025 — are also available now.

Stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, Hollywood’s Elphaba and Galinda/Glinda, helped announce the news alongside cast member Jeff Goldblum (the Wizard of Oz) in a new promo. “There is nowhere like home to watch Wicked,” Erivo said.

Wicked will still be playing in theaters as it makes its way to digital, however, for those still wanting to see Erivo’s “Defying Gravity” and Grande’s “Popular” on the big screen. The film, which will be the first of two parts, surpassed $392 million at the domestic box office and $580.9 million worldwide to date. Part 2, now titled Wicked: For Good, will release in theaters on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025.

Directed by Jon M. Chu and adapted from the hit Broadway musical, Wicked tells the story of how green-skinned Elphaba and her blonde, bubbly roommate at Shiz University, Galinda, became the Wicked Witch of the West and “Good Witch of the North” Glinda from The Wizard of Oz. The cast features Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, and Peter Dinklage.
