  • Widespread snow ahead for Wednesday morning – Boston News, Weather, Sports

We’ve got a few chances for snow over the next few days in Massachusetts, with the best bet early Wednesday morning.

Monday was supposed to be the quietest day this week, yet we kicked off the work week with an earthquake! At 10:23 a.m. there was a magnitude-3.8 earthquake centered over 6 miles southeast of York Harbor, Maine. Shaking was felt all across Massachusetts.

For the rest of your Monday evening it’ll be mostly clear, chilly and still breezy. Lows early Tuesday morning will get down to the mid to upper 20s, but that’ll feel like it’s 10 degrees colder than it really is due to the breezy conditions. We also have a chance for some hit-or-miss, isolated snow showers before 9 a.m. that could lead to some spotty coatings.

After that front rolls through, though, winds will pick up significantly. We’re expecting a whipping wind with gusts topping 35-40 mph at times.

So while afternoon highs might reach the 30s, that’ll only feel like the teens. Bundle up!

The wind dies back down Tuesday evening. Wednesday morning lows will be back to the teens, and that’s when we have the better chance for more widespread snow showers. The snow will be light, but most widespread, in the morning. Snow becomes more scattered into the afternoon, but that scattered snow has more of an ability to pack a punch with heavier snowfall rates. Most of us will pick up between 1-2 inches with just a coating to an inch for the southeast coast.

Thursday will be breezy again but no where at the level of Tuesday’s wind. However, with lows in the teens and highs only in the 20s, a slight breeze will make it feel like it’s in the single digits and teens all day long. At least the sun will be shining.

As we usher into Friday and the weekend, the weather becomes a little bit unsettled again. We’re tracking our next chances for rain and snow.

  • VBCPS buses experience widespread mechanical issues amid winter weather

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Service trucks were dispatched to repair numerous Virginia Beach City Public School buses experiencing mechanical problems on Tuesday.

VBCPS told News 3 that 71 buses faced various mechanical issues, including frozen doors, air leaks, and failure to start. The buses reporting problems were spread across the city.

Four service trucks were sent out to address the issues with the buses.

Additionally, VBCPS noted that the high number of callouts on Tuesday exacerbated the situation. Thirty-five drivers called out on Tuesday morning, bringing the total number of absent drivers to 75.

This figure is double that of a typical day, according to VBCPS.

News 3 is also taking a look at how school divisions decide whether or not to cancel school for winter weather.

School leaders engage with meteorologists and first responders to receive updates on the conditions affecting transportation. Additionally, they consult with other school divisions to gauge the broader impact of weather on operations.

Last year, News 3 got a firsthand look into the decision-making process of Chesapeake school leaders emphasized their commitment to safety.

“We’d rather have a safe student or a safe staff member on a day like this than to go the other way and have something go wrong,” said Paul Wilson, Chesapeake Public Schools Director of Student Support Services, during an interview in 2024.

Their preparations often begin in the wee hours of the morning.

“We’re checking bridges, we’re checking overpasses just to try and make a determination on if there is any frozen precipitation if it’s starting to accumulate on the roads,” said Dr. David Benson, the Director of Transportation in 2024.

A collaborative efforts goes into whether or not school will be canceled.

“We can use all the data that we’ve collected and make the best decision or best recommendation possible to our superintendent, who ultimately makes the final decision as to whether or not we’re going to close, we’re going to be delayed, or we’re going to open as usual,” said Dr. Benson.

As winter weather sweeps across Virginia Beach, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) buses are facing widespread mechanical issues. The frigid temperatures and icy conditions are putting a strain on the fleet of buses, leading to delays and cancellations for students.

Many buses have been experiencing issues such as engine malfunctions, frozen fuel lines, and battery failures. This has resulted in numerous breakdowns and delays in picking up and dropping off students at their designated stops.

Parents and students have voiced their frustrations over the unreliable bus service, with some students even missing important exams and classes due to the delays. VBCPS officials have acknowledged the problems and are working to address the issues as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, parents are advised to stay informed about any updates or changes to the bus schedule and to make alternative transportation arrangements if necessary. The safety and well-being of students remain a top priority for VBCPS, and efforts are being made to ensure that all students are transported safely to and from school despite the challenging winter conditions.

  • Snow and sleet continues, widespread travel impacts through Wednesday

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – Heavy snow and sleet has led to snow covered roads and impressive snow totals in the area.

We’ve already picked up on multiple locations in Horry County with 5 to 6 inches of snow overnight as a sleet continues to mix in early this morning.

    SEND US YOUR WEATHER PHOTOS/VIDEOS

A WINTER STORM WARNING – The WINTER STORM WARNING continues for the entire area. Snow and sleet continues through the early morning hours today before we shut things off just before sunrise this morning. When all is said and done, expect most of Horry and Georgetown County to see 4″ – 6″ of snow with isolated higher totals possible.

    Heavy snow will continue overnight
    Heavy snow will continue overnight(WMBF)

Temperatures are bitterly cold this morning with many of us sitting in the low-mid 20s. When you factor in the wind, the wind chill is in the single digits and teens out there this morning. Factor in the cold with less traveled roads overnight and it’s an absolute mess on the roads this morning. We continue to recommend you stay off the roads today until we see major improvements.

Highs today will only reach the upper 20s. A wind chill will likely be in the teens through...
Highs today will only reach the upper 20s. A wind chill will likely be in the teens through the entire day today.(WMBF)

Highs today will remain cold and only climb into the upper 20s thanks to the snow pack on the ground. Even with the return of sunshine, wind chills throughout the day will make it feel like the teens at best. While you spend time outside playing in the snow with the kids, make sure you are bundled up for the dangerously cold temperatures.

    TRAVEL IMPACTS

As mentioned above, travel is not advised today. Roads have become less traveled overnight and have frozen up in many spots. The layer of sleet this morning has actually hurt things more than helped. Travel is expected to remain treacherous through most of the day. Hang tight as the crews continue to work diligently on the roads.

Please stay home today. Travel is not recommended and we're looking at widespread issues from...
Please stay home today. Travel is not recommended and we’re looking at widespread issues from the snow and sleet overnight.(WMBF)

With temperatures expected to stay below freezing today, we don’t anticipate any melting. Anything that does slush up from travel today will refreeze tonight as temperatures fall into the teens overnight.

    WHEN DO WE WARM UP?

It’s going to be a slow process but we should see temperatures climb a couple degrees above freezing on Thursday afternoon. Despite a cold start, travel and warmer than freezing temperatures will allow for roads to improve by the end of the week. We’re still holding onto an isolated shower for Thursday’s forecast. At this point, any rain chance would be light and mainly in the form of a drizzle. We’ll need to keep an eye on the timing in case temperatures are still near or below freezing.

Temperatures will warm up as we head into the weekend and expect travel conditions to improve...
Temperatures will warm up as we head into the weekend and expect travel conditions to improve by the end of the week.(WMBF)

Mornings will remain cold with temperatures in the 20s through the upcoming weekend. Afternoon temperatures will return to the 40s by Friday and slowly climb back into the upper 40s and lower 50s by Sunday afternoon.

As winter weather persists, snow and sleet are expected to continue across much of the country, leading to widespread travel impacts through Wednesday.

With icy roads, reduced visibility, and possible flight delays, travelers are advised to exercise caution and plan accordingly. Road crews are working around the clock to clear highways and streets, but conditions may still be treacherous.

If you must travel, make sure to check road conditions and weather updates before heading out. Allow for extra travel time and drive slowly to ensure your safety and the safety of others.

Stay warm and stay safe as we weather this winter storm together. Let’s all do our part to minimize the impacts of this wintry weather and keep our communities safe.

  • Orlando weather: Widespread rain moving in, strong cold front ahead: Is snow on the way?

Widespread rain is starting to move in ahead of a strong cold front that brings the chance of severe weather on Sunday.

There is a marginal risk for the potential of a stronger thunderstorm in the northwestern parts of the viewing area.

Tonight, expect cloudy skies and temperatures dropping into the mid 60s. Winds also will start to pick up tonight.

    Prepare for impact day

Sunday, a strong cold front will swing through Central Florida.

There is a marginal risk for the potential of a stronger thunderstorm in most of the viewing area. The main threats include gusty winds and heavy rain at times.

However, there is the potential for a few stronger storms and a quick spin up (chance is very low, but not zero).

Showers will taper off on Sunday night, and the cold air invades Central Florida.

We are looking at highs around 20 degrees cooler, with the highs dropping back down to the 50s to start off the workweek.

    Winter weather?

There also is potential for an impact day on Wednesday.

A low pressure system will start to organize off the coast of Texas, picking up moisture with the warm air from the gulf.

This will interact with the arctic air surging down into the Southeast from this weekend’s cold front and will bring the potential for snow and freezing rain into the deep south and Florida.

Areas of our WOGX counties could see the potential for icing and freezing rain.

It’s still too early to really pinpoint how far south the freezing potential will be at the moment, but be prepared for roads to be very slick up the I-75 corridor.

Orlando weather update: Widespread rain moving in, strong cold front ahead – Is snow on the way?

Residents of Orlando, get ready to grab your umbrellas and rain boots because a widespread rain system is moving into the area. The soggy weather is expected to stick around for the next few days as a strong cold front approaches.

But the big question on everyone’s mind is: could we see snow in Orlando? While it’s highly unlikely for snow to fall in the Sunshine State, the arrival of a strong cold front does bring the possibility of some wintry precipitation in central Florida.

Meteorologists are keeping a close eye on the forecast to see if the conditions align for any snow flurries to make an appearance. While it’s still too early to tell if we’ll see any snow, it’s always exciting to dream of a winter wonderland in Orlando.

In the meantime, be sure to stay updated on the latest weather alerts and advisories, and stay safe on the roads as the rain and potential cold weather move in. And who knows, maybe we’ll get lucky and see a few snowflakes fluttering down in Orlando. Stay tuned for more updates on the weather situation in the coming days.

  • San Francisco house prices plunge amid widespread tech layoffs

San Francisco house prices plunge amid widespread tech layoffs

The Golden City is losing its shine.

Housing prices in San Francisco have plunged to pre-pandemic levels amid widespread layoffs in the tech sector, SFGATE reports.

Despite still being one of the more expensive metropolitan areas in the US, prices for condominiums and co-ops in the city were down 14.7% from May 2022 and now average $986,000.

Those prices have not been seen since 2015, according to Zillow data analyzed by Wolf Street.

SFGATE and Wolf Street reported that the prices of single family homes have hit 2019 levels in San Francisco. Aaron – stock.adobe.com

Single-family homes are down 15.4% from their peak in 2022, now at an average of $1.39 million, according to data provided to SFGATE by a Zillow representative.

According to the outlet, condo prices doubled between 2012 and 2022, but have now declined by 30% in the past two years.

The Millennium Tower, notorious for being the leaning tower of San Francisco, saw a 44% decrease in price per unit. In September, SFGATE reports, one condo sold for $615,000. A decade prior, it sold for $1.1 million.

The outlets also reported that the price decreases coincide with layoffs in the city. Sundry Photography – stock.adobe.com

The decrease in housing costs coincides with widespread tech layoffs, according to Wolf Street, which reported that the “Information” industry saw a 20% decrease in its workforce over more than two years since its peak.

In the “Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services” industry, there was a 7% decrease in employees compared to June 2022.

According to SFGATE, there were 10,200 permanent layoffs filed in the city during 2023.

In a recent report, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) stated that home prices across the country are predicted to go up in 2025, albeit much slower than years prior, estimating a 2% increase in cost to a median of $410,700.

“Home buyers will have more success next year,” Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist and senior vice president of research, said in the report.

“The worst of the affordability challenges are over as more inventory, stable mortgage rates and continued job and income growth pave the way for more Americans to achieve homeownership.”

San Francisco house prices have seen a sharp decline in recent months as the tech industry, which has long been the driving force behind the city’s real estate market, has been hit hard by widespread layoffs and restructurings.

With companies like Uber, Airbnb, and Yelp announcing significant job cuts, many tech workers are now reconsidering their living situations in the city, leading to a surplus of available housing and a decrease in demand. This has resulted in a significant drop in house prices, with some neighborhoods seeing double-digit percentage decreases in home values.

For many homeowners and real estate investors in San Francisco, this sudden downturn in the market has come as a shock, as the city has been known for its consistently strong and competitive housing market. However, with the current economic uncertainty and job insecurity in the tech sector, many are now facing the reality of selling their homes at a much lower price than expected.

As the tech industry continues to navigate through these challenging times, it remains to be seen how long the housing market in San Francisco will be impacted. In the meantime, potential buyers may find this a prime opportunity to purchase a home in the city at a more affordable price.

  • Widespread showers and a few storms to end the weekend

Widespread showers and a few storms to end the weekend

A trough in the southeast will advance to the northeast this morning which will push forward its associated cold front towards northern Florida throughout the day. This will increase chances for scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms this morning through the early evening. As this frontal boundary moves forward, it will eventually stall out over our area.

High temperatures this afternoon will be seasonable in the 70s.

Winds will shift from the southeast to the southwest by this evening which will bring ample moisture to South Florida which will continue to bring scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Rainfall totals will generally be around 1 inch over the next 24 hours, but localized higher amounts are possible.

Rain chances do drop after the weekend. Ahead of our next front, expect an isolated rain chance and seasonable temperatures.

As the weekend comes to a close, we can expect widespread showers and a few storms to move through the area. Make sure to grab your umbrella and raincoat before heading out, as these showers are expected to linger throughout the evening.

While the rain may put a damper on outdoor plans, it is much needed to help alleviate dry conditions in the area. Remember to drive cautiously on wet roads and stay indoors if thunderstorms develop.

Stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and be prepared for the rainy end to the weekend. Stay safe and dry, everyone! #rainyday #stormyweather

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) plays a crucial role in ensuring the integrity of the healthcare system and protecting taxpayer dollars from fraud and abuse. However, a recent report to congressional requesters has highlighted the need for CMS to ensure more widespread use of fraud detection systems.

Fraud detection systems are essential tools for identifying and preventing fraudulent activities within the healthcare system. These systems use advanced analytics and algorithmic technology to analyze claims data, identify patterns of fraudulent behavior, and flag suspicious activity for further investigation.

Despite the importance of these systems, the report found that not all Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) – the entities responsible for processing and paying Medicare claims – are using fraud detection systems to their full potential. In fact, some MACs have not implemented fraud detection systems at all, leaving them vulnerable to fraudulent activity.

The report also highlighted the need for CMS to provide better guidance and oversight to ensure that all MACs are effectively using fraud detection systems. This includes developing clear guidelines for the implementation and use of these systems, as well as conducting regular audits to ensure compliance.

By ensuring more widespread use of fraud detection systems, CMS can better protect taxpayer dollars, reduce the prevalence of fraudulent activity within the healthcare system, and ultimately improve the overall integrity of Medicare and Medicaid. It is imperative that CMS takes action to address the findings of this report and strengthen its efforts to combat fraud and abuse in healthcare.
