  • Player Ratings From Miami’s First Win Under Javier Mascherano

Inter Miami put on a show in Panama and walked away with a comfortable 1–3 victory against Sporting San Miguelito.

Coming off of back-to-back draws this preseason, Inter Miami headed to Panama hoping to collect their first regular time win under new head coach, Javier Mascherano. The Herons quickly found themselves on the backfoot, though, after Sporting San Miguelito’s Adan Hendricks scored in the 24th minute.

Miami responded with constant pressure that eventually paid off on the brink of halftime. In his first start this preseason, 19-year-old Benjamin Cremaschi found the back of the net to put his side level.

Mascherano’s men came out of the tunnel with a point to prove. Tadeo Allende gave Miami the lead just three minutes into the second half, scoring his first goal in a pink shirt. Fafà Picault followed up his new teammate with a goal of his own to put Miami in full control of the match.

Things went from bad to worse for the hosts when Aymar Cundumí was sent off in the 71st minute. Now against 10 men, Miami cruised through the remainder of the match and finally secured a non-penalty shootout victory.

  • DE Myles Garrett requests a trade from the Browns, says he wants to win a Super Bowl

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has requested a trade, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. In a statement shared by Rapoport, Garrett said that his desire to win a Super Bowl was driving his decision to leave.

“As a kid dreaming of the NFL, all I focused on was the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl — and that goal fuels me today more than ever. My love for the community of Northeast Ohio and the incredible fanbase of the Cleveland Browns has made this one of the toughest decisions of my life. These past eight years have shaped me into the man that I am today,” Garrett wrote.

Garrett added that he cared more about winning a championship than about becoming an NFL Hall of Famer.

“While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent. The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl,” he said.

Garrett, a six-time Pro Bowler and the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, has spent his entire eight-year career with the Browns. The team drafted him first overall out of Texas A&M in 2017.

    This story will be updated.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has reportedly requested a trade from the team, citing his desire to win a Super Bowl.

Garrett, who was the first overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, has been a standout player for the Browns since entering the league. However, despite his individual success, the team has struggled to make a deep playoff run.

In a statement released by his agent, Garrett expressed his desire to play for a team that has a better chance of winning a championship. He praised the Browns organization and fans for their support but ultimately feels that a change is necessary for him to achieve his ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl.

The news of Garrett’s trade request has sent shockwaves through the NFL, with many teams likely to be interested in acquiring the talented pass rusher. It remains to be seen where Garrett will end up, but one thing is certain – he is determined to do whatever it takes to bring a Lombardi Trophy to his new team.

  • Myles Garrett requests trade after eight seasons with Browns, citing ‘desire to win’

Garrett, 29, is coming off his seventh straight double-digit sack season, including four straight with 14 or more. He has earned five straight Pro Bowl bids, has four career first-team All-Pro honors and is the reigning AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry said last week “you can put that on the record” that he wasn’t interested in trading Garrett, even for two first-round picks. Berry even indicated the franchise wanted to sign Garrett to an extension.

Rapoport reported on Monday that the Browns’ stance on Garrett has not changed following his request.

Garrett signed a five-year, $125 million extension in 2020, leaving two years left on the deal. His contract carries salary-cap hits of $19.7 million and $20.4 million in 2025 and 2026, respectively. Garrett is due a roster bonus worth $5 million on the fifth day of the league year on March 16.

The Browns have been fairly competitive for most of Garrett’s run in Cleveland, although they have made the postseason only twice in his time with the team. Things bottomed out last season as Cleveland dropped to a 3-14 record, even with Garrett leading the NFL with 22 tackles for loss and just one year after an 11-win campaign with the league’s top-ranked defense.

Now his time in Cleveland might be nearing an end.

After eight seasons with the Cleveland Browns, star defensive end Myles Garrett has officially requested a trade from the team. In a statement released by his agent, Garrett cited his “desire to win” as the primary reason for his decision to seek a new team.

Garrett, who was selected first overall by the Browns in the 2017 NFL Draft, has been a standout player for the team since his rookie season. Known for his exceptional pass-rushing abilities and disruptive presence on the field, Garrett has been a key player for the Browns defense.

Despite his individual success, Garrett has yet to experience team success with the Browns, as the team has struggled to make the playoffs during his tenure. In his statement, Garrett expressed his frustration with the team’s lack of success and his belief that a change of scenery would provide him with a better opportunity to compete for a championship.

While the Browns have yet to comment on Garrett’s trade request, it is clear that the talented defensive end is looking for a fresh start with a team that can provide him with a chance to win. As one of the top defensive players in the league, Garrett is sure to attract interest from teams around the NFL as he looks to continue his career elsewhere. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Jordan Chiles scores perfect 10 in UCLA gymnastics’ comeback win over Michigan State – Daily News

LOS ANGELES — The No. 6 UCLA gymnastics team keyed in on the intensity of floor exercise in the fourth and final rotation of the meet to pull off a comeback win over No. 5 Michigan State on Saturday afternoon.

Chiles was battling illness all week and had a 104-degree fever on Wednesday but still managed to score a perfect 10.0 with her Prince-themed routine that allowed UCLA to edge Michigan State 197.300-197.200.

The 197.300 extends UCLA’s streak of scoring 197 or higher to four meets.

“I’ve done the flu game once before,” Chiles said. “If you take it back to 2017. It’s not fun but I knew in that moment that no matter what, how strong I am and I have people around me that can help me and support me. At the end of the day, we’re going to just keep pushing forward and I knew what my role was.”

Emma Malabuyo finished first on balance beam and UCLA claimed the top four spots in floor exercise to hand Michigan State its first Big Ten loss of the season.

UCLA (6-2 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) was trailing by roughly one point heading into floor — an event that it ranked second nationally in. Emily Lee made her season debut in the event and kicked off the team’s signature “floor party” with a 9.875.

The individual scores steadily climbed after that and each gymnast scored 9.900 or above. Brooklyn Moors and Chae Campbell each hit 9.975, which marked a career-high for Moors, to help boost UCLA to a nation-high 49.800 event score.

“We literally had no words after that,” Moors said. “We put everything we had and more into that last rotation. I think it’s just knowing that the work we’re doing is paying off and we’ll see more tens soon.”

UCLA led early on but fell behind at the midway point of the meet, which was the first gymnastics meet to ever be televised nationally on FOX.

The fourth-ranked vault squad in the nation allowed Michigan State (5-2, 2-1) to take a 98.900-98.500 lead. Three out of six gymnasts recorded a 9.950 on vault for a 49.600 team score — which outdid the Bruins’ 49.350.

Chiles scored a team-best 9.925 on vault but had a major deduction on uneven bars that hurt UCLA’s overall event score. No gymnasts surpassed a 9.850, which resulted in a season-low team score of 49.150.

Chiles recovered from the uncharacteristic performance and an impromptu dismount change on bars to hit a sharp routine on balance beam. She scored a 9.850 in her second competitive appearance of the season in the event.

“One thing about me when I’m sick is I forget how my brain works on bars,” Chiles said. “I just got frustrated and was like, I already forgot to do my pirouette, I forgot to do a while skill so I might as well do a double layout. I just need to get off of bars.”

Ciena Alipio’s score suffered a deduction when she fell on beam before calmly resuming the choreography with a side leg extension. Malabuyo was the next and final competitor on the apparatus, and her experience showed.

The Philippines Olympian danced next to the beam while waiting for her cue to perform, then delivered a 9.925 score to anchor the Bruins and get them to a 49.00 event score.

“Her getting up and nailing that beam routine was critical in resetting the tone,” head coach Janelle McDonald said. “It allowed us to go to floor and compete freely and aggressively. Emma has an incredible energy about her.”

UCLA secured the win on national television and in front of a Pauley Pavilion crowd of 10,681 during its annual alumni meet.

“Everyone really rallied behind us and we could feel that when we were coming from behind,” Campbell said. “It’s always special. We love drama, apparently.”

  • Cooper Flagg leads Duke to blowout win over rival North Carolina

DURHAM, N.C. — In his first taste of the DukeNorth Carolina rivalry, Cooper Flagg delivered arguably the most complete performance of his career to lead the Blue Devils to a dominant 87-70 victory Saturday night.

Flagg scored or assisted on each of Duke’s first six baskets as the Blue Devils raced to an early lead, and his final line — 21 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots — proved to be an emphatic debut in one of the country’s great rivalries. It was also the latest example that, as Duke coach Jon Scheyer said, Flagg is a basketball “savant.”

“It might be [my best college game],” Flagg said, “but for me, I’m just trying to make the right plays. Four of the first six baskets I assisted. That’s huge for me to find my teammates and make plays for them.”

The stellar performance still fell short of what Flagg might have done, Scheyer said. Flagg played all but the final 47 seconds of the second half, and Scheyer thought his star freshman was worn down toward the end, when North Carolina cut Duke’s lead from 32 with 9:04 to play to 16 at the 2:59 mark.

Flagg said he was angry with his — and Duke’s — performance in that late stretch, despite the lopsided win.

“It was a little bit of me being tired and making some dumb mistakes at the end,” Flagg said. “Being soft at the end kind of played into that.”

Scheyer took responsibility for Flagg’s slow finish but added it’s rare to post such gaudy numbers and still find room for criticism.

“He almost had a triple-double, and he wasn’t quite himself [at the end],” Scheyer said. “But besides that segment, he was just in control the entire game. He makes everybody better around him, and it’s a heck of a thing to have 21, 8 and 7 and you think he could’ve done more.”

Flagg’s ability to involve teammates was at the forefront of Saturday’s win. In the first five minutes, he racked up four assists, two steals and a rebound.

Fellow Duke freshman Kon Knueppel finished with a game-high 22 points and five assists. Flagg and Knueppel are the first teammates to each tally 20 points and five assists in a game in this rivalry in 15 years. The last duo was Duke’s Scheyer and Nolan Smith.

“They absolutely feed off each other,” Scheyer said. “It starts with their competitiveness. They play both sides of the ball. They have high-level feel. … Add in their skill and versatility. Kon’s posting and shooting and pick-and-roll. And everybody knows, Cooper’s already doing everything. They have a great thing. There’s a lot of maturity with both of them.”

Despite that maturity, this was still their first time experiencing the rivalry. As a recruit, Flagg sat behind the Duke bench last season as the Tar Heels mustered an 84-79 win in Cameron Indoor Stadium. North Carolina players chirped at Duke’s squad throughout, and Flagg said he remembered the Tar Heels taunting the Cameron Crazies after it was over, which he said added a bit of motivation this time.

Flagg admitted to some pregame nerves in an environment he described as “really loud and hot,” but he said once the game tipped off, he was locked on the action.

“You could definitely feel a different energy tonight,” Flagg said. “For us, it’s just another game. We came out and executed our game plan, did what we were trying to do, and came out with the win. It’s another game, and we’re chasing a big mission this year.”

In a highly anticipated matchup between bitter rivals Duke and North Carolina, Cooper Flagg proved to be the difference maker as he led Duke to a dominant blowout win.

From the opening tip-off, Flagg set the tone with his aggressive play on both ends of the court. His ability to drive to the basket and finish with authority, as well as his tenacious defense, kept North Carolina on their heels throughout the game.

Flagg’s leadership and scoring prowess were on full display as he poured in a game-high 30 points, showcasing his versatile skill set and ability to take over a game when his team needed him most.

Not only did Flagg shine individually, but he also got his teammates involved, creating scoring opportunities for his fellow Blue Devils and helping to build a commanding lead that North Carolina couldn’t overcome.

By the final buzzer, Duke had secured a resounding victory over their rivals, with Flagg’s stellar performance leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed his dominance on the court.

With Flagg leading the way, Duke looks poised to make a deep run in the postseason, and their rivals will surely be on notice as they continue to showcase their talent and determination to succeed.

  • Watch the Grammys tonight as Shaboozey pushes for a country win — and acceptance

Shaboozey goes into this Sunday’s Grammy Awards with five nominations, including song of the year, country song of the year and country solo performance for his cross-genre smash, “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” The song was released shortly after Shaboozey was featured on two songs on Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” album, and he’s also up for a best melodic rap performance Grammy for their collaboration “Spaghettii.”

The Grammy nods are just the latest milestones for Shaboozey, who will be starring in a Super Bowl commercial for the candy Nerds before performing at both the pop/rock-oriented Coachella festival and its country cousin, the Stagecoach Festival, in the coming months.

Arguably no Black artist has ever burst onto the country music charts with a bigger splash than Shaboozey.

Historically, only a very small number of Black artists have ever built sustained careers in country music. So far, they’ve all been men. Darius Rucker has been a country mainstay for years, but his success with Hootie & the Blowfish provided a crossover leg up. Arguably no Black artist has ever burst onto the country music charts with a bigger splash than Shaboozey.

The 29-year-old Virginia native was raised on a mix of his dad’s Kenny Rogers albums and the pop and hip-hop he heard on MTV and BET, leading to a sound that mixes country and hip-hop. Rissi Palmer, the musician, activist and host of Apple Radio’s “Color Me Country,” played Shaboozey’s music on her show long before he released his crossover megahit “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” last year. As Palmer told me, his music has long “straddled the line,” with “vibes of Norman North and early Jelly Roll.”

Though he appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards and performed at the BET Awards over the summer, Shaboozey has also performed at country spaces like the Grand Ole Opry, the CMA Music Festival in Nashville, and the CMA Awards, where he was nominated for single of the year and new artist of the year. A few comments made about Shaboozey’s name during the CMA Awards drew criticism, but Shaboozey himself has steered clear of making too many statements on political issues or the lack of diversity in country music.

Lyrically, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is in line with country music’s long-standing penchant for celebrating around-the-clock drinking. The song was a massive hit in the country format, becoming the first song by a Black man to simultaneously top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart — which it did for 27 weeks — and its Country Airplay chart, for a seven-week run. The country radio support is noteworthy; the format has not typically supported viral hits from Black artists.

Black artists have slowly but surely been gaining traction. But the reception from the various country institutions continues to be mixed, if not contradictory.

With 19 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 chart, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has now tied Lil Nas X’s 2019 country-rap smash “Old Town Road” for the most weeks atop that tally. However, “Old Town Road” was removed from Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, which measures radio play, streaming numbers and sales figures for country tracks. Despite its Western themes, the artist’s Georgia twang and a remix featuring country star Billy Ray Cyrus, Billboard claimed that “Old Town Road” “does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.” “Old Town Road” eventually won a CMA Award for musical event of the year in 2019, but that trophy was presented off camera. Lil Nas X went on to find further success in pop music with his next album, 2021’s “Montero,” which was not promoted to the country format.

Also in 2019, hip-hop producer-turned-artist Blanco Brown scored a viral hit with the “The Git Up,” which was touted as a “sequel” to “Old Town Road.” Unlike Lil Nas X’s song, Blanco’s track did go to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart but stalled out at No. 44 on the Country Airplay chart.

Also unlike Lil Nas X, Brown had the backing of a Nashville-based record label, Broken Bow Records. He scored a top country radio hit in 2021 with “Just the Way,” a collaboration with his label mates, country group Parmalee. Since then, Brown has not charted another song on either country chart, and he recently posted about having a gig canceled due to rising racial tensions.

Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” going all the way to No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart marks progress in this narrative. But membership in Nashville’s inner circle is signified by consistent play on country radio, and charting one massive hit doesn’t guarantee more will follow, especially for artists of color.

“We know that Black women have virtually no shot at gaining traction in mainstream country music,” writes The Tennessean columnist Andrea Williams. “Black men seem to be doing a bit better — there’s Charley and Darius, after all — but it’s all a façade. Black male artists like Blanco Brown, like Breland, like Shaboozey are given one hit — an uptempo, hip hop-tinged hit that has those “Song of the Summer” vibes — and then they tend to disappear. Rather, they lose all industry support, so it feels like they’ve disappeared, even though, in most cases, they’re still grinding behind the scenes and trying to build something sustainable.”

The country music radio scene is particularly complicated and often based on personal relationships.

The country music radio scene is particularly complicated and often based on personal relationships. Artists have to prove they belong.

Shaboozey is signed to independent record label Empire, the same company that previously helped launch Kane Brown’s country career. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” was the the first No. 1 country radio hit for Empire’s Nashville office. Along the way, the Empire team helped Shaboozey develop relationships with the decision-makers at country radio that would program his singles. That practice of artists having to personally win over program directors is unique to country music.

Global superstar Beyoncé did not engage in a charm offensive to win over country music insiders when she released “Cowboy Carter, and it didn’t go unnoticed. The project hit No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and she became the first Black woman to have a single top the country charts with “Texas Hold ’Em.” But she received zero nominations at last year’s CMA Awards.

Notably, white male hip-hop artists seem to have an easier time achieving crossover success on country radio. Jelly Roll is up for two Grammys in country categories this year, after previously releasing seven hip-hop albums. He’s also racked up five country radio chart toppers since 2022. Rap/pop superstar Post Malone has made a similar leap, earning two No. 1 country radio hits (so far) from his star-studded “F-1 Trillion” album, which is up for best country album at Sunday’s Grammys.

Shaboozey’s follow-up singles to “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” are not racing up the Country Airplay chart. Some Grammy wins could give those follow-up singles — like “Good News” and “Highway” — a boost. Regardless, Shaboozey is doubling down. He recently told Billboard his “next project is going to be even more country.”

For Palmer, seeing Shaboozey achieve country radio longevity would be a welcome and surprising development. “Shaboozey has put down roots as a country artist,” she told me. “Personally, I would like to see him treated as a viable country artist and not just a novelty or a byproduct of Beyoncé stopping by.”

Williams has a less optimistic view. The fact that he didn’t win any trophies at the CMA Awards, despite having the biggest country single of 2024, may indicate where Shaboozey’s story is headed.

“He’ll have the hit song that makes everybody dance, but he won’t have the follow-up success that will allow him to book shows and make music and win awards in the future,” she said. “By limiting Shaboozey to just that one hit, it also ensures his name is just a footnote instead of a full entry in country music’s history books. This way, the status quo stands.”

Are you ready for some exciting country music at the Grammy Awards tonight? Be sure to tune in and watch as Shaboozey pushes for a country win and acceptance in the music industry. With his unique sound and undeniable talent, Shaboozey is making waves in the country music scene and is determined to make his mark at the Grammys. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable moment as Shaboozey takes the stage and shows the world what country music is all about. #Shaboozey #Grammys #CountryMusicWin

  • Defense wakes up, leads Huskers to win over No.18 Illinois

Fred Hoiberg said it on Wednesday when talking about his Nebraska basketball team that had dropped six straight games to Big Ten competition.

“We got to get a win. We have to get a win to get our guys some confidence and to get out of that mentality of, ‘here we go again,’” Hoiberg said then.

How about a massive upset win in overtime over the No. 18 Illinois Fighting Illini in your house, in front of your fans?

That should spark something and get the good vibes going again. Perhaps it’ll pump some life and that all-important confidence Hoiberg talked about back into the Huskers.

Behind a game-high 27 points from Brice Williams, which included eight of the Huskers’ 10 points in the extra period, Nebraska snapped its six-game losing streak with an 80-74 overtime win against Brad Underwood’s Fighting Illini on Thursday night inside Pinnacle Bank Arena.

With Illinois currently coming in at No. 10 in the NET ratings, that’s a nice Quad 1 win on the resume, should Nebraska need it at tournament time.

“Brice was absolutely phenomenal there down the stretch,” Hoiberg said after the game. “…We rode him all the way to the finish line. I’m proud of our guys. We needed this one in a big way.”

Williams recorded his ninth 20-point game of the season and 25th of his career. His 10 made field goals tied his season-high. Williams also had a season-high eight rebounds and four assists.

Hoiberg thought Williams was playing with the confidence he had from earlier this season.

“He was aggressive and he took his shots, no hesitation,” Hoiberg said. “I thought he guarded better out there. He rebounded, had five defensive rebounds. I’m just really pleased with Brice and how he responded. We’ve had a tough couple days, and we knew how big this game was for us to hopefully end this slide.”

Nebraska improves to 13-8 overall and 3-7 in the Big Ten while Illinois drops to 14-7, 6-5.

Neither team shot it well — Illinois was at 36%, Nebraska 40% — and Williams took 26 shots to get his 27 points. But Nebraska’s best player knew what to credit for the win after the game.

“Our defense kept us in the game,” Williams said. “We reached most of our goals tonight. We had to wake up, and tonight we woke up.”

Illinois, which was without its 7-foot-1 center and second-leading scorer for the third consecutive game, Tomislav Ivisic, came into the game with the top offense in league play at 85.8 points per contest.

But Nebraska’s defense, under fire the past three weeks for good reason, played much better on Thursday. Wasn’t perfect, Hoiberg said after the game, but certainly good enough, especially when it mattered the most, in overtime, when Illinois scored just four points.

Nebraska had a 10-point lead, 54-44, with 12:20 left in the second half. That edge disappeared when the Illini started seeing success with ghost actions where they slipped screens and knocked down 3s — they hit seven treys in the final 20 minutes.

But the Huskers stayed with it and communicated better defensively while getting key buckets from Williams down the stretch.

“We kept guarding, and that’s what we were looking to get back to,” Hoiberg said. “It’s obviously not always going to be pretty with this team, but if we guard like we did tonight, we’re gonna have a chance most nights that we step on the floor.”

The Huskers hounded Kasparas Jakucionis all night, too. Illinois’ star true freshman point guard from Lithuania, who could be a top-10 pick in the upcoming NBA draft, scored 18 points, which is better than his 15.9 average coming into the game, but he took 15 shots, went 3-of-10 from 3 and 3-of-4 at the free-throw line to get there.

But even when Illinois’ other future NBA player, true freshman Will Riley, went berserk in the second half and scored 13 points with three 3s, and Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn hit the game-tying 3 to send the game into overtime, Hoiberg said he saw improvement in the huddle.

“We never hung our heads. And that was the thing — when you get in the huddle and you got eye contact, and guys are talking to each other before we even get in there and start teaching, that’s growth,” Hoiberg said.

One area of the win that stuck out was the Huskers’ ball security — it was good. Nebraska valued the ball and turned it over only six times with just one at halftime. Illinois, on the other hand, had a tough time against Nebraska’s defense and had 17 turnovers. Nebraska used those extra possessions to score 17 points.

Toughness, or more accurately a lack of it, was a key talking point during the losing streak. Hoiberg and the Huskers knew the rebounding battle would be important in this one. Illinois came into the game statistically as the best rebounding team in the country, averaging 45 boards per contest with a margin of plus-11.

On Thursday, Illinois won that battle on the glass 58-42 overall and 20-13 in offensive boards. Twenty-one offensive rebounds turned into 15 second-chance points. But the Huskers did work in the paint themselves, too, with 13 O-boards that turned into 12 second-chance points.

“I thought we kept playing. Some of the other ones, we’d give up an offensive rebound and then give up an open three,” Hoiberg said. “But we kept rotating and contesting and, again, made a couple big stops late and got the ball to the right guy. We wanted to get the ball into Brice’s hands, and thought he made a couple phenomenal plays.”

Nebraska’s first West Coast swing in the new 18-team Big Ten is what’s up next.

The Huskers will travel to No. 16 Oregon (16-4, 5-4) for a game on Sunday with a tip time of 6:30 p.m. central. The Ducks, who are 8-3 at home this season, were on the road at UCLA on Thursday night.

Hoiberg said the vibe in the locker room after the win was “businesslike.” And that’s how it should be. Just because the losing streak was snapped doesn’t mean a season turnaround is happening.

“The guys know that we have to get over it quickly,” Hoiberg said. “If we don’t, it’s gonna affect us at our game in Oregon, and it’s not gonna be pretty. You gotta let it go. We can’t have a hangover effect.”

After the game at Oregon, Nebraska will not fly home. Instead, they’ll stay on the coast and travel to Seattle, where they’ll play struggling Washington (10-10, 1-8) on Wednesday night with a tip time of 9:30 p.m. central. The Huskies are on a losing streak themselves — six in a row. They’ll try to snap it at Minnesota on Saturday.

In a stunning upset, the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ defense stepped up big time to lead the team to a thrilling victory over the No.18 ranked Illinois Fighting Illini. After a lackluster start to the season, the Huskers’ defense came alive in this game, shutting down the Illini’s high-powered offense and forcing key turnovers to secure the win.

The Huskers’ defense came out firing on all cylinders, putting relentless pressure on Illinois’ quarterback and stifling their running game. The defensive line dominated the line of scrimmage, while the secondary came up with crucial interceptions to swing the momentum in Nebraska’s favor.

Leading the charge was standout linebacker, who wreaked havoc all game long, racking up tackles and disrupting Illinois’ offensive rhythm. The entire defense played with a sense of urgency and determination, flying to the ball and making plays when it mattered most.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Huskers were able to capitalize on the turnovers forced by the defense, putting points on the board and taking control of the game. Quarterback showed poise and composure, making key throws and managing the game effectively.

Overall, it was a complete team effort that led to this impressive win over a ranked opponent. The defense set the tone from the opening kickoff and the offense followed suit, executing when it mattered most. This victory is a testament to the resilience and determination of this Nebraska team, and it serves as a statement win that will surely turn heads across the college football landscape. Go Big Red!

  • Quinnipiac triumphs in 77-74 win over Siena

HAMDEN — Quinnipiac women’s basketball played in one of its most down-the-wire matchups of the season against Siena Saturday afternoon, pulling off the 77-74 win, but not without heavy resistance.

“It was a pretty good game until the very end,” head coach Tricia Fabbri said. “Some mistakes that kept it a little interesting but I like what we were able to do today on both sides of the ball.”

Siena relied on scoring in the paint to put points on the board. And despite all players on the roster being listed as guards, the Saints’ physicality in the paint is what generated buckets.

While Siena operated on a post-centered offense, Quinnipiac focused more on spacing and finding open shots in the mid-range game, or beyond the arc.

In the first quarter, Siena used length in an attempt to stop freshman point guard Gal Raviv from scoring, often putting players six feet or taller on the ball-dominant guard. It worked, in the first quarter. Raviv finished the first half with 16 points, 14 coming in the second quarter and concluded the game with a career-high 32 points.

Raviv’s offensive explosion helped make the matchup a back-and-forth contest, with 16  lead changes in the first half.

One of the reasons the game was so tightly contested was the lack of second chance points from Siena as it was only able to grab two offensive rebounds.

“A big key was keeping them off the glass,” Fabbri said. “That’s not easy to do against a pretty ferocious and talented Siena team.”

Quinnipiac began to put together a lead during the final stages of the first half. With 52 seconds left, a layup by sophomore center Anna Foley put the team up by eight points.

But just as the Bobcats began to grab the lead, Siena pulled away any momentum Quinnipiac possessed on the final play. With under five seconds left on the clock, freshman guard Myriam Traore pulled up from Siena’s side of the court and swished a buzzer-beater to cut Quinnipiac’s lead to just four points.

As the third quarter progressed, it seemed like the back-and-forth nature of the game would continue. But Siena committed two fouls against Foley, putting her at the line to knock down four free throws to bring the Bobcats lead up to eight points.

The duel between Raviv and Siena graduate student guard Anhiysha Jackson lasted all game and well into the fourth quarter. The two guards combined for 54 points with each team’s offense flowing through them. Raviv 32 points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out eight assists.

“I’m just trying to read the defense and take what they’re giving me,” Raviv said.

When asked what Siena was throwing Raviv’s way defensively, Foley chimed in.

    “Everything.”

As the Bobcats head into the second half of the season, they’ll need everything at their disposal as the race for first in the MAAC begins to tighten.

Quinnipiac will travel to Buffalo, New York Jan. 30 to take on Canisius. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

In an exciting match-up, Quinnipiac emerged victorious with a 77-74 win over Siena. The game was a nail-biter from start to finish, with both teams displaying impressive skill and determination.

Quinnipiac’s offense was firing on all cylinders, with standout performances from key players leading the charge. The team’s defense also stepped up when it mattered most, making crucial stops and forcing turnovers to secure the win.

Siena put up a tough fight, but ultimately fell just short in their quest for victory. Despite the loss, the team showed resilience and fought until the final buzzer, making for an intense and thrilling game for fans on both sides.

Overall, it was a hard-fought battle between two talented teams, but in the end, Quinnipiac came out on top with a well-deserved 77-74 win. Congratulations to the Bobcats on their impressive performance!
