It began with the spark of a candle in 1941 related to the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons. Wait, a comic book genre?! No one was certain what to think about pages coming to life. The comic book genre has been under siege during “Awards Season” since 1978 when Christopher Reeve made the world believe a man could fly.

Recently, a different Bat signal had been emblazoned across Hollywood’s sky, and it is solid gold. Can we stop hating on this genre now?

It probably won’t happen as long as people like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Roland Emmerich, and David Cronenberg are helming Hollywood. They’re so influential and vociferous against the comic book genre that it tends to make the award bureaus reconsider a person acting in spandex really isn’t “acting.” As if cosplay doesn’t involve imagination.

And so, hate continues against any visual entertainment from comic books and graphic novels.



Colin Farrell’s Golden Globe win for his role in “The North Water” should finally put an end to the criticism of actors who take on roles in comic book movies.

For years, there has been a stigma surrounding actors who star in comic book adaptations, with many dismissing these films as mindless entertainment. However, Farrell’s win proves that actors who take on roles in these films are just as talented and deserving of recognition as those who star in more traditional, award-winning projects.

Farrell’s performance in “The North Water” was praised for its depth, complexity, and emotional range, proving that he is a versatile actor capable of delivering top-notch performances in a variety of genres. This win should serve as a reminder that actors should not be judged based on the type of projects they choose to work on, but rather on the quality of their work.

The Lowdown
This has been a strong year for albums as albums, and not just as collections of songs designed to support a single or two: Both Beyoncé and Taylor Swift lived up to that ideal. They’re hardly the only ones, though. Few artists epitomize that like Chappell Roan, whose debut full-length, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, has been a bottomless gold mine of vibrant, deeply felt pop. “‘Good Luck, Babe!’ was the song that finally propelled her,” says Spotify’s Talia Kraines, senior editor of pop, “but it’s been truly fascinating to watch everybody really dig into her catalog — nearly the entire album is in the Spotify Top 200.” 

Elsewhere, Billie Eilish’s sharply drawn, yet tenderly felt Hit Me Hard and Soft, says Kraines, “was really her being a twentysomething instead of a teenager — it was incredibly relatable despite her being one of the most famous people in the world.” Charli XCX’s Brat introduced her as a solo artist to a whole new audience while staying true to her future-pop ideals. “We’ve always known she had it in her,” says Kraines. But don’t overlook the unbridled artistry of André 3000’s flute adventure New Blue Sun, just the kind of eclectic release Grammy voters often like to reward.

Who Should Win
Beyoncé – Cowboy Carter
Beyoncé is the winningest artist in Grammy Awards history — but somehow has never won Album of the Year. Cowboy Carter could fix that: It’s an important history lesson about Black contributions to American music, as well as an introduction to the next generation of Black country music. “Uplifting other Black female country artists, and creating important conversations that needed to happen, is so important,” says Kraines. That the album is stuffed with indelible tracks like the slick “Bodyguard,” and the sweetly supportive Miley Cyrus duet “II Most Wanted” makes it a contender, too. “The two things stand side by side: the cultural piece and the excellent album,” she says. 

Who Will Win
Taylor Swift – The Tortured Poets Department
Can anyone stop Swift’s momentum, especially since she announced The Tortured Poets Department at the 2024 Grammy Awards? “Obviously, the impact of the Eras Tour is hard to ignore, and obviously The Tortured Poets Department has been huge,” Kraines says. “Her whole catalog still continues to stream like crazy, and when she added the new album’s section [to her show], that gave it another boost.” TTPD was produced by Jack Antonoff, who’s currently on a three-year winning streak for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, and that should help Swift’s case — as well as the hysteria she created on her Eras Tour, which wrapped in December.

The 2025 Grammy Awards are on Sunday, and the nominations capture a pop music universe perhaps experiencing metamorphosis.

Beyoncé has the most nods, 11 — no surprise there, as she is the most awarded artist in Grammys history. Charli XCX and Post Malone have eight nominations each; Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar have seven; Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift each have six.

That is a mix of Grammy favorites and young upstarts, which means this year’s ceremony might end up as a changing of the guard, or an implicit rebuke of inevitable change.

Tottenham overcame yet another injury setback to reach the last 16 of the Europa League as their new generation shone in a win over Elfsborg.

Spurs, who were already without 12 players because of injury and ineligibility, lost substitute defender Radu Dragusin when he went down hurt in the second half with the game goalless.

But substitute Dane Scarlett, 20, lifted the mood by heading the home side into a 70th-minute lead before 19-year-old fellow substitute Damola Ajayi made it 2-0.

Seventeen-year-old winger Mikey Moore sealed victory with his first goal for the club in the fourth minute of stoppage time, a wonderful low finish after a powerful run.

Spurs had struggled to find a way through the Swedish team’s stubborn defence in the first half.

Moore went closest before half-time after clever play by Son Heung-min, but Isak Pettersson produced a reflex save to frustrate the home side.

Elfsborg – playing their 16th game in the competition after starting in the first qualifying round – went close themselves through Jalal Abdullai in the second half before Scarlett set Spurs on their way.

Spurs finish the league phase in fourth place with 17 points and can now concentrate on domestic matters until the last-16 stage in March after avoiding a play-off tie in February.

Ange Postecoglou’s side will face one of Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar or Midtjylland next in the competition.
