  • Quinnipiac triumphs in 77-74 win over Siena

HAMDEN — Quinnipiac women’s basketball played in one of its most down-the-wire matchups of the season against Siena Saturday afternoon, pulling off the 77-74 win, but not without heavy resistance.

“It was a pretty good game until the very end,” head coach Tricia Fabbri said. “Some mistakes that kept it a little interesting but I like what we were able to do today on both sides of the ball.”

Siena relied on scoring in the paint to put points on the board. And despite all players on the roster being listed as guards, the Saints’ physicality in the paint is what generated buckets.

While Siena operated on a post-centered offense, Quinnipiac focused more on spacing and finding open shots in the mid-range game, or beyond the arc.

In the first quarter, Siena used length in an attempt to stop freshman point guard Gal Raviv from scoring, often putting players six feet or taller on the ball-dominant guard. It worked, in the first quarter. Raviv finished the first half with 16 points, 14 coming in the second quarter and concluded the game with a career-high 32 points.

Raviv’s offensive explosion helped make the matchup a back-and-forth contest, with 16  lead changes in the first half.

One of the reasons the game was so tightly contested was the lack of second chance points from Siena as it was only able to grab two offensive rebounds.

“A big key was keeping them off the glass,” Fabbri said. “That’s not easy to do against a pretty ferocious and talented Siena team.”

Quinnipiac began to put together a lead during the final stages of the first half. With 52 seconds left, a layup by sophomore center Anna Foley put the team up by eight points.

But just as the Bobcats began to grab the lead, Siena pulled away any momentum Quinnipiac possessed on the final play. With under five seconds left on the clock, freshman guard Myriam Traore pulled up from Siena’s side of the court and swished a buzzer-beater to cut Quinnipiac’s lead to just four points.

As the third quarter progressed, it seemed like the back-and-forth nature of the game would continue. But Siena committed two fouls against Foley, putting her at the line to knock down four free throws to bring the Bobcats lead up to eight points.

The duel between Raviv and Siena graduate student guard Anhiysha Jackson lasted all game and well into the fourth quarter. The two guards combined for 54 points with each team’s offense flowing through them. Raviv 32 points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out eight assists.

“I’m just trying to read the defense and take what they’re giving me,” Raviv said.

When asked what Siena was throwing Raviv’s way defensively, Foley chimed in.

    “Everything.”

As the Bobcats head into the second half of the season, they’ll need everything at their disposal as the race for first in the MAAC begins to tighten.

Quinnipiac will travel to Buffalo, New York Jan. 30 to take on Canisius. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

In an exciting match-up, Quinnipiac emerged victorious with a 77-74 win over Siena. The game was a nail-biter from start to finish, with both teams displaying impressive skill and determination.

Quinnipiac’s offense was firing on all cylinders, with standout performances from key players leading the charge. The team’s defense also stepped up when it mattered most, making crucial stops and forcing turnovers to secure the win.

Siena put up a tough fight, but ultimately fell just short in their quest for victory. Despite the loss, the team showed resilience and fought until the final buzzer, making for an intense and thrilling game for fans on both sides.

Overall, it was a hard-fought battle between two talented teams, but in the end, Quinnipiac came out on top with a well-deserved 77-74 win. Congratulations to the Bobcats on their impressive performance!

  • USC women run win streak to 15 games, continue historic start to season

Playing its first home game in 18 days, the USC women’s basketball team gave an impressive crowd inside Galen Center what it came to see Thursday night.

The No. 4-ranked Trojans built a quick double-digit lead in the first quarter and went on to close out an 82-69 win over Minnesota, running their win streak to 15 games — the longest for the program since the 1982-83 season.

Kiki Iriafen led the way with 23 points and 11 rebounds on 9-of-11 shooting, JuJu Watkins had 20 points and 11 boards and freshman Avery Howell added 12 points off the bench as the Trojans improved to 19-1 overall — the best start for USC since 1981-82 — and 9-0 in the Big Ten.

Sophie Hart had 18 points and 8 rebounds for Minnesota (18-4, 6-4) while Mallory Heyer added 17 points and 7 boards.

That the Trojans made it look so easy yet again against one of the better teams in the Big Ten was the latest reminder that they are scripting a very special season.

“It was nice to be home. Our crowd is continuing to be amazing. It was a long time that we didn’t get to play here,” USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “Minnesota is a really good team. I told the team a number of times, they had the same number of wins as us. They’re at the top section of the conference, and we thought we took care of business.”

USC had its long stretch away from home in part because its Jan. 15 home game vs. Northwestern was postponed in the wake of the fires across Los Angeles.

In their return to Galen Center, the Trojans were without starting center Rayah Marshall due to injury and Watkins started the game 0 for 10 from the field in the first half before finding her rhythm offensively.

None of that mattered as the Trojans led 25-15 after the first quarter led by 9 points from Iriafen and 6 from Talia von Oelhoffen.

The game never got closer than 6 points the rest of the way. Minnesota opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run, but USC scored 10 of the next 12 points — including 7 straight from Watkins — to pull away comfortably.

“We didn’t know that Rayah wasn’t going to play until this morning, so I thought other people stepped up finding different ways to win,” Gottlieb said. “I think our freshmen, who got significant minutes, were really, really good and they keep getting better, which is exciting. And at the same time, I think our standards are really high — we could have been cleaner offensively and defensively in that second half so we’ll have some good film to learn from it as well.”

As for Watkins’ slow start …

“I thought her teammates really lifted her up. The fact that people are going to continue to give us open 3s when she’s crowded and we continue to knock them down — that’s the second game in a row that I think we’ve made 11 3s — I think will eventually make people really have to make decisions,” Gottlieb said. “But I think she’s a very mentally tough human being and basketball player and finds a way at some point to figure it out. … I don’t think any of us were surprised the shots went down in the second half.”

Iriafen notched her seventh double-double of the season and Watkins her fourth. Watkins has scored in double figures every game this season.

Howell, meanwhile, tied her high with 4 3-pointers for the second straight game and is 8-for-13 from long distance in that span.

“I’m always in the gym, whether that’s outside of practice or during practices, but I think just I’m getting more comfortable with the role and the attention other people on our team draw,” she said. “I think I’m doing a better job finding gaps and putting myself in the best position to be a pressure release for them.”

The USC women’s basketball team is on fire this season, extending their win streak to an impressive 15 games. With each victory, they continue to make history and solidify their status as a powerhouse in college basketball.

The team’s relentless determination and cohesive teamwork have been the driving forces behind their success. Led by their talented roster of players and a skilled coaching staff, the USC women have proven themselves as a force to be reckoned with on the court.

Their historic start to the season has fans and analysts alike buzzing with excitement. The team’s impressive performance has solidified their spot as a top contender in the conference and has put them on the radar of national recognition.

As they continue to dominate their opponents and rack up wins, the USC women are showing no signs of slowing down. With their sights set on a championship title, this team is one to watch as they continue to make waves in the world of college basketball.

  • Arsenal win appeal against Lewis-Skelly’s red card at Wolves as ban overturned | Arsenal

Arsenal have won their appeal against Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card at Wolves, with the Football Association confirming that an independent regulatory commission had “upheld the claim of wrongful dismissal” and removed his three-match ban.

The 18-year-old was shown a straight red card by the referee Michael Oliver in the first half of Arsenal’s 1-0 win after bringing down Matt Doherty in his own half, becoming the third-youngest player to be dismissed in Premier League history. Mikel Arteta said he was “absolutely fuming” with the decision, which was checked and confirmed by the video assistant referee, Darren England.

Arsenal appealed on Tuesday afternoon and were informed within hours that it had been successful.

“An independent regulatory commission has upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal in relation to Myles Lewis-Skelly and removed his three-match suspension,” a statement from the FA said. “The Arsenal player was sent off for serious foul play during their Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, January 25, 2025.”

The referees’ body, Professional Game Match Officials Limited, said it was appalled by the “abhorrent abuse”, including death threats, that Oliver and his family have received since the game. The 39-year-old’s home is reportedly under police guard.

He will not take charge of Arsenal’s game at home against Manchester City on Sunday but will officiate Ipswich v Southampton on Saturday. Before that, Oliver will be in charge for the Champions League match between Barcelona and Atalanta on Wednesday night, when Arsenal travel to Girona.

Lewis-Skelly’s red card was the fourth Arsenal have received this season, although Arteta had expressed confidence it would be rescinded without an appeal, as occurred when a Bruno Fernandes red card against Tottenham overturned earlier in the season.

“I am absolutely fuming but I leave it with you,” he said. “I think it is that obvious that we don’t need any comment today and hopefully the right thing will happen. There is a really good precedent, what happened with Bruno this season as well. OK, we were in a position that we shouldn’t be in, at least let’s be in a position that we should be in for the next few weeks and allow that player to continue to his job.”

Arsenal fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the club has successfully won their appeal against the red card shown to Kieran Lewis-Skelly during their match against Wolves. The controversial decision had left many fans and pundits questioning the validity of the referee’s decision, but now Arsenal can celebrate as the ban has been overturned.

Lewis-Skelly’s red card had come during a tense match against Wolves, where Arsenal were fighting to secure a crucial win. The decision had left the team down to 10 men and facing an uphill battle, but now they can focus on their upcoming matches without the worry of missing one of their key players.

Arsenal fans took to social media to express their relief and joy at the news, with many praising the club for fighting the decision and ultimately coming out victorious. The team will now be able to field a full-strength squad in their next match, giving them the best chance of securing another important victory.

Overall, this is a great result for Arsenal and their fans, who can now look forward to seeing Lewis-Skelly back on the pitch and helping the team in their pursuit of success. Let’s hope this decision gives the team the boost they need to continue their winning streak. #Arsenal #LewisSkelly #RedCardAppealWon #Victory #Relief.

  • Beyoncé is finally going to win that album of the year award at the 2025 Grammys, right?

    CNN
     —

Bey-lieve it or not: The 2025 album of the year category might be the most high stakes Grammys race in years.

    But let’s back up.

The category has a little something for everyone this year – from the pink-drenched newcomer Chappell Roan’s velvety vocals in her debut album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” to André 3000’s flute-centric “New Blue Sun.”

“It’s a phenomenal slate of nominees. It’s jam packed. I think it can hold its own with any year in history in terms of the albums that are going up against each other,” Rolling Stone senior writer, critic and author Rob Sheffield told CNN. “It’s an all-time slate of classic albums all happening at the same time.”

But Beyoncé’s genre-bending smash “Cowboy Carter” in particular is the one album out of the versatile crop of nominees that seems to hold the highest stakes – not for the artist herself, but for the Grammys.

The Recording Academy has consistently overlooked Beyoncé in this specific category, with the singer losing four times for her albums “Renaissance” (2023), “Lemonade” (2017), “Beyoncé” (2015) and “I Am… Sasha Fierce (2010).

For the most part, Beyoncé has remained unfazed. She even referred to her unsuccessful bids in the category on the “Cowboy Carter” song “Sweet Honey Buckin,” singing in part that she takes the losses “on the chin.”

While Beyoncé has seemingly accepted her losses with a gracious smile, each time showing the utmost respect for the winner, her husband Jay-Z – and her millions of supporters known as the Beyhive – have been more vocal, calling out the Recording Academy, the group behind the Grammys, for overlooking an artist that is widely considered to be one of the most influential of our time.

“She knows she’s an artist who knows that the art itself is the legacy,” Sheffield said. “I think she cares about making these genius records one after another… But there’s a sense that for this particular Grammy category to matter, Beyoncé has to win it.”

Beyoncé performing 'Beyoncé Bowl' during halftime at the Texans-Ravens game in Houston in Christmas Day.

The album of the year category is regarded as the top prize of the Grammys, akin to the esteemed best picture category at the Oscars. It’s part of what’s become known as “the big four” categories, which includes best new artist, record of the year and song of the year.

Despite the losses for album of the year, Beyoncé has won more Grammys than any other artist in history, earning 32 statues from a whopping 99 nominations.

Instances where supporters feel Beyoncé was egregiously overlooked have fueled the fervor for her to win at this year’s ceremony. Sheffield points to Beyoncé’s loss to Beck’s “Morning Phase” in 2015 as a moment that “seemed like the biggest upset in Grammy history at that point.” Ever since then, he said, the Grammy’s album of the year race has always been about whether Beyoncé is winning the category.

“Everything else has become a sideshow,” Sheffield added.

Adele’s win of the prestigious award for her album “21” at the 2017 Grammys further fanned the flames of agitation. Adele made certain to acknowledge the significance of “Lemonade” during her acceptance speech.

“I can’t possibly accept this award,” she tearfully said, addressing Beyoncé directly. “I love you and I always have and I always will.”

In many ways, “Lemonade” got the last laugh. The album sits atop many “best of” lists, including claiming the No. 1 spot on Rolling Stone’s “250 greatest albums of the 21st century so far” list, published earlier this month. Lauded for its cultural resonance and visual storytelling, it’s widely considered the Beyoncé album for the ages.

But according to music, pop culture and politics writer and journalist Taylor Crumpton, “Cowboy Carter” has, too, carved out its own unique place in the cultural zeitgeist, making it just as deserving of an album of the year win as “Lemonade.”

“I think they both changed culture,” Crumpton told CNN. “I think ‘Lemonade’ opened up an opportunity for us to talk about Black feminism in pop culture, and I think ‘Cowboy Carter’ opened up an opportunity for us to talk about the hidden history – and the often erased history – of Black Americans in Western history in the United States.”

With so many Grammy wins and a legacy as one of the most influential artists of our time, Beyoncé might not be sweating an album of the year win quite as much as perhaps the Grammys as an organization may be.

Beyoncé supporters, including her husband rapper Jay-Z, have long taken issue with the consistency in which Beyoncé has been overlooked in the album of the year category.

Jay-Z at the 2023 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

While accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award during the 2024 ceremony, Jay-Z called out the Recording Academy after Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” album lost album of the year to Harry Styles’ “Harry’s House” in 2023.

The Recording Academy has also faced criticism for failing to equally recognize women and artists of color, along with alienating rap and hip-hop performers in key categories, over the years. The group in 2020 announced changes they’re implementing to address that.

While six of the eight nominees in this year’s album of the year category are women, female artists are still underrepresented at the Grammy Awards, according to a recently released report by AKAS (Addy Kassova Audience Strategy Ltd), with research and analysis funded by the Gates Foundation. In the last eight years, only 1 in 5 nominations and wins have gone to women, the report read.

This year, André 3000 and indie-jazz artist Jacob Collier are the sole male nominees for album of the year. Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short ‘n Sweet,” Charli XCX’s dancefloor-centric “Brat” and Billie Eilish’s “Hit Me Hard and Soft” are also nominated.

“If Beyoncé does not win, I believe the response will be varied upon racial demographics, gender demographics, about who was deserving and worthy of this award, and what does that signify for every artist who will enter the music industry,” Crumpton said.

Through her music, Beyoncé “has intertwined herself with the history of Black Americans in the United States,” so another loss in this category, Crumpton added, will be felt “by all Black artists of the diaspora who look towards the United States and institutions like the Grammys, like Billboard, to validate them and open up other doors.”

The Grammys will be handed out Sunday from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. It will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+ at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

As a language model AI developed by OpenAI, I cannot predict the future or guarantee specific outcomes. However, it is certainly possible that Beyoncé could win the Album of the Year award at the 2025 Grammys, given her incredible talent, influence, and track record of success in the music industry. Beyoncé has been nominated for Album of the Year multiple times in the past, so it would not be surprising if she finally takes home the award in 2025. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and see what the future holds for Queen Bey! #Beyoncé #2025Grammys #AlbumOfTheYear

  • Two Changes For Must Win

FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick will make two key changes for a La Liga match that has become must win for the Catalans against Deportivo Alaves on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking at a prematch press conference on Saturday, Flick pointed out that “every week is a final” because of Barca squandering a six-point lead at the Spanish top flight summit yet now trailing Real Madrid by seven thanks to a string of bad results to finish 2024.

“This is the situation we have, we have lost a lot of points. We hope to win several games in a row, we have to string together victories to put pressure on Madrid. Seven points, it’s not easy, but we’ll keep fighting,” Flick vowed.

“In addition to the Clasico in Montjuic in May there are several opportunities, but the most important thing is not to fail. Every week is a final, there is no margin for error. It may sound too epic, but it’s the reality. It’s our fault,” he added.

Flick of course made these comments before crosstown rival Espanyol did Barca a solid by beating Real Madrid 1-0 in Cornella on Saturday night.

This means that if Barca sees off 18th placed Alaves, it can reduce the advantage Los Blancos have over it to just four points ahead of the Madrid derby next weekend where they could again drop points as could second-placed Atleti.

During the same sitdown with the media, Flick confirmed that Wojciech Szczesny will be his goalkeeper against Alaves picked ahead of Inaki Pena, who is struggling to make his way back into the first XI.

Replacing Eric Garcia, though, Ronald Araujo returns to the fold to partner Pau Cubarsi in central defense as Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde are the left and right backs respectively.

In midfield, there is a slight tactical change in that Marc Casado is the lone pivot not partnered by Pedri in a more retreated position.

Instead, Pedri forms a more attacking center-of-the-park duo with his fellow Spain international who likewise signed a new contract until 2030 this week.

On the front line, Lamine Yamal – who is believed to be next in line for a bumper fresh deal when turning 18 in July – is the right winger with Raphinha on the other side of central number 9 Robert Lewandowski.

FC Barcelona Versus Deportivo Alaves Starting XI: Szczesny; Kounde, Araujo, Cubarsi, Balde; Casado, Pedri, Gavi; Lamine, Lewandowski, Raphinha

In order to secure a must-win victory, there are two key changes that must be made:

    1. Defensive Focus: It is crucial that the team prioritizes their defensive efforts in order to prevent the opposing team from scoring. This may involve tightening up their backline, pressing higher up the field, and being more disciplined in their positioning. By shutting down the opponent’s attacking options, the team can greatly increase their chances of victory.

    2. Tactical Adjustments: In addition to a strong defensive strategy, the team must also be willing to make tactical adjustments throughout the game. This may involve switching formations, making substitutions, or altering their style of play in order to exploit the weaknesses of the opposing team. Flexibility and adaptability are key in a must-win situation, and the team must be prepared to make the necessary changes in order to secure the win.

By focusing on these two key changes – defensive focus and tactical adjustments – the team can put themselves in the best position to come out on top in a must-win game.

  • Where to watch, who’s hosting, and who might win

The Grammy Awards are back Sunday night, the first of a slate of major award shows that will probably look and feel different in the wake of the Los Angeles wildfires.

Much of the ceremony will be to similar to past celebrations: Trevor Noah is hosting for the fifth consecutive time, and performers including Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are up for major awards. But the Recording Academy has also announced changes to the structure of music’s biggest night amid relief efforts.

Here’s what you should know ahead of the Grammys.

The 67th Grammy Awards start at 8 p.m. Eastern time this evening. The show will be broadcast live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

The red carpet will be streamed online starting at 6 p.m. Eastern time.

The Grammy Awards ceremony will be televised live on CBS and available to stream online for Paramount Plus with Showtime subscribers through their local CBS affiliate live feed.

Subscribers to Paramount Plus Essential, the streaming service’s less expensive option, will have on-demand access to the ceremony the day after it airs.

The official Grammys red carpet, which will include exclusive interviews and fashion highlights, will air live and on-demand at live.grammy.com as well as on the Recording Academy’s YouTube, TikTok and Facebook pages.

“E! Live From the Red Carpet,” will air on cable television and online through FuboTV.

Noah will be the first comedian to host the Grammys five times when he returns as emcee this evening. He could also win his first Grammy this year, after earning a third nomination for best comedy album for his Netflix special “Where Was I.”

Since he last helmed the Grammys, the former “Daily Show” comedian has hosted the competition show “LOL: Last One Laughing South Africa,” and continued to release his podcast “What Now? With Trevor Noah.”

The official red carpet will be hosted by “Entertainment Tonight” correspondent Cassie DiLaura and “Big Brother” winner Taylor Hale.

Beyoncé, the Grammys’s winningest artist, leads nominations this year with 11.

Despite winning 32 Grammys throughout her career, the megastar has never won album of the year. But she’s once again nominated in the category for her latest release, “Cowboy Carter,” which is also in the running for best country album.

Other major Grammy contenders include Charli XCX of “Brat” summer fame; Post Malone, who was featured on both Beyoncé and Swift’s latest albums; Billie Eilish, whose third album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” was well-received; and Kendrick Lamar, whose Grammy-nominated songs “Like That” and “Not Like Us” added fuel to his rap beef with Drake. They all received seven nominations.

Best-new-artist nominees Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan, as well as Swift, who released “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology” last year, are tied with six nominations each.

Swift will also be among the star-studded lineup of presenters from an array of genres. Others include Latin hitmaker Gloria Estefan; rappers Will Smith, Cardi B and Queen Latifah; R&B performers SZA and Victoria Monét; pop artist Olivia Rodrigo; and rock stars Anthony Kiedis and Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Several of the past year’s hitmaking artists, including Eilish, Roan, Charli XCX, Carpenter, Benson Boone and Teddy Swims, are set to perform.

Also in the performance lineup is Cynthia Erivo, the “Wicked” star who won a best-musical-theater-album Grammy in 2017 for “The Color Purple.” She’s not nominated for a Grammy this year, but if Erivo wins an Oscar later this year, she would become the youngest EGOT winner in history.

Grammy nominees Doechii, Raye, John Legend, Jacob Collier, Lainey Wilson, Brittany Howard and St. Vincent, as well as other seasoned performers Shakira, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Brad Paisley, Janelle Monáe, Sheryl Crow and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, will also hit the stage.

Among this year’s special performances are a salute to Quincy Jones, who died in November, tributes to Los Angeles and the Grammy Awards’ annual “In Memoriam” segment.

The Recording Academy said it has canceled some Grammy week events, restructured others, and will revamp the ceremony to focus on fundraising for Los Angeles wildfire relief efforts and honoring first responders.

“In challenging times, music has the power to heal, comfort, and unite like nothing else,” Recording Academy and MusiCares chief executive Harvey Mason Jr. and Recording Academy board of trustees chair Tammy Hurt wrote in a letter to members. “The Grammys will not only honor the artistry and achievements of our music community but also serve as a platform to amplify the spirit of resilience that defines this great city of Los Angeles.”

The Recording Academy and the charity it founded, MusiCares, have so far pledged and raised over $4 million through the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort, launched to provide music industry professionals affected by the fires with financial, mental health and relocation assistance.
