  • Why Roman Reigns Needs To Win The 2025 WWE Royal Rumble

CM Punk, John Cena, and now Roman Reigns. The Big Dog and The Tribal Chief is back in the Royal Rumble and his presence alone makes him a favorite to walk away from the match a winner.

All week long, we’ve made arguments as to who should win the Royal Rumble this year and the argument for Reigns is the easiest. Like the other stars we’ve discussed, Reigns has many storylines that need a Rumble win to progress. Plus, he’s the biggest star in WWE and that has to count for something.

MORE: Why CM Punk Needs To Win The 2025 WWE Royal Rumble

This is a new series on The Takedown on SI that analyzes potential winners of the big match this year. Let’s look now at Roman Reigns.

Thanks to a definitive win over Solo Sikoa on the first-ever episode of WWE Raw on Netflix, Roman Reigns is once again the Tribal Chief in WWE. Now that the Ula Fala is around his neck again, he’s turned his attention directly to regaining the WWE Championship and has said winning the Royal Rumble is the way he’ll earn his opportunity at the championship at WrestleMania.

Throughout the years when Roman Reigns has called his shot, he hasn’t missed. Sure, he’s missed here and there, but generally speaking, he’s been a character who has regularly made good on whatever he sets his mind to.

With that in mind, winning the Royal Rumble means the most for him. He’s put his credibility on the line and given that he just vanquished the evil Solo Sikoa, it’s smart to keep his momentum moving forward, which means Reigns should make good on the promises he puts out there.

That’s the storyline reason for Reigns to win.

The business reason is much simpler, but also more compelling. It’s Roman Reigns. Reigns is the biggest star that WWE has access to on a semi-regular basis not named The Rock, so you know he’s going to occupy one of the WrestleMania main events when the craziness rolls into Las Vegas in mid-April. A Reigns Royal Rumble victory is the cleanest way to get him into that slot.

Reigns as the Royal Rumble winner also gives WWE the most intriguing possibilities for potential match-ups. If Reigns wins the Rumble, he’s guaranteed a title shot at WrestleMania — I’m not breaking any news there. That means we could get Reigns vs. Cody 3, Reigns vs. Gunther for the first time, Reigns vs. CM Punk if somehow Punk becomes WWE World Heavyweight Champion between the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania, or Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu — maybe Fatu shocks the world and defeats Cody to win the championship?

Some of those options are long shots, but they’re possible with Reigns as the Rumble winner. Also, with Reigns as your Rumble winner, you eliminate issues that other potential winners bring to the table.

MORE: 4 Facts About Roman Reigns’ Impressive WWE Royal Rumble Resume

Take John Cena, for example. He famously admitted that he hadn’t won a singles match in over 2,000 days. And yet he’ll stroll into the Royal Rumble and pull off a massive win? It seems a bit far-fetched.

Same thing with CM Punk. With all of the inner-match feuds that Punk has going on next to him in the Rumble match — Drew, Seth, Reigns, Cena — he’s going to overcome all of those obstacles at once? Super Punk? Ehh. Not sure about that one.

Finally, Reigns hasn’t been in or won the Royal Rumble in years. When he did win it, it was a mess of epic proportions. WWE gets a chance to rewrite that narrative here. They can do the Roman Reigns Royal Rumble victory right and fire the 2015 match into the sun for good.

It’s 2025. Reigns is as popular as ever. Let the big dog eat.

There are several reasons why Roman Reigns needs to win the 2025 WWE Royal Rumble.

First and foremost, Reigns is one of the top superstars in the WWE and has a massive fan following. He has proven time and time again that he is a dominant force in the ring and is capable of taking on any opponent. Winning the Royal Rumble would solidify his status as a top contender for the WWE Championship and showcase his dominance in the ring.

Additionally, Reigns has been on a hot streak in recent years, with multiple championship reigns and impressive victories over some of the biggest names in the WWE. Winning the Royal Rumble would be the perfect way to continue his momentum and set him up for a high-profile match at WrestleMania.

Furthermore, Reigns has a compelling storyline with his ongoing rivalry with other top stars in the WWE. Winning the Royal Rumble would not only give him an opportunity to settle scores with his rivals but also create new and exciting matchups for fans to look forward to.

Overall, Roman Reigns winning the 2025 WWE Royal Rumble would be a fitting and deserving victory for one of the top stars in the company. It would further establish his dominance in the WWE and set the stage for an epic showdown at WrestleMania.

  • Eagles invite survivor of Bourbon Street attack back to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX: ‘Not letting evil win’

Former Princeton football player Ryan Quigley was seriously injured and lost his best friend and fellow teammate, Tiger Bech, in the violent terrorist attack in New Orleans on January 1. But Quigley will have the opportunity to write that tragic story when he returns next weekend as an honorary guest of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles invited Quigley and Bech’s sister to attend their divisional round game against the Los Angeles Rams last month, but this week they invited him to their training facility with the intention of surprising him with Super Bowl LIX tickets.

“We want to tell you the real reason we brought you here,” Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham said in a video shared by the team. “It’s okay if you’re not feeling it, but we would love to have you down for the Super Bowl.”

This year’s Super Bowl will be hosted by the city of New Orleans. It will take place just a little over a month after the attack. Quigley will return to the city, something he vowed never to do again.

“New Year’s Eve was my first time in New Orleans ever, it was my first night, and I told myself it was going to be the last,” he told the team’s website. “But then I thought about it, because all year I’ve been telling Tiger if the Eagles make the Super Bowl this year, I promised him I was going to take him, and he’s from Louisiana.”

“I think, not letting evil win and evil will not prevail. I think we’re going to go back to New Orleans and leave on a positive note from that city, given that Tiger’s from there and that I promised him I was going bring him down to the Super Bowl. I’m looking forward to it for sure.”

Quigley, 26, suffered broken bones in his leg, back and face and underwent surgery and several days in the hospital to recover from a horrific terror attack on Bourbon Street that killed 14 people and injured dozens more.

He hopes that his presence will allow him to share Bech’s story, something he plans to continue doing no, matter where he goes.

“Everything that the Eagles have done from being around the facilities today and the Divisional Round, to helping us share his story, there’s no words to describe it. We’re forever grateful to have the opportunity to tell the rest of the world how special Tiger was.”

The Philadelphia Eagles have extended a heartwarming invitation to one of the survivors of the tragic Bourbon Street shooting in New Orleans to attend Super Bowl LIX with them. The survivor, who wishes to remain anonymous, was caught in the crossfire during the senseless act of violence that took place in the iconic French Quarter.

The Eagles organization reached out to the survivor, expressing their desire to show support and solidarity during this difficult time. The survivor, who is a die-hard Eagles fan, was overwhelmed with gratitude for the invitation and eagerly accepted.

In a statement released by the Eagles, they expressed their commitment to standing with the survivor and not letting evil win. They emphasized the importance of coming together as a community to support those affected by such tragedies and to spread love and positivity in the face of darkness.

The survivor’s trip to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX will serve as a symbol of resilience and hope, showing that even in the midst of tragedy, there is still light and goodness to be found. The Eagles organization hopes that this gesture will bring some comfort and healing to the survivor as they continue to recover from the traumatic experience.

As the survivor prepares to join the Eagles in New Orleans for the big game, the entire team and fanbase stand in solidarity with them, sending thoughts of strength and support. Together, they will show that love and unity will always triumph over hate and violence. #NotLettingEvilWin #FlyEaglesFly

AMES, Iowa — Dug McDaniel scored 20 points as Kansas State upset No. 3 Iowa State 80-61 on Saturday, ending the Cyclones’ 29-game home winning streak.

The Wildcats (10-11, 4-6 Big 12) ended a 15-game road losing streak — 12 of which occurred within the Big 12. Kansas State’s 19-point road win is tied for the largest by an unranked team against a top 3 opponent in AP Poll history, according to ESPN Research.

The win is also Kansas State’s largest against an AP top 5 team since 1951 and the Wildcats’ largest road win against an AP top 5 team in poll history.

Kansas State has won its past three games, also beating then-No. 23 West Virginia and Oklahoma State.

Coleman Hawkins added 17 points and Brendan Hausen had 15 for the Wildcats.

The Cyclones’ 29-game home winning streak was the second longest in the nation, behind Houston’s 33.

Tamin Lipsey tied a season high with 20 points for the Cyclones (17-4, 7-3). Curtis Jones added 14 and Joshua Jefferson chipped in 13.

    Takeaways

Kansas State: The Wildcats took down their first top 5 team on the road since 2017 when Kansas State beat then-No. 2 Baylor 56-54 at the Ferrell Center on Feb. 2.

Iowa State: The Cyclones tied a season high with 18 turnovers, the second straight game they’ve finished with that many turnovers. They lost both games.

    Key moment

The Cyclones tried to claw back into the game with a 13-0 run late in the second half, but a 3-pointer from Hausen extinguished Iowa State’s hopes.

Key stat The Wildcats tied a season high of 22 fouls committed but still upset a top 3 team on the road.

In a stunning upset, Kansas State snaps No. 3 Iowa State’s 29-game home win streak

The Kansas State Wildcats pulled off a remarkable victory on Saturday, ending No. 3 Iowa State’s impressive 29-game home win streak. The Wildcats came into Hilton Coliseum as heavy underdogs but managed to outplay the Cyclones in a thrilling game that went down to the wire.

Kansas State’s defense was relentless, holding Iowa State’s high-powered offense in check and forcing key turnovers throughout the game. The Wildcats’ offense also came up big, with clutch plays and timely scoring to keep them in the lead.

Despite the hostile environment, Kansas State maintained their composure and executed their game plan to perfection. The win not only ends Iowa State’s impressive home win streak but also marks a significant victory for the Wildcats in conference play.

The Wildcats’ victory serves as a reminder that anything can happen in college basketball, and no team is invincible. Congratulations to Kansas State on their impressive win, and commiserations to Iowa State on the end of their impressive home win streak.

  • CRAWFORD | A closer look: 4 key stats in Louisville’s 10-game win streak | U of L Sports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — For Pat Kelsey and Louisville, there’s no looking back. Reporters could be forgiven if they struggled to come up with questions for a coach whose team has faced little resistance in reeling off 10 straight wins by an average of 13 points per game.

Beginning against Georgia Tech on Saturday in Atlanta (3.45 p.m., The CW), Louisville begins a stretch of games against four opponents who are a combined 6-32 in ACC play and have won just one of their past 27 games.

After Georgia Tech, Boston College (six-game losing streak), Miami (10-game losing streak) and. N.C. State (five-game losing streak) don’t inspire much fear.

As politely as possible, Kelsey was asked what concerns he might have playing against opponents who are so, um, unaccomplished.

“We have a very tough opponent tomorrow at Georgia Tech, extremely dangerous,” Kelsey said. “And they play very well at home, and we know we have our work cut out for us. Our guys have been really locked in on the process of preparation for them. . . . I am concerned with one game. The next one. I don’t even know who we play after this. I never do. I may peek at the schedule, just to see what it looks like to help put my schedule together. But we could play the U.S. Olympic team in four days and I wouldn’t start preparing for them until after the buzzer sounds tomorrow night.”

The U.S. Olympic Team is not walking through that door.

Anyway, you get that picture. And it’s not an act. The only way to be successful is to keep focus on the task in front of you, whether it’s a game, a possession, a timeout, whatever.

Those of us on the sidelines, however, don’t have to do that so much. Sometimes, I think it’s instructive to back up a little bit and look at what has happened. And how it has happened, and why.

That’s why we’re going to turn to some statistics from CBBAnalytics.com to paint a picture of the Louisville basketball team over the past 10 games.

    Shot Selection

Louisville’s shot chart over the past 10 games doesn’t differ much from its shot chart for the whole season. It’s a picture of modern basketball. You’ll see a ton of shots from three-point range, and a ton of shots at the rim. You’ll see some shots in the lane.

    Louisville last 10 games

Louisville’s shot chart during its 10 game winning streak

And you can count on your hands and feet (20 shots in 10 games) that were mid-range jumpers outside the lane.

Louisville has not been a particularly good shooting team this season (though it has been better during the 10-game winning streak).

But what it has done particularly well is take the shots it wants to take. If it can get good volume from threes or at the rim, and get to the foul line, the offense is working.

“We hunt great,” Kelsey said of his team’s shot selection. “It’s not just about this three or that two, but about great looks.”

This is what a disciplined offense looks like in 2025. A shot chart filled with shots in the lane, and shots outside the three-point line, and not much in between.

By contrast, below is what Louisville’s shot chart looked like last season. The shots came from everywhere. Now, there’s more than one way to run an offense. But, in general, when you see a shot chart that has no shape, it generally belies an offense that has no shape — though occasionally it will be showing you an excellent offense that is difficult to scout, and defend.

    Louisville 2023-24 shot chart

A shot chart from the 2023-24 Louisville basketball season.

    Sit in the Corner

The corner three-pointer is Nirvana in modern college (and pro) basketball. It has a shorter length. Players like to shoot it. And they make it at a higher percentage than any other shot beyond the arc.

So corner threes are “great looks” Louisville will hunt at every opportunity. During its winning streak, Louisville has taken 14% of its shots from the corner beyond the arc. That percentage is in the highest three percent in the nation during that time.

The Cards are shooting 43% on corner threes during the streak. Khani Rooths is 60% on those shots, Reyne Smith is 56%, Terrence Edwards if 46.7%and Chucky Hepburn 41.7%.

If you’re looking for Louisville’s best shooters at the rim, James Scott has made 78.% of his shots from inside 4 ½ feet over the past 10 games, and Hepburn has made 70.6%.

    Sit in Timeout

Louisville has averaged 1.01 points per chance on possessions out of timeouts over the past 10 games, which ranks 21st in the nation. It seems hard to imagine 20 teams better out of timeouts than Louisville but that’s the stat. Over the past five games, Louisville’s 1.17 points per chance out of timeouts ranks third nationally.

(Note: That’s not a percentage of scores right out of timeouts. I don’t have the analytics service that provides that info.)

Regardless of rank, Louisville’s effectiveness out of timeouts has not gone unnoticed.

For the season as a whole, Louisville is averaging 1.04 nationally in points per chance out of timeouts, good for 31st nationally. And 59% of Louisville’s shots coming out of timeouts have been three-point attempts, good for second nationally.

How does this compare to recent years? Louisville ranked No. 153 in this category last season and No. 209 the season before.

    Looking at Lineups

Louisville’s most-used lineup has also been its best statistically. Which is nice. But it’s not always something you can take for granted at any level of basketball.

The lineup of Hepburn, Smith, Hadley, Edwards and Scott has had a plus-minus of plus-99 over the past 10 games. It has logged more than twice as many minutes as any other lineup.

But the interesting thing about Louisville’s team is that, during this 10-game streak, it has four other lineups that are plus-83 or higher. The lineup of Hepburn, Smith, Edwards, Hadley and Traore has been plus-93 — and that lineup has the highest overall rating of any other group. It also has the highest effective field-goal percentage.

The best defensive lineup, by rating, is a group that includes Hepburn, Smith, Edwards, Traore and Scott – a group that also leads Louisville in steal percentage, and blocked shot percentage. Lineups where Louisville uses Noah Waterman and Hadley, or Scott and Rooths, or Scott and Hadley together, fair a bit worse on defense.

No matter how you break it down, of course, Louisville is playing well. And rest assured, Louisville’s staff, which is meticulous about analytics, knows far more than this. But Kelsey downplays the streak.

“We’re just trying to be great at the next thing we do, that’s it,” he said. “I mean, that success that we’ve had in the past is over. Whether it’s at a past program or 10 wins in a row, it doesn’t guarantee we’re going to win tomorrow. If we’re not ready to play against Georgia Tech, we’re going to get our butt kicked.”

As the Louisville Cardinals continue their impressive 10-game win streak, let’s take a closer look at some key stats that have contributed to their success. From shooting percentages to defensive stops, here are 4 key stats that highlight the dominance of the Louisville men’s basketball team during their recent hot streak.

    1. Three-point shooting percentage: One of the standout stats during Louisville’s win streak has been their efficient three-point shooting. The Cardinals have been shooting over 40% from beyond the arc, giving them a significant edge over their opponents. Players like star guard David Johnson and sharpshooter Matt Cross have been lighting it up from deep, stretching the floor and creating scoring opportunities for their teammates.

    2. Turnover margin: Another key stat that has fueled Louisville’s success is their ability to take care of the basketball while forcing turnovers on defense. The Cardinals have been winning the turnover battle in nearly every game during their win streak, leading to extra possessions and easy scoring opportunities. Players like guard Carlik Jones and forward Jae’Lyn Withers have been instrumental in creating turnovers and converting them into points on the other end.

    3. Points in the paint: Louisville has been dominating the paint on both ends of the floor, outscoring their opponents in the key and limiting their opportunities inside. The Cardinals have been utilizing their size and athleticism to score easy buckets in the paint, while also protecting the rim and contesting shots on defense. Players like forward Malik Williams and center Roosevelt Wheeler have been instrumental in controlling the paint and creating mismatches against smaller opponents.

    4. Free throw percentage: In close games, free throw shooting can often be the difference between a win and a loss. Louisville has been excelling at the charity stripe during their win streak, making crucial free throws down the stretch to secure victories. Players like guard Dre Davis and forward Samuell Williamson have been reliable free throw shooters, knocking down key shots when the game is on the line.

As Louisville continues to roll through their schedule, these key stats will be crucial in maintaining their momentum and securing wins against tough competition. With a balanced attack on offense and stingy defense, the Cardinals are proving to be a force to be reckoned with in college basketball.

  • Atlético de Madrid keep the pressure on after win over Mallorca

    Scorers: Lino 26′, Griezmann 90+3′

Atlético de Madrid did their part as they kept pressure on bitter rivals Real Madrid at the top of the table after a 1-0 win against visiting Mallorca.

With Real Madrid due to kick off in just over 30 minutes, Atléti banked the full boatload of points to temporarily narrow the gap to the La Liga summit to just a single point thanks to a lone strike by Brazilian defender Samuel Lino.

It was Lino’s third goal of the season for Diego Simeone’s men, and it could not have come at a better time as Atléti laboured to truly see out the match against a solid Mallorca outfit who sits just outside the top-six.

Having failed to win on the domestic front in their previous two fixtures against Villarreal (1-1 draw) and Leganes (1-0 loss) while gifting Carlo Ancelotti’s men confidence in their quest for yet another La Liga win, Atléti’s biggest stars were left frustrated as they continued to misfire across 90 minutes.

Thankfully for Simeone, the stout nature of his ever-present defensive structure did well to shut out a Mallorca side who, despite sitting seventh, routinely struggle to find the back of the net this season.

But in the final moments, Antoine Griezmann put the match beyond doubt with the 198th La Liga goal of his La Liga career in the third minute of added time after chipping Dominik Greif from beyond 20 yards after the Slovakian keeper came off his line.

Up next for Atléti is a home tie against Getafa in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday before the Derbi Madrileño at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.

Atlético de Madrid keep the pressure on after win over Mallorca

Atlético de Madrid continued their impressive form with a 3-0 victory over Mallorca, keeping the pressure on their title rivals in La Liga.

Goals from Luis Suárez, João Félix, and Marcos Llorente sealed the win for Diego Simeone’s side, who now sit just two points behind league leaders Real Madrid.

With just a few games left in the season, Atlético de Madrid are showing no signs of slowing down as they push for their first league title since 2014. Will they be able to maintain their momentum and clinch the championship? Stay tuned to find out. #Atleti #LaLiga #Winners

  • Ole Miss outlasts Texas 72-69 as former Longhorns head coach Chris Beard gets the win over Rodney Terry’s team

Texas basketball head coach Rodney Terry preaches his team’s need to stay under 10 turnovers or less in order to put themselves in a favorable position to win games.

In a game that saw the Longhorns hold the edge in shooting percentage, rebounding and points in the paint, it ended up being Ole Miss’ ability to force the Longhorns into 11 turnovers that paved the way for Chris Beard‘s club to hang on to a 72-69 win over Texas on Wednesday evening.

Texas 14-7 (3-5 SEC) entered the contest riding consecutive wins and for the first 20 minutes of play, appeared put themselves in position to extend the win streak to three.

The Longhorns raced out to an 11-2 lead over the first five minutes of the game and led by as many as 13, behind a solid shooting effort and dominating Ole Miss 16-5 (5-3) on the boards – leading to second chance scoring opportunities.

Forward Kadin Shedrick grabbed four first-half rebounds (two offensive), which helped pave the way for a balanced scoring effort for Terry’s club.

Guard Tre Johnson scored 11 first-half points, six of which came during a 14-2 run over 4:17 of gameplay that helped Texas go from an 18-17 lead, to a 32-19 advantage that was capped by a Devon Pryor dunk.

Johnson ended the night as the game’s leading scorer, pouring in 22 points on 6-of-16 shooting and went 8-for-8 from the free throw line, but was one of only two Longhorns to reach double digits in scoring.

Texas appeared to be on its way to cruising to a win, holding an 11-point lead with just under four minutes left in the first half, but Beard saw his club go on a 9-2 run to close the half.

The Rebels’ top two scorers in guard Sean Pedulla and forward Jaemyn Brakefield accounted for seven of the nine points, cutting Texas’ lead to four as the Horns took a 38-34 lead into the intermission.

Pedulla led his team with 19 points, while Brakefield had 18 points and five rebounds.

Ole Miss senior guard Dre Davis, who averages 9.5 points and four rebounds per game emerged in the second half as an additional scorer for the Rebels.

Davis hit a pair of buckets as Ole Miss scored 10 of the first 14 points to open the second half, giving the home team a two-point edge with 16 minutes remaining.

Davis finished the night with 17 points and a team-high seven boards.

Both teams would trade buckets over the next 10 minutes, but Texas’ inability to hit shots would pave the way for Ole Miss to take their largest lead of the game.

Longhorns’ guard Jordan Pope shot 1-of-6 in the second half as part of a cold shooting night, with Pope finishing the game 3-of-14 from the field and just eight points.

Forward Arthur Kaluma, who returned to the starting lineup after missing the Texas A&M game with a knee injury scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high seven boards. Kaluma’s jumper with 8:02 left gave Texas a 53-52 lead, but would represent the final Longhorn advantage of the contest.

Following a pair of free throws by Johnson that tied the game at 58, Brakefield hit a jumper and proceeded to steal the ball from Johnson on the ensuing possession that led to a Davis dunk to that gave Ole Miss their largest lead of the game at 63-58.

Johnson and guard Tramon Mark were able to get to the charity stripe, combining to five free throws followed by a Johnson three-pointer that tied the game at 66 with 2:21 left, but the Rebels scored six of the last nine points to seal the game away.

Breakfield and Pedulla hit jumpers to put Ole Miss ahead, while Kaluma missed the second of two free throws which kept the Rebels ahead 70-69. Following a pair of Davon Barnes free throws which extended the lead to three, Johnson had a final three-point shot to tie the game, but it was off the mark.

Ole Miss won the turnover battle 11-4, which led to a 13-4 edge in points off turnovers. Texas outrebounded the Rebels 42-33 and had the advantage in points in the paint 28-24, while shooting 41% from the field (26-of-64).

However, Ole Miss limited Texas to just 5-of-22 from three-point range, while shooting 40% from the field (23-of-58) and 7-of-21 from long distance (33%).

As Beard takes the first meeting against his old team after being dismissed in Jan. 2023, Terry and the Longhorns turn their attention to a matchup at LSU on Saturday looking to keep ground in the SEC standings.

In a thrilling matchup between Ole Miss and Texas, the Rebels came out on top with a 72-69 victory. The game marked a reunion between former Longhorns head coach Chris Beard, now at the helm of Ole Miss, and Rodney Terry’s Texas team.

Beard, who made the move from Texas to Ole Miss in the offseason, faced off against his former team in a highly anticipated matchup. The game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading leads throughout the contest.

In the end, it was Ole Miss who emerged victorious, with Beard securing a hard-fought win over his former team. The Rebels’ resilience and determination were on full display, as they outlasted Texas in a thrilling finish.

The win was a statement victory for Beard and Ole Miss, proving that they are a force to be reckoned with in college basketball. As the season progresses, it will be exciting to see how Beard continues to lead his team to success.

Overall, Ole Miss’ win over Texas was a testament to their perseverance and skill, and a reminder of the impact that Beard has had on the program. It was a night to remember for Rebel fans, as they celebrated a hard-fought victory over a tough opponent.

  • Ole Miss hoops seeking first ever win over No. 1 this weekend as red-hot Auburn comes to town

If one were to ask Ole Miss head coach Chris Beard about the significance of this weekend’s home matchup against No. 1 Auburn, he’d say that it’s the biggest game of the year simply because it’s the next game on the schedule.

That said, the Rebels (16-5, 5-3 SEC) have a chance to make history for the second time this season if they are to pull off the upset. Earlier this month, Ole Miss earned the program’s first ever road win over an AP Top 5 opponent. However, Ole Miss is still 0-for-16 all time against the top-ranked team in the country. On Saturday, the Rebels will get another shot at it as the red-hot Tigers (19-1, 7-0 SEC) come to town.

Tipoff on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. CT inside the SJB Pavilion and can be seen on ESPN or listened to on the Ole Miss Radio Network (Sirius XM 84).

This matchup has been declared a sellout since December of 2024.

“It’s a great opportunity to play against the No. 1 ranked team in the country. Night in and night out, you look at the rankings and there’s 10 ranked teams from the SEC in the Top 25,” Ole Miss assistant coach Brian Burg said on Thursday’s RebTalk. “… They’re really talented. Johni Broome is probably right now player of the year across the country. It’s not just him, it’s an entire team around him. We’re excited to have that ability to compete against them… You look at their team, they’re dynamic from the guard play and Johni Broome being inside. We’re going to have to execute our game plan to a tee and be able to rebound and to have the play style we like to play in. It’s important to execute on Saturday.”

There’s a number of good reasons why Auburn is the unanimous top-ranked team in the country. Out of the 20 games they’ve played, 13 of them were against Quad 1 teams, boasting an incredible 12-1 record against them. They’ve won 12 consecutive games since suffering their one loss at No. 9 Duke.

Preseason SEC Player of the Year and All-American candidate Johni Broome missed two games recently with a left-ankle sprain, but the Tigers have continued to win without him. Broome currently averages 18.2 points per game (second in the SEC) and a conference-best 11.2 rebounds per game. He also ranks among the nation’s best in blocks per game at 2.8, best in the SEC and fifth in the NCAA, and double-doubles with 12, best in the SEC and fifth in the NCAA as well.

It’s not just him though, as the Tigers had five players averaging double-figure points per game. Auburn leads the nation in blocks per game with an average of 7.0 per game, and ranks fourth in assist-turnover ratio at 1.82, and fourth in scoring margin at +18.4. Like Ole Miss, they take care of the basketball by committing just 9.4 turnovers per game.

While Auburn is the unanimous No. 1 overall projected seed in the NCAA Tournament, Ole Miss finds itself projected as high as a No. 5 seed in the South Region, in the exact same region as Auburn. Ole Miss is No. 22 in the NCAA NET at the time of writing with a 4-5 record against Quad 1 opponents.

Ole Miss has been on a bit of a roller coaster since the beginning of SEC play, starting 4-0 for the first time since 2013, dropping three straight with two decided by a single possession, before getting back in the win column with a 72-69 win over Texas.

“We always talk about it being an 18-round fight and we just finished the eighth round. Glad to get back on the winning side. I thought it was a real competitive game. Texas is really talented, but our guys really executed especially late,” Burg said on Thursday.

The Rebels rank fourth in the country by committing just 9.3 turnovers per game with a turnover margin of +6.6, which is third-best in the NCAA. They also force 15.9 per game, the 13th most in the nation.

  • Could England win the Six Nations? Read our England Six Nations preview

Find out all you need to know about Steve Borthwick’s side ahead of the 2025 Guinness Men’s Six Nations

England will be looking to lift the Six Nations trophy for the first time since 2020 in this campaign.

However, odds are stacked against them following a tough 2024. Here’s all you need to know about the team before the tournament begins.

    Six Nations History

Remarkably, England still hold the record for the most Six Nations titles with seven, one clear of Wales, Ireland and France. Three of those titles came in the opening four years.

In recent memory, it’s a solitary Covid Six Nations in 2020 in which England has claimed the silverware. Alongside Ireland, England are one of two sides to have never finished bottom of the championship.

    Form guide

After five consecutive defeats to New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, the form book could hardly be worse. Granted, the margins were narrow but it still racked up to be their lowest win percentage season since 2008. Losing can become a habit that is hard to shake.

The one saving grace last year was that incredible win against Ireland. England’s intensity was eye-watering that day as they starved the Irish of their usual go-forward. In attack, the likes of Ollie Lawrence and Tommy Freeman were clinical.

Maro Itoje has taken the captain’s armband from Saracens team-mate Jamie George and at 30 years old it’s been a long time coming. Notable inclusions in the 36-man training squad were back-rows Tom Willis and Ted Hill, and props Joe Heyes, Asher Opoku-Fordjour and Bevan Rodd. Dan Cole is omitted. Ben Spencer drops out to make way for Alex Mitchell’s return at nine, while uncapped Quins duo Oscar Beard and Cadan Murley also come in.

With George Furbank (fractured arm) unavailable, Freddie Steward is the sole specialist full-back. The opening trip to the Aviva will be make or break for the men in white. They will need to fix the lapses with their blitz defence to have any chance.

    Key player

The shining light for England last year was Marcus Smith. The fly-half was phenomenal in a struggling side, especially through the autumn, and has proved he can command a game at the highest level. The only issue is whether, with Furbank sidelined, Borthwick opts to deploy Smith at full-back and start George Ford or Fin Smith at ten.

Either way, if England are to have any success this campaign, it will likely be because Marcus Smith is humming. Mitchell, too, will be instrumental. The Saints No 9 spent the latter part of 2024 out with a neck injury but is now back to stamp his authority at half-back.

    England

    One to watch

With Joe Marler now retired, Ellis Genge – the joint vice-captain with Jamie George – will have to step up as the squad’s elder statesman at loosehead. The Bristolian has struggled at times lately but the added responsibility could take his game to another level.

    Coach: Steve Borthwick

Last year was one to forget for the Cumbrian. Seven losses in 12 games, with a brawling Six Nations victory against Ireland the only real result to get fans excited. In the midst of that, two coaches threw in the towel during the summer. Aled Walters, head of strength & conditioning, left for the Ireland set-up, while Felix Jones resigned as defence guru.

Strangely, the latter worked his notice as an analyst remotely until leaving the role with ‘immediate effect’ in December. To top things off, there was the noise of the Bill Sweeney RFU bonus furore too, so it’s hard to see this year being any worse for Borthwick.

However, with the incredible player pool at his disposal and three home games at Allianz Stadium, there is a world where fortunes change on a dime and we suddenly see this England team firing on all cylinders again.

    Prediction

If England lose those difficult opening games to Ireland, France and Scotland, that pre-tournament price of 25-1 for a first-ever Wooden Spoon looks like a smart wager. But repeat last year’s Ireland heroics first up and instead we could witness an English renaissance. It really could go either way.

England’s odds to win the tournament stand at 7/2.
