  • Dior’s New Lip Balm is a Win for Darker Skin Tones

Photo-Illustration: by The Cut; Photos: Asia Milia Ware, Retailer

This month, Dior Beauty relaunched a new-and-improved Addict Lip Glow (dupes, beware), its hydrating lip balm with new tints and a slightly adjusted formula. Sometimes, reformulations of cult classics can alter how beauty lovers feel about a product, but this balm is even better than the one we all know and love.

The product is basically a skin-care and makeup hybrid that includes shea butter and a cherry-blossom-oil formula that is said to offer hours of hydration. The product has been around and popular since 2009. In 2023, it started going viral on TikTok, shortly after the virality of Dior’s Lip Glow Oil. It had the same glossy feeling of the lip oil packed in a lip balm, for those who wanted a little tint and a balm-y finish. Of course, people started searching for dupes: Brands like Aldi (yes, the supermarket) had a version of the lip balm with almost identical packaging; Glossier’s hydrating lipstick is often compared to it; and e.l.f. Cosmetics’ hydrating Core Lip Shine is as well, but if you ask the brand, it doesn’t do dupes.

As someone prone to dry lips during the winter, this balm did withstand below-freezing temperatures in Colorado. Yes, I wore it in zero degrees and snow in the mountains, and my lips stayed hydrated.

This isn’t a product with much pigment; Dior has its Dior Addict Lip Tint for a more powerful pigment. These tints are sheer and meant to mimic and enhance lips’ natural color. There are 15 new cool shades, like a very sheer pink, a bright coral (a shade already sold out at Sephora along with a cool berry shade), and a very yellow shade that transforms to a soft pink when applied. There are six new warm shades, including an orange shade and the deepest, a dark purple, that even my mom tries to steal from me because of the balance of pigment and sheerness on darker skin tones.

Outside of the new shades that fit more of a variety of natural lip colors, the balmy texture feels even thicker. With the new formula, I find that I don’t have to reapply as much because the moisture is longer lasting. It’s also why I’ve loved using it as a base layer before putting on a lip oil or lipstick.

If you like the thickness of a balm, this is one of the best. But this won’t give you as much shine as an oil, let’s say. While the formula, tints, and even the packaging have slightly changed (the transparent pink tube is adorned with Dior’s signature logo in silver), the $40 price point stays the same. Is it high for a lip balm? Perhaps, when you have lip balms like Burt’s Bees and Carmex for $4. But like any luxury product, it’s a want, not a need.

Asia wearing the soft nude tone.

Simply put: The new undertone shades work better for darker lip shades. Two new shades — Mahogany and Soft Nude — have been my favorites because they enhance my natural lip color. (In a way that my go-to clear shade doesn’t.) Another shade, Gummy, is so sheer it’s near to being clear on my lips. But that’s the one I put on when I’m going to the gym and I just want my lips to be hydrated without looking like I have any makeup on.

Beauty creator Aditya Madiraju compared it to feeling like Burt’s Bees on your lips but with a tint, as he tried it on his warm toned lips. Multiple people mentioned Clinique’s viral Black Honey lip balm, asking if they can expect a similar effect and tints; depending on whose wearing it, it may have a similar finish. Another creator, Aimee Cheng-Bradshaw, joked that she “has been blessed with really, really dry lips,” as her lips don’t stay moist through many of the balms she’s tried. She tried the Citrus shade and it complemented her natural lip color.

The pH-activated lip balms are available on sephora.com, diorbeauty.com, and in stores.

Dior’s latest lip balm release is a game-changer for those with darker skin tones. The new formula not only provides hydration and protection for the lips, but also offers a subtle tint that complements deeper complexions perfectly.

Many lip balms on the market tend to either wash out darker skin tones or leave a white cast, but Dior’s innovative formula ensures a natural and flattering finish. The balm glides on smoothly and leaves lips feeling soft and moisturized without any greasy residue.

Whether worn alone for a hint of color or as a base for a bold lip look, Dior’s new lip balm is a must-have for those with darker skin tones. Say goodbye to ashy lips and hello to a radiant pout with this game-changing product.

  • Nuggets’ Russell Westbrook exits win due to hamstring tightness

PHILADELPHIA — Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook left Denver’s 137-134 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night because of left hamstring tightness and did not return.

Westbrook, who had 4 points, 7 assists and 6 turnovers in 25 minutes, exited 50 seconds into the fourth quarter after a quick timeout by Nuggets coach Michael Malone, and though the team listed him as questionable, he never returned.

Malone didn’t give an update on Westbrook’s status, though he noted Westbrook had “a big smile on his face” after Denver’s victory. And though Westbrook didn’t speak to the media postgame, he left the arena without a limp.

The Nuggets will close a five-game road trip across eight days Saturday night in Charlotte, North Carolina, the second of a back-to-back set.

After losing the first three games of the road trip in Minnesota, Chicago and New York, Denver appeared headed for another loss. The Nuggets were trailing 123-122 after reigning MVP Nikola Jokic committed a travel with 2:39 remaining.

But then, over the final 2:30, Jokic went 4-for-4 from the field for 11 points and assisted on Christian Braun‘s layup — the only shot attempt by another Nugget during that stretch — to close out the game and snap Denver’s three-game losing streak.

“That’s just what he does,” Braun, who will return to the starting lineup if Westbrook has to miss time, said of Jokic. “He made some big plays for us, and that’s who he is.”

Since Westbrook entered Denver’s starting lineup Dec. 27, he has averaged 14.2 points, 6.6 assists and 6.4 rebounds while shooting 53.8% from the field. It was unclear whether Westbrook would remain in the starting lineup over Braun as Denver has slowly been working Aaron Gordon back into the lineup after a calf injury. On Wednesday, Gordon returned to the starting five and Braun went to the bench as the Nuggets lost to the Knicks.

“Never an easy decision,” Malone said Wednesday. “Christian Braun has been great for us this year. Not good — he’s been great. And he’s done everything that’s been asked of him. But I just like keeping Russell out there.

“I think the Russ-and-Nikola dynamic is the best two-man combination in the NBA right now, and I didn’t want to disrupt their rhythm.”

In a recent game against the Portland Trail Blazers, the Denver Nuggets’ star point guard Russell Westbrook had to exit the game early due to hamstring tightness. Westbrook, who has been a key player for the Nuggets this season, was forced to sit out the remainder of the game as a precautionary measure.

This injury comes at a crucial time for the Nuggets, as they are currently fighting for a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference. Westbrook’s presence on the court has been instrumental in the team’s success, so his absence will surely be felt in the coming games.

The Nuggets’ medical staff will continue to monitor Westbrook’s hamstring tightness and provide updates on his status as more information becomes available. In the meantime, the team will have to rely on their depth and resilience to overcome this setback and continue their push for the playoffs. Stay tuned for more updates on Westbrook’s condition and how it may impact the Nuggets’ season.

  • Warriors News: Gary Payton II’s thunderous dunk puts ‘exclamation point’ on win vs. OKC

    In today’s Dub Hub:

The Golden State Warriors battled their way to a hard-fought 116-109 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night. It was a gritty performance, capped off by Gary Payton II’s electrifying fourth-quarter dunk over Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein, which ignited both the team and the Chase Center crowd.

Steph Curry, who knocked down several deep threes to finish off a 21-point night, spoke about how big Payton’s moment was for the team.

The Warriors have now won three out of their last four games, including two straight to climb back above .500. They’ll look to keep this momentum rolling on Friday when they face the Phoenix Suns.

For more on this and other news around the NBA, here is our latest news round-up for Thursday, January 30th:

    Warriors News:

Every angle of Gary Payton II’s highlight dunk

Warriors’ glue guys put on a show (and perhaps a fitting farewell) against Thunder | The Athletic

“They hyped me up,” Looney said of the crowd. “I almost talked s— when I got the block. I don’t ever do that. It’s always awesome when the crowd is right behind you. When they’re showing you love. I’ve got my own little chant, so I know it’s for me. They show appreciation for when I’m doing all the small stuff. I ain’t doing all the crazy dunks and stuff like that. But they show me love for rebounding and doing what I do.”

Warriors trade intel: What we’re hearing about Jimmy Butler, Zach LaVine and more | The Athletic

LaVine is viewed by some within the organization as the safer option. At 29, he’s five and a half years younger and some $6 million cheaper than Butler this season, though his contract extends longer and he’s had some recent health concerns. There are risks all over the board.

But there is some understanding and alignment from all levels of the Warriors organization that they lack a true second scorer next to Curry, and LaVine’s explosive three-level scoring ability would fill the roster’s largest void. He’s averaging 24 points per game this season on 51 percent overall and 44.6 percent from 3.

Kerr reveals hilarious SGA plea to Thunder coach in Warriors’ win | NBC Sports Bay Area

“I don’t know what to do with Shai. I asked [Thunder coach] Mark [Daigneault] at one point to just leave him on the bench for a couple more minutes. He didn’t comply,” Kerr told reporters after Golden State’s 116-109 win at Chase Center. “I think Shai came back in with like 10 minutes left in the fourth, and I looked down at Mark like, ‘You can’t give him two more minutes? That would be really helpful for us.’ And he just laughed.

“It’s pick your poison with him. The good thing for us down the stretch is we had the lead, so we didn’t mind giving up the 2s. We just didn’t want to blitz or send a double-team at him and risk giving up open 3s. But it’s easier to do that when you have the lead, and that’s what that third quarter allowed us to get back in the game, and we didn’t have to start scrambling on Shai.”

Warriors give ice water celebration for Steve Kerr after win vs. Thunder

    NBA News:

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scores 52, ‘not satisfied’ as OKC falls | ESPN

“There’s probably a tendency in those situations where he’s just humming [to get caught watching Gilgeous-Alexander].” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. “But we also have an identity as a team. We have a bunch of guys that have confidence. We have to be that team regardless of context. Whether he’s having an off night, which doesn’t happen often, or whether he’s having a night like tonight.”

With the Thunder struggling to generate offense from others, Daigneault adjusted his rotation in the fourth quarter to cut his superstar’s rest short. Gilgeous-Alexander checked back in with the score tied and 9:55 remaining, about three minutes earlier than usual.

Hawks’ Jalen Johnson (shoulder) out for season | NBA

The Atlanta Hawks will be without one of their standout players for the rest of the season.

Forward Jalen Johnson will have surgery on a left shoulder injury he suffered in last Thursday’s 122-119 loss to the Toronto Raptors, the team announced today. Johnson was injured when he fouled Scottie Barnes in the second quarter. He left the court immediately and did not return to that game and was battling right shoulder inflammation entering the game vs. Toronto.

Johnson, in his fourth NBA season, was enjoying a career-best campaign with career highs in scoring (18.9 ppg), rebounding (10 rpg) and assists (5 apg) while also contributing 1.6 steals per game and shooting 50% overall and 31.2% on 3-pointers.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver floats the idea of changing the game to 10 minute quarters

In case you missed it at Golden State of Mind:

Steph Curry named USA Basketball’s 2024 5-on-5 Male Athlete of the Year

USA Basketball announced some of the organization’s 2024 awards on Wednesday, naming Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry the 5-on-5 Male Athlete of the Year. Curry, of course, led Team USA to a Gold Medal victory at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. In Team USA’s 6-0 run, Curry averaged a team-best 14.8 points per game on wildly-efficient .500/.478/1.000 shooting splits.

  • What we learned as Warriors stun first-place Thunder in comeback win

What we learned as Warriors stun first-place Thunder in comeback win originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

    BOX SCORE

SAN FRANCISCO – Nine days after getting blown out by the Boston Celtics and looking nothing like an NBA playoff contender, the Warriors turned the tide and stunned the best team in basketball, beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 116-109 on Wednesday.

It took just about everything that Golden State had, too.

After digging a double-digit hole in the first half, the Warriors (24-23) chipped away and had the Chase Center crowd roaring after Stephen Curry’s go-ahead 3-pointer with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The lead changed hands four times after that until Curry and Andrew Wiggins nailed consecutive 3-pointers with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter to help secure the win.

Curry returned to the lineup after sitting out Tuesday’s win over the Utah Jazz to rest his aching knees and scored 21 points, moving past Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Ray Allen for 27th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

Wiggins was in solid form with 27 points. Kevon Looney added a career-high-tying 18 points, Gary Payton II had 15 points including an emphatic one-handed jam in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to go with nine rebounds. Brandin Podziemski added 11 points.

The Warriors needed every bit of it on a night when they had no answer for Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The NBA’s leading scorer had more points by himself than the Warriors had as a team at one point in the first half and finished the night with 52 points.

Now 3-1 on their homestand, the Warriors turn their attention to the Phoenix Suns who come to town Friday.

Here are the takeaways from Wednesday’s game:

    Steph Finds His Shot

Historically, Curry has had some of the best games of his NBA career against the Thunder. He went into the night averaging 29.6 points a game against OKC, Curry’s second-best average against any team. After sitting out Tuesday’s win over the Jazz, however, Curry’s return got off to a slow start.

Playing against the best defense in the NBA, Curry struggled to get an open look and took a couple of forced shots that didn’t connect. He missed his first five shots and was 1 of 7 at halftime.

The two-time NBA scoring champ warmed up in the second half, knocking down 5 of 8 shots and scoring 17 points.

Credit some of Curry’s shooting problems to the Thunder, who repeatedly sent double-teams toward Curry to keep him from finding any sort of shooting rhythm.

    Keep It Coming, Wiggs

Wiggins is in the midst of another scoring flurry, and the timing was perfect against the Thunder with the rest of Golden State’s offense stumbling.

Wiggins shot 10 of 17 from the floor and made several big shots, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer just before halftime. That’s five games in a row and eight of nine that Wiggins has reached double figures. He had a 13-game stretch earlier this season.

Until Jonathan Kuminga returns from his injury, Wiggins will continue to be the Warriors’ second-best scoring option. And as teams continue to send extra defenders in Curry’s direction, Wiggins should get plenty of open looks.

    Starting Lineup Shake-up

Quinten Post’s first career NBA start didn’t last very long. The 7-footer played eight bland minutes in the first half then spent the rest of the game on the bench.

Post earned the start following a week of solid games when he was one of Golden State’s most effective reserves.

It was a different story as a starter.

Post had a stat line filled with zeroes other than the three fouls he picked up.

Despite Post’s rough night, it likely won’t be his last time taking the floor as a starter. With his ability to shoot from distance, Post is a legit stretch 5 and his presence on the court forces opponents to defend him honestly, which creates better spacing for Golden State’s shooters, especially Curry.

The Golden State Warriors pulled off a stunning comeback win against the first-place Oklahoma City Thunder, proving that they are still a force to be reckoned with in the NBA.

Here are some key takeaways from the Warriors’ impressive victory:

    1. Never count out the Warriors: Despite facing a double-digit deficit in the second half, the Warriors never lost faith in themselves and continued to fight back until they secured the win. This resilience and never-say-die attitude are trademarks of championship teams, and the Warriors showed that they still possess those qualities.

    2. Steph Curry is still a superstar: Curry put on a show in the second half, scoring 20 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Warriors to victory. His ability to take over games and hit clutch shots is unparalleled, and he once again proved why he is one of the best players in the league.

    3. Defense wins games: The Warriors’ defense stepped up in the second half, holding the Thunder to just 17 points in the fourth quarter. Their ability to get stops and force turnovers was crucial in their comeback win, showing that defense is just as important as offense in winning games.

Overall, the Warriors’ victory over the Thunder was a statement win that showed they are still a team to be feared in the NBA. With their combination of talent, experience, and heart, the Warriors have proven that they are capable of competing with the best teams in the league.
