  • In ‘A Complete Unknown,’ Bob Dylan’s Politics Are Blowin’ in the Wind

It might at first seem obvious why filmmakers won’t leave the subject of Bob Dylan alone. Search “Dylan” and “movies,” and the list — from documentaries like “Don’t Look Back” (1967) to fictionalized treatments like “I’m Not There” (2007) — turns out to be surprisingly extensive. The man was one of our most idiosyncratic and arresting artists during a revolutionary period in our popular music. And for all its diffidence and evasiveness, his was the work most often held up as Important — no small claim in the realm of pop music, especially then — and he was the one ratified as profound, even before the Nobel Committee’s intervention. What actor doesn’t want to play a charismatically elusive genius? What director wouldn’t like to imagine himself or herself as a kindred spirit?

But there are other reasons Dylan remains snagged in our collective consciousness, especially now. Though at least two of his songs — “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’” — have been irrevocably shanghaied as the examples of Protest Songs of the ’60s, his more fundamental role might have been to serve as America’s political songwriter for the apolitical. The lyrics for the albums “Bringing It All Back Home” and “Highway 61 Revisited” are not only irreverently funny and freewheeling in their pillaging of high and low culture, but they’re also sardonic, ambiguous and offhand. They’re the opposite of earnest, and when they point out problems, they do it with a shrug. Like many of his countrymen and women, he periodically registered with clarity or even outrage the state of the status quo, but he mostly dismissed any notion that he should extend his fretting over it.

Those two albums were recorded roughly in the period covered by James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown,” the most recent cinematic tribute to Dylan, starring Timothée Chalamet, and the latest stone added to the Everest of such works. Though the drama begins and ends with Dylan’s devotion to Woody Guthrie’s work, the movie makes vividly clear how much more anarchic and exciting Dylan seemed than folk music’s other standard bearers, singer-songwriters like Pete Seeger and Joan Baez, since they were stuck not only lamenting injustice but also promoting an agenda for social change. Dylan’s lyrics, on the other hand, mostly seemed to suggest It’s All Absurd or, more pointedly, They’re All Assholes, a sentiment that adorned more than a few political lawn signs in 2024. A huge number of our cultural heroes, fictional and otherwise, have prided themselves on not being political, on their individuality as their ultimate value. Think of our western heroes, or our private eyes, or the way so many presidential candidates, the very definition of the triumphant insider, try to position themselves as outsiders. And as anyone who has attended one of his concerts knows, the central characteristic of Dylan’s career has been to not do what’s expected of him, even to the extent of putting out one of the most godawful Christmas albums in the history of the genre. Dylan’s version of rebellion much more resembles that of Brando’s in “The Wild One.” When asked, “Hey, Johnny, what are you rebelling against?” Brando famously replied “Whaddaya got?”

In “A Complete Unknown,” that same orneriness causes Dylan to rebel against the expectation that he will be a crusader for social justice, a rebellion we’re encouraged to support. Bob Dylan should be allowed to be Bob Dylan, after all, and we Dylan fans know that going electric enabled some of his greatest music. Poor Pete Seeger and Joan Baez are portrayed as sweet and well meaning but also comparatively pallid and hopelessly unprepared for the ferocity of the tumult that’s about to upend American life. But while valorizing yourself as unwilling to dance to someone else’s tune might make you sound like a revolutionary, and even make you sympathetic to revolutionary impulses, it also most likely leaves you poorly suited to contributing to collective action.

Bob Dylan’s music has always been a reflection of the times, with his lyrics often containing political messages and social commentary. In his latest release, “A Complete Unknown,” Dylan’s political beliefs are once again at the forefront.

Throughout his career, Dylan has been known for his outspoken views on various political issues, from civil rights to war to environmental concerns. In “A Complete Unknown,” he continues to explore these themes, blending his signature poetic lyrics with his thoughts on the current state of the world.

The title itself, “A Complete Unknown,” hints at the uncertainty and chaos of the modern political landscape. Dylan’s lyrics are filled with references to division, injustice, and the struggle for change. He paints a picture of a world in turmoil, where the lines between right and wrong are blurred and the future is uncertain.

As always, Dylan’s music serves as a call to action, urging listeners to think critically about the world around them and to take a stand for what they believe in. In “A Complete Unknown,” his politics are as relevant and powerful as ever, blowing in the wind and inspiring change.

So whether you’re a longtime fan of Bob Dylan or just discovering his music, “A Complete Unknown” is sure to leave a lasting impact and spark important conversations about the state of our world today.

  • More wind and Red Flag conditions ahead, Monday January 20th forecast

Another cool and cloudy day for most areas as the onshore flow keeps us under a steady ocean breeze. This is excellent news for fire fighting concerns as the abundant humidity and light westerly winds aid in the fire fight. Look for more clouds and fog overnight with mostly light winds and chilly overnight temperatures.

Monday will start out very quiet with more weak onshore winds and very cool temperatures. However, our next offshore wind event with Santa Lucias in our north and the very dangerous Santa Anas in Southern California, will likely begin by late morning. Unfortunately, our computer models are now seeing some key ingredients fall in line to make this a strong and even severe event. This means portions of Ventura County could see winds well above 60 mph. Hopefully the winds won’t get that strong, but as mentioned, the variables are there that could make this a very strong event. A Red Flag Warning is back in effect with more wind watches posted which will likely be elevated to warnings as we move in to early Monday. The winds are expected to last through mid day Tuesday and then drop off quickly. The poor fire fighting conditions will linger through mid week and maybe even in to Thursday as humidity usually takes a day or two to start rising after a strong offshore wind ends. Temperatures will stay on the cool side despite the usual warming from the offshore winds as cold air drifts in from the north and helps to bolster the winds.  A very weak chance for showers does come in to play by next weekend and while this is positive news, it may end up being minimal at best or yet another wind maker.

  • Tuesday in Nebraska: Fire Risks, Wind Gusts, and Rain Chances by Week’s End

Brush, fire risk burn notice, red flag warning weather

Omaha, NE – Nebraska residents should brace for elevated fire risks on Tuesday as warm, breezy weather continues across the state. Temperatures will climb into the mid-50s, coupled with gusty winds reaching up to 25-30 mph, creating prime conditions for fires to ignite and spread rapidly.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Omaha, the areas near the Platte and Elkhorn rivers are also at risk of ice jams due to rising temperatures. Ice jams could result in minor flooding, prompting local officials to monitor river levels closely. Residents should remain vigilant and avoid flood-prone areas.

The week ahead includes a mix of sunny skies through Wednesday, followed by increasing rain chances Thursday into Friday, with up to a ¾ inch of precipitation expected in some areas. Winds will ease midweek, with temperatures cooling slightly into the 40s by Friday.

Drivers are urged to use caution along Nebraska highways, especially during high wind periods. Avoid outdoor burning to minimize fire risks. The warm, dry conditions will likely subside by the weekend, offering cooler, clearer weather for outdoor activities.

Stay informed with regular updates from local authorities and prepare for changing conditions.

Tuesday in Nebraska: Fire Risks, Wind Gusts, and Rain Chances by Week’s End

As we head into another week in Nebraska, residents are being urged to stay vigilant as fire risks remain high across the state. With dry conditions and gusty winds in the forecast, the potential for wildfires to spread rapidly is a major concern.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of Nebraska, indicating that conditions are ripe for the rapid spread of fires. It is important for everyone to exercise caution and avoid any activities that could potentially spark a blaze.

In addition to the fire risks, strong wind gusts are expected throughout the day on Tuesday. Wind speeds could reach up to 30 mph in some areas, posing a threat to any existing fires and making it difficult for firefighters to contain them.

However, there is some hope on the horizon. By the end of the week, there is a chance for some much-needed rain to move through the region. While the exact timing and amounts are still uncertain, any precipitation would be a welcome relief for firefighters and residents alike.

In the meantime, it is crucial for everyone to stay informed and prepared for any potential fire threats. Keep an eye on local news and weather updates, and be ready to take action if necessary. Together, we can work to keep Nebraska safe during this challenging time.

  • Wind torments golfers during second round of Farmers Insurance Open; Lanto Griffin, Ludvig Aberg share clubhouse lead – San Diego Union-Tribune

The wind whipped up and took the scores with it on Thursday in the second round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Wind gusts reached more than 35 mph — enough to move balls on the green and force an 86-minute suspension of play that prevented the round from being completed.

With 29 golfers still on the course when darkness came, the clubhouse leaders were Ludvig Aberg and Lanto Griffin. Both were at 6-under midway through the tournament.

First-round leader Aberg shot a 3-over 75 on the South Course, allowing Griffin to draw even with an even-par 72 on the South.

“Throw the score out the window — a normal day 72’s good on this golf course and today was just head-down grind,” Griffin said. “The goal on the back — I didn’t make a birdie on the front — the goal on the back nine was just to make a birdie, get some momentum going.”

Griffin called the conditions “brutal” when winds gusted to an estimated 35 mph as he walked to the tee box on the 614-yard 13th hole.

“So it was kind of hang on for dear life, try and save pars on the majority of the holes and sprinkle in a birdie or two,” he said.

Danny Walker was a stroke behind the leaders following a 2-over 74 on the North.

“A crazy day, for sure,” Walker said. “One of those days where you can’t even think about what you’re shooting, just got to do your best to hit every shot and just accept whatever happens. So much of where the ball’s going to go is just out of your control. Did my best to just keep a level head and just take it one shot at a time. It’s all you could do.”

Three other players — Hayden Springer, Chris Gotterup and Sungjae Im — are two strokes behind he leaders.

Gotterup moved into contention by posting one of the low rounds of the day, a 3-under 69 on the North. Jason Day (tied for 26th, five strokes back) also had a 69 on the North. No one else could make such a claim.

The best score on the South also was a 3-under 69, carded by Jackson Suber, who was tied for 14th at 2-under for the tournament.

Amateur Luke Clanton, a Florida State junior, played himself onto the leaderboard by shooting 1-under through 16 holes on the South. That placed him with six others at 3 under, though Clanton and Will Gordon still have to finish their rounds.

Clanton has a chance at the Farmers to earn his PGA Tour card through the tour’s Accelerated program, which allows top college players to earn tour cards based on what they do in amateur, college and pro golf events. A top-five finish in the Farmers would get Clanton three points, getting him to the 20 points needed to receive his card.

The second round was scheduled to be completed Friday morning at 7:30. The third round will begin moments thereafter for the 65 players (and ties) who survive the cut that is projected at plus-1. The final two rounds are played on the South Course.

Defending champion Matthieu Pavon will not be among them after shooting a second-day 80 (North) that put him at 9-over for the tournament. Max Homa, the 2023 Farmers champion, withdrew during the wind delay with three holes to play. Homa was 4-over for the day and 9-over for the tournament when he withdrew.

Griffin, the defending champion, showed his resilience in the face of the gusty winds, carding a solid round to put himself in contention for back-to-back titles. Aberg, a young up-and-coming player, also impressed with his steady play and ability to handle the tough conditions.

With the leaderboard tightly packed and the wind expected to continue to be a factor in the final rounds, the stage is set for an exciting weekend of golf at Torrey Pines. Stay tuned to see who will emerge victorious in this battle against the elements at the Farmers Insurance Open.
