  • Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry chasing Sepp Straka after windy, rainy day at Pebble Beach

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Sepp Straka took a trip down to the beach that derailed his round Saturday, and then recovered with four birdies on his last five holes in a cold, whipping wind for a 2-under 70 to reclaim the lead over the Irish duo of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

McIlroy was practically flawless, at least in the nasty conditions, by getting through the exposed stretch of Pebble Beach without dropping a shot and chipping his way around for a bogey-free 65.

Lowry got off to a birdie-eagle-birdie start that allowed for a few mistakes around the turn and he finished with two birdies on the last three holes for a 65.

Just don’t get the idea Irish weather was well-suited for McIlroy (Northern Ireland) and Lowry (Ireland), especially because they now are neighbors in South Florida.

“It might suit me somewhat, but I don’t enjoy it,” Lowry said. “I live in Florida for a reason. I think my game is well-equipped to handle these conditions and I go out there, kind of no fear, and I know I just need to batten down the hatches and make pars when I can.”

The second signature event of the year produced big names at the top, and this one had a distinctive Ryder Cup feel — European, that is.

Straka, the Austrian-born Georgia Bulldog coming off a win in the California desert, blasted out of the sand to 4 feet for one last birdie that putt him at 16-under 200, one shot ahead of McIlroy and Lowry, his Ryder Cup teammates from Marco Simone.

Justin Rose of England, a Pebble Beach winner in 2023 and part of Team Europe later that year, was another shot behind.

Scottie Scheffler, in his 2025 debut delayed by his hand surgery from a freak puncture wound, held it together for a 69 and was six shots behind.

Gone are the days of the old Crosby Clambake, with amateurs having left on Friday. But it was reminiscent of the Clambake weather, not the prettiest pictures but a delight to see golf’s best players have their hands full with a wind ripping off the Pacific Ocean.

Scheffler couldn’t believe it when he hit a 5-iron as pure as can be on the 10th hole and watched it fly only 155 yards, 20 yards short of his target. Lowry knows the feeling. He drilled a 3-iron and came up short.

McIlroy had a suitable game plan. When the wind arrived as he was on the sixth hole, he said he turned to caddie Harry Diamond and said, “Let’s try to chip the ball around today.”

“I feel like I didn’t make a full swing after that,” McIlroy said.

Here’s a look at tee times, groupings and how to watch the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

He had to save par six times from the rough and bunkers, none more valuable than from down in the high grass below the 10th green to 6 feet and a key par putt.

“That was a key up-and-down to just to keep the momentum of the round going,” he said.

The 10th hole is where Straka nearly came undone. His approach sailed well to the right, over the cliff and onto the beach. He went down to the sand and picked up his golf ball, taking the penalty shot instead of trying the dramatic shot off the beach, and did well to salvage bogey.

But he bogeyed the next two holes, going from a four-shot lead early in the round to trailing by two shots. Straka, though, is equipped with newfound confidence and steadied himself on the way in with birdies on the 14th and 15th holes, a 30-foot birdie putt for the only birdie of the day on the par-3 17th and his closing birdie.

It sets up a final round in which six players are separated by two shots and Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 player, hanging around on the edge of contention. He didn’t birdie a par 5 until the last hole — two par 5s on the front were in benign conditions — but made a pair of birdies late.

“I hung in there on a day where I didn’t have my best stuff,” Scheffler said.

McIlroy doesn’t usually have great success on the West Coast — his lone California victory was in early May in the Match Play at Harding Park in 2015 — but has talked about this being a big year for him on several front. Pebble Beach wasn’t at the front of his mind, but it is now.

“It’s really cool to be in contention this early in the season,” he said.

McIlroy and Lowry both began the week making a hole-in-one — Lowry on the seventh hole at Pebble Beach, McIlroy on the 15th at Spyglass — and now the longtime friends from Irish golf will be in the final group with Straka.

“There’s a few courses in the world that you would like to win on and this is definitely one of them,” Lowry said. “So you try not to think about stuff like that and hopefully it comes to you someday.”

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are in hot pursuit of Sepp Straka after a windy and rainy day at Pebble Beach. The challenging conditions didn’t seem to faze Straka, who managed to hold onto his lead heading into the final round of the tournament.

McIlroy and Lowry, however, are not far behind and are determined to close the gap and come out on top. With their skill and experience, they are sure to put up a tough fight in what promises to be an exciting finish.

Stay tuned as these talented golfers battle it out in what is sure to be a thrilling conclusion to the tournament at Pebble Beach. Who will come out on top? Only time will tell.

  • Windy, chances of snow this week in Massachusetts – Boston News, Weather, Sports

While temperatures won’t be arctic cold most days, the wind expected this week will make it feel even colder. Plus, we also have a couple different chances for snow over the next week.

Monday morning lows will get down to the upper teens and low 20s, but with the expected slight breeze that’ll feel like the teens. Make sure to bundle up!

Monday afternoon, highs will warm to the low to mid 30s but with winds gusting over 20 mph that’ll still only feel like the 20s. At least skies will be bright.

Tuesday morning, mainly before 9 a.m., we have a chance for some spotty, hit-or-miss snow showers that could lead to a couple spotty coatings. Otherwise, Tuesday will be the worst day for the wind. Winds will easily gust over 30-35 mph at times.

That will make the afternoon highs in the low to mid 30s feel like the teens!

Wednesday’s snow chance is much more widespread.

An Alberta Clipper will move into our area bringing widespread, yet very light, snow early in the morning and tapering off into the afternoon and evening. Snow amounts will not be significant, right now early estimates are less than an inch. Highs will reach the low to mid 30s.

Thursday will be a frigid cold day, but at least it’ll be short-lived. Morning lows will get down to the teens with afternoon highs in the low to mid 20s. With windy conditions, it’ll only feel like the teens during the warmest part of the day. Skies will be bright.

Temperatures are now expected to warm up quicker on Friday. The morning will be cold but afternoon highs will rebound nicely to the low to mid 30s. Our forecast gets a little unsettled again as we head into next weekend with chances for snow.

  • Dennis Allen headed to the Windy City?

Former Saints head coach Dennis Allen headed to the Windy City?

All right, let’s do some who, what, when, where, why all the questions, Katherine, when it comes to the Saints salary cap. How in world do they get on the cap? I know they’re not 100 million over the cap like *** few years ago. Well, you know, salary cap is my favorite topic. I write *** piece every single year about how they get under, so maybe the Saints are helping me stay employed by doing this every year, but this year actually surprisingly is not as bad, just like you said. They started out the offseason predicted to be around 65 million. That’s just based on an estimated cap. They already made one major move and that was restructuring Ryan Rammchek, who did the same thing that Drew Brees did in 2021, lowered his base salary, which is an indication that he could. tire due to his, you know, knee injuries that prevented him from playing in 2024, and they’ll have more moves to come. Major moves. What other major moves can the Saints make to get underneath the cap? Well, first of all, they have $17 million in dead money potentially pending, and it depends on whether they resigned Chase Young, resign Tano, resign Jaan Johnson. And so that’s one thing, but obviously they’re going to have *** few restructures potentially with some of the younger players, and then they’ll have to make *** few cuts. The older players are the interesting topic here because *** lot of older players are tying up *** significant portion of the salary cap. When the Saints entered this offseason before the Ryan Rammchek move, it was *** 140 million in salary cap hits just for six players. So it’s not easily fixable, but obviously the Saints will figure out *** way to do it by March. The next big question, quarterback Derek Carr. What is it? 51 1.4 million this year. That is *** lot of money. What do they do with Derek Carr? Do they bring him back? Did they restructure? You already asked him about taking *** pay cut, and that was that was *** pretty definite no. So what do they do? Well, I think that what I would do if I was *** salary cap manager is you would move forward with Derek Carr at 51.4 million. I know that’s *** huge salary cap hit, however, then you can move on from him more easily next year. And the reason I say that is because the Saints don’t have the first pick in the draft, as Mickey Loomis said, they don’t have an easy way to get *** slam dunk. quarterback. It really is going to depend on *** few factors though. Who does the next head coach want? Does the next head coach want to go with someone like Jake Hayner or Spencer Rattler? Do they want to try to move up in the draft, or do they think, well, we’ll use Derek Carr as *** bridge quarterback and then kind of start moving on in earnest in 2026. There’s really *** lot of ways and things that could happen before that Derek Carr decision is made. Keyword here, I don’t think Mickey Loomis really likes this word rebuilds. Do they rebuild? He’s never liked that word. I think, uh, what was it? 10 years ago. It wasn’t Mickey, but Drey said the window was slammed open, and I think that they continue to think that way. The problem is it’s hard to rebuild the NFL. Everyone wants to say, oh, let’s just tear it down to the studs. Well, with the salary cap, it’s hard to do because of the dead money hits that come with restructuring and then trying to move on from those players early. So the way to rebuild is to to stop doing that, to try to just basically take your lumps this year and then 2026, you have not *** clean slate, but *** much easier slate to manage. So I’m assuming here. That that maybe they’re somewhat of players in free agency, but this is where they have to do their damage to get this roster back is in the NFL draft like they did in 2017 and even back in 2006. Yeah, I totally agree that they shouldn’t be huge players in free agency. I thought that last year and they kind of surprised everyone by going and spending *** lot of money on Chase Young. I think that this draft is so important, and you could say that every year. But the Saints haven’t really hit on *** lot of drafts lately, so they need that they need this draft to hit and these guys on rookie contracts to be able to kind of help massage the salary cap in the next few years. You know, the one thing Mickey Loomis says is getting things right. They want to get back into the playoffs. He has *** lot of pressure to, you know, make this franchise *** winning franchise again. It’s been 4 years. The pressure starts to add up and add up after years of not getting into the postseason. How long, much longer does he stay as the GM? How much longer do you think he wants to do this? He was asked about retirement. He said, no, if I can’t do it, then maybe I’ll think about it. Well, I was joking how last year Mickey Loomis said that everyone needed to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, and then this year he said he was comfortably uncomfortable. So I, I don’t know what we’ll hear next year, but I think that everyone kind of should be on edge, you know, from the front office down to. You know, whatever coaches remain here next year because if they don’t make *** great coaching hire and hit on this draft, then they’ll be right back in this position in *** few years and I think Mickey Loomis, who’s already getting *** lot of scrutiny, will probably start getting more internal scrutiny. But you know, for now it seems like they’re comfortable kind of moving ahead with their current front office structure. This is *** crystal ball question how far away is this franchise from being *** competitive franchise again? Well, you see franchises all the time turn around quickly when you make the right moves. Uh, you saw that with Denver, uh, Detroit, now look at them after where they were just *** few years ago. You know, the right coach and hitting on the draft can turn things around immediately, but I do think that this is going to be harder with the state of the salary cap, just *** lot of different areas going on. So. I would be surprised if they’re suddenly able to turn it into *** winning season next year, but I think if they make the right moves within, you know, maybe the next few years, starting to clean slate in 2026, you might be able to start building back up. All right. She is Catherine Terrell from ESPN answering all your questions about the cap, free agency, draft, every question that we can possibly ask. Thanks, Kat. Thanks for having me on back to you.

Windy, wintry weekend: What you need to know about the weather

After Friday’s snowy and frigid temperatures, the weekend will not be any better in the D.C. area.

After Friday’s snowy and frigid temperatures, the weekend will not be any better in the D.C. area.

Here’s what you need to know.

Saturday will be cold but sunny, with wind gusts coming in between 20 and 30 mph.

“Travel on potentially icy surfaces could become more treacherous with the gusty winds. Persistent winds, however, should aid in the drying of the low levels, so hopefully this will limit how widespread icy spots are,” the National Weather Service forecasted.

Sunday will be clear and sunny, with temperatures in the 30s. Snow will continue throughout the day, increasing overnight.

WTOP Meteorologist Mike Stinneford said a significant winter storm will affect the D.C. area from Sunday night into Monday, with the risk of several inches of snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain and sleet.

In fact, early predications indicate the region may see anywhere between 5 to 8 inches of snow Sunday night into Monday for much of the D.C. area, marking the season’s first heavy snowstorm.

“Cold weather remains locked in place for the day with clouds increasing ahead of our next weather-maker which is likely to bring the first big snow of the season to region,” 7News First Alert Chief Meteorologist Veronica Johnson said of Sunday’s weather.

Johnson said the “very cold weekend” will serve as a precursor to even colder temperatures that will stick around into the week ahead. The highest readings this week will stay around freezing temperatures.

The teeth-chattering temperatures won’t be going anywhere anytime soon, according to Johnson. She warned they would be sticking around through mid-January.

    FORECAST

Temperatures will tumble well below freezing overnight into Saturday, and any standing water and slush will freeze. Saturday will be a windy and cold day. A significant winter storm will affect the D.C. area on Sunday night into Monday, with the risk of several inches of snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain and sleet.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny, windy and cold. Highs 30 to 35.

SUNDAY: Sunny in the morning. Increasing cloudiness in the afternoon. Highs in the mid to upper 30s.

MONDAY: Snow likely, possibly mixed with sleet. Several inches of snow possible. Highs upper 20s to lower 30s.

TUESDAY: Early snow showers, then clearing, breezy and cold. Highs in the low to mid-30s.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid to upper 30s.

Much of the day will be cloudy with a stray rain shower that can’t be ruled out as a weak cold front passes through the Midstate this afternoon. Most of us will end up staying dry, but we could even see a couple of flakes fly in the higher elevations later today.

Temperatures will actually fall this afternoon into the 40s.

Tonight will be colder with lows in the 30s by tomorrow morning.

    WEDNESDAY

Our first day of 2025 will be chilly with highs staying in the 40s for the afternoon, but we are going to get some good sunshine back after a cloudy start. It will be colder Wednesday night with lows in the 20s by Thursday morning.

    LATE WEEK

The chilly weather will settle in for Thursday and Friday with highs in the low to mid-40s, but at least we’ll have a good deal of sunshine on both days. Overnight lows will be near if not below freezing once again Thursday and Friday night.

    SATURDAY

Temperatures on Saturday will to struggle to get back to nearly 40 for the day with a partly cloudy sky in the afternoon. Lows Saturday night will be down into the 20s.

FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY – SUNDAY

We are keeping a very close eye on a complex storm system for the end of our weekend and early next week. Details are limited as of now, but this is your early heads up that widespread rain and even some wintry mix will be possible Sunday and Sunday night across Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. The timing of that precipitation could change so stick with us on WSMV 4 for the latest updates.

Get ready for an arctic blast next week with high temperatures that may even struggle to break out of the 20s in some areas.

As we bid farewell to 2024 and welcome in the new year, Mother Nature seems to have her own plans for how we’ll be ringing in 2025. A strong cold front has brought blustery winds to many parts of the country, making for a windy end to the year for much of the nation.

As we move into the first days of 2025, the chilly temperatures that have accompanied these strong winds are set to stick around. Many areas are experiencing below-average temperatures, with some regions even seeing the first snowfall of the season.

So as we bundle up and brace ourselves for the cold, let’s remember to stay safe and warm as we navigate this chilly start to the new year. Here’s to hoping for a brighter and warmer future ahead in 2025! #WindyEnd #ChillyStart #2025

    Bitter Cold Air Almost Certain

This is your First Alert that January is certainly going to be MUCH colder than average. The latest data continues to show several rounds of frigid air moving in during the first 2-3 weeks of the month pushing temperatures 10-20 degrees below normal.

Below are forecasted temperatures for early NEXT week, which show highs in the 30s. It gets even colder by late next week.

The coldest of air may not peak until the middle of the month. Early model guidance is showing the potential for lows in the teens even for the Roanoke Valley by next week, which means rural areas will likely get deep into the single digits.

The coldest temperature we had in 2024 was January 17th when we got down to 13° in the Roanoke Valley. This cold outbreak could surpass that.

    Early Signs Of Wintry Weather

The less certain part of the forecast is the opportunity for wintry precipitation. We’re confident in the cold air, but the model trends have been suggesting the opportunity for a low-pressure system (storm) to develop early next week, somewhere around the Jan 6-7 timeframe. Anything more than that is pure speculation at this point.

A very active pattern is setting up for January which could lead to wintry weather.
