  • Blue Jackets, Red Wings players pranked with Ohio State jerseys

Even long after an athlete leaves campus, college rivalries have a habit of never truly dying. The vitriol between schools remains years and even decades later. When it comes to Ohio State and Michigan, that’s especially true.

If they didn’t already know, a few NHL players are finding that out.

In advance of the Blue Jackets’ game against the Detroit Red Wings at Ohio Stadium on March 1, several former Michigan standouts on both teams — Adam Fantilli and Kent Johnson of the Blue Jackets and Dylan Larkin of the Red Wings — were given Ohio State jerseys as a prank by apparel company Fanatics weeks before they prepare to play in the home football venue of their former school’s archrival.

The players were handed a set of jerseys to look at and sign, with a Buckeyes hockey sweater mixed somewhere in the collection.

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings players got a surprise when they arrived at the rink for practice today – they were greeted with Ohio State jerseys hanging in their lockers!

The prank was orchestrated by some mischievous teammates looking to have a little fun before their upcoming game against each other. The players couldn’t help but laugh as they tried on the scarlet and gray jerseys, some even posing for pictures and joking about their new look.

Despite the good-natured ribbing, both teams took it in stride and had a good laugh together. It just goes to show that even in the heat of competition, there’s always room for some lighthearted fun.

As they gear up for their game, it’s safe to say that the Blue Jackets and Red Wings will be keeping a close eye on their lockers from now on. Who knows what other surprises might be in store for them next time!

  • Red Wings’ Patrick Kane boosted by ‘welcome change’ to game

Patrick Kane didn’t collect more than 1,300 points by sitting back and letting the game come to him. He thrives with the puck on his stick and in a system that stresses an aggressive attack.

He’s been rejuvenated since Todd McLellan took over as Detroit Red Wings coach and on Monday was named the NHL’s third star of the week after collecting six points (two goals, four assists) in three games. It’s the first time this season a Red Wing has been among the league’s weekly three stars.

Kane’s strong play goes further back than that. He’s riding a seven-game points streak (five goals, eight assists), as is linemate Alex DeBrincat (six goals, five assists).

Kane credited McLellan’s approach for his own success and the team’s.

“Just the part of our game that’s kind of always on the hunt, always playing more towards the other team’s net instead of like sitting back a little bit has been a welcome change for my game,” Kane said. “And not only my game, but the team in general. I mean, obviously, the chemistry with DeBrincat and (Andrew) Copp has been really good, too, for a while, and we’ve been playing well. We probably feel like we can produce a little bit more, but we’ve been getting chances and playing well in that regard.

“So, try to keep pushing forward and keep playing aggressive. I think that’s a big part of our reason for success right now.”

The Red Wings (20-18-4) have won seven in a row, their longest winning streak since January 2012. They’ll try to extend it Tuesday at home against the San Jose Sharks (7 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network).

Kane had gone a career-high nine games without a point from Nov. 15-Dec. 12 (he missed five games during that stretch with an injury). Now he’s back to stepping up at key moments.

Kane notched his 13th career overtime goal and 79th game-winning goal last Tuesday in a 3-2 victory over Ottawa. He collected three assists Friday in a 5-3 win over Chicago – his 22nd career three-assist performance. He picked up a goal and an assist Sunday in a 6-2 victory over Seattle, his ninth multi-point game this season.

“I’m honored to be his coach,” McLellan said. “You watch him all those years and try and solve him all those years. I’m glad I don’t have to do that. His poise with the puck is uncanny, how he can slow things down, speed it up. Probably an underrated shot, I never gave him enough credit for a shot like that, that he scored on (vs. Ottawa). He quietly leads, goes about his business and everybody kind of follows.”

Kane, 36, has 10 goals and 27 points in 37 games overall.

Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck (2-0-0, 1.00 goals-against average, .960 save percentage) was the No. 1 star and Carolina center Jordan Staal (five goals, two assists) was the second star.

The Detroit Red Wings’ star forward Patrick Kane is feeling rejuvenated and energized on the ice thanks to a “welcome change” to his game. After a slow start to the season, Kane has found his groove and is making a significant impact for his team.

Kane credits his recent success to a newfound confidence and a renewed focus on his training and preparation. He has been working closely with his coaches and teammates to fine-tune his skills and elevate his performance to new heights.

Fans of the Red Wings have taken notice of Kane’s improved play, with many praising his work ethic and determination. With his renewed passion for the game, Kane is poised to continue making a significant impact for the Red Wings as they push for a playoff spot.

Stay tuned to see what else Kane has in store as he continues to thrive on the ice with his “welcome change” to his game.

  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus Spreads Her Dramatic Wings

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Spreads Her Dramatic Wings

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is used to making people laugh. From Saturday Night Live to Seinfeld and Veep, the 63-year-old actor is best known for delivering dry one-liners and punchlines. But this year, she stepped into a very different role for Tuesday, Daina Oniunas-Pusić’s fantasy drama. In the film, Dreyfus plays Zora, a mother confronting the inevitable loss of her terminally ill 15-year-old daughter, Tuesday, played by Lola Petticrew. When Death, in the form of a macaw, visits Tuesday’s bedside, Zora must battle the exotic bird in order to keep her daughter alive. Here, Louis-Dreyfus talks about channeling loss and stepping into a magically surreal world.

Tuesday is definitely not a comedy. This would seem like a very unusual script to send to you, given your comedic background.

I did think, Why me? But I’m really grateful it was me, because it was an opportunity to do something completely outside my comfort zone. It was a very serious subject, although it has humor baked into it. The Eastern European fairy-tale quality of the script was very appealing. The thing that grabbed my heart was—spoiler alert!—the fact that the mother that I play would do anything to keep Death away, including eating Death. I love the symbolism of that.

    Because you’re a fighter?

    Yes, I am a fighter and I’m a mother.

Tonally, it must have felt like such a departure.

The tone was a challenge. I certainly made a lot of jokes between takes. But there’s an emotional investment that has to be in place. In my own life, I’ve had people very close to me die. I had to tap into all of that. There had to be a true dramatic authenticity while I was talking to this enormous bird. It was wacko.

What was it like having a bird as a scene partner?

The Bird of Death is played by Arinzé Kene. He is magnificent. He was on set with us when we were working, and he did a lot of the physicality of the bird. Then they animated around him. But I didn’t think of the bird as a bird. I thought of it as a being. So when I was having scenes with it, I was negotiating with somebody who had power that I needed to take away.

Have you gotten other offers for sadder or more serious roles of this nature?

No, I really have not. People usually come to me with comedic bits. But I would argue that the films that I’ve made with Nicole Holofcener have melancholy. Certainly, there’s dramas baked into her stories.

When you started auditioning in college, did you concentrate on comedy?

I auditioned for everything. When I was in college, I was cast on Saturday Night Live. I did theater in Chicago, but the theater was improv at the Second City and Practical Theatre Co.. I sort of fell into the comedy stuff, and it went on from there.

Were you always funny? Did you feel like a funny person growing up?

    Probably. Yeah.

    Are you good at charades?

Very. I love to play charades. I also like Celebrity. It’s a great game.

When you were growing up, who was your cinematic crush?

When I was little, I loved Barbra Streisand and Julie Andrews. As I got older, I loved Robert De Niro. I loved funny guys. I loved Gene Wilder, for Christ’s sake. Anyone funny.

    Do you get starstruck?

Yes. What happens is, I retreat. I get overcome sometimes. The first time I saw Meryl Streep at one of those crazy Hollywood parties, I was just goo-goo-gaga.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has long been known for her comedic chops, from her iconic roles on “Seinfeld” and “Veep.” But in recent years, the talented actress has been spreading her wings and exploring the world of drama.

Her performance in the critically acclaimed film “Downhill” showed a new side to Louis-Dreyfus, as she tackled complex emotions and relationships with grace and depth. The film may have been a departure from her comedic roots, but she proved that she is just as skilled at drama as she is at making us laugh.

Louis-Dreyfus has also been delving into more serious roles on the small screen, with her recent turn in the HBO series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” Her portrayal of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine has been met with praise from critics and fans alike, further solidifying her status as a versatile and talented actress.

It’s clear that Julia Louis-Dreyfus is not afraid to take risks and push herself as an actress, and we can’t wait to see where her dramatic journey takes her next.

  • SA vs Pak 2nd Test – WTC – Kwena Maphaka given a chance to spread his wings and ‘be the man for the team’

SA vs Pak 2nd Test – WTC – Kwena Maphaka given a chance to spread his wings and ‘be the man for the team’

Kwena Maphaka does not need to think of himself as being “on trial” when he becomes the youngest Test debutant for South Africa at Newlands on Friday. Maphaka will be 18 years and 270 days old at the time, not yet in possession of his final school results (which come out in about ten days’ time) and has just three first-class matches to his name.
“We know what his talent is about,” Temba Bavuma, South Africa’s Test captain, said on the eve of the game against Pakistan.
Those who watched the white-ball matches against Pakistan, where Maphaka reached speeds above 150kph, already know about some of it. Maphaka’s raw pace was on display when he hit Babar Azam on the glove in the third ODI and then rushed him into a pull shot off the next ball which Babar played to short midwicket. The match before that, his athletic instincts were on full display when he leapt up in his follow through to take a sharp catch to dismiss Mohammad Rizwan. He picked up 4 for 72 in that game.
Those who watched the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year might have seen all this coming. On some of South Africa’s less lively pitches, Maphaka picked up 21 wickets at an eyepopping average of 9.71. South Africa lost in the semi-final but Maphaka’s haul was not overtaken and he was named Player of the Tournament.
But there was one person who knew even before this year’s age-group tournament that Maphaka’s talent was extraordinary: South Africa’s Test coach Shukri Conrad. While working as national U-19 coach a couple of years ago, he remembers “seeing Kwena at the camp and I said to the selectors, ‘This kid’s going with us to the World Cup’. Everybody jumped up and said, ‘what are you talking about? He’s 15 years old’,” Conrad told ESPNcricinfo two days before the match. “I said to them that we might not reap the rewards at this World Cup but we’re definitely going to reap the rewards down the line.”

Maphaka was part of the South Africa squad that travelled to the U-19 World Cup in the Caribbean in 2022. He played three matches and took seven wickets and also had the opportunity to be mentored by the man who would become South Africa’s Test coach a year later. Then, Conrad included Maphaka in a South Africa A squad that toured Sri Lanka in June 2023. Maphaka made his first-class debut on that trip, before he had even played a domestic red-ball match, under Conrad’s watch. So it’s hardly surprising that Conrad brought Maphaka into the squad as soon as he had the opportunity to: once his school examinations were over (which is the reason he did not go on the away Test tours) and there was a vacancy in the attack.

“He seems like he wants to be the man for the team. He has the characteristics to at least to fulfil his potential. And I guess for us it’s to support him and make him feel free to continue being the person that he is”

    Temba Bavuma on Kwena Maphaka

With Gerald Coetzee and Wiaan Mulder injured at Kingsmead, Maphaka was brought into the Test squad in the Sri Lanka series but did not play at St George’s Park. Dane Paterson, a slower bowler who moves the ball off the seam, was preferred. Paterson took seven wickets and retained his place for Boxing Day, where allrounder Corbin Bosch debuted. But now, with Mulder back in and carded to bat as high as No. 3, Bosch has dropped out and though Paterson is desperately unlucky to miss out after 13 wickets in his last two Tests, the circumstances are ideal for Maphaka to debut.

“Kwena selection is on potential, more than anything. But obviously, he exudes talent and we wanted to go with an extra bit of pace as well,” Bavuma explained. “Unfortunately, a guy like Dane Paterson, who has been superb for us, misses out. So we’re quite excited for Kwena – also considering the fact that we’ve got a series on the line. We want to give an opportunity to a young guy, when there’s a consequence to it. Whatever happens from his point of view, from a performance point of view, it’ll put him in good stead.”

On eve of the match, it sounded like he may even be entrusted with the new ball alongside Kagiso Rabada. “I’m sure he’ll be looking forward to running in with KG over the next five days,” Bavuma said. “We’re super excited for the young talent.”

As captain, Bavuma will look to balance giving Maphaka a licence to simply do his thing with ensuring that he learns as much as possible from the experience. The message is that there is no pressure on him, but there is the opportunity to lay the groundwork for a long and successful career.

“With a guy like Kwena, you want to allow him to be as free as he can. You want to allow him to continue being the Kwena he is and to allow the exuberance of youth to come out,” Bavuma said. “More specifically with him, it’s a case of Kwena running and bowling as quickly as you can, allowing him to kind of just spread his wings. Obviously with him, he doesn’t have the foundation. A lot of us played first-class cricket, we were able to fail, come back and find a way. He’s just going to have to learn quite quickly but he has the talent that will make it a little bit easier for him. Also, he’s not on trial in this game. We know what his talent is about.”

Though Bavuma has not played a red-ball game with Maphaka before, they have shared the international stage in two ODIs and have trained together. From what Bavuma has seen, Maphaka “seems to have a good understanding of his game, especially at his age; he is a strong competitor as well and you can see it in all the other things that we do, even playing soccer”.

“He seems like he wants to be the man for the team,” Bavuma said. “He has the characteristics to at least to fulfil his potential. And I guess for us it’s to support him and make him feel free to continue being the person that he is.”

The second Test match between South Africa and Pakistan in the World Test Championship is just around the corner, and all eyes are on Kwena Maphaka.

Maphaka, the talented young all-rounder, has shown glimpses of his potential in the past, but now he has been given the chance to truly spread his wings and be the man for the team. With injuries to key players in the squad, Maphaka has been handed the responsibility of stepping up and making a mark in this crucial Test match.

This is the perfect opportunity for Maphaka to showcase his skills and prove his worth to the team. With his explosive batting and handy bowling, he has the ability to make a significant impact on the game and help South Africa secure a vital victory in the World Test Championship.

Fans are eagerly awaiting to see Maphaka in action and witness him rise to the occasion. Will he be able to deliver when it matters the most? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – Kwena Maphaka has the talent and potential to become a key player for South Africa in the future. Let’s cheer him on and hope for a stellar performance in the upcoming Test match. Go Maphaka, go! #SAvsPak #WTC #KwenaMaphaka

  • PREVIEW: Blue Jackets begin 2025 by hosting the Red Wings

PREVIEW: Blue Jackets begin 2025 by hosting the Red Wings

When it comes to measuring stick games, the Blue Jackets have fared well this season.

Columbus has 16 victories this year, and 10 of them have been against teams that made it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs a season ago. The latest came New Year’s Eve, as the Blue Jackets won a 4-3 shootout final over a team that’s made the postseason six straight years and won three of the last four Metropolitan Division titles.

Perhaps more important was the way the Blue Jackets did it. Carolina led 3-2 going into the third period, but the Blue Jackets played their best hockey in the final frame, equalized the score and earned just their second victory when trailing after two periods this season.

“I hope it’s a wonderful sign, obviously, moving forward,” head coach Dean Evason said. “We’ve handled adversity up to this point, and now you’re going to have to handle a lot more. But to do it against that team, such a good hockey club – Carolina is so good, put so much heat on us. We didn’t handle it in (some) areas, but at the end of the day we got the job done. We’re resilient. We stayed the course, we don’t panic on our bench, and that’s exciting for us.”

The victory moved Columbus to within two points of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference as the calendar turns to 2025, and there’s a lot of reasons to like the way the team is playing of late. The Blue Jackets have points in five of the last six games (4-1-1), as the team’s best players like top-line forwards Dmitri Voronkov, Sean Monahan and Kirill Marchenko and top defenseman Zach Werenski have been among the league’s top scorers in that span.

The next step is finding some consistency and perhaps some scoring balance in the lineup, but the most important part might be learning how to win and believing you can go toe-to-toe against the best. The Blue Jackets have made major strides in those categories this season, and they hope they can carry the momentum from the Carolina win into the new year.

“When you win games like this – you come back, you do it on home ice – those are fun, and those are the ones you have to try to build off of,” Monahan said.

Next up is taking on a Detroit team that the Blue Jackets will face March 1 in the Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series game in Ohio Stadium. Columbus has been excellent at home, posting a 12-4-3 record and leading the league with 76 goals scored at home (4.00 average).

Know The Foe: Detroit Red Wings

Head coach: Todd McLellan (First season)

    Team stats: Goals per game: 2.62 (28th) | Scoring defense: 3.24 (24th) | PP: 24.1 percent (9th) | PK: 69.6 percent (31st)

The narrative: After a historic 25-season streak of making the postseason, the Red Wings have failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs eight straight seasons. There were high hopes a young core mixed with veterans would keep that run from reaching nine years, but Detroit has scuffled through most of the season culminating in the firing of head coach Derek Lalonde on Dec. 26. New head man McLellan has skipped the team to two wins in his first three games while trying to bring the fun back to the Motor City.

Team leaders: The Red Wings have a keeper in Lucas Raymond, as the 22-year-old Swede who was taken fourth overall in the 2020 draft scored 31 goals last season and leads the squad with 15 goals and 38 points this year. Captain Dylan Larkin is next with a 13-16-29 line, while dangerous goal scorer Alex DeBrincat ties Raymond with 15 goals among his 28 points. Mortiz Seider leads the defense with 20 points on four goals and 16 assists, but he’s the only other Red Wing with at least 20 points as secondary scoring has been hard to come by.

Cam Talbot has started a team-high 18 games in net and is 6-9-2 with a 2.98 GAA and .906 save percentage. Alex Lyon (7-5-0, 2.83, .899) is the primary backup, while veteran Ville Husso has struggled and spent time in the minors this season.

What’s new: McLellan’s tenure started with a loss vs. Toronto, but the Red Wings have won consecutive home games by a 4-2 score over Washington and Pittsburgh. We’ll see the long-term impact of the coaching change, but the Red Wings have a hole to dig out of in the standings as they sit six points out of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Trending: Detroit swept the season series a year ago, as Columbus went 0-2-1 and gained its only point in an overtime loss March 19 at Nationwide Arena. The Blue Jackets went 17-5-1 against their northern neighbors from 2017-22 but are 1-4-1 the past two years.

Former CBJ: Tyler Motte has played 22 games for the Red Wings this year, and the wing has two goals on the campaign.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are set to kick off the new year by hosting the Detroit Red Wings at Nationwide Arena. The two teams will face off on January 2nd, marking the beginning of the 2025 season for both clubs.

The Blue Jackets will be looking to start the year on a high note as they aim to build upon their success from the previous season. With a roster filled with talented players, including stars like Alex Ovechkin and Pierre-Luc Dubois, Columbus will be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming season.

On the other hand, the Red Wings will be looking to turn things around after a disappointing season last year. Detroit has made some key offseason acquisitions and will be looking to make a statement in their first game of the year against their division rivals.

This matchup between the Blue Jackets and Red Wings is sure to be an exciting one, as both teams look to set the tone for the rest of the season. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as these two teams battle it out on the ice.

Dark Rock Elite features 7 high-performance copper heat pipes and 2 Silent Wings fans, specially designed for maximum air pressure and perfect airflow. As a result, this high-end cooler always keeps your CPU at peak performance, especially in heavily overclocked systems and demanding workstations.
2 Silent Wings 135mm PWM fans provide maximum airflow for unprecedented cooling. Although designed for performance, the fans are virtually inaudible at regular speeds. In Quiet Mode, the maximum noise is a mere 25.8dB(A). This is achieved with advanced fluid-dynamic bearings and smooth 6-pole fan motors.
The front fan can easily be adjusted in height, making Dark Rock Elite compatible with almost any configuration. Adjusting the fan is a breeze thanks to the innovative rail system, the fan position can be altered in 5 steps.
The Speed Switch allows you to choose between 2 modes, each affecting the maximum fan speed and PWM curve. Quiet Mode provides a maximum fan speed of 1500rpm and is the perfect choice for super quiet builds. Performance Mode allows the Silent Wings fans to spin up to 2000rpm and unleashes Dark Rock Elite’s full performance.
The top cover features ARGB LEDs that light up in endless colors, which can be configured with any ARGB controller. Combined with its distinctive design, Dark Rock Elite will become the highlight of any system. The special black coating with ceramic particles not only adds a visual highlight to the air cooler: it also enables a perfect transfer of heat.
Thanks to a nickel-plated base, Dark Rock Elite is compatible with liquid metal thermal grease such as DC2 Pro. The properties of the liquid metal compound combined with Dark Rock Elite allow high-end CPUs to perform at even higher levels.

The Red Wings will try to build on Sunday’s 4-2 victory over Washington, Todd McLellan’s first win in his second game as coach. They’ll put behind them a calendar year in which they failed to earn a playoff spot last season due to an 8-13-3 finish and fired coach Derek Lalonde last Thursday due to a disappointing start this season.

After allowing four or more goals in six consecutive games and seven-of-eight, the Red Wings tightened up defensively against the Capitals and got a 25-save performance from Alex Lyon.

Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane have provided much of their scoring lately. Dylan Larkin (no goals, 10 assists in 15 games) and Vladimir Tarasenko (no goals, two assists in 12 games) are looking to get untracked.

The Penguins are 10-4-1 in their past 15 following a rough start. Sidney Crosby leads the team with 40 points, including 10 goals.

These teams have split two games — Pittsburgh spoiled Detroit’s season-opener 6-3 on Oct. 10 and the Red Wings prevailed 3-2 on Simon Edvinsson’s overtime goal Nov. 13 in Pittsburgh.
