Wink Martindale Atlanta Falcons: Michigan DC reportedly interviewing
The Detroit Lions’ coordinators aren’t the only ones in this state getting NFL interviews.
Wink Martindale, Michigan football’s defensive coordinator, is now scheduled to interview with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday and the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday about vacancies for the same position, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
NFL on CBS’ Jonathan Jones also reported Martindale with interview with the Falcons.
Martindale did not immediately respond to a text looking for comment Tuesday afternoon.
Martindale, 61, took over as U-M’s defensive coordinator prior to the 2024 season when former DC Jesse Minter left alongside ex-head coach Jim Harbaugh to take over the Los Angeles Chargers and though things started slowly, they finished with a bang.
The man with more than two decades of NFL experience − from the Oakland Raiders (2004-08) and Denver Broncos (2009-10) to the Baltimore Ravens (2012-21) and New York Giants (2022-23) − came back to Ann Arbor to take over the No. 1 defense in the nation, but immediately lost the man he called his “Eric Weddle” when Rod Moore suffered a torn ACL during spring practice.
That, combined with a difficult schedule and first year coaches along the defensive line (Lou Esposito), linebackers (Brian Jean-Mary) and in the secondary (Lamar Morgan), not to mention the head coach (Sherrone Moore) and the immediate learning curve proved to be a bit too much.
After never allowing more than 24 points in a game last season, U-M surrendered 24 points or more in four of its first six games and though it escaped with a pair of fortunate victories − back-to-back three-point wins over USC and Minnesota − the team was floundering as it went 4-2 into the bye week.
MORE MICHIGAN FOOTBALL NEWS:Michigan football reportedly to add WR via transfer portal
Michigan lost three of its next four to fall to 5-5, but that’s when the defense came alive.
It started when Michigan held a potent Indiana attack to 20 points, then confidence grew with a 50-6 win over Northwestern. But the crowning moment of the season was when Martindale brought his unit − led by defensive linemen Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant and Josaiah Stewart − into Columbus and as three-touchdown underdogs, shocked the college football world with a 13-10 victory.
It was a defensive masterpiece for the ages, considering Michigan won a game where it didn’t have its best offensive player (Colston Loveland) a projected top-10 defensive draft pick (Will Johnson) and U-M’s offensive passing stat line read as follows: 9 of 16 for 62 yards and two interceptions.
Martindale’s unit shutdown a Buckeyes team now playing for a national championship, then decided to cap it off with a 19-13 hammering of Alabama. Again, Martindale’s group suffered one of the better offenses in the country and this time did so with its top four players sitting out for the NFL draft.
In the end, U-M’s finished No. 11 in total defense (308.4 yards per game) and No. 19 in scoring defense (19.9 points per game) despite playing four of the 12 teams in the College Football Playoff.
According to Martindale’s contract, should he leave for the NFL, he would need to pay U-M $350,000 as a buyout. Martindale signed a three-year contract on Feb. 14, 2024 which had him scheduled to make $2.3 million base salary in 2024, $2.5 million in 2025 and $2.7 million in 2026.
Despite losing a host of picks to the NFL draft (with Moore still to make up his mind), U-M felt it took momentum into the offseason on that side of the ball with Martindale at the helm. Now, it will see just how much pull the NFL still has.
The report also indicates the Cincinnati Bengals have interest in meeting with Martindale.

Wink Martindale Atlanta Falcons: Michigan DC reportedly interviewingAccording to reports, Wink Martindale, the current defensive coordinator for the University of Michigan, is set to interview for the Atlanta Falcons’ head coaching position. Martindale has been with the Wolverines since 2021, helping lead the team to a successful season.
Martindale’s aggressive defensive style and ability to motivate players have been key factors in his success at Michigan. He has previous NFL coaching experience, having served as the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens from 2018 to 2020.
If Martindale were to be hired by the Falcons, it would mark a significant change for the team, as they look to rebuild and improve after a disappointing season. Fans are hopeful that Martindale’s leadership and defensive expertise could help turn the Falcons into a winning team once again.

#Wink #Martindale #Atlanta #Falcons #Michigan #reportedly #interviewingSherrone Moore doesn’t want to lose Michigan DC Wink Martindale to NFL
The Michigan Wolverines have hit home runs with their defensive coordinator hires in recent years in Mike Macdonald, Jesse Minter and now Wink Martindale. Macdonald left to become defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens and is now the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, Minter left to become the Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator and now there’s a chance Martindale leaves to become an NFL defensive coordinator once again.
Martindale interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons and Indianapolis Colts this week and the Cincinnati Bengals are reportedly interested in Martindale as well. With that amount of intrigue, it feels like a coin toss as to whether Martindale sticks at Michigan for a second year or heads back to the pros.
On Friday afternoon, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore was asked about Martindale and how he’s receiving NFL interest. Moore clearly doesn’t want Martindale to depart, but also realizes that it’s a possibility.
“He’s a great coach. Obviously, when your team has success at some points, especially on defense and the way they played, those opportunities are going to come. I always welcome our guys with opportunities, but don’t want to lose him,” Moore said Friday, per MLive’s Ryan Zuke. “Don’t want him to go anywhere. Want him to be here in Michigan, and I think he does, too. But he has opportunities that he has to look at.”
If Martindale does leave, Moore and Michigan will be prepared. Michigan has a list of candidates ready.
“I think you have to,” Moore said. “You have to have a list of people that you would look at if that were to take place, and you got to have that at all positions. It’s not just there, it’s any position. But we’ll take those steps if we need to.”
There’s no timetable in terms of whether Martindale stays or leaves, but we’ll be following this one closely every step of the way.
Sherrone Moore, the offensive line coach for the University of Michigan football team, has made it clear that he does not want to lose defensive coordinator Wink Martindale to the NFL. Martindale, who has been with the Wolverines for just one season, has been rumored to be a candidate for several NFL coaching positions. In a recent interview, Moore expressed his admiration for Martindale’s coaching abilities and the impact he has had on the Michigan defense. “Wink is a phenomenal coach and a great leader for our defense,” Moore said. “Losing him would be a huge blow to our team, and I really hope he chooses to stay with us.”
Martindale has not yet made a decision about his future, but Moore and the rest of the Michigan coaching staff are hopeful that he will remain with the Wolverines for at least another season. “We have a special group of players and coaches here at Michigan, and I know Wink is a big part of that,” Moore said. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he decides to stay and continue to build something special with us.”

#Sherrone #Moore #doesnt #lose #Michigan #Wink #Martindale #NFLSteady Droppin’ Dimes – Will Wink jump to the NFL?
Sam Webb: “These are great points though because this seems like it’s make or break for Zach Taylor, man.”
Devin Gardner: “Oh yeah. Especially this year, after this year because your quarterback pretty much did everything he could, and y’all still didn’t sniff the playoffs or championship. Because nobody’s going to blame Joe Burrow, right? And the fact that you can’t figure this out for Joe Burrow as an offensive coach, that’s a problem.”
Sam Webb: “Yeah, and didn’t they put the tag on T. Higgins? So, this is a contract year for T. Higgins?’
Devin Gardner: “And T. Higgins said that he’s comfortable taking less money to stay with Cincinnati too though. Which I don’t like.”
Sam Webb: “But Jamar Chase… “
Devin Gardner: “Oh, that bank is broken. It’s already broken. They better pay him right this second because it ain’t doing nothing but going up. The way he played, they couldn’t do anything with that boy. He is a monster. Oh, my goodness, he’s so good. They better pay him right (now. They needed to pay him yesterday because, and whatever he asked for, just give it to him because it’s only going up.”
Daniel Horton: “We grow athletes like that on the West Bank of Louisiana, by the way. So, it- West Bank of New Orleans, you feel me?”
Sam Webb: “What’s crazy is, me and Michigan almost had it. Michigan almost had it. Anyway, I digress. We almost always got it; we almost always had it.”
Devin Gardner: “Almost always”
Sam Webb: “I think I pulled up the interview I had with Jarmar Chase.”
Devin Gardner: “I’m still mad at you for telling me that I got Sammy Watkins to come, but then he didn’t. “
Sam Webb: “Yeah, he did. He was committed, then they fired Rich Rod.”
Daniel Horton: “I had Patrick Beverly locked up and he didn’t come. Michigan got so many misses in football and basketball that the fans don’t even know about.”
Sam Webb: “Hey man, T Green wasn’t gonna let that happen. He wasn’t gonna let that happen. “
Sam Webb: “Hey man, there are all kinds of stories. Yeah, Pat Bev was close to coming too. He was close to coming to Michigan. But I digress, getting back to Wink. That’s the consideration with some of these jobs. If you go to the Bengals, first, will the Bengals pay? They’ve been said to be notoriously cheap. Will they go into that $3.5 million dollar range? Will they reach that threshold? Desperation might make them do it. It might make them go past that bar. And if they’re willing to, if you’re Wink, are you willing to (take that job) understanding that it might be a one-year endeavor?”

Michigan DC Wink Martindale recaps the Ohio State game plan, the defense’s improvements, impression of QBs
TAMPA, Fla. — Michigan football shocked Ohio State to conclude the regular season, with the Wolverines’ defense holding the high-powered Buckeyes’ offense to 10 points in a road upset.
A month after The Game, DC Wink Martindale spoke with media for the first time since coordinating the unit’s effort in Columbus. He discussed how hits on QB Will Howard changed the trajectory of the game, and how the defense’s performance was a continuation of improvements that began much earlier in the season. During his press conference ahead of the ReliaQuest Bowl, Martindale also named players who have impressed him in recent practices, and he offered his early impressions of QBs Bryce Underwood and Mikey Keene.
Here is everything Wink Martindale said:
Wink Martindale on the defensive line against Alabama:
I think the guys that were backing up earlier in the year, they’re gonna get a lot more playing time. And that’s gonna be the challenge for those guys is guys that are getting six to ten reps a game are gonna go up to 30, 40 reps. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle that. We’ll have a lot of the younger guys that haven’t had a chance to play, they’ll get in the mix and be able to get in that rotation.
Wink Martindale on Rayshaun Benny being the anchor for the DL right now:
Of course he is. Yeah, Rayshaun is.
Wink Martindale on the younger defensive lineman who have impressed him:
I think that Trey’s had a nice bowl prep. Enow’s had a nice bowl prep. Ike, he continues to grow in his role. So it’s gonna be exciting to see and fun to watch.
Wink Martindale on the Ohio State game plan:
Well, we were really confident in the game plan. Our whole message was all week, let’s take them to the deep end in the fourth quarter. We knew then we could take over the game defensively.
So I know there’s been a lot of speculation about this and that, this and that. But all credit to the players. The game always has been, always will be about them. I came out with that on Twitter because that’s what it was.
We just physically outplayed them. And guys, when your best players are playing their best, that’s when you have a lot of success. And you saw that with Makari’s hit on the quarterback, and Ernest’s hit on the quarterback that was sort of hidden that no one saw because it was on a read sweep, but he got hit pretty good. And after that, he started getting a little nervous back there.
So the guys had a great rush plan. Lou had a great rush plan. And Kevin with the four up front. LaMar and BJ did a great job with the coverage aspect of it. Just sticking to our game plan. And it was a lot of fun to watch.

Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale recaps the Ohio State game plan and the defense’s improvementsAfter a tough loss to Ohio State, Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale took to the podium to discuss the game plan against the Buckeyes and the improvements he saw from his defense.
Martindale acknowledged that Ohio State’s offense was tough to contain, especially with their explosive playmakers. He explained that the game plan was to try and disrupt their rhythm and force turnovers, but ultimately the Buckeyes were able to execute at a high level.
Despite the loss, Martindale was pleased with the improvements he saw from his defense throughout the game. He noted that the players were communicating well, making adjustments on the fly, and tackling more effectively. These are all positive signs moving forward, as the Wolverines look to finish the season strong.
In addition to discussing the defense’s performance, Martindale also shared his impressions of the quarterbacks. He praised their competitiveness and leadership on the field, and expressed confidence in their ability to bounce back from this loss.
Overall, Martindale remains optimistic about the rest of the season and believes that the defense will continue to improve and make a strong push towards the postseason.

TAMPA, Fla. — With his back to Jesuit High School’s Alumni Field, standing in his signature cutoff T-shirt and sunglasses, Michigan football defensive coordinator Wink Martindale made sure to thank a reporter for a question.
Saturday marked four weeks to the day since the Wolverines‘ 13-10 upset victory over then-No. 2 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio but it was the first time Martindale had a chance to talk about his unit’s masterpiece since that day.
“I’m so glad (you asked),” Martindale joked, after he’d answered a few questions about the Wolverines’ preparations for Tuesday’s ReliaQuest Bowl. “We were really confident in the game plan. The heart of the message all week was, ‘Take ’em to the deep end in the fourth quarter.’ And then we knew we could take over the game defensively. … We just physically outplayed them. When your best players are playing their best, that’s when you have a lot of success.
“We felt good going into the game of how we were going to attack them, and give them some different looks they weren’t used to, and when they started getting used to it, we went to a different look. And it kept them guessing (and) reaching the entire game.”

The victory sent the OSU fanbase into a tailspin. Much of that happened because Martindale’s unit limited the Buckeyes to season lows in points (10), yards (252) and first downs (16).
Of course, the Buckeyes’ next performance gave a boost to the standard set by U-M, as Ohio State hammered Tennessee by 25 points in Columbus to open the College Football Playoff.
“(The Buckeyes) have a very talented group,” Martindale said Saturday. “It was just our day that day and I’m glad we had it.”
Although Michigan’s crowning moment came in Columbus, the Wolverines had been surging for a month beforehand.
The Wolverines have allowed just one touchdowns in their past 12 quarters and just two in the past 14, dating back to the third and fourth quarters on Nov. 2 against No. 1 Oregon. That’s when, in Martindale’s mind, he felt his unit truly start to click.
“Probably the second half of Oregon and I think it just kept building,” Martindale reflected. “Indiana, I thought we played really well. They have 18 yards in the second half. But the thing that the players finally realized was when you hit a quarterback like we were hitting quarterbacks — Northwestern, Indiana — those quarterbacks, once they start getting hit, they’re a different quarterback. And I think that that was one of the biggest lessons defensively that they learned.”
There’s no doubt the finish to the regular season changed the lens through which the year will be viewed. In mid-November, when U-M was sitting at 5-5, the possibility of missing a bowl game and a loss to Ohio State felt imminent. Even during OSU week, the Wolverines were three-TD underdogs.
Not that Martindale could acknowledge that.
“That’d probably be illegal if I looked at the spread,” Martindale quipped Saturday. “But that’s what I heard.”

Instead, the Wolverines got their fourth consecutive win over OSU for the first time in more than three decades. It capped a regular season that, despite its disappointments, saw wins over both rivals (Michigan State and OSU) as well as victories in two other trophy games, against Minnesota (Little Brown Jug) and Northwestern (the George Jewett Trophy).
Martindale said 2024 is a year he won’t soon forget.
“It was one of the most rewarding experiences that I’ve had personally in coaching just because of where we came from,” he said. “So I think that the future is bright, and I’m looking forward to it.”
Crippen to return for fifth year
A few hours after linebacker Ernest Hausmann announced his return officially, Saturday morning at practice, center Greg Crippen posted online that he would return to Ann Arbor for a fifth season.
“I will be coming back to Michigan next year to help bring home another National Championship,” Crippen posted on social media. “Being a Michigan man is about loyalty, brotherhood, and excellence. I’m committed to this team, to this University, and to leaving everything on the field every single day.”
Dominick Giudice, a converted defensive lineman, won the starting center job out of fall camp and started the first five games. But Crippen — who came to Michigan as a four-star recruit out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida — took over the starting job for the final seven games this season.
Giudice has since transferred to Missouri while Crippen is now one of four offensive linemen with starting experience expected to return for the Wolverines; joining would-be sixth-year tackle Jeff Persi, fifth-year Giovanni El-Hadi and redshirt sophomore Evan Link.
Michigan will lose more than 70 games of experience with the departures of Myles Hinton and Josh Priebe, so the return of the 6-foot-4, 309-pound offensive lineman with 27 games played is much needed for Grant Newsome’s group.

The Michigan football defense showcased defensive coordinator Wink Martindale’s potential against Ohio State in their recent matchup. Despite the Wolverines falling to the Buckeyes, the defense displayed an aggressive and disruptive style of play that kept them in the game for much of the contest.Martindale’s aggressive play-calling and creative blitz packages were on full display as Michigan consistently pressured Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud and forced turnovers. The defense also did a solid job of limiting big plays and keeping the Buckeyes’ high-powered offense in check for much of the game.
While the Wolverines ultimately fell short, the performance of the defense under Martindale’s leadership showed the potential for this unit to be a force to be reckoned with in the future. With continued development and execution, Michigan’s defense could become one of the best in the country under Martindale’s guidance.
Overall, the Michigan football defense’s performance against Ohio State showcased Wink Martindale’s ceiling as a defensive coordinator and provided hope for the future of the program. With continued growth and improvement, the Wolverines’ defense could become a dominant force in college football.
