  • Arne Slot’s Liverpool are the real deal, but Man City won’t get near a second European crown! Winners and losers of UEFA’s polarising inaugural Champions League league phase

The competition’s new format has thrown up plenty of drama so far, even if the stakes didn’t feel quite as high as previous years’ group stages

So there we have it. After five gruelling months and 144 games, including 18 in one night on Wednesday, the inaugural Champions League league phase is finally over.

The final matchday certainly delivered on the entertainment front, with 64 goals smashed in, including five in Liverpool’s clash with PSV in Eindhoven, six in Aston Villa’s home win over Celtic, and seven in Lille’s demolition of Feyenoord. “It was a little bit chaotic at times because there were goals going in everywhere,” former Rangers striker Ally McCoist said on TNT Sports. “I don’t think I would be able to watch just the one game in my house, on my sofa, ever again. It was sensational.”

It’s difficult to argue with that assessment, but the journey beforehand was a real slog. We still have another 16 games to get through before the round of 16, too, with the play-off knockout round set to be played in mid-February.

Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille and Villa don’t have to worry about that; they are automatically through after finishing in the top eight. But a host of other huge clubs underperformed as the overall competitiveness levels on the elite European stage dropped significantly.

The argument over whether the new format can be considered an immediate success will very much depend on allegiances, and with that in mind, GOAL brings you the winners and losers from the 2024-25 league phase…

Arne Slot’s Liverpool have been on fire in the inaugural Champions League league phase, showcasing their dominance and proving themselves as serious contenders for European glory. With their attacking prowess and solid defense, they have proven that they are the real deal and a force to be reckoned with in the competition.

On the other hand, Manchester City have not been as impressive, struggling to find their rhythm and consistency in the group stages. Despite their strong squad and talented players, they have fallen short in their performances and it seems unlikely that they will be able to challenge for a second European crown this season.

The winners of the league phase have been teams like Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea, who have all shown their class and quality in their performances. These teams have been able to navigate through tough groups and secure their spots in the knockout stages, setting themselves up for a potential deep run in the competition.

On the other hand, teams like Barcelona, Manchester United, and Juventus have been the losers of the league phase, failing to live up to expectations and struggling to secure their spots in the knockout stages. These teams will need to regroup and improve if they want to have any chance of making a run in the competition.

Overall, the inaugural Champions League league phase has been filled with exciting matchups, surprising results, and standout performances. As we head into the knockout stages, it will be interesting to see which teams will rise to the occasion and which teams will falter under the pressure. One thing is for sure, Arne Slot’s Liverpool are looking like serious contenders, while Manchester City will have a tough road ahead if they want to secure a second European crown.

  • College basketball winners, losers: Auburn. Houston win big

In the unpredictability that is the SEC, one team reigns supreme above all.

It was ugly and brutal, but in the battle of heavyweights, Auburn got past Tennessee 53-51 in one of the most-anticipated games of the college basketball season. And it lived up to the billing.

Those that love offense probably had a hard time watching what transpired inside Neville Arena, where every single point was earned in a physical 40 minutes; both teams each shot 31% from the field and less than 20% from the 3-point line. While far from pretty − including some questionable decisions from the referees − it truly was two of the best teams in the country showing what makes them such stalwarts.

    Winners:
    1. Auburn: The Tigers pulled off a huge upset by defeating the number one ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs in a thrilling overtime game. This win solidified Auburn’s status as a top contender in college basketball this season.

    2. Houston: The Cougars continue to impress with a dominant win over Texas Tech, showcasing their depth and talent on both ends of the court. Houston is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the NCAA tournament.

    Losers:
    None mentioned in this post.

  • Prediction: These 2 “Magnificent Seven” Stocks Will Be AI’s Biggest Winners by 2030 (Hint: Neither One Is Nvidia)

Artificial intelligence (AI) has garnered so much attention over the past couple of years. Experts believe this is a game-changing technology that will impact virtually all industries one day. Investors, unsurprisingly, want to get in on the action.

Nvidia (NVDA 8.93%) has been the standout performer of the AI revolution. Its shares have absolutely skyrocketed, rising 2,270% in just the past five years. As of Jan. 22, this is the world’s most valuable company with a market cap of $3.6 trillion.

There’s no doubt Nvidia deserves credit for how well it’s positioned in the industry. But looking out five years to 2030, I believe two other “Magnificent Seven” stocks will end up being AI’s biggest winners.

    Picks and shovels

Nvidia sells graphics processing units that support AI infrastructure. It has a monopoly position in the market for data center chips, its top business line, which generated 88% of company revenue in the fiscal third quarter of 2025 (ended Oct. 27). That figure was up 112% year over year, demonstrating insatiable demand for these powerful chips.

This business has become the premier way to invest in the AI trend. That’s because it’s a picks-and-shovels play, benefiting from the growth of the overall industry.

But there are some red flags hiding in plain sight. Nvidia deals with customer concentration. It’s believed that a handful of companies, a list that probably includes Amazon, Alphabet (GOOGL 1.82%) (GOOG 1.70%), Meta Platforms (META 2.19%), and Microsoft, account for a sizable portion of revenue.

The issue, though, is that these so-called hyperscalers are all working on their own chips to power their own AI applications. They have the cash and technical know-how to integrate upstream, which could seriously hurt demand for Nvidia in the future.

Additionally, investors need to think about what happens in an economic downturn. Spending on technology is such a huge part of the economy that there will surely be a major pullback in a recessionary scenario. Nvidia would likely take a hit in this situation, which leads to sizable downside for what is an expensive stock.

    Billions of people

The two businesses that I believe will be AI’s top winners by 2030 are Alphabet and Meta Platforms. These are already dominant enterprises that each serve billions of users, which is a key advantage. This supports the view that AI success stories might mostly come from companies that have long been thriving, letting the technology enhance their offerings.

Having a massive user base provides an immediate audience to constantly introduce AI features to, with instant feedback. This can inform further product upgrades and iterations.

And while Nvidia’s revenue is concentrated in a relatively small number of customers, both Alphabet and Meta each have millions of customers using their ad platforms to target users. Not having customer concentration is a positive trait.

Alphabet and Meta possess powerful network effects. Google Search and YouTube get better as more people use these services. The same is true of Meta’s social media apps.

There aren’t many businesses as financially sound as these two, either. Both generate billions of dollars in free cash flow each quarter, allowing them to operate with strong balance sheets that facilitate aggressive growth investments.

Having access to a massive amount of data to train AI models is critical to improve their functionality. Here’s where Alphabet and Meta shine. They might have the two largest data repositories on the face of the planet, ranging from search queries to social interactions to even video, with Alphabet’s YouTube and Meta’s Reels, for example.

Both Alphabet and Meta shares trade at forward price-to-earnings ratios ranging from 50% to 55% cheaper than Nvidia stock. This creates greater upside, positioning them well to be AI’s biggest winners this decade.

Suzanne Frey, an executive at Alphabet, is a member of The Motley Fool’s board of directors. John Mackey, former CEO of Whole Foods Market, an Amazon subsidiary, is a member of The Motley Fool’s board of directors. Randi Zuckerberg, a former director of market development and spokeswoman for Facebook and sister to Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is a member of The Motley Fool’s board of directors. Neil Patel and his clients have no position in any of the stocks mentioned. The Motley Fool has positions in and recommends Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Nvidia. The Motley Fool recommends the following options: long January 2026 $395 calls on Microsoft and short January 2026 $405 calls on Microsoft. The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy.

Prediction: These 2 “Magnificent Seven” Stocks Will Be AI’s Biggest Winners by 2030 (Hint: Neither One Is Nvidia)

As artificial intelligence continues to revolutionize industries across the globe, investors are eager to pinpoint the companies that are poised to benefit the most from this transformative technology. While Nvidia has long been considered a leader in AI, there are two lesser-known stocks that are poised to outperform even the most optimistic projections by 2030.

The first of these “Magnificent Seven” stocks is Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL). Google’s parent company has been investing heavily in AI research and development, and its deep pockets and vast troves of data give it a competitive edge in the race to dominate the AI landscape. From self-driving cars to natural language processing, Alphabet’s AI initiatives are paving the way for a future where machines can think and learn like humans.

The second stock on our list is Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN). While Amazon is best known for its e-commerce empire, the company has quietly been building a formidable AI infrastructure that powers everything from its recommendation algorithms to its delivery drones. With its vast reach and resources, Amazon is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for AI-powered solutions in industries ranging from healthcare to logistics.

While Nvidia will undoubtedly continue to play a significant role in the AI revolution, investors would be wise to keep an eye on these two “Magnificent Seven” stocks as they are poised to be the biggest winners in the AI boom of the next decade.

  • WWE Raw Results, Winners And Grades On January 27, 2025

WWE Raw in Atlanta advertised the return of Logan Paul, who declared for the 2025 Royal Rumble Match. Raw also advertised hometown hero and WWE champion Cody Rhodes, a WWE World Tag Team Title match between the War Raiders and the Judgment Day and Sami Zayn’s latest attempt to beat Drew McIntyre.

Logan Paul, GUNTHER And Seth Rollins Face Off

GUNTHER and Seth Rollins had a standard babyface-heel faceoff, but this segment really leveled up when Logan Paul arrived. This man got so much heat.

While getting booed loudly and receiving “you suck!” chants, Paul screamed over the Atlanta crowd. Paul then reminded Rollins and GUNTHER that these passionate reactions were attention.

Paul declared for the Royal Rumble. GUNTHER said he hopes Paul wins because he wants to embarrass Logan Paul at WrestleMania. Not much actually happened during this segment, but it was very loud and heated.

    Opening Segment Grade: B+

    War Raiders Def. Judgment Day

Early in the match, JD McDonagh smacked the back of his head against the announce table after a moonsault. It was a very scary spot. Cole and McAfee spent the rest of the match putting over JD. They were in awe as to how he kept going. Even when JD got back on the apron, fans cheered him out of respect.

The commentary team continued to put over JD’s big head as he connected with headbutts on his opponents. At one point, Erik hit a knee to the back of JD’s head.

The Judgment Day just came up short, and the War Raiders won with the War Machine. This felt like JD’s coming out party.

WWE World Tag Team Title Match Grade: A-

    Rey Mysterio Def. Xavier Woods

Xavier Woods reserved seats for his family, but they didn’t show up…yet.

Woods followed in Kofi’s footsteps with his new gear: Black jeans and fist tape.

Woods’ family finally showed up, but revealed they were wearing “New Day Sucks” t-shirts. The distraction was enough to cost Woods the match.

Woods and Kofi losing does not feel like they’re getting jobbed out. It feels like part of a bigger story where the New Day will eventually look in the mirror and realize they made a mistake by turning on Big E. I could see a reunion as soon as WrestleMania.

Rey Mysterio vs. Xavier Woods Grade: B

    Jey Uso Yeets Live

Jey Uso’s entrance lasted several minutes and was lit as ever in Atlanta. In attendance were Atlanta rappers Killer Mike, Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, 2 Chainz and Quavo, who accompanied Uso to the ring with the Smoking Skull belt.

Good thing Jey Uso didn’t have to wrestle, because this was a lot of yeeting. While cutting his promo, he seemed a bit winded and I don’t blame him. This was a good workout for the conditioning he’ll need in the Royal Rumble Match.

Uso vowed to win the Royal Rumble and get his revenge on GUNTHER, something I think is more realistic than it sounds given how stacked the Royal Rumble is.

    Jey Uso Segment Grade: B

Morgan And Rodriguez Def. Naomi And Belair

After being on top of the women’s division and all over TV, Liv Morgan is in a transitional phase headed into WrestleMania. She didn’t even receive and entrance.

Cole noted Jade Cargill eliminated Naomi in last year’s Royal Rumble. He also pointed out that Liv Morgan had finished as the runner-up in the last two Royal Rumble matches.

Bianca hit Liv Morgan with 17 punches and the crowd counted along to every one of them.

Dirty Dom tried to get out of the doghouse with a distraction. For his troubles, Belair hit a dive on Dom to the outside. The led to a two-on-one advantage where Rodriguez slammed Naomi on the apron, leading to a Morgan win.

After shouting out Georgia Championship Wrestling and WCW, Michael Cole put himself over as the only commentator to be undefeated at WrestleMania. Of course, this also happened in Atlanta. Pat McAfee went onto roast Cole’s gear and weight at WrestleMania 27. They also showed footage of Cole’s botched handshake with Quavo from earlier in the night.

Morgan and Rodriguez vs. Belair and Naomi Grade: B+

Paul Heyman Reveals WWE 2K25 Cover

Paul Heyman appeared to reveal the cover of WWE 2K25. Roman Reigns was on the cover, as was teased on the January 6 Raw.

Paul Heyman called himself the one behind the one in 29-1. Heyman name-dropped Elon Musk, saying when Musk colonizes Mars, Roman Reigns will be the best on that planet, too.

Heyman, who was blowing up during this promo worse than Jey Uso from earlier, called the Royal Rumble field “Roman wannabes.” Suspiciously, he did not mention CM Punk, and CM Punk did not interrupt him. Drew McIntyre did.

Fans chanted “we want Roman” as soon as Drew began to speak. They also chanted “we don’t care!” as he ran down Reigns.

McIntyre told Heyman to warn “his boy” that he’s coming for him. Heyman said he’d let Roman Reigns know, but Drew said he wasn’t talking about Reigns. He was talking about CM Punk.

    Paul Heyman Reveal Grade: B

    Drew McIntyre Def. Sami Zayn

Early in the match, McIntyre taunted Sami Zayn about his record against him. 10-0.

Despite the “we don’t care” chants from earlier, there were dueling chants of “let’s go Sami/let’s go Drew!”

Sami Zayn was bleeding from the nose the hard way. Not to be outdone (though he was outdone by JD earlier in the night), Drew McIntyre missed a Claymore Kick and landed on the table where he hit the back of his head.

I have a feeling that Zayn will get a measure of revenge by eliminating McIntyre at the Royal Rumble.

McIntyre won with his feet on the ropes. 11-0. After the match, Drew continued to beat on Sami, but Cody Rhodes made the save. Owens attacked Rhodes as Owens and McIntyre beat Cody down. Then, for the second week in a row, Sami Zayn hit a Helluva Kick on a babyface. This time, on Cody Rhodes. KO was pleased.

WWE Raw Main Event Grade: B

CM Punk And Cody Rhodes Face Off

With the two world titles hanging above, Rhodes cut an impassioned promo after the match and before WWE Raw went off the air. Rhodes was then interrupted by CM Punk.

Punk gave Cody a pep talk. He said he’s Cody’s friend, and because of a promise Punk made to Dusty Rhodes, he’ll always be Cody’s friend. Punk said the world championship changes you for the worse, just as it did when he was around Day 300 of his historic world title reign.

Cody called back to his segment with Punk last year before the Royal Rumble, where Punk quietly predicted The Rock would try to take his spot. Cody then asked Prescient Punk what’s going to happen next. Punk said he’d win the Royal Rumble and take Cody’s title, thereby stabbing him in the front. This faceoff wasn’t nearly as good as their segment from last year, but it did the trick.

CM Punk and Cody Rhodes Faceoff Grade: B-

WWE Raw Results, Winners And Grades On January 27, 2025

The January 27, 2025 edition of WWE Raw was action-packed and full of surprises. Here are the results, winners, and grades for the night:

    – In the opening match, The Usos defeated The Viking Raiders in a hard-hitting tag team match. Grade: B+

Australian Open prize money: Women’s and men’s singles winners

In 2025, the singles champions at Melbourne Park will take home a whopping $3.5 million.

This is a $350,000 increase on last year’s offering.

Runners-up will also head home considerably richer, as they are set to earn $1.9 million.

The Australian Open has provided equal prize money to men’s and women’s players since 2001.

Australian Open prize money: Mixed, men’s and women’s doubles winners

There is significantly less prize money on offer for doubles winners compared to their singles counterparts.

Regardless, the $810,000 pay packet for the men’s and women’s champion teams is nothing to be sneezed at.

Runners-up will earn just over half that figure – $440,000.

In the mixed doubles, the winning pair will receive $175,000, while the second-placed duo will make $97,750.

All doubles prize money is per team, meaning the winnings are split.

The Australian Open culminates this weekend with the two singles champions set to be crowned at Melbourne Park. The female winner will be handed the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup while the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup will go to the men’s champion.

In 2024, it was Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner who left Australia as the two champions.

Sabalenka retained her title from 2024, while Sinner landed his first Grand Slam win, before going on to also prevail at the US Open later in the year.

Both stars earned more than £1.6million for their successes, but the prize fund has been increased this time around. It follows tournament organisers announcing the overall prize pot was being increased to £49m, an 11.56 per cent increase on last year.

Whoever wins the finals this weekend will be handed just short of £1.8m, an 11.11 per cent rise on 2024. The two runners-up will have the consolation of a cheque for £966,000.

But it’s not just the individual events that conclude this weekend. The men’s and ladies doubles finals also take place, with the winning pairings set to receive £405,660.

The mixed doubles isn’t quite so lucrative, with victory worth £87,643. And the figures signify a staggering rise over the last 25 years, with the overall prize fund in 2001 a mere £7m.

The subject of prize money down under hit the headlines last week following a heartwarming gesture from American player Taylor Fritz. The American went out in the third round after losing to Gael Monfils.

But he pledged to donate £67k, the prize for winning his first-round march, to help the Los Angeles fire relief efforts. And he appeared to urge his fellow professionals to follow suit.

“It’s really the least I could do,” he said. “Southern California’s my home and LA was my home for a very long time so I’m just doing what I can do to help. I would encourage anyone else who can donate to help too because a lot of people really need help.”

Daniil Medvedev however, was forced to hand his winnings over for very different reasons. After his second-round defeat to American Learner Tien, he was hit with a £54,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The Australian Open is one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world, attracting top players from around the globe to compete for the coveted title. But aside from the glory of winning, one of the biggest draws for players is the prize money.

So, how much do the winners of the Australian Open final earn? In 2021, the winners of the men’s and women’s singles finals took home a whopping $2.75 million each. That’s a significant increase from previous years, demonstrating the tournament’s commitment to rewarding its champions.

In addition to the prize money, winners also receive a prestigious trophy and the satisfaction of knowing they have triumphed over some of the best players in the world. It’s no wonder that the Australian Open continues to be a favorite among both players and fans.

So, if you’re a tennis fan or just curious about the financial rewards of winning a Grand Slam tournament, keep an eye on the Australian Open final and see who walks away with the big prize.

  • Fans react to Ryan Seacrest’s fall during ‘Wheel of Fortune’ winner’s celebration: ‘You good, Ryan?’

A last-second win in the bonus round by a recent “Wheel of Fortune” contestant knocked Ryan Seacrest off his feet.

The host wasn’t quite ready for the level of excitement from contestant Daniel after he nailed “Guppies” as the solution in the bonus round, as seen in the Jan. 21 episode of the game show. He only had the letters “G” “E” and “S” to work with, and he guessed correctly with one second remaining.

An overjoyed Daniel bear-hugged Seacrest while moving forward, which sent the host tumbling to the floor.

“Oh my gosh!” Thomas said after seeing Seacrest hit the ground.

“I’m good, I’m good,” Seacrest said as Daniel helped him up.

Seacrest then revealed that Daniel had won $40,000 for solving the puzzle for a total haul of $71,950 from the episode.

Announcer Jim Thornton had some fun with the moment, saying “Daniel, easy on our host, but celebrate with $40,000!”

    Daniel then apologized to Seacrest.

“I’m so sorry. Did I make you fall?” he said.

Seacrest jokingly kept his distance from Daniel when announcing his total prize money.

The host then asked Daniel how he was able to do that in the last second.

“Push you over or solve the puzzle?” Daniel asked.

Seacrest also commented on the fall in a quick moment with co-host Vanna White released by the show.

“Pick me up, throw me over, tackle me,” Seacrest said. “I’m totally fine with it.”

The show shared the moment on Instagram and YouTube.

“Bookmarking this video for when we see an influx of people tackling Ryan in the show… ” the Instagram caption reads.

Fans also enjoyed the impromptu celebration.

“You good, Ryan?” one YouTube commenter wrote.

“That was so wholesome! You sure you’re okay, Ryan? ” one commented on Instagram.

“I don’t know which I’m more impressed by, the solve or the tackle lol,” another wrote on Instagram.

“That was incredible!! And the guy getting the puzzle was cool too. I hope you are okay, Ryan!” another fan commented on Instagram.
