  • Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic wins FDA approval for chronic kidney disease


    The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved Novo Nordisk‘s Ozempic to treat chronic kidney disease in patients who also have Type 2 diabetes, expanding the use of the wildly popular injection in the U.S. 

    The drug is already widely used and covered to treat Type 2 diabetes. The FDA’s decision means Ozempic can now be used to reduce the risk of kidney disease worsening, kidney failure, and death from cardiovascular disease in patients with both chronic kidney disease and diabetes.

    The decision could transform how doctors treat patients with chronic kidney disease, which involves a gradual loss of kidney function and is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. Around 37 million American adults are living with chronic kidney disease, according to Novo Nordisk.

    Diabetes is a key risk factor for kidney disease. Roughly 40% of Type 2 diabetes patients have the condition, which can cause additional sickness such as increased risk of cardiovascular problems and death, Novo Nordisk said.

    “All chronic kidney disease is progressive. It’s a year-on-year, relentless decline in renal function,” Stephen Gough, Novo Nordisk’s global chief medical officer, said in an interview, referring to the kidney’s ability to filter waste from the blood.

    He noted that when the condition progresses to the point of kidney failure — also known as end-stage kidney disease — patients require long-term dialysis treatments to remove waste from the blood, or a kidney transplant. Both are burdensome, and death among patients with end-stage kidney disease is “very high,” particularly from cardiovascular disease, according to Gough.

    The approval also demonstrates that a blockbuster class of diabetes and weight loss drugs called GLP-1s have significant health benefits beyond regulating blood sugar and suppressing appetite. 

    Ozempic reduced the risk of severe kidney outcomes — including kidney failure, reduction in kidney function, or death from kidney or heart causes — by 24% in diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease compared with a placebo, according to results of a late-stage trial that the approval was based on.

    In patients who took Ozempic, kidney function declined more slowly, the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack dropped 18% and the risk of death from any cause fell 20% compared with the placebo. Ozempic also cut the risk of cardiovascular-related deaths by 29%.

    “We know that, unfortunately, cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease just go hand in hand,” Gough said.

    He added that the major treatments patients typically receive when they have the earliest signs of chronic kidney disease aim to reduce cardiovascular risk factors by paying attention to blood pressure.

    The rate of serious adverse side effects was 49.6% in patients who took Ozempic, lower than the 53.8% seen in the group that received a placebo. There was a slightly higher rate of discontinuations among Ozempic patients due to gastrointestinal side effects commonly seen with GLP-1s, such as nausea and vomiting.

    EU regulators approved Ozempic for the same use in December. 

    Novo Nordisk ended the phase three trial in October, a year earlier than expected, in response to positive results. At the time, the Danish company’s announcement caused shares of kidney dialysis companies to plummet about 20% in a single day. 

    The trial, called FLOW, started in 2019 and followed roughly 3,500 patients with diabetes and moderate to severe chronic kidney disease.

    “From my point of view as a doctor, you don’t get [diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease] in isolation,” Gough said. “These illnesses, unfortunately, co-segregate. They cluster within the same individuals. So if you have a medicine that can target each of these co-morbidities in one injection, then you’re addressing what really matters to the patient.”

    The approval comes after the Biden administration selected three of Novo Nordisk’s drugs with the active ingredient semaglutide for the second cycle of Medicare drug price negotiations. That includes Ozempic, its weight loss counterpart Wegovy and another diabetes treatment called Rybelsus.  

    The FDA’s decision also comes as Novo Nordisk faces increased competition from Eli Lilly and tries to win expanded insurance coverage for Wegovy.

    Last year, Wegovy won approval in the U.S. for use in slashing the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. Novo Nordisk is also studying Wegovy as a potential treatment for fatty liver disease.

    Eximia Victor Limited Liability Company won the prize playing New York Lottery’s VIP Millions scratch-off game. The LLC received chose to receive a one-time lump sum payment of $651,000, after required withholdings. 

    The winning ticket was purchased at Cards & Gift, 324 Jericho Turnpike.

    The New York chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America voted Mookie Betts as the winner of the 2024 Babe Ruth Award, which is presented annually to a player deemed postseason MVP.

    Betts was formally recognized on Saturday night during the 100th annual New York Baseball Writers’ Dinner at the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan, where all 2024 BBWAA winners were celebrated.

    The Los Angeles Dodgers also had winners in Shohei Ohtani, the 2024 National League MVP, and Freddie Freeman and his family receiving the Arthur and Milton Richman You Gotta Have Heart Award, which is presented annually to a member of the baseball community who has overcome difficult circumstances.

    None of the three were in attendance, however. Ohtani recorded a video message for his NL MVP acceptance speech as he remained in Southern California due to being impacted by the recent wildfires.

    The talismanic Indian batter Virat Kohli is all set to make a return to Ranji Trophy, for the first time in over 12 years, this Thursday. Kohli, who last featured for Delhi in the domestic white-ball event in 2012, is a part of the Delhi team for the Ranji Trophy match against Railways. A couple of days before the start of the fixture, Kohli was spotted rubbing shoulders with his Delhi teammates in a practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. 

    Kohli hit the ground in Kotla on Tuesday morning, as several videos and pictures surfaced on social media. He had already informed the Delhi and District State Association of his intent to train with the boys on Tuesday.

    “Kohli informed head coach Sarandeep Singh about his willingness to train with the team. It will be a great experience for the Delhi players if they get to spend so much time with him,” a DDCA official told the Times of India on Monday.

    It has also been reported that Kohli was given the offer of leading the Delhi team in the match against Railways but he declined. With Rishabh Pant not part of the fixture either, Ayush Badoni is set to continue leading the side.

    “Pant has been playing first-class cricket since Duleep Trophy in September. He has played 12 first-class matches in the last three-and-a-half months. With the Champions Trophy around the corner, he has been advised rest in order to get ready for the white-ball season,” an official said.

    Kohli was part of the team when he featured last in a domestic red-ball competition for Delhi, against Uttar Pradesh at Ghaziabad’s Mohan Nagar in 2012.

    “Obviously, it is a great experience for our junior players as they will get to share the dressing room with Virat. If you look at our team, only Navdeep Saini has played alongside Virat in the IPL and for India. In fact, none of the players in the team have played with Virat in the Ranji Trophy. They can learn a lot by watching him,” DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma told PTI.

    Asked about the security arrangements for the game, Sharma said, “We know Virat’s presence raises the profile of the match. Normally, we have 10 to 12 private security personnel for a regular Ranji match, but we will definitely increase security so that Virat can train without any disturbance.”

    Despite the return of Kohli, the Delhi vs Railways match will remain free for spectators, with the DDCA also opening three stands at the Ambedkar Stadium End. Kohli didn’t feature in Delhi’s previous match due to neck sprain.

    Theresa Sons’ random purchase of a lottery ticket during a trip to the store for cigarettes paid off big.

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Montgomery County woman is smiling big after winning $50,000 from a Kentucky Lottery scratch-off ticket.

    Theresa Sons said she went to Poppa’s Quick Stop on Levee Road in Jeffersonville, Kentucky to purchase cigarettes when she also purchased a $2,000,000 Diamond Dazzler scratch-off ticket.

    Previously, she had played another $30 ticket when she decided to try the Diamond Dazzler.

    Sons got the second to the last ticket on the roll, went back to her car and began scratching it.

    “I bout had a heart attack,” she said.

    Instead of scratching from the top down, she told lottery officials she did it from the bottom up – something she never does.

    Her immediate thought, “I won something, I just don’t know what.”

    Sons matched the number 23 to win the game’s $50,000 second prize.

    She said she went home and told her boyfriend who thought something was wrong when he saw her face.

    “This was her first time leaving the house after the snow, we all thought she wrecked her car,” her son said.

    The Kentucky Lottery said this isn’t the first time Sons has won a big prize. She told the lottery she won $10,000 on a game when the Kentucky Lottery first began selling tickets.

    “I’ve been playing a long time,” she said.

    Sons claimed her winnings at the Louisville headquarters, collecting a check for $36,000 after taxes. She said she plans to buy her kids a car.

    Poppa’s Quick Stop will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.
