  • Hoosiers Look to Finish Strong Against Winthrop Eagles in Last Non-Conference Game

Hoosiers Look to Finish Strong Against Winthrop Eagles in Last Non-Conference Game

As the non-conference portion of the schedule winds down, the Indiana Hoosiers are looking to finish strong against the Winthrop Eagles in their last non-conference game of the season. The Hoosiers have had a solid start to the season, with a record of 8-3, but will face a tough test against the Eagles, who come into the game with a record of 6-4.

The Hoosiers have been led by their dynamic duo of Trayce Jackson-Davis and Parker Stewart. Jackson-Davis, a preseason All-American, is averaging 19.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, while Stewart is averaging 12.9 points and shooting 41.5% from three-point range. The Hoosiers will need both players to be at their best against a Winthrop team that likes to push the pace and score in transition.

Winthrop is led by guard Chandler Vaudrin, who is averaging 13.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game. Vaudrin is a versatile player who can score from anywhere on the court and is a threat to record a triple-double on any given night. The Eagles also have a strong supporting cast, with four other players averaging double figures in scoring.

The key for the Hoosiers will be to limit turnovers and control the tempo of the game. Winthrop likes to play fast and force turnovers, so Indiana will need to take care of the ball and make smart decisions on offense. Defensively, the Hoosiers will need to contain Vaudrin and limit the Eagles’ second-chance opportunities.

This game will be a good test for the Hoosiers as they prepare for the start of Big Ten play. A win against a quality opponent like Winthrop would give Indiana momentum heading into conference play and help build confidence for the rest of the season.

The Hoosiers will need to bring their A-game against the Eagles, but if they can execute their game plan and play to their strengths, they should be able to come away with a victory. Hoosier Nation will be watching as Indiana looks to finish strong in their last non-conference game of the season.

  • At the Buzzer: Indiana 77, Winthrop 68 – Inside the Hall

At the Buzzer: Indiana 77, Winthrop 68 – Inside the Hall

Quick thoughts on a 77-68 win against Winthrop:

    How it happened

It was another up-and-down first half for Indiana on Sunday afternoon in Assembly Hall. With Oumar Ballo out of the lineup, the Hoosiers went small with Luke Goode in the starting lineup in place of Ballo. Playing one big seemed to open up things for Myles Rice, who had a team-high 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field and a 4-for-4 mark from the line in 16 first-half minutes. Indiana, however, couldn’t push its lead past eight points and as Kasean Harrison’s 3-pointer splashed in at the end of the first half, the Hoosier lead was just 41-37 at the break. Indiana was a dismal 1-for-10 on 3s in the first half but was better at taking care of the ball with just four turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

The Eagles got within two on a pair of free throws at 49-47, but Luke Goode scored five straight for the Hoosiers to push the lead to seven with 15:15 to play. But Winthrop had an answer. A bucket by Kelton Talford pulled the Eagles to within four at 55-51 with 11:34 left as the Hoosiers continued to miss open 3-pointers. Indiana’s field goal drought nearly reached four minutes entering the under-12 media timeout. After the Eagles cut the Hoosier lead to three, IU ripped off an 8-2 run to grab a 63-55 advantage at the under-eight media timeout. Winthrop’s Nick Johnson split a pair of free throws with 6:12 to play to make it 63-58 but Indiana responded with back-to-back buckets from Rice and Trey Galloway to stretch the lead to nine, its largest of the afternoon. That prompted a Winthrop timeout with 5:16 left.

The Hoosiers led 69-60 at the final media timeout, but Winthrop scored five straight out of the timeout to make it 69-65 with 3:24 left. A 3-pointer by Johnson cut the IU lead to one with 3:16 to play. Reneau then split a pair of free throws to make it 70-68 IU with three minutes to play. After the Hoosiers got a stop on the next possession, Langdon Hatton secured a rebound, was fouled and made two free throws to make it 72-68. After another defensive stop by the Hoosiers, Rice found Reneau for a bucket and a foul to make it 75-68 with two minutes remaining. An Anthony Leal tip-in with 28 seconds left made it 77-68 and sealed the victory for the Hoosiers.

    Standout performer

Rice led the Hoosiers with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals in 32 minutes. Reneau added 14 points and seven rebounds in just 14 minutes due to foul trouble. Hatton was huge off the bench, finishing with seven points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots in 26 minutes.

    Statistics that stand out

After Winthrop got within one with 3:16 left, the Hoosiers finished the game on an 8-0 run to escape with a nine-point victory. Indiana never led by more than nine points.

    Winthrop’s Mark Prosser

Mark Prosser is in his fourth season as head coach of the Winthrop men’s basketball program. He was named head coach on April 2, 2021.

Prosser started his coaching career as a student assistant at his alma mater, Marist. After a few seasons, he landed his first assistant job at Wofford in 2002. He then spent five seasons with Bucknell until 2008. He returned to Wofford and remained on their staff until 2011.

Prosser got his first head coaching gig at Division 3 Brevard in the spring of 2011. He spent only one season at the helm and accumulated a 5-23 record. In 2012, Prosser was hired onto Winthrop’s staff as an assistant and remained there until 2018 before getting another head coaching job at Western Carolina. He finished with a 37-53 overall record across three seasons at WCU.

Prosser was then hired to lead Winthrop and has since had some success. In his first season, he led Winthrop to a 23-9 overall record and a 14-2 record in conference play, which was good enough to win the South division in the Big South. In the following two seasons, Winthrop finished in the top-5 of the conference. So far, Prosser has a 65-45 overall record with Winthrop.

    Winthrop’s KenPom notable numbers:

    • They’ve struggled from outside with a 28.5 three-point percentage (No. 332).

    OG’s Pick

    Win/Loss Record: 8-2

It’s Indiana’s last game before they head into conference play for the rest of the season, so it is safe to say they’d like to tune things up before Big Ten play.

Winthrop has some decent metrics defensively, but have struggled against teams of higher competition (i.e. Florida State, Louisville). The Hoosiers have not been a team to pull away early though, and were only ahead by single digits in the last five minutes against Chattanooga. Although I do expect the Hoosiers to win comfortably, I don’t think it’s an entirely dominant effort.

    PICK: Indiana 82 – Winthrop 68
