WJC Flyers’ Prospects Updates – FLYERS NITTY GRITTY

Before the WJC Tournament kicked off, there were supposed to be five Flyers Prospects in this particular tournament. Unfortunately, Jack Berglund broke his hand for Sweden in a pre-season tilt, thus he he has been scratched for the tournament, obviously.

This is a great tournament to highlight prospects, and upcoming draftee prospects. A lot of craziness happens, but that’s what makes this tournament fun, especially this time of year.

Oliver Bonk has played well. Bonk has made the right plays at both even strength, and with the man advantage. He has tallied one goal and one assists in three games played, while owning a +3.

Bonk has broke up some plays, and has made some goods reads Defensively. Canada plays Team USA today at 8pm EST tonight.

Jett Luchanko bursted on the scene a few games ago against Latvia, with a beautiful short-handed tally. However, he did not have a single shot in the eventual shootout loss to Latvia, which was pretty surprising. He is also a plus one for his efforts, as he continues to play well at both ends of the ice. There is a reason he was coveted by the Flyers, and it begins with his polay with the puck. Luchanko is very hard to move off the puck, and he also makes good reads.

Flyers Goaltending prospect Carson Bjarnason has been relegated to the third string goalie position for Team Canada, so he fails to get a mention.

    .

Heikki Ruohonen has yet to hit the scoresheet for Finland. Hopefully, he does today at 230pm EST.

12/29 Preview – Byfield’s Play Right on Q + No Skate Today, Back-To-Backs, WJC Update

WHO: Los Angeles Kings (20-10-5) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (16-16-4)
    WHAT: 2024-25 Regular-Season Game
WHEN: Sunday, December 29 @ 6:00 PM Pacific
WHERE: Crypto.com Arena – Los Angeles, CA
HOW TO FOLLOW: VIDEO: Fan Duel Sports Network – AUDIO – ESPN LA App – TWITTER: @dooleylak & @lakings

TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Kings conclude a back-to-back set this evening against Philadelphia, as they take on the Flyers for the second time in 11 days.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Forwards Anze Kopitar and Kevin Fiala led the way for the Kings with two goals apiece when these teams met in Philadelphia earlier this month.

12 Kings had a point in that game and six had multi-point evenings, with forward Warren Foegele collecting a goal and an assist, while Alex Laferriere, Vladislav Gavrikov and Jordan Spence each tallied two helpers in the victory.

KINGS VITALS: With the back-to-back, the Kings did not hold a morning skate today.

With goaltender Darcy Kuemper playing yesterday against Edmonton, expect goaltender David Rittich to get the start this evening versus the Flyers. Rittich brings a lifetime record of 5-0-0 against Philadelphia, with a .932 save percentage and a 1.95 goals-against average.

For reference, here’s how the Kings lined up during yesterday’s practice –

The Kings went 11/7 yesterday against the Oilers and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the same alignment today. If they look to make a change, I’d expect it to be in the form of forward Andre Lee coming in up front to give the Kings 12 forwards.

Forward Arthur Kaliyev and defenseman Andreas Englund are also available, if the Kings sought further changes, but Lee feels like the option if the Kings do opt for a change.

FLYERS VITALS: Similar to the Kings, the Flyers are also completing a back-to-back, having defeated the Anaheim Ducks yesterday at Honda Center.

Per Jackie Spiegel of the Philadelphia Inquirer, here’s how the Flyers lined up yesterday in Anaheim –

Flyers forward Tyson Foerster had a hand in all three Flyers goals against the Kings when these teams met earlier this month, scoring twice and adding an assist, along with a +3 rating. In total, Foerster has six points (3-3-6) over his last five games played.

Storyline Of The Day – Right On Q
Quinton Byfield talked about the win over the Rangers earlier this month as a turning point for him.

Including that game, Byfield has five goals and seven points over his last six games, bolstered by a two-goal performance in yesterday’s win over Edmonton, including the overtime game-winning goal. In adding an assist, it was Byfield first three-point game of the season and his first since February 10, also coming against Edmonton here in Los Angeles.

“Probably since the Rangers game, when I put one by Shesterkin, it just feels like I can beat goalies again,” Byfield said.

Including that game, no player in the NHL has scored more even-strength goals than Byfield.

If you look at his goals in that span, you’d see that four of the five were shots that beat goaltenders clean, starting with the goal he mentioned against New York. A week later in Nashville, Byfield hammered a shot from the slot off the post and in and beat Edmonton’s Stuart Skinner twice last night with his shot. The overtime game winner was particularly impressive and I’m not sure it’s a shot he even takes earlier this season.

There it is. He made an assertive move onto his forehand, working his way into some space in the slot. Sometimes, it’s just shooter against goaltender. Byfield trusted his shot, picked his spot on the glove side and beat Skinner clean with a shot for his first career overtime game winner. It’s a play he admitted he probably wouldn’t have shot on even 15 games ago.

“I’m just kind of finding it back again, I’m confident with the puck, taking guys on 1-on-1, using my speed,” he said. “I kind of just came back to that and it’s started working.”

It’s looking like the Byfield was saw during training camp this fall. The Byfield who appeared set to take the step from breakout play to star player. He was the best player on the team during preseason games but the production didn’t quite translate into the regular season. By his own admission, Byfield felt very confident heading into the season but when he had a few games that weren’t his best, it was hard to bring himself back up.

As Jim Hiller detailed, every player has those ups and downs, but sometimes it takes a veteran to not get wrapped up in it. Something that will come for Byfield. Right now it’s a high, with Hiller calling Byfield the team’s best player in Washington before the break, which followed a really strong showing against Nashville the game before. Now it’s three in a row. It’s not going to be 50 in a row, though, so at some point, Byfield’s level will drop off a bit and he’ll have to find his way back to level. As he gets more and more experience with the ups and downs of the NHL, those stretches should become smaller and smaller, as they are for Anze Kopitar and as they’ve become, with time, for Adrian Kempe.

If Byfield can continue to find that level, it just unlocks another level for the Kings as a team. Honestly, it’s essential to that being possible. The Kings need to be a team with three lines playing at a Top-6 level. With the way Byfield’s line has come together with Warren Foegele and Tanner Jeannot, you can see that possibility. Same goes for Phillip Danault between Kevin Fiala and Alex Laferriere. When there are three lines playing at that level, the Kings can exploit matchups the way they did yesterday. Neither Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl were on the ice for a goal against. They can’t play the entire game. Byfield’s line exploited the matchup they had and, when things are clicking, that’s a recipe for Kings success.

While Philadelphia is a different challenge, built more like the Kings without the star power but with a lot of younger players throughout their lineup, it’s the same focus for Byfield. Keep it up at that level and the production will continue to be there.

    3 To Watch For –
    – Double back-to-back today.

Both teams played yesterday afternoon, with the Kings winning at home and the Flyers defeating the Ducks on the road. With matching 1 PM puck drops, no real advantage there, with both teams having the chance to get a full night of sleep without much travel between Anaheim and Los Angeles.

Thus far this season, the Kings have been one of the NHL’s most successful teams on the second half of back-to-backs, at 4-1-0, while the Flyers have been one of the least at 1-5-0. Only Boston has collected more points on a per-game basis this season than the Kings in these situations, with another good opportunity tonight to add to that total.

    – Today’s game is Game 2 of 5 on this current five-game homestand. It’s not technically the longest homestand of the season, but the six-game homestand in February is broken up by a two-week break for the 4 Nations Faceofff. So, this feels like the longest one the Kings have.

The Kings are 11-2-1 at home this season, good for a .821 winning percentage that trails only Vegas in the league standings. Great to have these games at home and, if the Kings can take advantage, an opportunity to bank points.

“It’s an advantage if you win them,” Hiller said. “Historically, most teams’ home records are better than their road records. We’ve played particularly well in our building, in front of our fans, so I’m happy that we have the least amount of home games thus far. We’ll make them up, but we’ve got to play well and win them.”

The Kings have played just the 14 times at home, fewest in the NHL to date. A good opportunity, despite difficult competition upcoming, to make the most of an extended stretch at home.

    – Lastly, a quick World Juniors update.

Goaltender Carter George posted a 31-save shutout in his World Juniors Championships debut with Team Canada, a 4-0 victory over Finland in the opening game of the tournament. The 31 saves in total included 20 during a third period in which Finland surged. Big-game player, with the “it factor” is how George has been described by evaluators both inside and outside the organization.

Hampton Slukynsky won his tournament debut for the United States, a 5-1 win over Latvia. Slukynsky made 25 saves on 26 shots, denying the Latvian’s their second consecutive upset victory.

Add onto the goaltending a first goal of the tournament for Kings defensive prospect Jakub Dvorak for Team Czechia, which improved to 2-0 thus far, and you’ve got quite the start. Dvorak is +4 from wins over Switzerland and Kazakhstan.

Good start on all three fronts.

For the big club, Kings and Flyers, final game of 2024!

Hey hockey fans! As we gear up for the game on December 29th, all eyes are on Quinton Byfield’s impressive play as of late. The young forward has been lighting it up on the ice, showcasing his skill and determination in every shift. With his play right on Q, Byfield is sure to be a key player to watch in the upcoming game.

In other news, the team will not be hitting the ice for a skate today as they prepare for back-to-back games. This rest day will be crucial for the players to recharge and refocus before hitting the ice once again.

And speaking of hitting the ice, let’s not forget about the World Junior Championships! With the tournament in full swing, fans are eagerly following the action and keeping an eye on our team’s prospects as they compete on the international stage.

  • Roster Choices Haunt Canada in Shocking WJC Loss

Roster Choices Haunt Canada in Shocking WJC Loss

The entire bench for Canada was noticeably bewildered following their 3-2 shootout loss to Latvia at the 2025 World Junior Championship. Canada’s second group stage game was a shocking wake-up call for one of the global hockey powerhouses. Coming off a fifth-place finish at last year’s event, all of Hockey Canada has been vocal about how this year’s tournament is about redemption and reclaiming the gold medal.

A loss to the Latvian squad has made one thing clear for Canada: their roster is not constructed to win at this event. Lots of chatter has been had around Hockey Canada’s selection camp, with notable names being left off the final roster.

The most glaring omission was forward Beckett Sennecke and 2025 draft-eligible winger Michael Misa. Sennecke is a big, physical winger prospect for the Anaheim Ducks who is excellent in his own offensive end and can be a bit of a pest in the defensive end. He was a late addition to Canada’s selection camp, which definitely hurt his chances, but he would be the perfect addition to this team.

Where he would’ve helped the most is on the power play. To Canada’s credit, they managed to net a huge goal with the man advantage against Latvia, but they finished the game converting on just that one power play opportunity. Sennecke has the vision, shooting ability and net front skills that could have made the difference against Latvia and made an impact throughout the tournament.

Misa has been one of the best players in the entire CHL this season, and he’s making his own case to be the top pick at the 2025 NHL Draft. He’s currently averaging a goal a game through 30 contests to go with 61 points this season. He has an undeniable offensive skillset, but he’s also eager to engage physically on the ice. His game perfectly aligns with Canada’s mission of being tougher and stronger in all three areas of the game, but he never even received an invite to the selection camp.

Canada’s power play, as currently constructed, is costing them goals and wins. They turned to Tanner Howe, a pesky forward in his own right, as the net front option and he’s been ineffective in the role through two games. Having Sennecke in that role or Misa’s playmaking instead feels like a slam dunk decision in hindsight.

Defense has been just as big a concern for Canada. The power play was set to be quarterbacked by 2025-draft eligible prospect Matthew Schaefer. He looked at home in the role against Finland, but an upper-body injury could rob Canada of their top offensive defenseman for the rest of the tournament.

Now, there is no one to fill his role and be as productive. Oliver Bonk is not a top power play defenseman, but Canada trotted him out first for all four of their power play chances against Latvia.

Would having one of Zayn Parekh or Carter Yakemchuk fix that issue for Canada? The two were the most notable defensive omissions, but Canada would welcome both after seeing the consequences of lacking a No. 1 defenseman. Parekh and Yakemchuk provide similar skillsets to Bonk, Schaefer and Sam Dickinson, but it’s clear that the trio Canada chose was not its best three possible choices.

Canada’s heartbreaking loss in the World Junior Championship has left fans and analysts alike scratching their heads over the roster choices made by the coaching staff.

Despite being favored to win the tournament, Canada fell to the Czech Republic in a stunning upset that has left many questioning the decision-making behind the team’s lineup.

Some have pointed to the exclusion of top prospects in favor of more experienced players as a major factor in Canada’s defeat. Others have criticized the lack of chemistry and cohesion among the players, suggesting that the roster selections may have been to blame.

Whatever the reason, one thing is clear: Canada’s loss in the WJC has left a bitter taste in the mouths of fans and players alike. It’s a reminder that even the most talented teams can falter if the right choices aren’t made when it comes to selecting the roster.

As Canada looks to bounce back from this disappointing defeat, it’s clear that the coaching staff will need to reevaluate their roster choices and make sure they have the best possible lineup on the ice for future competitions. Only time will tell if this shocking loss will serve as a wake-up call for Team Canada.

Olivers Murnieks scored for Latvia, which went 0-for-7 on the power play. Switzerland went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

The World Junior Championship is right around the corner and Team Canada is already making waves in their pre-tournament matchups. In a recent game against Czechia, Canada came out on top with a 4-2 victory, thanks in large part to a standout performance from forward Riley McKenna.

McKenna lit up the scoreboard with two goals in the game, showcasing his offensive prowess and contributing to Canada’s success. His performance was a bright spot for the team as they continue to fine-tune their game before the tournament officially kicks off.

With this win under their belt, Canada is looking strong and confident heading into the World Junior Championship. Fans are excited to see how McKenna and the rest of the team will perform on the international stage, and are hopeful that they can bring home another gold medal for their country.

The Daily: Detroit Draftees Among Top WJC Players; Veleno Hot

One of Canada’s favorite holiday traditions is watching the World Junior Championship on television. Bob McKenzie’s take on the WJC is always a respected element of that coverage.

On TSN’s World Juniors Preview show,  McKenzie spotlighted four players to watch at this year’s event, and two of those players are Red Wings draft picks.

Merry Christmas, Red Wings fans! That’s probably a gift this fan base needs, given how poorly the Detroit team is performing.

USA goalie Trey Augustine (No. 41, 2023), and Swedish defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka (No. 17, 2023) are Red Wings draft picks, joining Washington Capitals pick Ryan Leonard (No. 8, 2023) and San Jose Sharks prospect Kasper Halttunnen (No. 23, 2023). Leonard is expected to be a top American scorer, and Halttunnen is a Finland impact forward.

USA plays its first WJC game Thursday against Germany at 2:20 on NHL Network. Detroit 2024 second round pick Max Plante is also on the U.S. team.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

A former NHLer believes he should have won one of the Norris Trophies that Detroit superstar Nicklas Lidstrom owns.

Bob Duff opines that the Red Wings team are “broken at the break.”  Not much is going right for coach Derek Lalonde’s team.

The line of Joe Veleno, Marco Kasper and Jonatan Berggren is one of the few bright spots for Detroit over the past week. Veleno has three goals in four games.

    Red Wings Extra

Detroit, with only three wins in its past 12 games, doesn’t play again until Friday when it plays on the road against Toronto. Detroit’s 4-2 win versus Toronto (with Ville Husso in net) 11 days ago is one of the three wins the Red Wings have had since Nov. 29.

    Hockey Now Network

Boston: Andrew Fantuccio writes that the Bruins passed a massive test by beating the Washington Capitals Monday. Boston Bruins.

Colorado: Colleen Flynn explains why the holiday break is so important to the Colorado Avalanche.

Pittsburgh: Dan Kingerski graded the Penguins with a “B” for their win against the Philadelphia Flyers. Does that make him Scrooge? Pittsburgh Penguins.

In a strong showing at the World Junior Championships, Detroit Red Wings draftees were among the top players to watch. Joe Veleno, in particular, stood out with his impressive performance on the ice.

Veleno, who was drafted by the Red Wings in 2018, showcased his skill and talent in the tournament, solidifying his status as a top prospect for the team. He played a key role in Team Canada’s success, contributing offensively and making smart plays throughout the games.

With his strong showing at the WJC, Veleno has proven himself as a player to watch in the coming seasons. Red Wings fans can look forward to seeing him continue to develop and make an impact on the team.

Overall, Detroit’s draftees shone bright at the World Junior Championships, showing that the future is bright for the Red Wings. Stay tuned for more updates on these talented young players as they continue to make their mark in the hockey world.
