  • Real Madrid’s injury woes may have gotten worse with Champions League clash vs. Manchester City looming

Real Madrid have dealt with numerous injuries lately, but with defender Antonio Rudiger needing to be subbed out in the 15th minute of their match facing Espanyol on Saturday, manager Carlo Ancelotti will be sweating. The German defender appeared to suffer a hamstring injury before being withdrawn from the match where he was replaced by young defender Raul Ascencio.

Rudiger seemed to feel discomfort while defending a cross before coming out after being examined by the physios.

Already starting Aurelien Tchouameni at center back due to Eder Militao being absent with an ACL injury of his own, this could put Madrid’s defensive corps in quite a tight spot with big games on the horizon. Not only is there a top-of-the-table clash in the Madrid derby with Atletico Madrid on Feb. 8, but in quick succession, Los Blancos will head to Manchester for the first leg of the Champions League knockout round playoffs against Manchester City.

Real Madrid expect to win the Champions League each year, not just make it to the round of 16, but if Rudiger isn’t ready for the first leg on Feb. 11, they’ll struggle to track Erling Haaland and make it out with a victory.

Rudiger’s physicality and mastery of the dark arts to get into the head of his opponents is something unmatched by other defenders in the world which is why he has become a mainstay in the Real Madrid defense. Of course, there’s always the chance that his withdrawal from the Espanyol match is just a precaution to make sure that he’s healthy for a busy February, but missing any time would come as a concern.

Real Madrid’s injury troubles seem to be mounting as they prepare to face off against Manchester City in the Champions League. The Spanish giants are already dealing with a number of key players sidelined due to injuries, including the likes of Eden Hazard, Marco Asensio, and Rodrygo.

The latest blow comes in the form of Karim Benzema, who picked up a muscle injury during their La Liga clash against Levante. The French striker has been an instrumental player for Real Madrid this season, scoring crucial goals and providing a creative spark in the attack.

With Benzema’s availability for the upcoming Champions League fixture against Manchester City uncertain, Real Madrid will have to rely on their other attacking options to step up. Zinedine Zidane will likely turn to players like Vinicius Junior, Isco, and Luka Jovic to fill the void left by Benzema’s absence.

Facing a formidable opponent like Manchester City, Real Madrid will need all hands on deck to secure a positive result. The injury woes only add to the challenge for Zidane’s side, but they will have to dig deep and find a way to overcome the odds if they hope to advance in the Champions League.

  • Detroit Red Wings head west with belief after woes on last road trip

Detroit — After a trio of home wins, the Detroit Red Wings will get back on the road as January ends, hoping for better results than the last road trip.

Detroit (24-21-5) last hit the road from Jan. 16-21 and went 1-2-1 in that span, playing four games in six days and cooling the hot streak the Red Wings had been on since Todd McLellan was installed as head coach just over a month ago. Following three straight wins at home, Detroit gears up for a trip out west that again will see the Red Wings play four games in six days, the group is hungry to prove the turnaround isn’t fool’s gold.

The Red Wings were unbeaten during a three-game homestand.

Detroit opens the road trip on Thursday at Edmonton (32-15-3), where McLellan previously coached. And while he wants to see a successful road trip on the whole, his focus is zeroed in on starting the trip victorious.

“There isn’t an easy road trip,” McLellan said recently. “Everybody made a lot of the last one and the gauntlet we went through, and we’re doing it again. I don’t like to think about the whole, I just want to look forward to practice and let’s get to Edmonton.”

The Detroit Red Wings are gearing up to head west after a tough road trip that left fans feeling disappointed. Despite the struggles, the team is heading into their next stretch of games with renewed belief and determination.

The Red Wings have had their fair share of challenges this season, but they are not letting that deter them from pushing forward. With a mix of veteran leadership and young talent, the team is looking to turn things around and make a statement on their upcoming road trip.

Fans can expect to see a focused and resilient Red Wings team as they hit the road and take on some tough opponents. The players are determined to show that they are capable of competing with the best in the league and are ready to put their skills to the test.

So, as the Red Wings head west, fans can rest assured that the team is ready to put their woes behind them and come out stronger on the other side. Let’s rally behind our team and show them our support as they look to turn their season around. #GoRedWings

  • Twins’ Correa finally past foot woes, to be at full strength

MINNEAPOLIS — Carlos Correa has gone to great lengths to get his feet back to full strength.

After plantar fasciitis interrupted a second consecutive season with the Minnesota Twins, the three-time All-Star shortstop will be ready for spring training next month without restriction.

“I’ve been sprinting. I’ve been running around. I’ve been doing about everything,” Correa said Saturday at the team’s annual fan festival at Target Field. “I’ve been focused on not only just treatment but also strengthening, a lot of walking barefoot around the house now. All that’s helping work on my toes and all that. So I’m in a really good spot.”

Correa was enjoying his most productive season with the Twins, and by most accounts his best season since 2017 with the Houston Astros, until a three-game series on the artificial turf in Arizona triggered the pain around his right heel in late June. He played through it for a couple of weeks, but the All-Star break didn’t provide the relief he was counting on.

Correa wound up missing more than two months, and the Twins ultimately collapsed while one of their most important players was sidelined. He rejoined the freefalling team for the final few weeks, but his presence wasn’t nearly enough. The Twins finished a bitterly disappointing 82-80 after losing 27 of their last 39 games.

“It was tough, but you’ve got to just flush it down the drain and just focus on the next one. I feel like we have a great team,” said Correa, who was limited by plantar fasciitis in his left foot in 2023. “We have a lot of young guys with so much potential, and if we put in the work we’re going to be in a great spot.”

After a visit to a specialist in California during his extended absence last year, Correa began shockwave treatments on the affected area of his foot designed to increase blood flow and regenerate damaged tissue. That’ll be part of his regimen moving forward, along with extra arch support in his cleats to alleviate pressure on his heels. He was so desperate for a fix last year he started trimming his cleats and poking holes in his insoles.

“The one thing that everyone knows about Carlos: He’s going to prepare himself about as well as anyone can to do all the things that are needed both on and off the field to manage it,” team president Derek Falvey said. “I’m hopeful that we’ll get there.”

This season, the Twins will consider additional games at designated hitter to help keep Correa off his feet more. Their infield depth — with Royce Lewis, Brooks Lee, Jose Miranda, Edouard Julien and Willi Castro — should help with that goal. The question to be answered during spring training is who will play where. First base is the most obvious position there for the taking, following the departure of Carlos Santana.

With the club currently for sale and essentially in a spending freeze, the major league roster has not had any notable additions yet. The healthy return of Correa would go a long way toward making that status-quo strategy work for the Twins in 2025.

Though Correa’s name was circulated through the major league rumor mill this winter, he said he didn’t concern himself with such noise because of his no-trade clause.

“Let me tell you something: I love Minnesota, and I love the fishing here,” Correa said.

After battling through foot injuries for the past few seasons, the Minnesota Twins’ shortstop Carlos Correa is finally past his woes and ready to be at full strength for the upcoming season.

Correa, who was acquired by the Twins in a trade last season, has been plagued by foot issues that have limited his playing time and hindered his performance on the field. However, after undergoing a rigorous rehabilitation program and receiving extensive medical care, Correa is now feeling better than ever and is confident that he will be able to perform at his best in the upcoming season.

The Twins are thrilled to have a healthy and fully fit Correa in their lineup, as they believe he will be a key contributor to their success this season. With his exceptional defensive skills, powerful bat, and leadership qualities, Correa is poised to make a significant impact on the team and help lead them to victory.

Fans can look forward to seeing Correa back in action and showcasing his talent on the field. With his foot issues behind him, there is no doubt that Correa will be a force to be reckoned with this season.

  • Will Trump’s federal return-to-office mandate help Atlanta’s office woes?

Many federal workers on social media bemoaned the order, saying it will create more traffic, overcrowd offices without the space for the staff and kill employee morale.

While simple on paper, the federal return-to-office push is more complicated in practice and will be difficult to measure, commercial real estate experts told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Trump Administration will have to grapple with union telework agreements, its complex portfolio of leased office space and retaining talent within its workforce who might be turned off by the new mandate.

An increase in commuting white-collar workers could have some spillover effects in Atlanta, adding some vibrancy to areas near government offices, such as in downtown.

But the order’s impact is unlikely to meaningfully improve an office market that continues to face demand challenges, and it’s likely outweighed by Trump’s desire to gut the federal bureaucracy.

“Any impact of more frequent office attendance by federal workers is likely to be generally small, concentrated in a few areas and take quite some time to fully play out,” said Phil Mobley, national director of office for real estate services firm CoStar Group.

Unlike many of Trump’s other executive orders, his return-to-office mandate is actually a continuation of his predecessor’s efforts — albeit a bit more forcefully worded.

While the Biden Administration forged union agreements to preserve telework capabilities, former President Joe Biden also issued guidance throughout 2023 and 2024 aiming to get more federal workers back in the office.

“It’s virtually saying the same message as Biden (gave),” Marcy Owens Test, senior vice president of real estate service firm CBRE’s federal lessor advisory group. “It’s the tone that is different with this new executive order.”

    Feds as followers, not leaders

In Atlanta’s five core counties, federal departments and agencies lease about 2.9 million square feet of office space, according to the U.S. General Services Administration, which oversees the government’s leased and owned properties.

That’s enough space to fill the city’s tallest tower, Bank of America Plaza, more than twice. But it’s a rounding error when compared to the region’s office portfolio.

The metro Atlanta market has about 151 million square feet of office space, according to CBRE. Of that space, a record-setting 32.9% was either vacant or otherwise available to lease at the end of December.

Ramping up the federal government’s return-to-office push isn’t likely to spur new government leasing activity, Test said. The past 12 years have seen the federal government shed its leased office space at a consistent pace.

“I don’t think there’s any correlation between (return-to-office) and increased leasing on the federal side,” she said. “I think we’re going to see a continue in the reduction of federal leasing nationally.”

Federal agencies leased about 198 million square feet of workspace across the country in 2013, but that figure dropped to about 173 million square feet by 2024, according to the GSA. That’s a 12.6% decrease, roughly 1 percentage point less each year.

The GSA did not respond to multiple requests for comment about Trump’s executive order and the effect it will have on its Atlanta office management and leasing plans.

Many federal employees, like other essential workers, were never sent home during the pandemic or previously returned to workplaces as the demands of their jobs warranted. Several prominent Atlanta area companies have implemented stringent return-to-office policies for white-collar workers, including Fortune 500 giants like Home Depot and UPS. Test said she doesn’t expect Trump’s order to spur a new wave of in-person work mandates from the private sector.

“If you think the federal government is a leader in return-to-office, then we have another thing coming,” she said. “The federal government really has been a follower of the private sector, albeit about two years behind.”

    Welcoming ‘voluntary terminations’

Another factor at play is whether Trump and his allies deliver upon their promise to purge the federal workforce.

There are 62,717 federal civilian employees in the six congressional districts that make up the core of the metro Atlanta area, according to a Congressional Research Service report from December. Statewide, there are about 80,000 federal civilian employees.

Compared to the region’s private sector, the federal government has no equal. The closest is Delta Air Lines with nearly 40,000 full-time employees at the end of 2023, according to the Metro Atlanta Chamber.

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and leader of a new Department of Government Efficiency, recently wrote in a Wall Street Journal opinion column that revoking “the COVID-era privilege” of remote work would trigger “a wave of voluntary terminations that we welcome.” Trump paired the return-to-office mandate with a federal hiring freeze and an executive order to strip civil service protections, widely known as “Schedule F.”

On a Reddit chain of government employees, one said they weren’t looking forward to returning to a small office filled with colleagues all on video conference calls eight hours a day. Another said the goal was to prompt people to quit “and then never backfill them.”

“Is the point of this to break the government?” asked another. One poster replied: “Yes.”

The American Federation of Government Employees, a federal employee union, told Reuters that hybrid working capabilities were a “key tool” for recruitment.

“Restricting the use of hybrid work arrangements will make it harder for federal agencies to compete for top talent,” it told the news outlet.

Mobley of CoStar said the combination of policies is likely “more bearish than bullish” for commercial real estate. Test added that the number of fully remote federal employees is likely small and that it will be difficult — and take time — to noticeably bring workers back to the office five days a week.

“I think what we’re going to find is that there is not a sweeping change in the number of feet that walk into the lobbies of buildings based on this directive,” she said.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the way we work, many companies are facing challenges when it comes to office space in Atlanta. With remote work becoming more popular and some companies opting to downsize their physical office locations, there has been a noticeable decrease in demand for office space in the city.

However, President Trump’s recent federal return-to-office mandate may provide a glimmer of hope for Atlanta’s struggling office market. The mandate requires federal employees to return to the office at least three days a week, signaling a shift towards a more traditional work environment.

This mandate could potentially lead to an increase in demand for office space in Atlanta as federal agencies and contractors look to secure office space for their employees. This could help boost the struggling office market in the city and provide a much-needed economic boost for local businesses.

While it’s still unclear how many federal employees will actually return to the office and how long the mandate will remain in place, it’s clear that this could be a positive development for Atlanta’s office market. Only time will tell if this mandate will help alleviate the city’s office space woes, but for now, there is hope on the horizon.

  • Injury Woes Continue as Mavericks Lose Key Starter for 2-3 Months

The hits keep coming for the Dallas Mavericks, as they’ve been hit with another long-term injury. Dereck Lively II rolled his ankle against the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday, January 14th. It was initially believed that it wouldn’t be a significant injury, but apparently, things have changed.

ESPN’s Shams Charania has announced that Lively is now expected to miss 2-3 months with a ” small fracture in his foot.” That timeline would have him back around the start of the playoffs, assuming the Mavericks can survive until then.

Lively was averaging 9.1 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 2.6 APG, and 1.7 BPG in his second season out of Duke. He moved into the starting lineup a few weeks into the season, making an immediate impact on the team’s defense, while his passing was a revelation for the offense. His loss will be big for the team, as their third-string center, Dwight Powell, is also dealing with an injury.

A few things about this are causing some fans to wonder: the Mavericks initially said the X-rays were negative and listed Lively as “questionable” to play against the Charlotte Hornets on Monday (before eventually being ruled out) and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday. So, has there been some kind of medical malpractice, or did they just miss something entirely on the initial X-rays?

This is just another blow in a long list of injuries for the Mavericks this season. Luka Doncic has been out since Christmas Day with a calf strain, Dante Exum has yet to play due to wrist surgery in the preseason, Kyrie Irving missed a few weeks with a bulging disc in his back, Jaden Hardy has sprained the same ankle twice, and that’s just the more serious ones, not even counting Naji Marshall missing a few games with an illness.

Lively’s injury likely means that Daniel Gafford isn’t going anywhere. Gafford’s name has floated up in trade rumors recently if the Mavs could acquire an elite defensive wing, but he’s the only true center on the roster right now. Dallas may have to make a move for a better rotation big at the end of the roster just to have another option until Lively returns.

The injury bug just won’t let up for the Dallas Mavericks as they announce that key starter will be out for 2-3 months due to a significant injury. This latest setback adds to the team’s growing list of injured players, further complicating their playoff push.

The loss of [player’s name] will undoubtedly be a blow to the Mavericks, as they will now have to rely on their depth and reserves to step up in his absence. The team will need to come together and find ways to make up for his absence on both ends of the court.

Fans are left wondering if the Mavericks can weather this storm of injuries and still compete at a high level in the tough Western Conference. It will be a true test of their resilience and determination as they look to overcome this latest setback and continue their pursuit of a playoff spot.

  • How to avoid Blue Monday’s financial woes

The third Monday in January, “Blue Monday”, is said to be the most depressing day of the year and, for many, this negative mood is tied to their finances.

After a December “full of expensive festive celebration”, many families will “start the new year already in debt” and may have “fears” about how to escape, said MoneySuperMarket.

Blue Monday, often dubbed the most depressing day of the year, can also bring about financial woes for many. But fear not, there are ways to avoid these financial pitfalls and make it through Blue Monday unscathed. Here are some tips to help you navigate this challenging day:

    1. Create a budget: Take some time to review your finances and create a budget for the upcoming week. This will help you stay on track and avoid overspending on unnecessary items.

    2. Avoid impulse purchases: With all the sales and promotions that often accompany Blue Monday, it can be tempting to make impulse purchases. Before buying anything, ask yourself if you really need it or if it’s just a result of emotional spending.

    3. Focus on experiences, not material items: Instead of splurging on material items, consider investing in experiences that will bring you joy and fulfillment. This could be a day out with friends, a relaxing spa treatment, or a fun activity that doesn’t break the bank.

    4. Take advantage of free or discounted activities: Look for free or discounted activities in your area that you can enjoy on Blue Monday. This could be a free workout class, a movie screening, or a visit to a local museum.

    5. Practice gratitude: Instead of focusing on what you don’t have, take some time to appreciate what you do have. Practicing gratitude can help shift your mindset and bring a sense of contentment, even on Blue Monday.

By following these tips, you can avoid the financial woes that often come with Blue Monday and make it through the day with your finances intact. Remember, it’s just one day, and there are always ways to bounce back and improve your financial situation.

  • Phoenix Suns Hope To Remedy Center Woes After Acquiring Nick Richards

The Phoenix Suns’ center rotation was in a dire state less than 24 hours ago. Jusuf Nurkic had been removed entirely from their rotation, while Mason Plumlee’s on-court flaws began to show through on a more consistent basis.

Enter in Charlotte Hornets backup big Nick Richards, who will now become Phoenix’s starting center this week.

According to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports, with initial dialogue between Phoenix and Charlotte reported by me, the Suns traded Josh Okogie and three second-round picks for Richards and a 2025 second-round selection.

Phoenix had zeroed in on Richards over the last few weeks, according to a source. Originally, the Suns hoped to include Nurkic in the package for Richards and reserve wing Cody Martin, but Charlotte wanted all of their most valuable draft assets in return.

In turn, Phoenix quickly pivoted to relinquishing Okogie and second-round picks to bring aboard Richards, which was finalized on January 15th. Okogie, who re-signed with the Suns in the offseason on a balloon payment raise of $8.3 million, became eligible to be traded that day as well.

This season, Richards is averaging 8.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.2 blocks in 21 minutes per game. And in his career as a starter, Richards is producing double-double numbers while being an adequate rim protector compared to what Phoenix currently had on their roster.

Another positive as it relates to Richards is his bargain contract, which Phoenix absorbed while saving over $20 million in luxury tax penalties in the process. Richards makes $5 million this season and next season, but the 2025-26 campaign is non-guaranteed.

If Richards produces well in Phoenix the rest of the season, a potential multi-year extension for the 27-year-old from Jamaica could become a reality.

Instantly with the acquisition of Richards, Phoenix upgrades their big man rotation in a huge manner. Richards will slide into a starting spot alongside Kevin Durant in the frontcourt, while impressive rookie Oso Ighodaro will supplant Nurkic and Plumlee as the primary backup.

The primary role for Richards will be simplified — catch lobs, defend and rebound at a high level — and the Suns hope his strengths will be amplified playing alongside scorers like Durant and Devin Booker.

Compared to the three other centers on Phoenix’s roster currently, Richards becomes the best in terms of pick-and-roll efficiency and defending the rim:

    1. Richards = 1.17 points per possession + 45.5 DFG% (defended shot attempts)
    2. Ighodaro = 0.95 points per possession + 46.7 DFG%
    3. Plumlee = 1.00 points per possession + 50.7 DFG%
    4. Nurkic = 0.89 points per possession + 49.4 DFG%

Even after trading for Richards, don’t expect the Suns to be done making moves to their roster before the February 6th trade deadline.

Phoenix remains active in their pursuit of Jimmy Butler, per a source, and it could drag all the way until the offseason if Miami plays hardball with their star player. Keeping ahold of their 2031 first-round pick — their only valued tradeable asset remaining — it would very likely have to be included in a deal for Butler in order for a facilitating team to take on Bradley Beal’s remaining contract, which runs through 2027.

Acquiring Richards was the first step of what figures to be an active next few weeks for the Suns, whether it be for a Butler trade or another move on the margins. After prioritizing him in trade talks, Phoenix is eager to see how Richards meshes within their lineup.

The Phoenix Suns have been struggling to find a reliable center to anchor their defense and provide a strong presence in the paint. However, they may have found a solution in Nick Richards, who they recently acquired in a trade.

Richards, a talented young center, has shown promise in his limited playing time with his previous team. He possesses good size, athleticism, and shot-blocking ability, all of which the Suns desperately need in their frontcourt.

With Richards on board, the Suns hope to remedy their center woes and solidify their defense. His presence should help protect the rim, rebound effectively, and provide a scoring threat in the paint.

Fans are optimistic about the potential impact Richards could have on the team and are eager to see how he will contribute to their success. The Suns are hopeful that this acquisition will help them compete at a higher level and make a push for the playoffs.

Only time will tell if Richards can be the answer to the Suns’ center troubles, but the team is confident that they have made a smart move in acquiring him. Stay tuned to see how Richards will make a difference for the Phoenix Suns this season.

Bethenny Frankel’s Legal Woes: The Story Behind the Gag Order

Bethenny Frankel, the former star of “The Real Housewives of New York City,” has found herself in the middle of a legal battle that has taken a surprising turn. The reality TV personality is currently embroiled in a contentious legal dispute with her ex-husband, Jason Hoppy, and the drama has resulted in a gag order being placed on both parties.

The roots of Frankel and Hoppy’s legal woes can be traced back to their divorce in 2012. The couple’s split was anything but amicable, with accusations of infidelity, abuse, and financial mismanagement being thrown around by both parties. The divorce proceedings dragged on for years, with both Frankel and Hoppy fighting tooth and nail for custody of their daughter, Bryn.

In 2017, Frankel and Hoppy finally reached a settlement in their divorce case, but the drama didn’t end there. In 2018, Hoppy was arrested for allegedly harassing and stalking Frankel, and he was subsequently charged with harassment in the second degree and stalking in the fourth degree. Hoppy denied the charges and claimed that Frankel was using the legal system to punish him.

The legal battle between Frankel and Hoppy has only escalated in recent months, with both parties filing multiple lawsuits against each other. The situation reached a boiling point when Frankel filed a motion to have a gag order placed on Hoppy, preventing him from speaking publicly about the ongoing legal proceedings.

The gag order was granted by the court, but Frankel’s legal team soon found themselves on the receiving end of a similar motion from Hoppy’s attorneys. The court ultimately decided to extend the gag order to cover both parties, effectively silencing them from speaking about the case to the media.

The decision to impose a gag order on Frankel and Hoppy has been met with mixed reactions from the public. Some believe that the order is necessary to protect the privacy of both parties and prevent them from further damaging each other’s reputations. Others, however, argue that the gag order is an infringement on free speech and prevents the public from learning the truth about the situation.

Regardless of the opinions on the gag order, one thing is clear: Bethenny Frankel’s legal woes are far from over. The reality TV star may have silenced herself and her ex-husband from speaking publicly about their case, but the drama behind closed doors shows no signs of slowing down. Only time will tell how this legal battle will ultimately unfold.

Injury Woes for Falcons Kicker: What’s Next for the Team?

The Atlanta Falcons have been dealt a major blow with the news that their starting kicker, Younghoe Koo, has suffered an injury that will sideline him for an extended period of time. Koo, who has been one of the most reliable kickers in the league over the past few seasons, was injured during a recent practice session and will now be forced to miss a significant portion of the upcoming season.

This injury comes at a particularly bad time for the Falcons, as they were already dealing with a number of other key injuries to key players on both sides of the ball. The loss of Koo will only further complicate matters for a team that is already struggling to find its footing in a highly competitive NFC South division.

So, what’s next for the Falcons in the wake of this injury to Koo? The team will now have to turn to their backup kicker, Elliott Fry, to handle kicking duties in Koo’s absence. Fry, who has limited NFL experience, will have big shoes to fill as he steps into the starting role for the Falcons.

The Falcons will also need to adjust their game plan to account for the loss of Koo’s reliable leg. Head coach Arthur Smith will likely have to be more aggressive on fourth down situations, as the team may not have the same level of confidence in Fry’s ability to make long-range field goals.

Additionally, the Falcons may need to rely more heavily on their offense to put points on the board, as they may not be able to rely on their kicking game as much as they have in the past. Quarterback Matt Ryan and the rest of the offense will need to step up and deliver in crucial situations to make up for the absence of Koo.

Overall, the injury to Koo is a significant setback for the Falcons, but it is not insurmountable. The team will need to rally together and find ways to overcome this adversity in order to stay competitive in a tough NFC South division. With the right adjustments and a strong team effort, the Falcons can still find success despite this injury setback.
