“I was surprised when he handed it to me, and I asked him why he bought it for me,” she said. “He said it was a ‘just because gift,’ which I though was really nice of him.
“When I scratched the ticket off, I was stunned to see that it was a $4 million winner. I had so many emotions going through my body. I screamed. I cried. I was and still am shocked I won $4 million.”
Her dad purchased the $30 ticket at Light House Liquor located at 13651 W. 9 Mile Road in Oak Park.
The woman recently claimed her prize and opted to receive a one-time lump sum payment of about $2.7 million instead of annuity payments for the full amount.

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A Macomb County woman who uses family members’ birthdays as her lucky numbers won a $219, 683 Fantasy 5 Jackpot from the Michigan Lottery.
Lori Sikora, 66, of Warren, matched the numbers in the Dec. 26 drawing to win the jackpot: 06-13-17-23-26, according to a release from the Michigan Lottery.
She purchased her winning ticket at the Meijer at 34835 Utica Road in Fraser.
“I have played Fantasy 5 for years, and I always select family member’s birthdays as my lucky numbers,” said Sikora. “When I saw the winning numbers, I knew pretty quickly that I had won. I went running to tell my husband and when I got to him, he thought something was wrong.
With her prize money, she plans to take a trip to Las Vegas, remodel her bathroom and throw a baby shower for her daughter.
“Winning is a wonderful feeling,” said Sikora. “Knowing I can help my family means everything to me!”
Each Fantasy 5 play is only $1, and for another $1 per play and EZMatch can be added to a ticket, giving players a chance to instantly win $500. The Double Play can also be added for $1 per play, which gives players the chance to win up to $110,000 in the nightly Double Play drawing.

Woman pardoned for Capitol riot is sentenced in fatal crash
UNION, Mo. — The Franklin County woman pardoned for her participation in the U.S. Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021 was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison for her role in a fatal drunk driving crash.
On Jan. 5, 2022, Emily Hernandez was driving the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 44 for several miles when she crashed into a Buick SUV carrying Victoria “Vickie” N. Wilson, 32, and Ryan E. Wilson, 36. Vickie was killed. Ryan, who was seriously injured and walks with a cane today, said he lives in constant pain.
Ryan Wilson described in court the moments after the crash and how he reached for Vickie in the passenger seat.
“No matter how loud I cried out to her, I couldn’t wake her,” he said. “I couldn’t reach her because of the air bags.”
Hernandez sat stoically, staring ahead with her hands clasped in her lap, as Wilson addressed the court. He was among several of Vickie Wilson’s relatives to address the court.

Her mother, Tonie Donaldson, said Vickie’s death “is the first thing I think about in the morning and the last thing I think about each night.”
“When I lost Vickie, I lost a part of me,” Donaldson said.
Franklin County Judge Ryan Helfrich sentenced Hernandez to 10 years for Vickie’s death and 7 years for injuries caused in the crash. The sentences are to be served concurrently.
A preliminary breath test showed Hernandez had a blood-alcohol content of .20% after the crash, authorities said. The legal limit to drive a vehicle in Missouri is .08%.
Helfrich levied close to the maximum sentence allowed in the two felonies. “Probation is not appropriate given the nature of what happened,” he said.
Hernandez’s attorney had asked for a sentence of 120 days “shock time” in Franklin County’s jail, with credit for the time she spent wearing an electronic monitor, followed by probation. Hernandez had previously rejected a plea deal that would have sentenced her to 12 years in prison.
“What I did was ungodly and I will live with that shame for the rest of my life,” Hernandez said at the sentencing. “I am sorry for what I did and if I could take it all back, I would.”
Hernandez was featured in a photo from the 2021 riots at the U.S. Capitol, holding the nameplate of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She had gone to Washington that day with her uncle and his friend to watch President Donald Trump’s speech and afterward marched with the crowd to the Capitol.
The fatal crash occurred 6 days before Hernandez was scheduled to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of entering and remaining in a restricted building. She was sentenced to 30 days in jail but was pardoned by Trump last week.

Fort Belvoir woman pleads guilty in brutal beating of son | Headlines
A Fort Belvoir woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal charges in connection with a brutal assault on her 10-year-old son, who escaped by climbing out a window and jumping from the roof.
China Ashley Charles, 38, entered the plea on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon; assault by striking, beating, and wounding and cruelty to children, the U.S. District Attorney’s Office in Alexandria said in a release.
According to court documents, on Oct. 8, Charles was enraged at her 10-year-old child because his bedroom was messy. She struck him with a chair, dresser drawers, a hot iron, a charging wire, a hairbrush, and a large serving spoon.
“She attempted to strike his face with the iron, but he blocked it with his hands,” the release said. “When Charles hit the child with the charging wire, his finger was cut and began bleeding.”
Charles tried to hide her crime by making the child sit in a cold bath and splashing cold water on his face, according to court documents.
The child finally dropped onto the roof from his second-floor bedroom and then jumped down from the roof and fled, prosecutors said.
“He was recovered by police with substantial bruises, abrasions, a knot on the back of his head and a cut and bleeding finger,” the release said.
He was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital for treatment.
Law enforcement recovered numerous items from Charles’ home, including the iron, chair, hairbrush, spoon, multiple dresser drawers, and a sweater and a shirt with “I’M ON PUNISHMENT” written on them in black marker.
“Several of these items appeared to have blood on them, and further examination confirmed that the child’s blood was located on the iron and at least one dresser drawer,” the release said. “The child’s sister reported that China had been beating him for the past four years.”
Charles is scheduled to be sentenced on May 9 and faces up to 16 years in prison.
Erik S. Siebert, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Jake Cameron, Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Office, Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division, made the announcement after U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema accepted the plea.
