Akron SWAT standoff ends after 4 hours; man arrested for brutal beating of woman
AKRON, Ohio — Akron police said one man caused a lot of chaos in the Highland Square neighborhood for several hours on Monday.
Investigators believe Thomas Blanton, 37, brutally attacked a woman before barricading himself inside a building for more than four hours.
The ordeal forced a couple from their apartment and led to the closure of Portage Path Elementary School for the day.
According to Captain Michael Miller, Blanton attacked a woman he knows around 2:40 a.m. outside of a Highland Square business on West Market Street.
The woman went to an Akron hospital, and staff reported her injuries to police, Miller said.
“The suspect punched her multiple times in the face. We’re told she sustained multiple serious facial injuries,” Miller said.
After the assault, Blanton entered a former barber shop on the first floor of a building on Highland Avenue, according to investigators.
Kendra Strickland, who lives on the second floor directly above the old barber shop, first heard police around 4 a.m. yelling on a megaphone that the place was surrounded and for someone named “Thomas” to come outside.
About an hour later, a SWAT team urged Strickland and her boyfriend to leave their apartment.
“The came at 5 a.m. and told us to probably leave the building because there’s going to be tear gas to try to get the suspect out,” Strickland said.
The couple went outside and got into a police cruiser while they listened to the drama continue to unfold.
“They had said, ‘OK, we’re releasing the tear gas. OK, he’s down by the back door. We’re gonna see if we can get a shot,’” Strickland recalled.
After trying to negotiate with the suspect for several hours, police tossed tear gas into the building and knocked down a front door.
Blanton tried to get out the back door before returning to the front door and running into the long ramming device on the police department’s “community rescue vehicle,” which had breached the door, Miller explained.
Miller said officers wrestled a gun away from Blanton and arrested him more than four hours after the standoff started.
“It was a very, very volatile situation in that he came out with a firearm— very easily could be a different conversation we’re having,” Miller said
Blanton was taken to a hospital for injuries. According to Miller, he’s facing multiple charges, including felony strangulation, domestic violence and felonious assault.
The victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
For Strickland, the frustration continued hours after the incident was under control because she was unable to stay in her apartment.
“We can only run in briefly and then come back out because the tear gas is making us cry and cough,” she said.
Police said Blanton was involved in a similar standoff with Akron police that started on New Year’s Eve in 2015.
In that case, police tried to serve warrants for kidnapping, domestic violence and assault when Blanton barricaded himself inside a Seward Avenue apartment.
Nearly seven hours later— on New Year’s Day— he surrendered peacefully with the help of his family, police said.
According to court records, he was sentenced to five years in prison in 2016.
Following the Monday standoff in Highland Square, Strickland said she’s grateful things didn’t end even worse.
“They kept us safe, and so we thank them, but it’s still not a great way to start off the week,” Strickland said.
In a recent incident in Akron, a SWAT standoff came to an end after four hours, resulting in the arrest of a man accused of brutally beating a woman. The standoff began when police responded to a domestic violence call at a residence in the area. The suspect barricaded himself inside the home, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcement. After several hours of negotiations, the SWAT team was able to peacefully resolve the situation and take the suspect into custody. The victim, who had suffered serious injuries in the assault, was taken to the hospital for treatment.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of taking swift action to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable. The Akron Police Department is continuing to investigate the case and provide support to the victim.

DETROIT (WWJ) — A Detroit man is facing more than a dozen charges after allegedly shooting at a woman on the freeway in what Michigan State Police officials say is a case of mistaken identity.
James Edward Murden, 32, was arraigned Sunday on 17 total felony charges, including attempted murder and possession of a weapon by a prohibited person.
The shooting happened on Dec. 26 along I-94 near Mt. Elliott, according to MSP.
Authorities say a woman was driving home with her two children in her car the day after Christmas when she was shot.
Investigators used technology to develop Murden as a suspect and later determined that the car the woman was driving was mistaken for another person that the suspect knew, according to MSP.
Officials did not disclose the victim’s condition after the shooting.
Murden has been charged with three counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, eight counts of felony firearm and one count each of carrying a concealed weapon, discharging a weapon at a vehicle and possession of a weapon by a prohibited person.
His bond was set at $300,000 cash or surety. MSP officials did not release any information about his next court date.
MSP officials have not said what led Murden to allegedly open fire on who he thought was a different person in the car.
In a shocking and senseless act of violence, a Detroit man has been accused of shooting at a woman driving with her two young children on I-94. The suspect allegedly believed the woman was someone else and opened fire on her vehicle, putting the lives of the innocent family at risk. The incident occurred on a busy highway, where the woman was driving with her children in the backseat. The suspect, who has not been identified, reportedly fired multiple shots at the woman’s car before fleeing the scene.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the shooting, but the emotional trauma inflicted on the family is immeasurable. The woman and her children were left shaken and terrified by the unprovoked attack.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident and working to apprehend the suspect. It is unclear what motivated the man to target the woman and her children, but the reckless and dangerous nature of his actions is deeply concerning.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the senseless violence that plagues our communities and the need for greater efforts to address and prevent such acts. Our thoughts are with the woman and her children as they recover from this traumatic experience.

Wrong-way driver on I-94 in Oak Creek
A woman from north-central Wisconsin is accused of driving the wrong way on I-94 in Oak Creek with a child in her SUV
Numerous motorists had called 911 about a driver who had entered the Rawson Avenue off-ramp, traveled south against existing traffic and continued south on the shoulder of the northbound lanes of I-94.
The deputy located the vehicle which was then “being operated off-road in the grass” near the church near I-94 and Drexel Avenue. The deputy’s lights and siren were activated — and he ordered the driver to pull over. However, the driver did not stop, but rather re-entered Drexel Avenue and traveled east for a short distance before stopping.
When the deputy approached the vehicle, he determined that the defendant was the driver of the vehicle — and there was a 10-year-old child in the vehicle with her. The deputy noted the defendant “was generally not cooperative but was not intoxicated,” the complaint says.
Wisconsin Department of Transportation cameras captured the wrong-way driving incident. The cameras showed at one point, the defendant “appears to speak with a stopped civilian, then proceeds southbound in the northbound shoulder,” the complaint says.

Kolkata:A probe into actor Saif Ali Khan’s stabbing has led Mumbai Police to question a woman in West Bengal, for allegedly providing a mobile phone SIM card to the Bangladeshi national who had entered the country illegally, and has been arrested for the attack.
Police sources said the woman, Khukumoni Sheikh, is from Chapra in Nadia district and was allegedly known to the accused Bangladeshi national, Sariful Islam.
“The SIM card the accused was using during his stay in India was traced to the woman. The woman is being questioned,” a source said.
Police had earlier said that Islam entered India through Meghalaya seven months ago and stayed in Bengal for a few weeks, before moving to Mumbai in search of a job.
Cops involved in the interrogation of the accused said the 30-year-old crossed the Dawki river, along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya, to illegally enter India. He then changed his name to Bijoy Das and began living in the country.
Police said that during his stay in Bengal, Islam used a local resident’s Aadhaar card to procure a mobile phone SIM card before moving to Mumbai.
“After reaching Mumbai, the accused chose to work in places where he was not required to furnish any documents. He studied till Class 12 in Bangladesh and had come to India in search of a job,” an officer had said on condition of anonymity.
Police also said they have accessed two identity cards that proves Islam is a Bangladeshi – a National Identity Card which says that Islam was born on March 3, 1994, and is the son of Mohammed Ruhul Islam, and a learner’s driving licence which reveals that Islam was a resident of Barisal, a city in south-central Bangladesh.
On January 16, Mr Khan suffered grievous injuries, after he was stabbed six times reportedly by Islam, during a failed burglary attempt at the actor’s 12th floor residence in “Satguru Sharan” building in upscale Bandra.
Multiple teams of the police and the crime branch worked on several inputs and analysed footage from several CCTV cameras to track down the actor’s attacker.
After over 70 hours of an intense manhunt, Islam was arrested from near Hiranandani Estate in Kasarvadavali in Thane, about 35 kilometres from Mr Khan’s house in Bandra, on January 19. He was subsequently remanded in police custody.
In her statement to the police, Mr Khan’s wife and actor Kareena Kapoor Khan recalled the attack on her husband and said she saw the intruder stab him repeatedly. “The attacker was aggressive. I saw him attack Saif repeatedly…Our priority was to take Saif to the hospital,” she said.
A nurse caring for the couple’s younger son Jehangir (Jeh), Eliyama Philips – who first encountered the intruder – said the accused had demanded Rs 1 crore.
Islam, sources earlier said, told police that he stabbed the actor in his back multiple times in an attempt to free himself after he had grabbed hold of him. He also said that he hid in the garden of the building housing Mr Khan flat for around two hours before fleeing the area.
Islam’s father, however, said his son is being framed for reasons unknown to him. “I will get in touch with the Bangladeshi foreign ministry and also seek help from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka for the release of my son,” Mohammed Ruhul Islam said.
The doctors who performed an emergency surgery on Mr Khan had removed a 2.5-inch piece of a broken knife from his spine afterwards. If the knife had pierced 2 mm deeper, it could have caused a severe injury, the doctors had noted. The 54-year-old actor was discharged from hospital and returned home on January 21.
In a shocking turn of events, the Mumbai police’s investigation into the Saif Ali Khan attack case has led them to a woman who may be connected to the incident. The incident, which occurred outside a popular nightclub in Mumbai, saw the Bollywood actor being attacked by a group of men.According to sources, the woman in question is believed to have ties to one of the suspects involved in the attack. The police are currently questioning her to gather more information and determine her role in the incident.
The attack on Saif Ali Khan has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and raised concerns about the safety of celebrities in public spaces. The police are working tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future.
