• The Console Wars Are Over And Nobody Really Won

For decades, a war has been raging online and in stores. A fight between massive corporations trying to sell you plastic boxes that play games and their weirdly dedicated supporters. The fight was always silly, but very real and expensive, involving massive companies spending hundreds of millions of dollars on marketing, game development, and hardware. And for a long time it seemed like the console wars would continue forever. But that’s not what happened.

The conflict has ended. In 2025, it’s all over. You might have missed that because it all didn’t end in a spectacular victory. Instead, the console wars fizzled out for various reasons.

On January 30, Xbox announced plans to bring Forza Horizon 5 to PS5. In doing so, the company essentially gave up one of its biggest console-exclusive franchises to Sony and its PlayStation. This is really strange considering that at one point in time, Sony was Xbox’s bitter competitor.

Xbox dips out of the console war

Internally, before its 2001 launch, the original Xbox was referred to as Project Midway. This was a crass reference to WW2’s Battle of Midway. During that battle, American forces decisively defeated Japan’s navy. The name clearly indicated that Microsoft wanted to enter into a video game console war with Nintendo and Sony, and it wanted to win. And for years, Xbox, Sony, and Nintendo battled each other.

One would lower its price, another would launch a new bundle. One would give away free games to subscribers, another would follow suit. Motion controls were copied. Exclusives were secured. It was a very expensive war that had millions of kids around the world bickering on playgrounds over which was better, as teens and adults did the same on internet forums.

But now, in 2025, Microsoft was willing to give away one of its crown jewels—Forza—to Sony and PlayStation. It’s part of a trend of Xbox making more of its games multiplatform following its purchase of Activision. And rumors are swirling that even more Xbox games and franchises will make the leap to PlayStation and Switch. The Master Chief Collection is likely to arrive on other platforms sooner than later, according to insiders, as is a rumored (but unconfirmed) Gears of War trilogy collection. Insiders are also claiming that Fable and Starfield will be making the leap to PlayStation 5 and Switch 2.

Combine that shift in Xbox’s strategy with Game Pass being available on more devices and the company downplaying console sales for years and years now, and it becomes clear that Microsoft isn’t fighting in the console wars anymore. It arguably hasn’t been for a few years now, but the news of Forza jumping ship should be the confirmation that its flown the white flag and decided to become a massive publisher, harnessing the combined power of Game Pass, all of its studios, and Activision/Blizzard. It’s a strategy that is already paying off, too.

So if Xbox is done fighting, who is left? Well, not Nintendo.

Nintendo isn’t fighting in the war anymore

Yes, the company is releasing a Switch 2 and it’s going to sell incredibly well, assuming tariffs don’t inflate the price too much. But in 2025, Nintendo doesn’t care about the console war.

The Wii U was the last time the company behind Mario arguably tried to compete directly with Sony and Microsoft. It released the Wii U in late 2013, just within a year of the Xbox One and PS4, while trying to court third-party AAA franchises like Mass Effect, Call of Duty, and the Batman: Arkham games.

The Wii U ultimately was a failure for Nintendo and in 2017, it released the Switch, nearly three years before Sony and Xbox’s next consoles, the Xbox Series X/S and PS5, would arrive. Nintendo realized that it could do its own thing. It didn’t need to stick to the hardware cycle of the old console wars, competing directly with other companies every five to seven years. Instead, Nintendo focused on giving fans what they always wanted—a hybrid device merging its portable and home consoles into one—and found incredible success.

The Switch 2, launching later this year, continues to show that Nintendo doesn’t care about the console war. It’s not concerned about when the PS6 or next Xbox arrive. That doesn’t matter. All it has to do is make a new console that people want every several years and make sure it keeps turning out stellar first-party games for the machine. It can focus on itself and not worry about matching GPUs or terraflops with Sony or Xbox in some never-ending console war. And as long as it sells well, third-party publishers and devs will show up with games, even it means cutting them up and squishing them just to make stuff like Harry Potter or Batman work on the Switch’s hardware.

So if Nintendo is out and Xbox isn’t fighting anymore, then that just leaves Sony. And yeah, I think you can argue that Sony and PlayStation are still fighting the war. But if everyone else has left or given up, is it even a war anymore?

Sony is the last soldier fighting

Sony is still spending a lot of money to secure exclusive games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Death Stranding 2. And, unlike Xbox, it’s not publishing its big, first-party games day one on PC or including them in its subscription service, PS Plus, at launch. It also spent millions of dollars developing a new mid-generation console—the PS5 Pro—which makes sense if your competitors are doing the same and you want to keep up with them. However, in 2025 the PS5 Pro feels like Sony firing a very pricey missile into an empty patch of ground. Maybe once upon a time there were tanks and jeeps in that spot. Not anymore, though. Everyone else has moved on.

In a technical sense, Sony has won the console wars because it’s A) Still here and B) the last one fighting. Though its an odd, hollow victory.

While Sony was fighting the old-school console war—holding on to exclusive games tightly and trying to win people over with bigger, more expensive consoles—Xbox went and became one of the biggest third-party game publishers in the world, making millions of dollars via games sold on PlayStation consoles. And Nintendo has been outselling everyone by simply doing its own thing and not engaging in the war. Meanwhile, free-to-play games on phones are making more than all of them on devices that have never been connected to the console wars.

2025 might not be the precise year the console war ended, as it likely ended years ago and what we see now are small skirmishes slowly wrapping up as news reaches each front, conflicts still puttering on though the struggle that once set it all in motion is largely resolved. I’m confident that even if more consoles are released in the future—which they will be—the era of three or more companies spending millions every month to fight each other in multiple ways as synchronized hardware cycles stretch across years is over.

    .

The Console Wars Are Over And Nobody Really Won

For years, gamers have been divided into different camps based on their choice of gaming console. Whether it’s Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo, fans have fiercely defended their favorite platform and engaged in heated debates over which one is superior.

But now, as we enter a new era of gaming with the rise of cloud gaming, cross-platform play, and subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Now, the lines between consoles are becoming increasingly blurred. With more and more games being released on multiple platforms, the exclusivity that once defined the console wars is fading away.

In this new landscape, it’s becoming clear that the concept of “winning” the console wars is outdated and irrelevant. Each platform has its own strengths and weaknesses, and ultimately it comes down to personal preference and individual gaming needs.

So, let’s put an end to the console wars once and for all and embrace the diversity and innovation that each gaming platform brings to the table. Whether you’re a die-hard PlayStation fan, an Xbox loyalist, or a Nintendo enthusiast, let’s celebrate the fact that we all share a love for gaming and the incredible experiences it brings. Let’s focus on enjoying the games, connecting with fellow gamers, and appreciating the unique qualities of each console, rather than getting caught up in pointless arguments about which one is the “best.”

In the end, the true winners of the console wars are the gamers themselves, who have more options, more accessibility, and more amazing games to enjoy than ever before. Let’s come together and celebrate the incredible world of gaming, united by our shared passion and love for this incredible medium.

  • Coworker’s text tipped Mega Millions player to realize he won $1.2 million – NBC Los Angeles

A Southern California man realized he won $1.2 million in the California Lottery Mega Millions after a coworker jokingly texted him about winning.

Michael Chavez said it all happened on election night, Nov. 5, which was also the drawing for the $303 million jackpot.

“I actually woke up in the middle of the night to check the election results to see who won for president, not Mega Millions,” Chavez told the California Lottery.

Chavez said he went back to sleep, but later that morning he remembered he forgot to tell his coworkers that he would not be at work. He then received a funny but life-changing text from his coworker.

“He kidded me if the reason I wasn’t at work was because I had won the million. He even jokingly congratulated me,” Chavez said.

The coworker had even sent him a screenshot of the Mega Millions results.

After taking a close look at the screenshot, Chavez realized he did win the lottery, matching five of the six numbers, a total of $1,214,818.

“I could not believe my eyes,” said Chavez.

The Mega Millions ticket was purchased at Lake Liquor in Lakewood, who will also get $6,000 for selling the winning ticket. The winning numbers for that drawing were 2-24-25-52-58 and the Mega number was 9.

Chavez said had it not been for that text, he doesn’t know when he would have checked the ticket.

“I’ll never forget election night or especially that text,” he said.

Election night was particularly special for one lottery player in Southern California.

Michael Chavez found out he won $1.2 million in the California Lottery Mega Millions on Nov. 5, 2024, after a co-worker joked to him about winning the draw, reported NBC4 Los Angeles and The Sacramento Bee.

“I went back to bed without looking at my ticket,” he added.

The next morning, Chavez texted work to say he would not be coming in that day — and a co-worker jokingly responded that it was because he’d won the lottery, NBC4 Los Angeles reported.

Have you ever had a co-worker joke that someone skipped work because they won the lottery? Well, that’s exactly what happened at our office last week – and it turns out, it was actually true!

We all laughed when our colleague, Steve, called out sick and someone joked that he must have won the lottery and was off living the high life. Little did we know, that was exactly the case.

A few days later, Steve showed up to work looking a little more relaxed than usual. When we asked him how his sick day was, he casually mentioned that he had actually won a substantial amount of money playing the lottery and decided to take a day off to process everything.

Needless to say, we were all shocked and amazed by the news. It just goes to show, you never know what surprises your co-workers might have up their sleeves. Who knows, maybe one of us will be the next lucky winner!

  • Marlee Matlin wanted to speak when ‘CODA’ won Best Picture

Marlee Matlin has never been afraid to speak her mind.

But at the 2022 Oscars, she didn’t get the opportunity to say something she had been aching to share. In the new documentary, Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, Matlin discusses her disappointment at not getting a moment to speak when CODA won Best Picture.

“I was very upset when it went down,” Matlin says in the doc. “I wanted to say thank you for supporting my community and my culture.”

In a clip from the ceremony, the documentary shows producers Philippe Rousselet and Patrick Wachsberger accepting the Oscar. When Wachsberger concludes his remarks, Matlin makes her way to the microphone, but it is already descending into the stage.

In additional footage from backstage that night, Matlin spoke to a reporter and elaborated on what she had hoped to say. For 35 years, she was touted as the only deaf actor to win an Oscar, but when CODA won Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur, she no longer had to be singled out as such.

“I wanted to say I’m not alone anymore,” she told the reporter.

Want more movie news? Sign up for Entertainment Weekly‘s free newsletter to get the latest trailers, celebrity interviews, film reviews, and more.

Actress Lauren Ridloff, who also appears in the doc, notes that the words for “only” and “alone” are quite similar in American Sign Language, making “only” less of an honor and more of a lonely moniker.

Much of CODA‘s success was predicated on Matlin’s recognizability. Additionally, she helped make the film as authentic as it is by threatening to walk off the project if a hearing actor was cast in the role that ultimately went to Troy Kotsur. “They wanted an A-lister for the Troy Kotsur role,” she says in the doc. “I said, ‘If you cast a hearing actor, I’m out.’ That’s the first time I did that in my career.”

Matlin’s words backstage were so important to director Shoshannah Stern that they gave her the title of her documentary. “When I watched CODA win the Oscar, I was watching Marlee,” she tells Entertainment Weekly. “And waiting and looking forward to what she was going to say on stage. Clearly, she had something to say in that moment. And CODA would not be what it was if it wasn’t for Marlee standing up and saying, ‘If you make other decisions, I’m not going to be a part of it.’ And then to see how huge of a success CODA is, the largest part is due to her, and to see her not be able to have the opportunity to speak, it’s sad.”

“I did get to talk at the Screen Actors Guild Awards,” Matlin adds. “I was very grateful to have that opportunity, but at the Oscars, I thought I would have the chance to tell my story briefly on the stage on behalf of the deaf community, but unfortunately, I wasn’t given that chance.”

“I wanted to see what Marlee was going to say,” Stern continues. “And then I found that backstage clip when Marlee says, ‘I’m not alone anymore.’ That captures a huge theme in the film that is usually one that deaf people have — we experienced moments together in the film and I knew that that had to be the title.”

    -With reporting from Calie Schepp

At last night’s Oscars, Marlee Matlin made headlines when she wanted to speak on stage after ‘CODA’ won Best Picture. Matlin, who is deaf and won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in ‘Children of a Lesser God,’ is a vocal advocate for representation and inclusion in Hollywood.

As the cast and crew of ‘CODA’ took the stage to accept their award, Matlin motioned for the microphone, indicating that she had something to say. Despite not being given the opportunity to speak, Matlin’s gesture spoke volumes about the importance of amplifying diverse voices in the film industry.

Many viewers took to social media to express their support for Matlin and praise her for her advocacy. As the conversation around representation and inclusion continues to grow, moments like this serve as a powerful reminder of the work that still needs to be done.

Congratulations to ‘CODA’ on their well-deserved win, and kudos to Marlee Matlin for continuing to use her platform to advocate for change. #RepresentationMatters #Inclusion #Oscars2022

  • ‘We haven’t won anything yet’ – Chelsea boss Bompastor plays it cool after derby victory

‘We haven’t won anything yet’ – Chelsea boss Bompastor plays it cool after derby victory

‘We haven’t won anything yet’ – Chelsea boss Bompastor plays it cool after derby victory

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor said that her side haven’t won anything yet after they defeated Arsenal 1-0 in a Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

Guro Reiten netted the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in-front of a record crowd for a Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Stamford Bridge of 34,302.

The Blues are seven points clear in the title race with just 10 games to play. When speaking in the post-match press conference, head coach Bompastor expressed her satisfaction with the result but emphasised the need to maintain the right mentality for the rest of the season.

“I’m really pleased with the result but as you could see in the game today, it’s a really fine margin between Arsenal and us,” Bompastor said.

“It went our way which I’m really pleased with, but I think if you analyse the performance, it was a tough game and we didn’t control everything in the game. We were able to score which brought us a great result.

“We want to take it game-by-game, making sure we make the right decisions in every game to bring the great results, but we are far away yet to have won something. We haven’t won anything yet, so we need to keep the right mentality.”

Bompastor was pleased with the impact of her game-changers with Lauren James and Guro Reiten being particularly impressive.

She said “I think they have a lot of quality. This is where sometimes as a manager, you have some headaches because you need to decide the starting XI.

“They have the right mentality even if they were frustrated and that’s good. They just thought about the team first and when they were coming in, they had a big impact which is a really, really good thing for me to have in my squad.”

While Chelsea have a seven-point advantage on Manchester United at the top of the table, there are now 10 points between The Blues and London rivals Arsenal. Bompastor again emphasised the importance of keeping the right mentality between now and the end of the season.

She said “In terms of psychological elements, the win is huge, but there are a lot of games to be played. If we keep the right mentality, if we keep almost all the players available, we are in a good position but you never know what can happen in football.”

Chelsea return to Barclays Women’s Super League action on Sunday when they travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa.

Chelsea boss Bompastor plays it cool after derby victory

After a thrilling victory in the derby against our rivals, Chelsea boss Bompastor is keeping a level head. Despite the impressive performance from her team, Bompastor is quick to remind everyone that they haven’t won anything yet.

In a post-match interview, Bompastor praised her players for their hard work and dedication but emphasized the importance of staying focused and not getting ahead of themselves. She knows that the season is long and there are still many challenges ahead.

While the derby victory is certainly a cause for celebration, Bompastor is already looking ahead to the next match and the next opportunity to prove themselves. She knows that complacency is the enemy of success and will not let her team rest on their laurels.

So, while the fans may be buzzing with excitement after the derby win, Bompastor is keeping her cool and reminding everyone that there is still work to be done. With her leadership and determination, Chelsea is sure to continue their success and reach even greater heights.

Book Review: The War I Finally Won by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley – VERY GOOD

I recently finished reading The War I Finally Won by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley and I have to say, it was a truly captivating and emotional read. This novel is a sequel to the highly acclaimed book The War That Saved My Life, and it did not disappoint.

The story follows the journey of Ada, a young girl living in England during World War II. Ada has faced tremendous challenges in her life, including abuse from her mother and a disability that has left her with a limp. Despite these obstacles, Ada is determined to find happiness and freedom.

In The War I Finally Won, Ada continues to navigate the difficulties of war and the complexities of family relationships. Bradley does a fantastic job of delving into Ada’s emotions and struggles, making her a relatable and sympathetic character. The author’s writing is poignant and powerful, drawing readers into Ada’s world and making them feel her joys and sorrows.

Overall, I would highly recommend The War I Finally Won to anyone looking for a moving and beautifully written historical fiction novel. It is a story of resilience, love, and the strength of the human spirit. I give this book a solid rating of VERY GOOD and urge you to pick up a copy for yourself.

Andre Iguodala is set to become the seventh player to have his number retired by the Golden State Warriors.

The Warriors will retire Iguodala’s No. 9 after a home game against the Dallas Mavericks on Feb. 23, the team announced Tuesday.

    Marc J. Spears @MarcJSpears

The Warriors will retire Andre Iguodala’s #9 jersey on Feb. 23, following the team’s game against the Mavericks at Chase Center, making him just the seventh player in Warriors franchise history to have his jersey number retired by the organization: pic.twitter.com/twswTQALjW

Iguodala reached six NBA Finals, earned the 2015 NBA Final MVP award and won four championships with the Warriors. He played seven seasons over two separate stints with the franchise before retiring after his 19th NBA season in 2023.

The Warriors acquired Iguodala in a sign-and-trade deal in July 2013. He went on to play a key role in the Warriors’ run to the 2015 title, defending LeBron James to help the franchise earn their first championship since 1975.

Iguodala retired as one of the most productive postseason competitors in Warriors history, ranking top-five in assists, steals and three-pointers made through 111 playoff games with the franchise.

“Andre will go down as one of the smartest, shrewdest and most unique and successful players ever to wear a Warriors uniform,” Warriors CEO Joe Lacob said in a statement. “We thought all of that could be true when we acquired him in 2013, but the reality—four titles, six Finals appearances, a Finals MVP—exceeded even our wildest imaginations.

“He was the perfect player and person at the perfect time for our team, and the sacrifice he made in coming off the bench in 2014 sent a message that he came here to help us do one thing: win. The proof is in the rafters, and his number belongs alongside the banners he helped us raise.”

The Warriors have previously retired six numbers. Iguodala is now set to join Wilt Chamberlain’s No. 13, Tom Meschery’s No. 14, Alvin Attles’ No. 16, Chris Mullin’s No. 17, Rick Barry’s No. 24 and Nate Thurmond’s No. 42 in the rafters at Chase Center.

Iguodala is the first, and won’t be the last, member of the Warriors roster that won four titles between 2015 and 2022 to see his number retired by the franchise. Klay Thompson’s No. 11, Draymond Green’s No. 23, Kevin Durant’s No. 35 and Stephen Curry’s No. 30 are candidates for the honor following the conclusion of their NBA careers.

The Mavericks and Warriors tip off at 3:30 p.m. ET. Thompson, who was also with the Warriors for all four title runs before joining the Mavs ahead of the 2024-25 season, is set to be in attendance for Iguodala’s jersey raising.

The Golden State Warriors have announced that they will be retiring Andre Iguodala’s No. 9 jersey in honor of his contributions to the team. Iguodala, who was a key player in the Warriors’ 2015 NBA Finals victory, will forever be remembered for his incredible performance during that championship run.

Iguodala was named the 2015 NBA Finals MVP after averaging 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game in the series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. His clutch plays and defensive prowess were instrumental in helping the Warriors secure their first championship in 40 years.

Throughout his six seasons with the Warriors, Iguodala was known for his versatility, leadership, and unselfish play. He was a key component of the team’s “Death Lineup” and played a crucial role in their three NBA championships in 2015, 2017, and 2018.

Warriors fans will always remember Iguodala for his memorable moments on the court, including his game-winning three-pointer in Game 2 of the 2019 NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors.

Iguodala’s jersey retirement ceremony is set to take place during the upcoming 2022-2023 NBA season, where he will join the likes of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, and Draymond Green in the rafters of the Chase Center.

Book Review: The War I Finally Won by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

I recently finished reading The War I Finally Won by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, and I must say, it was a truly incredible read. This novel is the sequel to the critically acclaimed The War That Saved My Life, and it does not disappoint.

The story follows the life of Ada Smith, a young girl with a clubfoot who has endured years of abuse and neglect at the hands of her mother. In this sequel, we see Ada continue to navigate the challenges of her new life with her adopted family during World War II in England.

Bradley’s writing is both poignant and powerful, as she delves into themes of resilience, family, and the impact of war on individuals. Ada’s journey is one of growth and self-discovery, and her strength and courage are truly inspiring.

The characters are well-developed and the historical setting is vividly brought to life. Bradley’s attention to detail and her ability to evoke emotion make this novel a compelling and unforgettable read.

I highly recommend The War I Finally Won to anyone looking for a moving and thought-provoking historical fiction novel. It is a story of triumph, resilience, and the power of love, and it is a book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

X Games Aspen 2025 opened with knuckle huck competitions on a cold Thursday evening under the lights at Buttermilk Ski Area. Leading the eight-women field was Rell Harwood of Park City, Utah, last year’s silver medalist. Alex Hall, another Park City product, was the men’s gold medalist.

Run in a 20-minute jam format, with as many runs as time permits, knuckle huck is judged on style and finesse, creativity, originality, and overall impression. Competitors use the “knuckle” of the bottom jump of the slopestyle course as the platform for their tricks.

“I pop off my nose and I do two-and-a-half spins and I land a switch,” she said in describing her favorite of the four runs. “It’s really fun to do.”

Her “butters” — where a skier puts pressure on tips of their skis, the tails then come off the ground, allowing them to spin on the tip of their skis — were strong.

Tereza Korabova from the Czech Republic won silver with creative runs that featured a nose butter 360 and a hand drag with a flip. The women’s bronze X Games medal went to Anni Karava from Finland, whose second run featured a massive 720.

Karava said she had few expectations.

“I just went into it to have fun, and that’s what I did,” she said. “This is just so sick.”

In winning his 12th X Games medal – six of which are gold — Hall put on a style clinic, executing a switch move with a hand movement that his coach Hunter Hess dubbed a “turtle roll slide.” Hall, who is competing in four events this weekend, followed that with a huge 1080.

“I really liked my last trick just because I went big and it was scary, but I landed, so it was fun,” he said.

Finishing second was Matej Svancer from Austria.

“I felt more nervous because I’ve never done any of the four tricks today,” he said.

Near the end of the men’s knuckle huck jam session, Juho Saastamoinen from Finland moved into third, cementing his podium finish with a unique ballet skiing move.
