  • Dave Matthews won’t perform at FireAid or a MusiCares benefit, citing a critical family illness

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dave Matthews will no longer perform at FireAid, a star-studded benefit concert organized for Los Angeles-area wildfire relief, or the MusiCares Person of the Year benefit gala this week.

According to a post shared to the official Dave Matthews Band Instagram account, “due to a critical illness in the family,” Matthews is no longer able to perform at either event.

A representative for the band told The Associated Press there will be no further comment.

At FireAid, Matthews was scheduled to perform at the Kia Forum alongside John Mayer for the first time.

All proceeds from FireAid will benefit those affected by the fires. A 501(c)(3) was set up, and contributions to FireAid will be distributed under the Annenberg Foundation, which with FireAid has assembled a small committee to advise.

On Friday, Matthews was slated to perform at MusiCares’ 2025 Persons of the Year benefit gala honoring the Grateful Dead.

MusiCares is an organization that helps music professionals who need financial, personal or medical assistance.

Earlier in the month, the Recording Academy — the people behind the Grammys — and its affiliated MusiCares launched the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort with a $1 million dollar donation. According to a letter sent to members on Jan. 13, thanks to additional contributions, they’ve already distributed $2 million in emergency aid. Currently, they’ve raised and pledged more than $4 million in emergency aid to those in the music industry affected by the wildfires.

It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that Dave Matthews will not be able to perform at FireAid or any MusiCares benefit events in the near future. Due to a critical family illness, Dave is unable to commit to any additional performances at this time.

We ask for understanding and support during this difficult time for Dave and his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate through this challenging situation.

Please continue to show your support for FireAid and MusiCares, as these organizations work tirelessly to provide aid and assistance to those in need within the music community.

    Thank you for your understanding.

  • Former Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy won’t coach this season, will focus on 2026 hiring cycle

This is not the first time McCarthy has opted to take a breather from the coaching world after departing from a team. After he was fired by the Packers during the 2018 season, McCarthy didn’t return to the sidelines until 2020 with Dallas.

He spent five seasons as the Cowboys head coach, accumulating a 49-35 record with the team and leading it to three postseason appearances, though Dallas never advanced beyond the Divisional Round. Between his time in Green Bay and Dallas, McCarthy led his teams to 12 postseason trips in 18 seasons at the helm, including winning Super Bowl XLV with the Packers.

His résumé should make McCarthy a strong candidate in next offseason’s hiring cycle, though that’s still a long way away. For now, the 2025 NFL season will go forth without McCarthy as a participant.

Former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has announced that he will not be coaching this upcoming season, choosing instead to focus on preparing for the 2026 hiring cycle. After being let go by the Cowboys earlier this year, McCarthy has decided to take a step back from coaching in order to evaluate his options and plan for his next coaching opportunity.

McCarthy’s decision comes as a surprise to many, as he is a highly respected coach with a successful track record in the NFL. However, he believes that taking some time off from coaching will allow him to recharge and come back even stronger for the next hiring cycle.

While McCarthy will not be on the sidelines this season, he remains committed to the game of football and is eager to get back into coaching when the time is right. In the meantime, he will be keeping a close eye on the league and preparing for his next opportunity to lead a team to success.

Fans and colleagues alike are eager to see what the future holds for Mike McCarthy and are excited to see where his coaching career will take him next.

  • DR Congo’s president says country won’t be humiliated after rebels claim takeover

    CNN
     —

Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi has vowed “a vigorous and coordinated response” against a rebel alliance that has besieged swathes of the nation’s mineral-rich east and forced hundreds of local troops to surrender.

In a defiant televised address on Wednesday, Tshisekedi declared that his country would not be “humiliated or crushed” as regional leaders push for negotiations with the rebels.

Goma, the largest city in eastern DR Congo’s North Kivu province, fell under the control of the AFC/M23 rebel coalition on Monday, the rebels told CNN. This was the latest in a string of territorial acquisitions by the group in recent weeks. The Congolese government has not confirmed the rebels’ takeover in Goma but acknowledged the city was under siege.

According to multiple local reports, the rebels are also advancing toward the center of the neighboring South Kivu after seizing towns in the province.

The Congolese government accused its neighbor Rwanda of equipping the M23 with both weapons and troops. Rwanda does not deny the allegations but has criticized DR Congo for collaborating with a Hutu militia group against a mainly Tutsi rebel group, the CNDP, which M23 grew out of.

Hutu militias carried out the genocide of Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda in 1994.

Tshisekedi was not present when East African leaders met on Wednesday to find solutions to the crisis. At that meeting, they urged him “to directly engage with all stakeholders, including the M23 and other armed groups that have grievances.”

Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who attended the meeting, said the only path to peace was for all parties to engage in dialogue and for mediators to understand the context of the conflict.

Several people, including foreign peacekeepers, have reportedly died and hundreds more are injured as Congolese forces battle to push back against the rebels.

In Goma, where residents told CNN that fighting has persisted, hundreds of government troops have been disarmed by M23, according to the Uruguayan army, whose troops are part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the area.

Foreign mercenaries believed to be helping DR Congo’s army have also surrendered, according to Rwanda’s military, which said Wednesday it “received and escorted over 280 Romanian mercenaries who had been fighting alongside the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) in Eastern part of DRC.”

CNN has contacted the Congolese military for comment on its alleged use of mercenaries.

As tensions boil over in eastern DR Congo, authorities are faced with “two possible scenarios that may unfold,” according to an analysis by Ladd Serwat, a senior African analyst for ACLED, a UK-based group that collects data on violent conflict.

“The control of Goma by M23 and Rwanda Defense Force could push the Congolese government and regional allies to negotiate,” Serwat said. Otherwise, he added, “Kinshasa could push for a military solution and widen the conflict through increased battles to retake Goma and cross-border attacks into Rwanda.”

Tshisekedi has previously threatened to go to war with Rwanda. Kagame has responded in kind.

“We are ready to fight,” Kagame told French network France 24 in June last year, adding: “We are not afraid of anything.”

In a recent statement, DR Congo’s President has declared that the country will not be humiliated after rebels claimed to have taken over certain areas. The President assured the citizens that the government is taking necessary measures to ensure the safety and stability of the nation.

The rebels, known as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), have reportedly seized control of several towns in the eastern part of the country. This has raised concerns about the security situation in the region, as the ADF is known for its brutal attacks on civilians.

President emphasized that the government is committed to protecting the sovereignty and integrity of the country. He urged the citizens to remain calm and vigilant, and assured them that the authorities are working tirelessly to address the situation.

The international community has also expressed concerns about the escalating violence in DR Congo. Several countries and organizations have offered support to help the government in its efforts to combat the rebels and restore peace in the region.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize the safety and well-being of the Congolese people. The President’s firm stance on not allowing the country to be humiliated sends a strong message that DR Congo will not back down in the face of threats to its security and stability.

  • Arne Slot’s Liverpool are the real deal, but Man City won’t get near a second European crown! Winners and losers of UEFA’s polarising inaugural Champions League league phase

The competition’s new format has thrown up plenty of drama so far, even if the stakes didn’t feel quite as high as previous years’ group stages

So there we have it. After five gruelling months and 144 games, including 18 in one night on Wednesday, the inaugural Champions League league phase is finally over.

The final matchday certainly delivered on the entertainment front, with 64 goals smashed in, including five in Liverpool’s clash with PSV in Eindhoven, six in Aston Villa’s home win over Celtic, and seven in Lille’s demolition of Feyenoord. “It was a little bit chaotic at times because there were goals going in everywhere,” former Rangers striker Ally McCoist said on TNT Sports. “I don’t think I would be able to watch just the one game in my house, on my sofa, ever again. It was sensational.”

It’s difficult to argue with that assessment, but the journey beforehand was a real slog. We still have another 16 games to get through before the round of 16, too, with the play-off knockout round set to be played in mid-February.

Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille and Villa don’t have to worry about that; they are automatically through after finishing in the top eight. But a host of other huge clubs underperformed as the overall competitiveness levels on the elite European stage dropped significantly.

The argument over whether the new format can be considered an immediate success will very much depend on allegiances, and with that in mind, GOAL brings you the winners and losers from the 2024-25 league phase…

Arne Slot’s Liverpool have been on fire in the inaugural Champions League league phase, showcasing their dominance and proving themselves as serious contenders for European glory. With their attacking prowess and solid defense, they have proven that they are the real deal and a force to be reckoned with in the competition.

On the other hand, Manchester City have not been as impressive, struggling to find their rhythm and consistency in the group stages. Despite their strong squad and talented players, they have fallen short in their performances and it seems unlikely that they will be able to challenge for a second European crown this season.

The winners of the league phase have been teams like Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea, who have all shown their class and quality in their performances. These teams have been able to navigate through tough groups and secure their spots in the knockout stages, setting themselves up for a potential deep run in the competition.

On the other hand, teams like Barcelona, Manchester United, and Juventus have been the losers of the league phase, failing to live up to expectations and struggling to secure their spots in the knockout stages. These teams will need to regroup and improve if they want to have any chance of making a run in the competition.

Overall, the inaugural Champions League league phase has been filled with exciting matchups, surprising results, and standout performances. As we head into the knockout stages, it will be interesting to see which teams will rise to the occasion and which teams will falter under the pressure. One thing is for sure, Arne Slot’s Liverpool are looking like serious contenders, while Manchester City will have a tough road ahead if they want to secure a second European crown.

  • Shohei Ohtani return to pitching won’t be stopped by Dodgers additions for one reason

The Los Angeles Dodgers ran the gauntlet and won the World Series in 2024, all with Shohei Ohtani relegated to exclusively the DH role. The $700 million man, recovering from his second major elbow surgery, was therefore a “position player” by default.

Now, with Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki on their way and a revamped bullpen in tow, some were wondering if Ohtani might transition to the DH role full-time and forgo his two-way status. The 30-year-old appeared to benefit from his laser focus on hitting, putting together his best individual campaign to date as the leadoff hitter in baseball’s least forgiving lineup.

Ohtani slashed .310/.390/.646 with 54 home runs and 130 RBI on his way to a third MVP award. He also stole 59 bases, just to rub it in. The Dodgers’ offense was an unrivaled buzzsaw, with Ohtani dominating in front of the protective blanket provided by Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman.

That said, the Dodgers are going to pitch Ohtani in 2025 — and the reasons extend beyond his well-documented utility on the mound.

For more news and rumors, check out MLB Insider Robert Murray’s work on The Baseball Insiders podcast, subscribe to The Moonshot, our weekly MLB newsletter, and join the discord to get the inside scoop between now and the MLB offseason.

Sure, Ohtani is a great pitcher at full strength, but there is understandable trepidation about pushing him too hard after another elbow surgery. The Dodgers can also field a more-than-competent five-man rotation without Ohtani. Snell, Sasaki, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, maybe even Clayton Kershaw? Most teams would kill for such a deep and accomplished group.

Why risk it then? Well, one, because Ohtani is as good as anybody on the mound when he’s humming. And two, because the Dodgers will benefit from the roster flexibility inherent to Ohtani as a “two-way” player.

Ken Rosenthal explained it around the 19:49 mark of the latest Foul Territory episode.

Once Ohtani pitches 20 innings and logs at least 20 games with at least three at-bats — a milestone he should clear fairly early in the season — he can officially be logged as a two-way player on the Dodgers roster. That effectively allows Los Angeles to roster 14 pitchers, one more than the standard limit of 13 on an MLB roster.

That is an incredible advantage only the Dodgers will receive, on top of the myriad other perks inherent to being baseball’s biggest spender. Few assets are more valuable to a contender than pitching depth. Los Angeles has already shelled out top dollar not only to bolster its starting rotation, but to equip its bullpen.

By designating Ohtani as a two-way player, the Dodgers will be able to roster 13 pitchers in addition to Ohtani. That helps insure against injuries and gives Los Angeles a leg up on the competition not only for the regular season, but in the playoffs as well.

Ohtani made 23 starts on the mound in his final season with the Angels, posting a 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts across 132.0 innings. That alone is enough to convince folks that Ohtani can (and should) pitch. That it also boosts LA’s depth is the cherry on top of a gluttonous, borderline unfair sundae.

Shohei Ohtani return to pitching won’t be stopped by Dodgers additions for one reason: his unmatched versatility.

The Los Angeles Dodgers may have bolstered their pitching staff with the acquisitions of Max Scherzer and Trea Turner, but Ohtani’s unique skill set as a two-way player sets him apart from the rest.

Ohtani has proven time and time again that he can excel both on the mound and at the plate, showcasing his dominance as both a pitcher and a hitter. His ability to throw triple-digit fastballs and hit towering home runs makes him a rare talent in the world of baseball.

While the Dodgers may have added some firepower to their roster, Ohtani’s versatility and talent make him a force to be reckoned with on the field. His return to pitching will only further solidify his status as one of the game’s most exciting and dynamic players.

So, while the Dodgers may have made some impressive moves, Ohtani’s unmatched versatility and talent will ensure that his return to the mound won’t be stopped by any additions the Dodgers make.

  • Obsidian Says Avowed Won’t Be Open World, But That’s A Good Thing

Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming first-person RPG, Avowed, is scheduled for release on February 18, 2025. The game will be available on PC and Xbox Series X|S platforms, including Windows, Steam, and Battle.net. Avowed is set in the world of Eora, which is the same universe as Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity series, providing players with a new perspective on this rich fantasy setting.

Disclosure: Our editors independently select and evaluate products. If you purchase through our links we may earn a small commission that helps support our research.

While Avowed is highly anticipated in the 2025 video game release calendar, it will not be an open-world game due to concerns about pacing. Developers have stated that managing player experiences in an open-world environment can be challenging, as it’s difficult to track where players are and what they are doing at any given time.

Players can expect a combination of magic and firearms in Avowed‘s gameplay. Obsidian Entertainment is known for creating detailed and immersive worlds, as demonstrated in their previous titles like The Outer Worlds and Grounded. This expertise indicates that Avowed will feature a deep and engaging fantasy environment for players to explore.

Pre-orders for Avowed are now open, and the game will be accessible through Xbox Game Pass on release day. A Premium Edition will also be available, offering early access and additional content for dedicated fans who wish to experience the Living Lands of Eora before the official launch.

You can also pick up the game for Xbox on Amazon: https://amzn.to/40CUGqA

Or for PC on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2457220/Avowed/

Avowed’s Focused Scope: Why It Could Be a Strength

The Shift Away From Open World

Initially, Avowed was planned as a massive open-world game. However, Obsidian Entertainment has since adjusted its approach. The game will still feature large, explorable zones, but it won’t be a fully seamless open world. This change might seem like a downgrade to some, but it could actually be a smart move. Open-world games can sometimes suffer from bloated content and a lack of focus. By narrowing the scope, Obsidian can concentrate on crafting a more compelling narrative and richer character development. This approach aligns with Obsidian’s strengths, as they are known for their engaging stories and memorable characters, as seen in games like Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds.

    Focus on Story and Characters

Avowed’s more focused structure allows Obsidian to dedicate more resources to what they do best: creating compelling narratives and building meaningful character relationships. The game’s story revolves around a mysterious plague called the “Dream Scourge” and the player’s role as an envoy investigating its origins. Companion characters will play a vital role, each with their own backstories, motivations, and questlines. This emphasis on narrative and character development could make Avowed a more memorable and impactful experience than a sprawling, but less focused, open-world game.

    Combat and Gameplay Mechanics

Avowed features first-person combat, with the option to switch to a third-person perspective. Players can wield a variety of weapons, including swords, guns, and magic. Combining these different combat styles will be key to success. The game also includes a range of spells and abilities, allowing players to customize their playstyle. While the shift away from a full open world might mean less overall exploration, it could also lead to more polished and refined gameplay mechanics within the areas that are available.

    Comparison with Other Obsidian Games

Obsidian’s previous titles offer some clues about what to expect from Avowed. Pillars of Eternity showcased their ability to craft rich and detailed worlds with deep lore. The Outer Worlds demonstrated their talent for creating engaging characters and branching narratives. Avowed appears to be combining these elements, taking place in the familiar Eora setting of Pillars of Eternity but with a greater emphasis on action and first-person combat, similar to The Outer Worlds.

    Avowed vs. Other RPGs

The RPG market is crowded with open-world giants. By focusing on a tighter, more narrative-driven experience, Avowed could carve out its own niche. Games like The Witcher 3 and Elden Ring offer vast open worlds, but their sheer size can sometimes be overwhelming. Avowed’s more focused approach could offer a more manageable and intimate experience, allowing players to become more invested in the story and characters.

    Feature Avowed Typical Open-World RPG
World Structure Large zones, not fully open world Seamless, fully open world
Focus Narrative, characters, refined combat Exploration, breadth of content
Pacing Potentially more focused and directed Potentially more sprawling and less directed

The Living Lands: A New Region of Eora

Avowed takes place in the Living Lands, a new region of the Eora setting familiar to fans of Pillars of Eternity. This new locale gives Obsidian the opportunity to expand upon existing lore and introduce fresh stories and characters. While connected to the Pillars of Eternity universe, Avowed is designed to be accessible to new players, so prior knowledge of those games isn’t required.

    Looking Ahead

Avowed’s release on Xbox Series X/S and PC, including day one availability on Game Pass, positions it for a wide audience. Its performance will be a key indicator of Obsidian’s continued success and could influence the direction of future projects. While no sequels or spin-offs have been announced, the rich world of Eora offers ample opportunities for future stories.

The Importance of Scope in RPGs

Sometimes, bigger isn’t always better. In the world of RPGs, a focused scope can be a powerful tool. By concentrating on narrative, character development, and refined gameplay, Avowed has the potential to deliver a more impactful and memorable experience. It demonstrates that a game doesn’t need a massive open world to be a great RPG.

    The Appeal of First-Person RPGs

Avowed’s first-person perspective is a key part of its identity. This viewpoint can create a more immersive experience, drawing players deeper into the game world and allowing them to connect more closely with their character. First-person RPGs have a long and storied history, with games like The Elder Scrolls series and Deus Ex setting the standard for immersive storytelling and player agency. Avowed aims to build on this legacy, offering a fresh take on the first-person RPG genre. While some players may prefer the tactical overview of a third-person perspective, the first-person view can enhance the sense of presence and make combat feel more visceral. It’s a design choice that can significantly impact the player’s experience, and in the case of Avowed, it seems to be a deliberate move to create a more intimate and engaging adventure.

    Game Overview

Avowed is an upcoming fantasy RPG set in the world of Eora. It combines magic and firearms in a first-person perspective, offering players a unique blend of combat and exploration.

    Setting and Lore

Avowed takes place in the Living Lands, a frontier region of the Eora universe. This area is known for its untamed wilderness and dangerous creatures. Players will navigate through diverse landscapes, from dense forests to ancient ruins.

The game’s story revolves around the Aedyr Empire’s attempts to colonize the Living Lands. Political intrigue and cultural conflicts play a significant role in the narrative. Players will encounter various factions and make choices that impact the game world.

Obsidian Entertainment, known for their rich storytelling, has crafted a deep lore for Avowed. The game builds upon the established history and mythology of the Pillars of Eternity series.

    Gameplay and Mechanics

Avowed features a first-person combat system that blends magic and traditional weaponry. Players can wield swords, bows, and guns alongside powerful spells. The dual-wielding mechanic allows for creative combinations of weapons and magic.

Character customization is a key aspect of Avowed. Players can choose from various classes and skill trees to create a unique playstyle. The game emphasizes player choice, with dialogue options and quest decisions impacting the story and world.

Exploration plays a crucial role in Avowed. The game world is filled with secrets to uncover and side quests to complete. Players can interact with NPCs, collect resources, and solve puzzles throughout their journey.

    Development and Release

Obsidian Entertainment is developing Avowed using Unreal Engine 5. This advanced game engine allows for stunning visuals and improved performance on next-gen consoles and PC.

The game’s release date is set for February 18, 2025. It will be available on PC and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox Game Pass subscribers will have access to Avowed on day one.

A Premium Edition of Avowed offers early access starting February 13, 2025. This version includes bonus content such as premium skin packs and a digital artbook.

Obsidian has been releasing regular updates about the game’s development. Trailers and gameplay footage have showcased the combat system and the game’s visual style.

    Availability and Editions

Obsidian Says Avowed Won’t Be Open World, But That’s A Good Thing

In a recent interview with Obsidian Entertainment, developers of the highly anticipated RPG Avowed, it was revealed that the game will not be open world. While some fans may be disappointed by this news, Obsidian assures players that this decision was made with careful consideration and will ultimately lead to a more immersive and engaging experience.

According to Obsidian, the decision to not make Avowed open world was made in order to focus on creating a more densely packed and detailed world for players to explore. By designing a more compact and curated environment, the developers believe they can deliver a more polished and cohesive gameplay experience.

Additionally, the developers emphasized that Avowed will still offer plenty of exploration and player choice within its more structured world. Players can expect a wide variety of quests, factions, and secrets to uncover as they journey through the game’s setting of Eora.

Overall, while some may be disappointed by the lack of an open world in Avowed, it’s clear that Obsidian has put a lot of thought into this decision and is committed to delivering a high-quality RPG experience. So, while the game may not be open world, there’s still plenty to look forward to when Avowed is released.

  • Democratic Sen. Gary Peters won’t run for re-election in battleground Michigan

Democratic Sen. Gary Peters announced Tuesday that he won’t run for re-election in Michigan in 2026, creating a pivotal open-seat election next year in one of the most tightly divided swing states in the United States.

Peters made the announcement in an interview with The Detroit News, in which he said he wouldn’t resign but won’t seek re-election because he “never saw service in Congress as something you do your whole life.”

“I always thought there would be a time that I would step aside and pass the reins for the next generation,” he told the paper.

“I think this is pretty normal for everybody to say, I’ve done a job, and I’m proud of the job I did, but there are other things I want to do in my life. There are other ways that I can give back to the community.”

Peters also released a video and press release announcing his decision.

Peters’ decision will have implications for the fight for control of the Senate in two years and, potentially, for Michigan’s closely watched race for governor. Republicans currently hold 53 seats in the Senate, plus the tie-breaking vice presidency. Peters’ retirement in a state Donald Trump has twice won narrowly (and lost once) could add another degree of difficulty to his party’s efforts to win the majority.

Peters has repeatedly faced tough election fights in the competitive state. So while his race would have likely been competitive if he decided to run again, the open race only raises the likelihood of a competitive Senate election in Michigan next year, when it could be one of the top battlegrounds on the Senate map.

A big field of potential candidates for Senate and governor

It’s unclear who might run to replace Peters from either party. To the extent people in Michigan were looking forward to 2026 elections already, much of the attention in the state has been focused right now on the wide-open race for governor, since two-term Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is term-limited.

Whitmer said in a statement issued by a spokesperson for her political group, Fight Like Hell, that she wouldn’t seek Peters’ seat.

“Governor Whitmer is grateful for Senator Peters’ service,” the spokesperson said. “She is proudly serving the people of Michigan as governor and is not running for this seat in the Senate.”

Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is the only major Democrat in the race for governor right now, while Michigan state Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt is the only major GOP candidate in the race. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, a former Democrat, left the party and is mounting an independent bid.

But many potential candidates on both sides of the aisle were expected to consider running for governor. It’s possible the opening could sway some of those politicians to decide to mount a Senate bid instead.

On the Democratic side, possible gubernatorial contenders include Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist; former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who moved to the state a few years ago (his husband grew up in Michigan); and state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, a member of the Democratic leadership in the Senate whose influence has grown in the state after she delivered a buzzy floor speech pushing back against Republicans who claimed her party wanted to indoctrinate children.

And the Republican side could get crowded too — there are a number of current or former GOP members of Congress who could be strong candidates if they decide to run, and candidates for governor in 2022 who may want to try to run again.

Now that the Senate race is open, it could serve as another release valve for pent-up political ambition among Michigan Democrats and Republicans.

GOP Rep. John James, for example, ran in two of the last three Senate elections, though it’s unclear whether he’d want to run again this year. A Republican Senate strategist keeping tabs on the race told NBC News they’re keeping an eye specifically on James, as well as former Rep. Mike Rogers (who ran in 2024) and current Rep. Bill Huizenga.

Republican Rep. Lisa McClain, the House Republican Conference Chair, told reporters that she wouldn’t run for the Senate and that she is “happy here” in the House.

Tudor Dixon, a political commentator who lost to Whitmer in the 2022 governor’s race, acknowledged Tuesday that she is considering entering the GOP Senate primary.

“I appreciate the outpouring of support and am considering our future very seriously,” Dixon said on X.

A source familiar with Buttigieg’s thinking confirmed that he is “exploring all options on how he can be helpful and continue to serve.”

“He’s honored to be mentioned for this, and he’s taking a serious look,” the source added.

A source close to Gilchrist made it clear that he’s considering a Senate bid too, amid the open gubernatorial race.

“This is a pivotal time for Michigan and the country, and while he’s working with Governor Whitmer to make progress for Michigan he’s seriously considering running for this open Senate seat,” the source said.

McMorrow told NBC News that she is looking at both the gubernatorial and the Senate races and plans to “have a number of conversations in the coming days about where I can do the most good for Michiganders.”

Rep. Hillary Scholten, D-Mich., who won her second term last fall in a Grand Rapids-area district, also is looking at the Senate race, a source close to her said.

As for Gilchrist, if he chooses to run for the Senate instead of governor next year, the Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association is prepared to spend seven figures in the primary on his behalf, said the group’s executive director, Kevin Holst.

Dennis Lennox, a GOP consultant with extensive Michigan experience, noted that Sen. Elissa Slotkin enjoyed a relatively clear Democratic primary field in her successful bid to succeed Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who retired.

“Democrats in Michigan are institutionally stronger, and clearing the field will help their eventual nominee,” said Lennox, who mentioned Buttigieg as a strong candidate.

Lennox went on to mention James as a potential candidate for either post and wondered whether Huizenga or Rep. John Moolenaar would want to give up their House seats if James doesn’t run for the Senate.

“There isn’t much of a Republican bench, although Michigan is one of those states where there’s perennially an outside business kind of candidate who self-funds,” he said, mentioning former RNC and Michigan GOP Chair Ronna McDaniel as a “wild card” possibility.

    Peters’ rise in politics

Peters told The Detroit News he wouldn’t run for another public office in 2026 and is focused on finishing his Senate term.

A former state senator, Naval Reserve officer and head of the state’s lottery, Peters arrived in Washington in 2009 after defeating a GOP incumbent in an Oakland County-area House race. He won a tough re-election in 2010 amid the Republican wave that year before winning a difficult Democratic primary after redistricting threw him into a district with another incumbent.

He then won a campaign to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Carl Levin in 2014, earning a second term in a hard-fought race against James in 2020.

Peters holds pivotal committee posts in the Senate, on the Appropriations, Armed Services and Commerce, Science and Transportation committees. And he served two stints leading the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Under his leadership in 2022, Democrats expanded their majority in an election cycle many had expected would be difficult for his party.

Two years later, Democrats lost control of the Senate. Besides losing seats in deep-red West Virginia in 2024, Montana and Ohio, Democratic Sen. Bob Casey also lost in Pennsylvania, but Democrats kept Senate seats in other battlegrounds Trump won, including Michigan.

Democratic Sen. Gary Peters announced today that he will not seek re-election in Michigan, a crucial battleground state in the upcoming 2022 midterm elections. Peters, who has served in the Senate since 2015, cited personal reasons for his decision to step down.

Peters, a moderate Democrat known for his bipartisan approach to governance, was facing a tough re-election battle in a state that narrowly voted for President Joe Biden in 2020. His departure leaves a significant void in the Democratic Party’s efforts to retain control of the Senate.

In a statement, Peters thanked his constituents for their support and pledged to continue working on behalf of Michiganders until his term expires in January 2023. He also expressed confidence in the Democratic Party’s ability to field a strong candidate to succeed him.

Peters’ decision not to run for re-election is sure to shake up the political landscape in Michigan and could have far-reaching implications for the balance of power in the Senate. As both parties gear up for what promises to be a fiercely contested election cycle, all eyes will be on Michigan as Democrats seek to hold onto their slim majority in the Senate.

  • Virat Kohli hitting triple century against Railways in Ranji Trophy won’t be a big deal but if he fails…

Virat Kohli celebrated his 24th birthday on the final day of his previous Ranji Trophy game, in November 2012, when he was a mere ten Tests young. As he closes in on his first first-class appearance for Delhi in more than a dozen years, Kohli is 36, has 123 Test caps, boasts 30 centuries and an average of 46.85 despite producing just three hundreds in the last five years.

Virat Kohli during a training session ahead of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 cricket match between Delhi and Railways, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium(Hindustan Times)

In normal course, Kohli wouldn’t be playing against Railways in the final round of league games, starting on Thursday. He is coming off a gruelling five-Test tour of Australia (never mind his returns after the Perth century or the 1-3 score line), is recovering from a neck strain and will figure in a three-match One-Day International series against England from February 6, morphing into the Champions Trophy where India begin their campaign against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20. But these aren’t normal times in Indian cricket. Defeats in six of their last eight Tests, allied with collective and repeated top-order meltdowns, have culminated in the Board of Control for Cricket in India insisting on its star players representing their states whenever available.

Laudable as that concept is, a more commonsensical approach would have been prudent. Instead, ahead of a string of white-ball internationals, the likes of Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, his 50-over deputy Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja (who all played in Australia and are in the ODI set-up) were practically compelled to play in the previous set of matches. That responsibility has been thrust on Kohli and KL Rahul in the latest round, in many ways a pyrrhic exercise because even if their respective teams make it to the knockouts, neither of these stalwarts will be available for selection.

Let’s stick with Kohli, him of 25 previous Ranji appearances. He will play under Ayush Badoni, like Pant did last week, against Railways at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the national capital, in a nothing-to-gain situation. Railways, the two-time former champions, are perched ahead of Delhi in the points standings – 17 to 14 after six rounds apiece – but without any disrespect, they don’t possess the most threatening bowling attack. If Kohli makes a hundred, or a double or even a triple, big deal, right? After all, it is against Railways. And if he picks up another low score like he did in the last seven innings in Australia, his growing band of critics will have a field day. ‘Can’t even score against Railways.’

There is no denying the astronomic increase in interest levels and the dramatic uplift of the profile of the Ranji Trophy when the big names turn up for their respective states. The DDCA has been seized of the need to throw open multiple stands in anticipation of a rare occurrence – Kohli playing a domestic game – but token appearances don’t really serve any purpose. India’s next red-ball fixture isn’t until June 20, when they face England in the first of five Tests at Leeds. These Ranji Trophy runs will have little import by then, not with the IPL serving as the final competitive outing before that Test series. But given their losses to New Zealand and Australia, the players are left with no bargaining chips and have little option but to toe the line espoused by head coach Gautam Gambhir and selection panel chairman Ajit Agarkar.

One wonders what’s going through Kohli’s mind. Even during his worst phases – and there have been a few of those, especially in recent times – he has been short on neither intensity nor commitment. Let’s get one thing clear: Virat Kohli doesn’t play a game of cricket for the sake of it, out of a sense of (forced?) duty or responsibility. When he is on the field, he gives it all, like he has done from the time he started playing representatively two decades back. But nothing has energised him more than the scent of serious battle – international games, franchise action. There was a reason why Kohli stayed away from meaningless ‘practice’ games on overseas tours; he found it hard to rouse himself, given the relative lack of stakes. He has now been thrust into a situation where he has to lump it and dig deep to summon the fire whose flames have threatened to lick the sky from time to time, but which is increasingly losing sparkle, if not heat.

Himanshu Sangwan, Kunal Yadav, Purnank Tyagi and Karn Sharma (the leggie who played his only Test under Kohli, in Adelaide in December 2014). Hardly Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon. What does Kohli have in store over the next four days?

Virat Kohli hitting triple century against Railways in Ranji Trophy won’t be a big deal but if he fails…

Virat Kohli, the captain of the Indian cricket team and one of the greatest batsmen of all time, is known for his incredible batting prowess and ability to score big runs in crucial situations. So, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he were to score a triple century against a domestic team like Railways in the Ranji Trophy.

However, what would be truly shocking is if Virat Kohli were to fail to score big runs in such a match. Given his track record and reputation as a run-scoring machine, a failure to perform against a relatively weaker team like Railways would raise eyebrows and lead to questions about his form and mindset.

Fans and critics alike would be left wondering what went wrong and if there were any underlying issues affecting Kohli’s performance. It would certainly be a rare and unexpected turn of events for a player of his caliber.

In conclusion, while a triple century from Virat Kohli may not be a big deal considering his past achievements, a failure to do so would definitely be a major talking point in the world of cricket.
