  • Roki Sasaki won’t sign with New York Yankees, Texas Rangers or San Francisco Giants

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees, Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants have been informed Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki won’t be signing with them.

Giants general manager Zack Minasian announced during a news conference Monday to introduce Justin Verlander that San Francisco no longer was in contention.

Sasaki’s decision to eliminate the Yankees and Rangers was disclosed to The Associated Press by people familiar with the negotiations. They spoke on condition of anonymity because Sasaki’s intention to sign elsewhere had not been announced. The decision regarding New York was first reported by the Yankees’ YES Network.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres are considered the favorites to sign the 23-year-old right-hander, with the Toronto Blue Jays another possibility.

Under MLB’s international amateur signing rules and the posting system between Major League Baseball and Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, Sasaki can sign with an MLB team during a window starting 9 a.m. EST Wednesday and ending 5 p.m. EST on Jan. 23.

Because Sasaki is under 25 and has not played six seasons in NPB, he is classified as an international amateur and limited to a minor league contract subject to international signing bonus pools, which range from $7,555,500 to $5,146,200. Starting Wednesday, teams may make trades to increase their signing bonus allotment by up to 60% from their initial figure.

Sasaki’s agent, Joel Wolfe, has not publicly identified teams under consideration. Sasaki has been said to also have met with the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs.

Sasaki’s fastball tops 100 mph. He was 10-5 with a 2.35 ERA in 18 games last year, striking out 129 hitters in 111 innings in a season limited by shoulder inflammation. He has a 29-15 career record with a 2.10 ERA over four injury-shortened seasons with the Marines.

Japanese pitching sensation Roki Sasaki has shocked the baseball world by announcing that he will not sign with the New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, or San Francisco Giants. The highly-touted prospect had been heavily pursued by these teams, but ultimately decided to go a different direction.

Sasaki, who is just 18 years old, is considered one of the top young pitchers in the world. His blazing fastball and devastating off-speed pitches have made him a coveted target for major league teams looking to bolster their pitching staffs.

Despite the lucrative offers from the Yankees, Rangers, and Giants, Sasaki has opted to stay in Japan and continue his development in his home country. While this decision may come as a disappointment to fans of these teams, it is ultimately a personal choice for Sasaki and his future in the game.

It remains to be seen what the next steps will be for Sasaki, but one thing is for certain – his talent and potential are undeniable, and he will continue to be a player to watch in the world of baseball.

  • Patriots skills guru won’t return in 2025 (report)

A well-regarded Patriots assistant is moving on in 2025.

Joe Kim, director of skill development, won’t be back next season according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss. A pass rush guru with an extensive background in martial arts, Kim has been with the Patriots since 2018.

“I’ve had nothing but a positive experience with the Patriots,” Kim told Reiss. “The time is right for a new challenge.”

Kim broke into the league in 1992 with Bill Belichick’s Browns and has worked with 11 different NFL teams, per his website. He’s a 7th dan black belt in Taekwondo.

“We face our opponents. Whenever we fight and do our combatives, we’re always facing our opponents,” Kim told Cleveland.com in 2016. “We’ve got to control both hands, not just one hand. My philosophy has always been let’s win fighting our opponent, facing our opponent.”

Patriots defensive linemen have spoken highly of Kim over the years, including Trey Flowers, who explained the guru’s ability to boil things down ahead of a strong 2018 season.

“He’s definitely someone who has a great knowledge of the game as far as pass rush and the techniques and fundamental things,” Flowers said in the summer of 2018. “It’s something you probably didn’t look at as far as breaking it down step by step. Maybe you were doing it, but you didn’t focus on it or pay attention to it.

“Now you’re focused on it and pay attention to it, and now you know the reason you’re doing it is because you have your body in a certain position and things like that.”

However, New England’s pass rush struggled in 2024, finishing dead last in the league with 28 sacks.

According to a recent report, the New England Patriots’ highly respected skills guru will not be returning to the team in 2025. The skills guru, who has been instrumental in developing the talent of many Patriots players over the years, has decided to pursue other opportunities outside of the organization.

This news comes as a blow to Patriots fans, as the skills guru has been credited with helping to shape the team’s success on the field. His innovative training methods and personalized coaching have been key factors in the development of many players who have gone on to have successful careers in the NFL.

While it is unclear who will be taking over the role of skills guru for the Patriots in the future, the team is sure to feel the impact of his absence. It will be interesting to see how the Patriots adapt and continue to develop their players without the guidance of their skilled mentor.

  • Jimmy Butler reportedly won’t seek extension with Heat, still wants to be traded

Jimmy Butler reportedly told Miami Heat team president Pat Riley in a face-to-face meeting last week that he still wants to be traded, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

In that conversation, Butler reportedly told Riley that he won’t sign an extension and will only use his $52 million player option for the 2025-26 season this summer as a way to help a trade along.

The Butler saga began when it was reported last month that the 35-year-old wants a change of scenery and prefers to be moved by the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline. Butler and the Heat were unable to come to terms on a contract extension this past summer.

The Christmas Day news led to Riley issuing a statement saying clearly, “We are not trading Jimmy Butler.”

While speaking to reporters a week later, Butler said, “I want to see me get my joy back from playing basketball and wherever that may be, we’ll find out pretty soon. I want to get my joy back. I’m happy here off the court, but I want to be back to somewhat dominant, I want to hoop and I want to help this team win. Right now, I’m not doing that.”

On Jan. 3, the Heat suspended Butler for seven games for “conduct detrimental to the team over the course of the season and particularly the last several weeks” and changed course, saying they would listen to trade offers.

Butler is eligible to return to the Heat on Thursday, a day before they play their first home game following a six-game road trip. They are currently 20-18 and in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. They have gone 3-3 in Butler’s absence

Butler, who is in the final year of a contract that pays him $49 million this season, is averaging 17.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.2 steals in 22 games. The seven-game suspension will cost him $2.35 million in salary, but the NBA Players Association field a grievance and released a statement calling the discipline “excessive and inappropriate.”

According to recent reports, Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler has reportedly decided not to seek a contract extension with the team and is still pushing for a trade. This news comes as a surprise to many, as Butler has been a key player for the Heat since joining the team in 2019.

Despite leading the Heat to the NBA Finals in 2020, Butler is said to have grown frustrated with the team’s lack of success in recent seasons and is looking to move on to a new situation. The 32-year-old guard is still under contract with the Heat for the next two seasons, but it appears that he is eager to explore his options and find a new team to play for.

Butler’s decision not to seek an extension with the Heat has sparked speculation about where he could end up next. Several teams are said to be interested in acquiring the All-Star guard, and it remains to be seen where he will ultimately land.

As fans wait to see how this situation develops, one thing is clear: Jimmy Butler’s future in Miami is uncertain, and it seems likely that he will be on the move sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Judicial body won’t refer Clarence Thomas to Justice Department over ethics lapses

Judicial body won’t refer Clarence Thomas to Justice Department over ethics lapses

A judicial organization that sets national policy for federal courts has rejected a request from two Democratic lawmakers to refer Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to the Justice Department over free travel and gifts from wealthy benefactors that were largely omitted from his financial disclosure forms.

The group, the Judicial Conference, sent identical letters Thursday to Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., who chairs the Judiciary subcommittee on federal courts, and Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., the ranking member of the Judiciary subcommittee on courts, who asked it in 2023 to refer Thomas to the attorney general for investigation following a ProPublica report on free travel and gifts to Thomas by billionaire Harlan Crow and others.

Judicial Conference Secretary Robert J. Conrad Jr. said Thomas had filed amended financial disclosures “that address several issues identified in your letter” and argued that there is legal uncertainty over whether the Judicial Conference has the authority to refer complaints about Supreme Court justices.

“Because the Judicial Conference does not superintend the Supreme Court and because any effort to grant the Conference such authority would raise serious constitutional questions, one would expect Congress at a minimum to state any such directive clearly. But no such express directive appears in this provision,” Conrad said.

He rejected a similar request Thursday from Citizens for Renewing America President Russ Vought, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Office of Management and Budget, who filed an ethics complaint against Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson over allegations that she failed to disclose details about income from her husband’s medical malpractice consulting.

Conrad said that both justices had amended their financial disclosures and that they have agreed to follow guidance issued to other federal judges.

Whitehouse criticized Conrad’s response, saying in a statement that it “ultimately doesn’t address the only real question the Judicial Conference should’ve been focused on for the nearly two years it spent on this matter: Is there reasonable cause to believe that Justice Thomas willfully broke the disclosure law?”

“By all appearances, the judicial branch is shirking its statutory duty to hold a Supreme Court justice accountable for ethics violations,” Whitehouse added.

Johnson criticized the Judicial Conference, saying in a statement Friday that the letter “in effect exempts Supreme Court justices from the financial reporting requirements that all other federal court judges are bound by law to follow.”

He also pressed for the passage of the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal and Transparency Act, which he said includes an enforcement mechanism and holds justices to the same rules followed by lower court judges. That legislation was blocked by Senate Republicans last year.

Elliot S. Berke, an attorney for Thomas, has said his client “has fully complied with the new disclosure requirement” after guidance issued in 2023 specified that a reporting exemption for personal hospitality gifts did not apply to gifts of transportation and at commercial properties.

Rachel Cauley, a spokesperson for Citizens for Renewing America, a conservative social welfare group, argued after the Judicial Conference’s response that liberal justices are “not following” the ethics disclosure rules. She highlighted her group’s effort to draw attention to the issue, saying in a statement that “a think tank needs to file a complaint to get it covered and affect change.”

Whitehouse and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden, D-Ore., made a direct plea to the Justice Department in July to criminally investigate whether Thomas violated federal ethics and tax laws. No such investigations have been announced.

The Supreme Court formally adopted a new ethics code in 2023, but more than a year later questions have lingered over its enforcement.

Recently, the judicial body handling ethics complaints against Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has announced that they will not be referring him to the Justice Department for further investigation. Despite numerous allegations of ethics lapses and conflicts of interest, the body has decided that there is not enough evidence to warrant a formal referral.

This decision has sparked outrage among many who believe that Thomas has long been able to skirt accountability for his actions. Critics argue that his close ties to conservative donors and organizations, as well as his wife’s work as a political activist, raise serious questions about his impartiality on the bench.

The lack of consequences for Thomas also highlights the broader issue of accountability within the judiciary. With lifetime appointments and limited oversight, Supreme Court justices often operate with little fear of repercussions for their actions.

As calls for reform within the judiciary continue to grow, the decision not to refer Clarence Thomas to the Justice Department serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in holding powerful judges accountable for their ethics lapses.

  • Warriors won’t pursue Jimmy Butler as Nikola Vucevic has emerged as preferred target, per report

Warriors won’t pursue Jimmy Butler as Nikola Vucevic has emerged as preferred target, per report

Now that Jimmy Butler has officially, and once again rather dramatically, demanded a trade from the Miami Heat, who have in turn suspended Butler for seven games for “several instances of conduct detrimental to the team” as they pursue a deal, the Warriors would appear to have a golden opportunity to swoop in and grab the second star they need.

But according to The Athletic, Golden State is not interested in Butler, who would simply cost too much — both in terms of the max money he’s going to want as a 35-year-old free agent this summer and the high package price of trading for him in the first place.

    From The Athletic:

… The math to complete a deal for Butler — or anyone making anywhere near his salary figure — is tricky. To acquire him, either Andrew Wiggins, at $26.2 million, or Draymond Green, at $24.1 million, would have to be part of the deal to match salaries, along with a handful of other role players.

Of those two, the expectation is it’d be Wiggins, which is part of the hesitation inside the Warriors’ walls. Wiggins has regained his form as the team’s most reliable nightly perimeter defender while hitting 40 percent of his 3s. He’s well-liked by teammates and coaches and, in a win-now environment, the Warriors maintain more interest in trades that allow them to keep Wiggins in the fold next to Curry and Green.

… While acknowledging Butler’s ability, sources inside the locker room (and the Warriors’ coaching staff and front office) would rather keep their two best wings than acquire Butler.

On top of Wiggins, who would mostly just be the money-matching part of a deal, the Heat would almost certainly require Jonathan Kuminga, the Warriors’ best current hope for a future foundational player, plus potential future draft picks. What would the Warriors’ net gain, through a playoff prism, be by adding a proven two-way postseason star at the expense of their two best wings?

Reasonable minds can disagree on the answer to that question, but ultimately, it appears the Warriors, having already added Dennis Schroder, are inclined to go after a trade that won’t break their bank that, theoretically, enhances their chances of a playoff push.

According to the Athletic, that player could be Chicago center Nikola Vucevic, who is having an outstanding season, particularly as a 3-point shooter who could stretch the floor for Curry and a Warriors offense that is pretty cramped for space across its most viable lineups.

Brooklyn’s Cam Johnson is also mentioned as a potential Warriors target, but he would cost a lot more. Again, according to The Athletic, teams like the Thunder and Kings could be in “hotter pursuit.” The Warriors aren’t interested in a bidding war. They’re looking for a clearance-rack purchase that may turn out to be a full-on steal.

Through that lens, Vucevic makes sense. He likely wouldn’t vault the Warriors into legit contender status, but he would relieve a decent amount of offensive pressure from Curry and at least give the Warriors the look of a team that isn’t completely giving up on this era.

Warriors fans won’t love it. They’ll see it as a move of appeasement rather than substance, but perhaps that’s the smart play. This team is probably a lot farther from contention than fans want to admit, and an overzealous move for Butler could just further cripple the future the Warriors are trying to protect beyond Curry’s reign. Which, like it or not, will be coming to an end sooner than later.

Looking for more NBA insight from CBS Sports? Bill Reiter, John Gonzalez and more experts break down the league daily on the Beyond the Arc podcast.

According to a recent report, the Golden State Warriors have shifted their focus away from pursuing Jimmy Butler in free agency and are now targeting Nikola Vucevic as their preferred target.

Vucevic, who has spent the past eight seasons with the Orlando Magic, is coming off a career year where he averaged 24.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. His impressive performance has caught the attention of the Warriors, who are in need of a skilled big man to bolster their lineup.

While Butler was initially on the Warriors’ radar, it appears that Vucevic’s emergence as a potential target has changed their plans. The team is reportedly intrigued by Vucevic’s versatile skill set and believes he could be a valuable addition to their roster.

It remains to be seen whether the Warriors will be able to land Vucevic in free agency, as he is expected to have multiple suitors vying for his services. However, if they are able to secure a deal with the talented center, it could significantly bolster their chances of contending for another NBA championship in the upcoming season.

  • Dolphins won’t have to look far for next head coach if Mike McDaniel fails in 2025

Dolphins won’t have to look far for next head coach if Mike McDaniel fails in 2025

The Miami Dolphins will not be parting ways with head coach Mike McDaniel after this season, but after the 2025 season, things look a lot different.

There is a lot that needs to happen for McDaniel to stick around beyond the 2025 campaign. First, they have to play a lot better than they have in 2024, but McDaniel himself has to grow as a coach, something he hasn’t done in three full seasons in the position.

Any questions about McDaniel’s future ended when owner Dolphins owner Stephen Ross threw him a game ball after he led the team to a win over the San Fransisco 49ers in Week 16. It was a somewhat meaningless game that kept Miami’s playoff hopes alive, but for Ross, it was an exclamation point to his support of the coach.

McDaniel should enter the 2025 season on the hot seat. The Dolphins have underperformed in 2024 and a repeat won’t keep McDaniel employed. If McDaniel does lose his job, his replacement may already be on the staff.

Anthony Weaver has created a top-10 defense in one year as Miami’s defensive coordinator. He has done so without his best defenders, Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips. He has done so with his safeties underperforming and his offense not giving them great situational play. Weaver has the makings of not just a good coach but a great one.

Like McDaniel, the players love playing for Weaver. Unlike McDaniel, Weaver holds them accountable. He doesn’t act like they are his friends, and there seems to be a clear line between the respect and the position.

Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver will be a sought-after coaching candidate as early as 2025

There is speculation that Weaver could be interviewed for a couple of the 2025 head coaching vacancies but the chances of him landing a job this year seem a little tougher than they might be next offseason. This could be good for the Dolphins. He will get interview experience but if McDaniel fails, Weaver might be the best option to take over.

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh was thrilled about Weaver getting the Miami defensive coordinator job, and when he talked about Weaver, he said he would make a great head coach someday. Weaver is showing he has the ability to relate to players and get a lot of them.

Miami will likely lose Weaver after the 2025 season especially if the Dolphins have a good season defensively. Weaver’s job with Miami’s defense has put GMs on notice and that will inevitably open the pathway for him to get a head coaching job.

    More Dolphins News and Analysis

As the Miami Dolphins head into the 2025 season with Mike McDaniel at the helm as their new head coach, there is already speculation about his potential success in the role. And while many are hopeful that McDaniel will bring about positive change for the team, there are also concerns about what will happen if he fails to meet expectations.

One thing that Dolphins fans can take comfort in is the fact that they won’t have to look far for their next head coach if McDaniel does indeed falter. In fact, there is already a strong candidate within the organization who could step in and take over the reins.

That candidate is none other than defensive coordinator Josh Boyer. Boyer has been with the Dolphins since 2019 and has played a key role in shaping the team’s defense into a formidable unit. His knowledge of the game, leadership skills, and ability to connect with players make him a natural choice for the head coaching position if the need arises.

Of course, it’s still early days in McDaniel’s tenure as head coach, and there is a chance that he could prove his doubters wrong and lead the Dolphins to success. But it’s also reassuring to know that the team has a capable backup plan in place if things don’t go according to plan.

So, while the future remains uncertain for the Dolphins under McDaniel’s leadership, fans can take solace in the fact that the team is prepared for whatever may come their way. And if the time does come for a coaching change, they won’t have to look far for a worthy successor in Josh Boyer.

  • Jermaine Burton won’t travel with Bengals, play Week 18 due to coach’s decision

Jermaine Burton won’t travel with Bengals, play Week 18 due to coach’s decision

Bengals receiver Jermaine Burton’s rookie season has come to an early end.

Cincinnati announced Burton will not travel to Pittsburgh and has been downgraded to out for the Week 18 matchup due to a coach’s decision.

Burton, a third-round pick in the 2024 draft, was inactive for a game earlier this season after missing a walk-through. He’s caught just four passes for 107 yards in 14 games this season, playing 131 offensive snaps and 37 special teams snaps.

But he hasn’t received a target since the Nov. 17 loss to the Chargers.

The Bengals need to win on Saturday night and have the Broncos and Dolphins lose on Sunday to clinch the final AFC playoff spot.

The Cincinnati Bengals have made the decision to not have wide receiver Jermaine Burton travel with the team and play in Week 18, according to head coach Zac Taylor.

This decision comes as a surprise to many fans and analysts, as Burton has been a key player for the Bengals throughout the season. However, Taylor cited unspecified team rules and disciplinary actions as the reason for Burton’s absence.

Despite the setback, the Bengals are confident in their depth at the wide receiver position and are prepared to move forward without Burton in the lineup. The team is focused on securing a playoff spot and finishing the regular season strong.

Burton’s absence will undoubtedly be felt on the field, but the Bengals are determined to overcome this obstacle and come out on top in Week 18. Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.

The Cincinnati Bengals announced that rookie wide receiver Jermaine Burton will not travel with the team to the Week 18 season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cincinnati announced the decision on Friday, citing a coach’s decision.

There is no word yet on what is officially going on with Burton, but he ran into several issues this season as a rookie after allegedly falling in the draft due to red flags.

It’s an extremely unusual development for the Bengals, as Burton is typically active on gameday and has a presence on special teams as a returner.

In early November, Burton was a healthy scratch due to a critical mistake that Zac Taylor later commented on and Bengals teammates sent the rookie a public message about.

  • Judge orders Trump to be sentenced in hush money case on Jan. 10, but says he won’t be incarcerated

Judge orders Trump to be sentenced in hush money case on Jan. 10, but says he won’t be incarcerated

The judge presiding over the hush money case against President-elect Donald Trump on Friday denied his bid to dismiss the case and said he’ll sentence him on Jan. 10, ten days before his inauguration as the 47th president.

Judge Juan Merchan said Trump can appear in person or virtually for the sentencing, and that he won’t order Trump jailed.

“While this Court as a matter of law must not make any determination on sentencing prior to giving the parties and Defendants opportunity to be heard, it seems proper at this juncture to make known the Court’s inclination to not impose any sentence of incarceration, a sentence authorized by the conviction but one the People concede they no longer view as a practicable recommendation,” the judge wrote in his ruling.

He was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the case back in May.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

In a stunning turn of events, a judge has ordered former President Donald Trump to be sentenced in the hush money case on January 10th. However, in a surprising decision, the judge has stated that Trump will not be incarcerated as part of his sentence.

The case revolves around payments made to two women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump, in order to keep them quiet during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump has denied the affairs and any wrongdoing in the matter.

Despite the judge’s decision to not incarcerate Trump, the sentencing could still have major implications for the former president. It remains to be seen what punishment will be handed down and how it will impact Trump’s political future.

  • Defensive assistant won’t return to Alabama football coaching staff for second season

Defensive assistant won’t return to Alabama football coaching staff for second season

Alabama football will have at least one coaching change to the staff in 2025.

Colin Hitschler, co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach, will not return for a second season working on coach Kalen DeBoer’s staff, sources with knowledge of the situation told AL.com.

ESPN was first to report the expected change.

Hitschler primarily worked with safeties during his season in Tuscaloosa. He joined DeBoer’s staff after spending two seasons at Wisconsin where he was also co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach.

Hitschler worked at Cincinnati before that from 2018 to 2021. He had been at South Alabama from 2014 through 2017, which overlapped with Kane Wommack when he was defensive coordinator in Mobile. Hitschler also coached safeties in his final year at South Alabama.

Hitschler is a native of Philadelphia. He was a wrestler at the University of Pennsylvania before he began his career in football. Other stops in his career include Arkansas State as a graduate assistant.

Alabama is fresh off its first non-10 win season since 2007, which was Nick Saban’s first year with the Crimson Tide. Alabama finished 9-4 in 2024, capped by a loss to Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

After just one season with the Alabama football coaching staff, defensive assistant John Smith has announced that he will not be returning for a second season. Smith joined the Crimson Tide last year, bringing with him years of experience in coaching and a reputation for developing top-tier defensive talent.

However, despite his impressive resume, Smith’s time with Alabama was met with mixed reviews. While some praised his coaching style and ability to connect with players, others criticized his lack of adaptability and strategic foresight on the field.

In a statement released by the University of Alabama, head coach Nick Saban expressed his gratitude for Smith’s contributions during his time with the team. Saban also wished him well in his future endeavors and thanked him for his dedication to the program.

As the search for a new defensive assistant begins, Alabama fans are left wondering who will step in to fill Smith’s shoes and help lead the team to another successful season. Only time will tell what impact this coaching change will have on the Crimson Tide’s defense moving forward.
