  • Twins Notes: Varland, Woods Richardson, Castro

The Twins entered the 2024 season with high hopes that prospect and Twin Cities native Louie Varland would step up and seize a spot in the rotation. The former 15th-round pick had the look of a late-round steal, having climbed to the No. 88 prospect in the game on FanGraphs’ top-100 rankings after pitching to a 3.06 ERA, 27.3% strikeout rate and 7.9% walk rate in 126 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A in 2022 and notching a 3.81 ERA through 26 frames in his MLB debut late that season. Varland posted a 3.97 ERA with similar strikeout and walk rates in 81 2/3 Triple-A frames in 2023 and then held his own with a 4.63 ERA and continued K-BB rates in his 2023 range.

The 2024 season, however, could scarcely have gone worse for Varland. He lasted four starts in the rotation before being optioned to Triple-A with a 9.18 ERA (17 runs in 16 2/3 innings). Varland had a rollercoaster season in Triple-A, resulting in a 4.75 ERA through 16 starts, though a disproportionate amount of damage came in one start that saw him tagged for a staggering 11 earned runs. (He had a combined 3.67 ERA in his other appearances.) A late look in the majors yielded poor overall results, though Varland did finish with a nice stretch of 7 2/3 innings, wherein he allowed two runs with an 11-to-2 K/BB ratio.

Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports that as the Twins gear up for 2025, it appears increasingly likely that Varland will be ticketed for a relief role. The St. Paul native averaged better than 95 mph on his heater last season even when working as a starter; it’s reasonable to expect that velocity to play up in a transition to a shorter role. Varland has posted at least average swinging-strike rates in the upper minors and big leagues as well, so it stands to reason that he could see an uptick in whiffs with a more powerful repertoire.

One reason it’s become easier to move a former rotation hopeful like Varland to the ’pen has been the reemergence of Simeon Woods Richardson. The former top prospect had tumbled down Minnesota’s starting pitching depth chart heading into ’24 after a dismal 2023 showing in Triple-A. But, as Woods Richardson explained in a sitdown with The Athletic’s Aaron Gleeman, an offseason and spring training of work with the Twins’ data team and coaching staff brought about a new arm slot that produced more velocity and a new-look slider that broke out as his most effective secondary pitch.

Woods Richardson wore down a bit late in the 2024 season as he pushed to a new career-high level in terms of workload (31 starts, 147 innings), but he finished the season with a 4.17 ERA, 20.6% strikeout rate and 8.4% walk rate. His four-seamer, which averaged just 90.7 mph in his brief MLB looks in 2022-23, sat at 93.1 mph on the season despite fading over his final six starts (92.1 mph average four-seamer, 6.75 ERA). Woods Richardson, acquired alongside Austin Martin in the trade that sent the final year-plus of control over Jose Berrios to Toronto, now looks like he’ll open the 2025 season locked into the No. 4 spot in Minnesota’s rotation behind Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan and Bailey Ober.

Development from in-house arms of this nature will be key for the Twins in 2025, as ownership has handcuffed the baseball operations staff all offseason in terms of roster additions, as the Pohlad family explores a sale of the club. The Twins have been active in trade talks but have not yet pieced together a deal of much note. They’ve added some catching depth in small swaps for former top prospect Diego Cartaya and utilityman Mickey Gasper, but top trade candidates like Christian Vazquez and Chris Paddack remain with the club. The Twins still would like to add at first base and pick up a right-handed hitting outfielder, but there’s been no trade of note and not one major league free agent signing thus far, given payroll constraints from ownership. The Twins may not need to cut payroll from its current level, but they also don’t have much (or any) room to raise it without a trade that trims some salary from the books.

With those financial limitations in mind, the front office is considering some time at first base for utilityman Willi Castro, per Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Twenty-six-year-old Jose Miranda, who bounced back from a 2023 season ruined by shoulder surgery to bat .284/.322/.441 last year (115 wRC+) is the top in-house option at the moment. He’s played 698 big league innings there and graded poorly from a defensive standpoint, although the former second baseman/third baseman was largely learning the position on the fly in 2022 when he tallied 595 of those innings; he’d entered that season with all of 225 career minor league innings at the position.

It seems unlikely that Castro would be a regular option at first, given the value of his versatility. He’s a viable backup at shortstop, second base, third base and anywhere in the outfield. Adding first base to that repertoire only further broadens his importance to the club. There’s been some thought that Castro and his own $6.4MM salary could be a candidate to change hands, though doing so would thin out the Twins’ depth at all those positions and remove one of the team’s best baserunners. With Minnesota at least ostensibly not required to slash payroll any further, trading Castro seems like a scenario to which the front office would be heavily opposed.

  • Danity Kane’s D. Woods breaks silence on Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs

Danity Kane alum D. Woods claimed the girl group’s founder, Sean “Diddy” Combs, was predatory and created a verbally abusive work environment.

The singer, born Wanita Denise Woodgett, broke her silence on her traumatic experience working with the embattled rapper during a “Good Morning America” interview Monday.

“I would say that this moment now is a time where I feel like my experience, my truth will really be heard and actually considered and believed,” she said, referring to Combs’ upcoming sex trafficking trial and the sexual assault and rape allegations stacking up against the hip-hop mogul.

A clip from the new Investigation Discovery documentary “The Fall of Diddy,” in which Woods shares her story, even shows Combs body-shaming her.

“He did it in different ways with all of us. You know, picking and prying and just a way to chip and knock away, but then praise you,” she claimed to ABC News’ Eva Pilgrim of their “troubling interactions.”

In the doc, Woods describes her time with Combs, saying she saw herself standing in “dark, scary, predatory spaces.” She also remembers him saying “some of the most degrading things.”

When asked on “GMA” how working with Combs, 55, was “predatory,” Woods claimed he was “constantly treating you like a piece of meat.”

“Only valuing you for your sex appeal. And some of the environments, you know, it was even scary to be by yourself,” she said.

Woods and her former bandmates — Aundrea Fimbres, Shannon Bex, Dawn Richard and Aubrey O’Day — skyrocketed to success in the mid-2000s with hits like “Show Stopper” and “Damaged” after signing to Combs’ label, Bad Boy Records, on “Making the Band 3.”

But things crumbled when Combs fired Woods and O’Day, now 40, from Danity Kane after tensions began to unfold.

An old clip from the MTV reality show captured Woods telling Combs she did not think anyone in the group had been “happy for a long time” before he dismissed her.

Woods claims in “The Fall of Diddy” that she witnessed “inappropriate communications” between Combs and O’Day prior to their firings.

While Combs’ behavior was troubling, Woods said she and her bandmates had no one to turn to for help.

Woods admitted she is hesitant to speak out because she fears retribution from Combs. D Woods/Instagram

“It’s like, ‘So how do we survive this?’” she asked.

Combs has denied all accusations made in the documentary, with his attorneys saying in a statement to ABC News, “The producers failed to provide sufficient time or details for his representatives to address unsubstantiated claims.”

The legal team added, “He has full confidence in the facts and judicial process, where the truth will prevail: The accusations against him are pure fiction.”

Woods admitted during Monday’s sit-down that she was afraid of “retribution” if Combs gets off scot-free.

“Even this,” she said of her “GMA” appearance. “It’s like, maybe I shouldn’t say [that], maybe I should stop talking, shut up.

“But it’s like, you know, well, not talking hasn’t changed anything either,” she continued.

“The Fall of Diddy” premieres Monday at 9 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery and Max.

Danity Kane’s D. Woods has finally broken her silence on her former mentor and music mogul, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. In a recent interview, D. Woods opened up about her time with Diddy and the impact he had on her career.

    D. Woods revealed that while she is grateful for the opportunities Diddy provided for her as a member of Danity Kane, she also felt stifled and restricted within the group. She explained that Diddy’s controlling nature made it difficult for her to express herself creatively and fully showcase her talents.

Despite the challenges she faced, D. Woods emphasized that she has no ill will towards Diddy and is thankful for the experience she gained while working with him. She expressed her desire to continue pursuing her music career on her own terms and create music that truly reflects her artistry.

Fans of Danity Kane and D. Woods have been eagerly waiting to hear her thoughts on Diddy, and her candid interview has shed light on her perspective on their past working relationship. As she moves forward with her solo career, it will be interesting to see how D. Woods continues to evolve and make her mark in the music industry.

  • Danity Kane Star D. Woods Alleges Diddy Treated Her Like ‘A Piece of Meat’

Former Danity Kane member D. Woods is reflecting on what she claims were “troubling interactions” she allegedly had with Sean “Diddy” Combs during her time in the girl group.

Among other claims, Woods, 41, alleged that Combs, 55, fostered a verbally abusive work environment.

“He did it in different ways with all of us, you know, picking and prodding and just a way to chip and knock away, but then praise you,” she said during an interview with Good Morning America on Monday, January 27. “Somebody constantly treating you like a piece of meat.”

Woods went on to recall feeling as though Diddy only valued her for her “sex appeal.”

“In some of the environments, it was even scary to be by yourself,” she added.

Diddy Documentary Producer Hopes Making the Band’s Sara Rivers Felt Coming Forward Was ‘Cathartic’

Danity Kane was formed in 2005, during MTV’s Making the Band 3. Woods — one of the group’s original members — performed alongside Aundrea Fimbres, Shannon Bex, Dawn Richard and Aubrey O’Day. (Diddy fired Woods and O’Day from the group during a 2008 episode of Making the Band 4. O’Day eventually returned to the group, but Woods did not.)

Making the Band was a reality show, and like many others, certain aspects were dramatized for entertainment purposes,” a source told Us Weekly on Monday. “Decisions about the group were always made with a focus on maintaining professionalism, fostering growth, and ensuring the group’s success. Viewers of the show were not shocked or surprised by the events that unfolded onscreen because they were presented transparently.”

Woods explained during her GMA interview on Monday why she’s since decided to speak out about her alleged past experiences.

“I would say that this moment now is a time where I feel like my experience, my truth will really be heard and actually considered and believed,” she shared. “Not talking hasn’t changed anything either.”

Diddy is currently being held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn as he awaits trial, which is set to start in May. The music mogul was arrested in September 2024 on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has denied all allegations and pleaded not guilty to all charges.

“You know, he is looked at as a hero of our community, and myself included, I looked up to him too,” Woods said during the GMA interview. “So, a lot of people don’t want to believe that their hero can be this other person.”

Danity Kane’s Dawn Richard Sues Diddy, Accuses Him of Brutality, Sexual Abuse and Manipulation

Woods further details her allegations against Diddy in the Investigation Discovery docuseries The Fall of Diddy, which premieres tonight. Diddy’s team has spoken out ahead of the premiere, claiming that the show is “a one-sided and prejudicial narrative” of the musician.

“These documentaries are rushing to cash in on the media circus surrounding Mr. Combs,” a statement shared with Us Weekly read. “The producers failed to provide sufficient time or details for his representatives to address unsubstantiated claims, many from unidentified participants whose allegations lack context. By withholding this information, they made it impossible for Mr. Combs to present facts to counter these fabricated accusations.”

The statement continued, “As we’ve said before, Mr. Combs cannot respond to every publicity stunt or facially ridiculous claim. He has full confidence in the facts and the judicial process, where the truth will prevail: the accusations against him are pure fiction.”

Danity Kane Star D. Woods Alleges Diddy Treated Her Like ‘A Piece of Meat’

Former Danity Kane member D. Woods has spoken out about her experience working with music mogul Diddy, alleging that he treated her like “a piece of meat.”

In a recent interview, D. Woods revealed that while she was a member of the popular girl group, she often felt objectified and disrespected by Diddy. She claimed that he would make inappropriate comments about her appearance and body, and would often prioritize the other members of the group over her.

    D. Woods also alleged that Diddy would pressure her to dress in revealing outfits and participate in photoshoots that made her uncomfortable. She stated that she felt as though she was being used for her looks rather than her talent.

The singer went on to say that she ultimately decided to leave Danity Kane and pursue a solo career because of the toxic environment created by Diddy. She expressed her disappointment in how she was treated and urged others in the industry to stand up against mistreatment and objectification.

Diddy has yet to respond to D. Woods’ allegations, but the singer’s brave decision to speak out has sparked a conversation about the treatment of women in the music industry. It is important for artists to feel respected and valued for their talent, rather than being reduced to mere objects for someone else’s profit.

  • ‘Sub in Charlie Woods’: Calls Mount for Kevin Kisner to Be Fired Amid Yet Another Disastrous TGL Outing

Kevin Kisner out. Charlie Woods in. That’s the prevalent sentiment midway through the second match of Jupiter Links. Kisner struggled in the first match itself, hitting into the water, and then pulling off a shank no one ever thought was possible with a wedge. The Kiz Show is still going on in the second match of the Jupiter Links GC. The veteran golfer has the chops for self-deprecation but that’s not the only skill fans expect to see from him.

In the second match in TGL, this time against, Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, and Adam Scott’s Boston Common Golf, Kisner was once again struggling. Jupiter Links threw the hammer on the second hole, confident enough to win and rake in two points.

But Kisner missed the putt forcing Tom Kim to come to rescue. They eventually lost the hammer as Boston tied the hole. In the last match, other than a few haywire approach shots and drives, Kisner’s highlight was the bizarre shank. The veteran pro, who moonlights as an analyst for Golf Channel as well, fired his wedge straight at the flagstick. The ball hit the flagstick and jetted off to the sides

It left everyone in splits. “We honestly didn’t think that anyone could possibly get hit in here. But that was one of the funniest moments I’ve ever seen, Kis hitting that shot like that. We were just dying,” said the Tiger Woods at that time. He still included Kisner in the team in place of Max Homa. Nevertheless, as the four-time PGA Tour winner continued to put the team in a difficult position, some fans actually wanted him replaced and subbed out from the team.

Fans want to see Charlie Woods and it’s not a bad idea

Ironically, Kevin Kisner asked Charlie to come down in the previous match. ““You wanna come and play? Come sub in, man! Bring in the righty.” Some fans would actually want that to happen. “Charlie Woods would probably be a significant improvement over Kevin Kisner who should be permanently benched,” noted one frustrated fan.”Can @JupiterLinksGC sub in Charlie for Kisner?!” wrote one user.  Of course, that is not happening. Not at least in this season. Notably, TGL doesn’t allow substitution within a match as well.

It’s not a bad idea though. Firstly, the veteran golfer indeed looks out of place in front of a simulator. Secondly, Woods Jr., being a teenager with a quite impressive game, would benefit the team more. Plus, of course, you can’t rule out the charm of watching the father-son duo teeing off together week in and week out. Then the teenager is an elite trash talker, who, if mic’d up wouldn’t refrain from throwing darts at his dad’s colleagues. He is actually in the arena and offering tips to his father.

Referring to his shank from the last time, Kyle Porter, former CBS writer and current betting analyst at TGL, tweeted, “I am convinced that Jupiter declined the hammer not because they weren’t going to win the hole but to keep the fans safe from another Kevin Kisner bunker shot.” Alex Myers, Senior Writer at Golf Digest, actually joked that Woods is facing a more difficult task than the 2008 US Open, where he played with a broken leg and still won his 14th major title in a Monday playoff.Tiger Woods winning a TGL match with Kevin Kisner as a teammate would be more impressive than him winning a U.S. Open on a broken leg.

While, Frankie Borrelli of Barstool Sports wrote, “Kevin Kisner walks into the TGL arena and every ounce of skill in his body stays in the parking lot.” The 40-year-old somewhat redeemed himself with a clutch 10-footer putt on the 8th hole. A few minutes before that Kisner actually hit probably his best shot in TGL, a spectacular approach on the 7th. But he still has a long way to go before he has the fans convinced of his worth. Till then fans will keep calling for Charlie Woods.

It seems like the pressure is mounting for Kevin Kisner as fans and critics alike are calling for him to be benched in favor of the young prodigy, Charlie Woods. Kisner’s recent performance in The Golf League (TGL) has been nothing short of disastrous, with missed putts, errant drives, and lackluster play all around.

Many are pointing to Woods as the solution to TGL’s woes, noting his impressive skills and potential to turn things around for the struggling team. With Kisner’s lack of results and ongoing struggles, the calls for his firing are only getting louder.

Will TGL make the bold move to sub in Charlie Woods and give him a chance to shine? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the pressure is on for Kisner to step up his game or risk losing his spot on the team. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Welcome to the Monday Leaderboard, where we run down the weekend’s top stories in the wonderful world of golf. Grab an Arnold Palmer, pull up a chair and get ready for a battle of titans …

Think what you will about TGL, the new indoor golf league — fun addition to the golf universe or strange made-for-TV aberration — but it’s undeniable that we’ve arrived at the league’s big moment. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, giants of two generations and the founders behind TGL, will meet for the first time Monday night. You probably don’t much care about whether Tiger’s Jupiter Links Golf Club can bounce back from its initial humiliation, or whether Rory’s Boston Common Golf Club will shine in its debut. But if you’re a golf fan, you do care about seeing these two legends going head-to-head. It’s not Sunday at Augusta, true, but it’s still going to be fun, one way or another.

The AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach tees off this week with a bit of extra juice. It’s the second “signature” event of the year, but the first to feature Scottie Scheffler, returning to the links for the first time since injuring his hand on Christmas. He’ll be joined by McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth and a whole bunch of other notable names, making this a true must-watch event. Scheffler had to have bits of glass surgically removed from his hand after breaking a glass, which means he’ll probably only win by seven or eight.

    (Bruno Rouby / Yahoo Sports)

All due respect to the players who competed in this past weekend’s Farmers Insurance Open, and the windy conditions at Torrey Pines, but this was a case study in why the game needs a shot clock, or slow-play penalties, or anything to keep the game moving. After the final threesome played the front nine holes in three hours, CBS analyst Dottie Pepper seethed. “I think we’re starting to need a new word to talk about this pace-of-play issue, and it’s respect,” she said. “For your fellow competitors, for the fans, for broadcasts, for all of it. It’s just gotta get better.” TGL’s shot clock has brought a renewed focus to the speed of play, and CBS’ broadcasts are continuing the conversation … but not in a way that the PGA Tour would like.

It’s a generally accepted truism that a golf-ball rollback would improve the current pro game by bringing strategy back into course management, preventing players from bombing drives and wedging their way onto the green. Rollback’s usage for casual players, however, is much less beneficial … and since several entities in the game are against “bifurcation,” or using different rules for pros and amateurs, there’s now some new pushback to planned rollback rules.

New PGA of America commissioner Derek Sprague voiced his concerns just days after taking over the job. “I don’t know one recreational golfer that wants to hit it shorter,” Sprague told Golf Digest. “I don’t think we want 30 or 40 million golfers to go out and have to not only buy new golf balls, but now buy new equipment to match the new golf ball. So it really puts a burden on the recreational player.” It’s all a matter of whom the rules are meant to serve, and whom they unfairly penalize. And the matter clearly isn’t anywhere close to solved, no matter when the rules are enforced.

Harris English entered Saturday’s final round at the Farmers Insurance Open with a one-shot lead, then promptly gave it away with two early bogeys. But he rallied to win by one shot over Sam Stevens. It’s English’s fifth PGA Tour victory, and one achieved in the toughest conditions so far this year on Tour.

Nice little trophy this time around for the Tour stop, a replica of Torrey’s famous windswept pines. Would’ve been better if they were actual size, but we go with what we can get. (Does he get to keep the surfboard?)

Nice job of dodging disaster here from Max Homa. The rest of us would’ve ended up in the drink, guaranteed.

That’ll do it for this week, friends. Hit ’em straight and roll ’em true, and we’ll see you back here next Monday.

It’s Monday, and that means it’s time for another exciting round of Monday Leaderboard! This week, all eyes are on Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as they face off at last in The Golf League (TGL).

Woods, a seasoned veteran with multiple major championships under his belt, is looking to prove he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level. On the other hand, McIlroy, a young and talented golfer with a strong record of success, is eager to show that he can take on the best of the best.

The stage is set for an epic showdown between two of golf’s biggest stars, and fans are buzzing with excitement. Will Woods’ experience and skill prevail, or will McIlroy’s youthful energy and talent win the day?

THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THEY’RE GREEN AND THE SOFI CENTER HAS ALMOST 4000FT OF SPACE AND PISTONS UNDERNEATH THAT WILL GO UP AND DOWN TO MIMIC THE VIRTUAL WORLD. WELL, HOPEFULLY, YOU KNOW, MUCH LIKE OUR FANS, YOU KNOW, CAN CREATE AN EMOTIONAL BOND WITH THE JAYSON TATUM’S OF THE WORLD OR THE RAFAEL DEVERS OF THE WORLD. HOPEFULLY THEY CAN DO THE SAME WITH WITH ADAM. HIDEKI, RORY AND AND REALLY KEEGAN TOO. I THINK THE THE CASUAL BOSTON GOLFER IS GOING TO BE PRETTY INVESTED. ANYTHING THAT MAKES GOLF LOOK MORE FUN, I THINK IT CAN SOMETIMES BE A VERY INTIMIDATING SPORT. I THINK IF YOU CAN CREATE LIKE A LITTLE BIT MORE OF A COMFORT LEVEL FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE, YOU’RE GOING TO GET MORE PEOPLE TO GET INVOLVED AND HOPEFULLY THAT’S GOING TO HELP GROW THE GAME. SO A TON OF TECH BEING USED TO GROW THE GAME OF GOLF TO A NEW AUDIENCE. BUT THAT’S THE QUESTION WILL THIS VERSION OF GOLF BE DIGESTIBLE FOR THE CASUAL SPORTS FAN? AND WILL BOSTON SPORTS FANS ATTACHED TO THEIR NEW TEAM? WELL, THE FIRST STEP IS TONIGHT. BOSTON COMMON GOLF TAKES ON TIGER WOODS AND JUPITER LINKS GOLF. THAT’S AT 63

TGL TV ratings take significant hit. Here’s what it means

While BCG are making their TGL debut Monday night, JLGC played their first match two weeks ago. Unfortunately for Tiger and his team, they got throttled 12-1 by a Los Angeles Golf Club led by Collin Morikawa. But the match did draw the biggest TV ratings yet for a TGL match.

The format for the fourth match will see the teams compete on a nine-hole simulator course in triples, and then alternate appearing in one-hole singles matches. While the simulator will be used for most shots, short game shots and putting will happen live around the stadium’s high-tech putting green.

ESPN will offer exclusive TV coverage of the fourth TGL match beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET on Monday night, while ESPN+ will provide exclusive streaming coverage online.
