Kevin Young keeps his word, continues to ‘carry the torch’ – Deseret News

When BYU basketball coach Kevin Young said he wanted to “carry the torch” from football’s impressive season and “keep momentum going” he wasn’t kidding, and on Saturday he was true to his word.

Young’s Cougars blasted Arizona State 76-56 in the Big 12 opener at the Marriott Center. Beating the Sun Devils like he did was a way for Young to tip his cap to Kalani Sitake and the football team, while providing a little payback for what happened on Nov. 23.

A spirited Arizona State squad jumped out to a 21-0 lead on that sunny day in Tempe and held on to upset the No. 14 Cougars 28-23, knocking them off the road to Arlington and the Big 12 championship game.

Special Collector’s Issue: “1984: The Year BYU was Second to None”

Get an inclusive look inside BYU Football’s 1984 National Championship season.

Young flipped the script when the 9-2 Sun Devils came to town on Tuesday. Not only was the home crowd on his side, but the Cougars charged out of the gate to take an 18-4 lead when Richie Saunders buried a 3-point shot.

In the second half, BYU kept the pressure on and when Saunders hit another 3 for a career-high 30 points, it was as if the Cougars were spiking the ball in the end zone. Mission accomplished. Redemption delivered.

Football and basketball are never far apart and when both are flying high, life on campus is pretty good. Young’s Cougars go to No. 14 Houston (9-3, 1-0) Saturday (noon, ESPN+) with a 10-2 record. Sitake’s Cougars beat Houston last month to finish the regular season 10-2.

BYU’s Alamo Bowl performance capped a magical run in just their second year in the Big 12. To win an 11th game against a top-25 team in front of a bowl-record 8 million television viewers is an impressive way to pass the torch to basketball.

Beating Arizona State in his Big 12 debut makes for a Happy New Year for Young, whose toughest challenges lie ahead, especially on Saturday where Houston’s 22-game home win streak is the longest in Division I basketball.

No doubt, Young’s guys will be the underdog, just as Sitake’s Cougars were last Saturday in San Antonio. Is Texas ready for a second BYU stunner in seven days? One thing we know right now is Young has a firm grip on “the torch” and the momentum to extend football’s glee into 2025.

Kevin Young, a promising young athlete, has been making waves in the sports world with his exceptional talent and determination. Recently, he made a promise to his fans and supporters that he would continue to push himself to new heights and “carry the torch” for his team.

True to his word, Kevin Young has been putting in the work both on and off the field, constantly striving to improve and excel in his sport. His dedication and hard work are evident in his performance, as he continues to impress fans and critics alike with his skill and athleticism.

Young’s commitment to his team and his sport is truly inspiring, and his determination to succeed is a shining example to all aspiring athletes. With each game, he proves that he is a force to be reckoned with, and his passion for the game is infectious.

As Kevin Young continues to “carry the torch,” he is not only making a name for himself in the sports world but also setting an example for future generations of athletes. His dedication and drive serve as a reminder that hard work and perseverance can lead to great success, and his journey is one that will undoubtedly continue to inspire others for years to come.

“Word” – Parker McCollum Responds To Fan Yelling “F*** Oliver Anthony” During Show

Parker McCollum supports the Oliver Anthony takedown. Over the weekend, Parker McCollum took the stage in Little Rock, Arkansas, laying down one of his last shows of 2024. The Texas native was taking a quick pause in the set when a fan yelled out from the crowd: “F**k Oliver Anthony.” While this story has a lengthier backstory than a fan just yelling it for fun, it shows one thing: Parker McCollum fans are pissed at Oliver Anthony for insinuating he uses backtracking and auto-tuning on stage. In early December, Oliver Anthony uploaded a 15-minute YouTube video laying out his thoughts on the music industry, explaining why he’s moving to ministry and dragging Nashville. However, one portion of the video caught the public’s attention when he called out an artist for using auto-tune and backing tracks during their shows . “A lot of these mainstream acts…everybody runs backing tracks. Like I’ll never forget, I won’t say who the act is, but I think it was at South Carolina at the Myrtle Beach one, the band who played after us, that dude had six auto-tune modulators on a pedal board on stage, just to help him with vocal pitch live. And they had backing tracks running, drum loops running.” https://twitter.com/Smuphy/status/1865246608092250503?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1865246608092250503%7Ctwgr%5Eaf3cfa392f1e00f1dd7ca6c3d143dd42459f0ede%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whiskeyriff.com%2F2024%2F12%2F08%2F100-fabricated-lie-parker-mccollum-responds-after-oliver-anthony-implies-he-uses-autotune-backing-tracks%2F Six Auto-Tune modulators… what does that even mean? While Anthony never explicitly named who the artist was, he said exactly where the show was and that the “dude” played right after him. Given the obvious clues, social media was quick to connect the dots that he was talking about Parker McCollum. Once word began circulating that McCollum was more than likely the artist in question, he quickly addressed Anthony and shut down his accusations. “Hey guys, per the Oliver Anthony interview or whatever it was claiming that he saw drum loop modular or whatever he called it, I don’t even know what that is…100% fabricated lie. Never ever, ever, ever one time have I ever used auto-tune or a drum loop or anything fake of any kind on stage. Me and my guys are ripping it the real deal every single night. There has never been any single part of our show, not one note, that was not live, raw, and in the moment. 100% fabricated story. That is 100% a lie. That will never change. We will always be out there swinging it as a real band, trying to do our best to respect country music. So, that’s all I’ve got to say on it, and that’s where it needs to end.” https://www.instagram.com/reel/DDVTsS7SnKy/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=132bf16c-05a2-4152-819c-5f79082026b2 Fans and fellow artists flooded the comments in support of McCollum. If you’ve ever been to a Parker McCollum live show, you know his microphone is ON. The Texas native has never been afraid to let it rip, and spent years cutting his teeth in Texas bar rooms, earning fans at every stop along the way, before he ever received a major label record deal… it’s just such an absurd comment from Oliver. And while it’s not necessarily uncommon for larger acts (probably more common in the pop world) to use some backing tracks or auto-tune during their shows, especially in larger venues or for televised performances like awards shows or halftime shows, Parker McCollum isn’t one of them. And Oliver Anthony began his statement with “I’ll never forget” so I’m going to assume he’s not mixing up the artist in his mind. He was very specific with the details of who was performing. But either way, Anthony’s rant gives off the vibe that he is a bitter guy who doesn’t quite know what he’s talking about. Weeks later, McCollum’s fans still have a bone to pick with the “Rich Men North Of Richmond” singer as they yell during McCollum concerts to stand with him and not with Antony. After the fan yelled “F**k Oliver Anthony” in Little Rock, McCollum responded to the fan, once again noting that he and his band are 100% live every night on stage. “Word… And I just want you guys to know that when you come see my show, when you come see me and these guys right here, there ain’t a damn thing fake about it. You understand what I’m sayin’? Now, I’ll be the first to admit, that there’s probably a lot of nights that I do need Auto-Tune. There’s even some nights that I wish I had Auto-Tune. But for as long as there is air in my lungs, I will always get on stage and respect country music and do this thing the real way, the right way, live and in the moment. I write all the songs. Me and this band are live, every single note you are hearing is happening in real time, there ain’t a damn thing fake on this stage. So whether you like these songs or not, whether you think I’m good or not, I don’t give a damn, but you best know… this is the real deal up here.” Parker is standing on business and ensuring his fans know Anthony’s statement is 100% untrue —although the majority never questioned that. However, I can’t blame McCollum for driving this home; when someone makes a claim like that, which could be detrimental to your career, you will defend yourself until the bitter end. Props to him for standing up for himself… a lot of artists would just leave it alone Check it out: Watch Parker and the boys perform “Burn It Down” later in the set: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3520peWiAK0

Parker McCollum has always been known for his authenticity and his dedication to his music, but recently he showed just how genuine he truly is when he responded to a fan yelling inappropriate comments during one of his shows.

During a recent concert, a fan yelled out "F*** Oliver Anthony," a reference to a popular song by McCollum. Instead of ignoring the comment or brushing it off, McCollum stopped the show and addressed the situation head-on.

In a video that has since gone viral, McCollum can be seen calmly addressing the fan, explaining that he doesn’t condone that kind of behavior at his shows. He emphasized the importance of respect and kindness towards others, and made it clear that he would not tolerate any negativity in his audience.

Fans have praised McCollum for handling the situation with grace and maturity, proving once again that he truly cares about his fans and the message he puts out into the world. With his response, he not only shut down the negativity but also set a powerful example for how to handle disrespectful behavior in a positive and constructive way.

It’s moments like these that remind us why we love Parker McCollum and why his music resonates with so many people. Here’s to more artists like him who use their platform for good and stand up for what is right.

Hilaria Baldwin ‘forgets’ the English word ‘onions’ while making ‘traditional’ Spanish dish for holidays

It’s the accent that just won’t quit.

Never mind that she grew up as plain old Hillary Hayward-Thomas in an upscale neighborhood of Boston, it was a case of ‘feliz navidad’ at Casa Baldwin.

Video obtained exclusively by DailyMail.com shows self-styled Spaniard Hilaria Baldwin treating her holiday guests to ‘traditional’ Spanish tortilla dished up with a hefty side order of accented Spanglish.

Dressed in a plaid onesie, Hilaria, 40, is seen standing in the kitchen boasting about the authenticity of the recipe in her faux Spanish tones.

Speaking in a heavily accented baby voice she says: ‘I learned this from when I was a kid, don’t look it up online because you’ll learn something different.’

The secret to her tortilla is, she says, potatoes ‘not cut too tiny.’

Turning to her friend who is cooking alongside her, she then appears to forget the English word ‘onions’ as, referring to actor husband Alec, she reveals: ‘My husband hates…cebollas.’

Given that she appears to have entirely forgotten she isn’t actually Spanish, the occasional word slip is perhaps unsurprising.

Her friend comes to the rescue helpfully reminding her, ‘onions’. English is such a tricky language.

It’s not the first time Hilaria has stumbled over her native tongue.

In 2015 she appeared in a now infamous six-minute segment on the Today Show in which she made ‘authentic’ gazpacho listing the ingredients and at one point appearing to forget the English word ‘cucumber‘.

‘We have very few ingredients,’ she told Telemundo TV host Evi Siskos with whom she appeared that day.

‘We have tomatoes, we have, um, how do you say in English? Cucumber!’

At one point she appears to forget the English word 'onions,' and refers to them by their Spanish name 'cebollas', instead

Now she’s at it again as she lisps her way through a recipe drawn from her ‘Spanish’ childhood.

‘I grind cebollas and ajo [garlic] together,’ she rambles on in her babyish Iberian jumble.

Mealtimes it seems, just like everything in Casa Baldwin, are ‘Spanish flavored.’

It’s how the couple described their June 2012 New York wedding in which they exchanged vows and rings engraved with the words, ‘Somos un buen equipo,’ which means, ‘We’re a great team,’ in Spanish.

The following year Baldwin, 66, confidently informed talk show host David Letterman that his wife was Spanish.

He was seemingly oblivious to the fact that Hilaria was born and bred in Massachusetts and merely vacationed on the resort island of Majorca, some 130 miles from the Spanish mainland and where her retired parents now live as ex-pats.

Her parents bought the five-bed, five-bath house in June 1987 when their daughter was just three years old and didn’t move out till she had turned 28

A 2014 Elle article referred to her as ‘half-Spanish’ and elsewhere she has been written of as ‘bi-cultural’ which is true if she’s counting both her real and her appropriated culture.

Doubling down on her origin myth, Hilaria and Baldwin have given Spanish names to all their seven children – Carmen Gabriela, 10, Rafael Thomas, 8, Leonardo Angel Charles, 7, Romeo Alejandro David, 6, Eduardo Pao Lucas, 3, Maria Lucia Victoria, 3, and Ilaria Catalina Irena, 20 months.

They are known collectively as the ‘Baldwinitas.’

Four years ago, DailyMail.com exposed the truth of the yoga teacher’s Boston background as, despite her agency’s website listing her birthplace as Majorca she spent most of her childhood in a $4million 100-year-old house in Boston’s Beacon Hill area.

Records show that her parents, attorney David Thomas and Harvard Medical School professor Kathryn Hayward, bought a five-bedroom, five-bath house on Pinckney Street in June 1987 when Hilaria was just three and didn’t move out until she had turned 28.

Neighbors there remembered her as a ‘very entitled young lady.’

What they had no recollection of was any Spanish accent.

Hilaria’s brother, Jeremy, went to Majorca on a school exchange trip which, according to one neighbor, was when the family started to fall in love with the place.

But Jeremy’s attempt to live in Spain foundered as he ‘didn’t fit in, so came back’.

Hilaria’s Walter Mitty heritage became public when she posted a picture of herself in black lingerie holding her son Eduardo which comic Amy Schumer then sent up.

Hilaria posted a video of herself responding to Schumer’s dig but apparently forgot that she was supposed to have a Spanish accent and spoke with a non-specific American one.

Leni Briscoe, a former classmate from the elite Cambridge School of Weston – where annual tuition costs $60,850 for day students and $75,200 for boarders – tweeted: ‘You have to admire Hilaria Baldwin’s commitment to her decade-long grift where she impersonates a Spanish person.’

Hilaria Baldwin, a self-proclaimed Spanish heritage enthusiast, recently made headlines for all the wrong reasons when she “forgot” the English word for “onions” while attempting to make a “traditional” Spanish dish for the holidays.

In a now-deleted Instagram video, Baldwin can be seen confidently cooking in her kitchen, claiming to be preparing a classic Spanish recipe passed down from her family. However, when it came time to add onions to the dish, she hesitated and struggled to find the right word in English, ultimately settling on “onions” in a thick Spanish accent.

Critics were quick to call out the authenticity of Baldwin’s claim to Spanish heritage, pointing out that her inability to recall a basic English word raised questions about the sincerity of her cultural appropriation. Many also criticized her for perpetuating harmful stereotypes and misrepresenting Spanish cuisine for personal gain.

Baldwin has since issued a statement addressing the incident, claiming that she misspoke in the heat of the moment and that her love for Spanish culture is genuine. However, the internet remains skeptical of her intentions, with many calling for her to be held accountable for her actions.

This latest blunder is just one in a series of controversies surrounding Baldwin’s Spanish identity, further fueling the ongoing debate about cultural appropriation and the importance of respecting and honoring diverse heritages.

    Ay dios mio!

Hilaria Baldwin found herself in another Spanish-speaking pickle after a video showed the self-proclaimed Spaniard forgetting how to pronounce a commonly used English word despite being from Massachusetts.

In the clip obtained by Daily Mail, Alec Baldwin’s wife — real name Hillary Hayward-Thomas — was cooking a “traditional” Spanish dish for her holiday guests when she blanked on the word “onions.”

Dressed in flannel pajamas, the 40-year-old yoga instructor boasted about the authenticity of her recipe in her best Spanglish accent.

“I learned this from when I was a kid, don’t look it up online because you’ll learn something different,” Baldwin said in what appeared to be a heavy faux accent while in the kitchen with a friend.

She shared that the secret to her tortilla dish was not cutting the potatoes “too tiny.”

While continuing to talk about the recipe, Baldwin struggled to remember the word “onions” while telling the camera, “My husband hates…cebollas [onions in Spanish].”

Luckily, her friend helped her out, reminding her of the English word.

This isn’t the first time that the actor’s wife has been absentminded when it comes to the English language.

She caught flak in 2015 when she forgot the English word for “cucumber” during a six-minute segment on the “Today” show.

While making “authentic” gazpacho, Baldwin listed the ingredients.

“We have very few ingredients,” she told Telemundo TV host Evi Siskos, with whom she appeared alongside that day.

“We have tomatoes, we have, um, how do you say in English? Cucumber!”

Fans immediately slammed Baldwin, accusing her of faking her accent while noting she sounded English in several of her social media videos. Some of her former classmates also addressed the backlash.

“I went to high school with her. Genuinely lovely person, I recall, but fully a white girl from Cambridge,” one posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Another said: “I went to high school with her. She was perfectly nice and serious about ballroom dancing. Her name was indeed Hillary Hayward-Thomas and she did not have her current accent.

“I believe she and her brother Jeremy (also nice) grew up in Boston and were white people.”

After being called out on her heritage, Baldwin defended herself and admitted her name was Hillary.

“There’s some stuff that needs to be clarified,” she stated. “There’s been some questions about where I’m born, I’m born in Boston … I spent some of my childhood in Boston, some of my childhood in Spain, my family, my brother, my parents, my nephew, everybody is over there in Spain now, I’m here.”

She also claimed she grew up speaking both English and Spanish and wants to raise her seven children to be bilingual.

She attended Cambridge School of Weston School in Weston, Massachusetts, and told “Motherhood, Marriage & Miscarriages” in 2020 that she moved to New York from Spain when she was 19 to attend NYU: “I came for school and I never, ever left,” per Page Six.

While she lives in the US, Baldwin’s parents, Dr. Kathryn Hayward and David Thomas, reportedly live in Mallorca after leaving the United States in 2011.

Hilaria Baldwin, the wife of actor Alec Baldwin, has once again found herself in the spotlight for her questionable behavior. This time, the controversy stems from a video she posted on social media in which she appears to struggle to remember the English word for ‘onions’ while cooking a ‘traditional’ Spanish dish.

This incident comes just a few years after Baldwin faced backlash for allegedly faking a Spanish accent and claiming to have grown up in Spain, when in reality she was born and raised in Boston.

In the video, Baldwin can be seen preparing a paella, a dish typically associated with Spanish cuisine. However, she appears to be stumped when trying to recall the English word for ‘onions’, instead referring to them as “the things that make you cry.”

Many have taken to social media to criticize Baldwin for her apparent lack of authenticity and cultural appropriation. Some have pointed out that her behavior is disrespectful to those who actually come from Spanish-speaking backgrounds and have faced discrimination for their heritage.

It remains to be seen how Baldwin will respond to this latest controversy, but it is clear that her actions have once again sparked a heated debate about cultural identity and privilege.
