  • Super Bowl receiver DeVonta Smith: ‘Seeing the work that he put in, it kind of inspired me’

Cletis Gordon didn’t have a long career in the NFL. The cornerback played in 31 regular-season games and three playoff contests across four seasons, mainly on special teams. But Gordon does have a connection to Super Bowl LIX.

Gordon was a high school standout in Amite, Louisiana, before playing at Jackson State and entering the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2006.

Amite also is the hometown of Philadelphia wide receiver DeVonta Smith, who’ll be on the field when the Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL championship game at 5:30 p.m. CST Sunday at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

“I wouldn’t say there was someone I modeled my game after,” Smith said at a Wednesday press conference. “I had guys before me. For me, Cletis Gordon was the guy that was in the NFL when I was growing up from Amite. My first camp going to was his camp. So not even for football, but just seeing the dedication he had, the work that he put in, it kind of inspired me.”

From Amite, Smith has gone on to become an All-American at Alabama, where he caught the winning touchdown pass in overtime in the CFP national-championship game for the 2017 season, won the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award for an undefeated, CFP national-championship team in 2020 and set the SEC career records for receiving yards and touchdown receptions.

Smith entered the NFL as the 10th pick in the 2021 draft, has 308 receptions for 4,011 yards and 27 touchdowns in 63 regular-season games and holds the Philadelphia record for postseason receiving yards.

Now his second Super Bowl has brought him home, with the site of Sunday’s Super Bowl LIX about 70 miles from Amite.

Smith said it was exciting to be able to “play this game on the biggest stage in front of” family and friends.

“It’s a blessing to come back home,” Smith said. “I get to see the family members that I don’t get to see throughout the season. I get some good food.”

Smith said he especially missed jambalaya while pursuing his NFL career.

In his return to his home state, Smith teamed with TCL, the official TV partner of the NFL, to present a 98-inch television to Vincent Sanders, who has been cutting Smith’s hair since the future football star was a little boy.

“I just wanted to express my gratitude and tell you how much I appreciate you,” Smith said in a presentation video. “You’ve always inspired greatness in me. From the same hometown, you’ve been backing me since Day 1 from Alabama to Philly.”

But Sanders won’t be watching Smith on the TV on Sunday. He’ll be in the Superdome.

“I built a shelf in my barber shop in Louisiana,” Sanders told the Philadelphia Tribune, “and I put a plasma TV on top, and it had four shelves. When DeVonta was little, he told me, ‘One day, that’s where I’m going to put the Heisman.’”

Smith’s first Super Bowl came two years ago in Glendale Arizona, where Philadelphia lost to Kansas City 38-35. Smith had seven receptions for 100 yards in that game.

Smith has played against the Chiefs two other times. He had seven receptions for 122 yards in a 42-30 loss on Oct. 3, 2021, and six receptions for 99 yards in a 21-17 victory on Nov. 20, 2023.

In Kansas City’s 65 seasons, 152 players have collected at least 300 receiving yards against the Chiefs. But only two in that group have averaged at least 100 receiving yards per game against Kansas City – Pro Football Hall of Fame member Andre Johnson with 36 receptions for 617 yards in six games with the Houston Texans and Smith with 20 receptions for 321 yards in three games with the Eagles.

But Smith isn’t concerned about his stats on Sunday.

“I think people overlook the most important stat, which is winning the game,” Smith said. “We don’t care if it’s us running the ball, passing the ball. We’re going to do whatever’s working.”

DeVonta Smith, the star wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles, recently opened up about the impact that former teammate and mentor, Julio Jones, had on his career. In an interview leading up to the Super Bowl, Smith reflected on the time he spent with Jones at Alabama and how it shaped him into the player he is today.

“Seeing the work that he put in, it kind of inspired me,” Smith said of Jones. “He was always the first one in the building and the last one to leave. He never took a practice off and always gave 110% on the field. That dedication and work ethic really rubbed off on me and pushed me to be better every day.”

Smith and Jones formed a dynamic duo at Alabama, with Jones taking on a mentorship role for the younger receiver. Smith credits Jones with teaching him valuable lessons about the game and helping him develop his skills both on and off the field.

Now, as Smith prepares to play in his first Super Bowl, he looks back on his time with Jones with gratitude and appreciation. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without Julio,” Smith said. “He pushed me to be the best version of myself and I will always be grateful for that.”

As Smith gears up to take the field on the biggest stage in football, he carries with him the lessons and inspiration he gained from his time with Jones. With his sights set on victory, Smith is ready to showcase the hard work and dedication that has brought him to this moment.

  • New CFPB head, Scott Bessent, orders staff to halt work : NPR

This photo shows Scott Bessent at the U.S. Capitol in January. Photographed from the shoulders up, he's wearing a blue suit, a blue tie, a white shirt and glasses.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been tapped by President Trump to be acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Here, he appears before the Senate Finance Committee on Jan. 16.

Scott Bessent, who was confirmed as Treasury secretary last week, has been named acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Bessent replaces Rohit Chopra, who was fired on Saturday.

In an internal email shared with NPR, staff members were instructed to immediately cease much of the bureau’s work, “unless expressly approved by the Acting Director or required by law”. That includes a halt on issuing or approving proposed or final rules or guidance, and suspending the effective dates of all final rules that have been issued but have not yet become effective.

Staff members were also instructed not to commence or settle enforcement actions, nor to issue any public communications of any type, including research papers. The directive was made “[i]n order to promote consistency with the goals of the Administration,” the email said.

Bessent, a wealthy hedge fund manager, was already expected to be a business-friendly choice to lead the Treasury. Now he will lead the CFPB, the federal consumer watchdog, at least for a time.

“I look forward to working with the CFPB to advance President Trump’s agenda to lower costs for the American people and accelerate economic growth,” Bessent said in a statement.

CFPB has had several lawsuits underway, including enforcement actions against Capital One, Walmart, and Zelle and its parent banks.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who had a key role in the formation of the agency and who serves on the Senate Banking Committee, criticized Bessent’s order halting the bureau’s work.

“Shutting down CFPB enforcement actions that are on the verge of delivering money into the pockets of working people is at odds with President Trump’s claim that he wants to lower costs for families,” Warren said in a statement.

Chopra had led the bureau since 2021 and frequently took on big banks. Under his leadership, the CFPB issued a number of regulations, including limiting overdraft fees, capping credit card late fees and banning medical debt from appearing on credit reports.

The Consumer Bankers Association, which represents retail banks, cheered the choice of Bessent and suggested he should rescind certain rules promulgated during the Chopra era.

But consumer advocates decried the tapping of Bessent.

“While [Trump] parades a crowd of corporate lobbyists, billionaire donors, and Wall Street insiders like Scott Bessent to lead our country, we’re looking at the end of basic protections for American consumers,” said Tony Carrk of Accountable.US, a corruption watchdog group, in a statement.

The CFPB is an independent bureau within the Federal Reserve System. It’s funded outside of the congressional appropriations process, and its funding comes from the Fed. The bureau was created in 2010 by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

That legislation was passed following the 2008 financial crisis, and it was intended to protect consumers from overreach by financial institutions and help prevent another crisis.

In a surprising turn of events, the newly appointed head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Scott Bessent, has reportedly ordered staff to halt all work. This unexpected directive has left many employees scratching their heads and wondering what the future holds for the agency.

As NPR reports, Bessent, who was recently appointed by President Biden, has not provided any explanation for his decision to cease all work at the CFPB. This move has raised concerns among consumer advocates and lawmakers who fear that important consumer protection initiatives may be shelved indefinitely.

The sudden halt in work comes at a critical time for the CFPB, as the agency has been actively working to address issues such as predatory lending, debt collection practices, and financial fraud. Many are now wondering what this means for the future of consumer protection in the United States.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as we wait to see what the next steps will be for the CFPB under Scott Bessent’s leadership.

  • Actor James Marsden Has ‘A Desire To Have More Meaning In My Work’

Over his 30-year career so far, Emmy-nominated actor James Marsden has consistently grabbed our full attention with his many memorable on-screen performances. From playing Cyclops in the X-Men films and “the other man” Lon Hammond in The Notebook to Corny Collins in Hairspray, Prince Edward in the Enchanted films and Teddy Flood on the Westworld series, Marsden, 51, has built quite the impressive career for himself, with plenty of longevity, something many working actors could only dream of happening.

Fresh off of his third box office hit Sonic the Hedgehog film, Marsden can now be seen in the new Hulu series, Paradise, where he plays the President of the United States. Created by This Is Us mastermind Dan Fogelman and co-starring Sterling K. Brown and Julianne Nicholson, Paradise is a wildly gripping political thriller, with several twists and turns, that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Knowing that Marsden is no stranger to playing a President, as he previously played John F. Kennedy in Lee Daniels’ 2013 film The Butler, I wondered what it was about his Paradise character, President Cal Bradford, that intrigued him in making this his next role to take on.

Marsden said, “I think the answer to that question is this was a portrayal of a President in a very unconventional way. He’s kind of rewriting the definition of what a President looks like. We’re getting to see somebody who’s in that position of power, who doesn’t really want the job. I think he was sort of bred to be this – to get into politics by his father and a long line of Bradfords doing exceptional things. I think that decision to get into politics was made for him, not by himself. So, here he is in a position that he doesn’t necessarily want to be in, that I feel like he does feel qualified for on some level, as a man who ultimately when it gets serious, that he will try to make the right decision for the good of the people.”

So, through Marsden’s experiences in filming Paradise and at this stage of his career today, I was curious if he has perhaps noticed that his interests in storytelling have evolved in recent years.

“Yeah, of course,” Marsden said. “I mean, as you grow through life and mature into ‘an old man,’ things come into focus more clearly of what’s really important to you – how you want to spend your time. From a storytelling perspective, what good can you put out there? Whether it’s a laugh – something crazy like Jury Duty with humor. What truly resonates with you? When you’re young, you take jobs and you take work to work. You do the best and I still loved it – you want to make it as great as possible, but you also want to work. As you get older, if you’re fortunate enough, and I feel very privileged to say this, I can take work – it feels like when I really want to, but only when I feel like there’s something to be said. Not a message necessarily, but how I can move somebody with this story. Here’s maybe a feeling or a thought or a story or a character that could put a smile on somebody’s face, or make that person reconsider certain parts about the human experience that they might not have touched on in their experience in life. I want to play less one-dimensional bad guys. I have a desire to have more meaning in my work now.”

Beyond Marsden’s ongoing dedication to his acting craft, he is also a father of three to Jack, Mary and William. So, I asked him – Who is James Marsden in 2025? What motivates you most and brings you the greatest purpose and passion to your days lately?

“Oh man! Well, my children do and they always have. Time does. I think when you’re younger, you don’t value time as much. I love working, but I’ve been sort of slowly reevaluating how much time I do want to be working and how much time I want to be living. One of the things that’s in the job description with being an actor is the feeling that you’re never going to work again. That’s been with me for a really, really long time. What that’s caused is a great fortune in a business that’s been very good to me, but a lot of time away – a lot of time traveling, a lot of time working. I feel like, nowadays, I want to really make sure that I insert value in my time, more than just on the work level.”

Now that Marsden is somewhat seasoned in knowing how to play a President on-screen, following his experiences over these eight episodes of the new Paradise Hulu series, I was curious what Marsden would make his very first plan of action, if he were President, and what he would want to do for the world.

“Get everyone to chill the f—- out,” Marsden said with a laugh. “Let’s all realize that we all breathe the same air and we’re not that different. I feel like things that bring us together: music, love, the feelings of belonging, acceptance, laughter can be unifying. I know that that’s maybe a little bit of a loosey-goosey, sweet thing to say, but it’s powerful. I know there are things in the way that we can’t just ‘John Lennon’ it through life. It’s going to be complicated, but no bloodshed – no wars. That’s enough. I think that’s an antiquated solution and it’s not a solution. That’d be a big one for me. I don’t know if I have the answer to it or how, but I would like to see that done away with. Now with globalization, we are all feeling much closer to each other than we ever did before, that maybe the good of that could be understanding each other a little more.”

Actor James Marsden has recently opened up about his desire to have more meaning in his work. Known for his roles in popular films such as “The Notebook” and “X-Men”, Marsden has expressed a longing to take on projects that have a deeper impact on audiences.

In a recent interview, Marsden shared that he is drawn to roles that challenge him and allow him to explore different aspects of his craft. He stated, “I want to do projects that make people think, that make people feel something. I want to be a part of stories that have a lasting impact.”

Marsden’s commitment to seeking out meaningful projects has already been evident in his recent work. From his role in the critically acclaimed series “Westworld” to his upcoming projects, Marsden is dedicated to pushing boundaries and taking on roles that push him out of his comfort zone.

As he continues to pursue roles that resonate with audiences, it is clear that James Marsden is committed to making a lasting impact in the entertainment industry. Fans can look forward to seeing more of his powerful performances in the future.

  • Remote Monitoring for Remote Work: How to Stay Connected and Productive

Remote Monitoring for Remote Work: How to Stay Connected and Productive

Remote work has become increasingly common in recent years, with more and more companies offering employees the flexibility to work from home or other remote locations. While there are many benefits to remote work, such as increased flexibility and reduced commute times, there are also challenges that come with working outside of a traditional office setting. One of the biggest challenges for remote workers is staying connected and productive while working remotely.

Remote monitoring is a key tool for remote workers to stay connected and productive. Remote monitoring allows managers and team members to track and monitor the progress of remote workers, ensuring that work is being completed on time and to a high standard. Remote monitoring can take many forms, from tracking software that monitors employees’ computer activity to regular check-ins and progress reports.

One of the most important aspects of remote monitoring is communication. It’s important for remote workers to stay in regular contact with their managers and team members, whether through email, phone calls, or video conferences. Regular communication helps to keep everyone on the same page and ensures that tasks are being completed efficiently and effectively.

Another key aspect of remote monitoring is setting clear goals and expectations. Remote workers should have a clear understanding of what is expected of them and what goals they need to achieve. This helps to keep remote workers focused and motivated, as they have a clear roadmap for success.

In addition to setting clear goals and expectations, remote workers should also have a designated workspace that is conducive to productivity. This could be a home office, a co-working space, or even a coffee shop. Having a designated workspace helps to create a separation between work and home life, making it easier for remote workers to focus on their tasks and stay productive.

Remote monitoring also involves using technology to track and monitor work progress. There are many tools and software available that can help remote workers and managers stay connected and productive, such as project management tools, time tracking software, and communication platforms.

Overall, remote monitoring is essential for remote workers to stay connected and productive. By setting clear goals and expectations, maintaining regular communication, and using technology to track progress, remote workers can effectively manage their time and tasks while working remotely. With the right tools and strategies in place, remote work can be just as productive and successful as working in a traditional office setting.

  • Patriots QB Drake Maye excited to work with Mike Vrabel, Josh McDaniels in 2025

New England’s 2024 season resulted in a 4-13 record, leading to Jerod Mayo’s exit and Vrabel’s hiring.

Even though Vrabel has not coached since he parted ways with the Tennessee Titans in 2024, he was one of the most experienced coaches in this year’s cycle. In his six seasons in Tennessee, the Titans had a 54-45 record with three playoff trips. Vrabel also won the 2021 AP NFL Coach of the Year award.

In Vrabel’s introductory news conference as the Patriots head coach, he said he wanted to get “great people around” Maye. One piece of the puzzle in attempting to unlock Maye’s potential is their new offensive coordinator. The Patriots hired Josh McDaniels as the team’s OC, a familiar figure who held the title on two previous occasions in New England.

Maye praised McDaniels’ coaching history, including his work with Tom Brady.

“Coach McDaniels, obviously, what he’s done there and the success he’s had. Fortunate to be able to have a guy come in who’s done it at a high level and learn from him coaching one of the best ever and the best ever, in my opinion, Tom (Brady),” Maye said of working with McDaniels. “Got a great chance to go back and all those years of film you have in a little database, it’s all their play calls and all coach McDaniels’ stuff and what he did with Tom. It’s fortunate for me to go back and study it up and get ready for this next season.”

Now, Vrabel and McDaniels will be tasked to turn things around in New England while cultivating a promising signal-caller in Maye.

In an exciting turn of events, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with head coach Mike Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels in the 2025 season.

Maye, a highly touted prospect coming out of college, has been making waves in the NFL with his impressive skills and leadership on the field. Now, he will have the chance to learn from two experienced and successful coaches in Vrabel and McDaniels.

Vrabel, a former NFL player turned coach, has led the Patriots to multiple playoff appearances and is known for his tough, no-nonsense approach to coaching. McDaniels, on the other hand, is a brilliant offensive mind who has helped develop some of the league’s top quarterbacks.

With these two coaching powerhouses in his corner, Maye is sure to continue to grow and thrive in the NFL. Patriots fans are eagerly anticipating what the future holds for their talented young quarterback under the guidance of Vrabel and McDaniels. Stay tuned for an exciting 2025 season! #Patriots #DrakeMaye #MikeVrabel #JoshMcDaniels #NFL

  • Drake Maye excited to work with new Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel: ‘He’s been awesome’

The New England Patriots have their quarterback of the future. Drake Maye played well in 2024 despite being thrown into poor circumstances, completing 66.6% of his passes at an average of 6.7 yards per attempt, with 15 touchdowns against 10 interceptions in 13 starts. He also ran for 421 yards and two additional scores on his 54 carries. Considering the offensive line in front of him and the pass-catching corps at his disposal, it was a pretty fantastic rookie season.

But the Patriots themselves were kind of a disaster, and so the Jerod Mayo-led coaching staff was let go after just one season. To replace Mayo, the Patriots reached back into the past to hire Mike Vrabel, the former head coach of the Tennessee Titans whose best years as a player also came in New England. And Vrabel himself reached into the past for an offensive coordinator, bringing in longtime former Pats OC Josh McDaniels to run the offense.

And Maye is excited to work with them both.

“Yeah, he reached out to me and we got on the phone. He’s been awesome,” Maye said of Vrabel, via Sirius XM. “Obviously, a guy who’s done it and played in the league and won a Super Bowl, you have a respect of what he’s done and seeing what he’s done. I think the biggest thing is he’s been a head coach and he knows what it’s like. So excited to get up to New England and get things going.”

As for McDaniels, he seemed enthused by the idea of playing for a guy who helped direct the successes of the player who is considered by many to be the greatest quarterback of all time.

“Coach McDaniels, obviously, what he’s done there and the success he’s had. Fortunate to be able to have a guy come in who’s done it at a high level and learn from him coaching one of the best ever and the best ever, in my opinion, Tom [Brady],” Maye said. “Got a great chance to go back and all those years of film you have in a little database, it’s all their play calls and all coach McDaniels’ stuff and what he did with Tom. It’s fortunate for me to go back and study it up and get ready for this next season.”

Maye has a chance to build on what he did as a rookie, through the Patriots. The Patriots should at the very least be a better-coached team in 2025 than they were in 2024, and that should help Maye raise his baseline level of play. They’ll need to give him a great deal more help if they want him to fulfill his potential, though, and that’s something that will have to be done this offseason.

Drake Maye, the rookie quarterback for the New England Patriots, is thrilled to be working with the team’s new head coach, Mike Vrabel. In a recent interview, Maye expressed his excitement about playing under Vrabel’s leadership, saying, “He’s been awesome so far. I can already tell that he’s a great coach and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us this season.”

Vrabel, who was hired by the Patriots earlier this year, has already made a positive impression on the team with his energy, enthusiasm, and innovative coaching style. Maye is looking forward to learning from Vrabel and believes that the new head coach will help him reach his full potential as a player.

With Vrabel at the helm, the Patriots are gearing up for a successful season and Maye is excited to be a part of the team’s journey. Stay tuned for more updates on Maye’s progress as he continues to work with Coach Vrabel and the rest of the Patriots coaching staff.

Cybersecurity for Remote Work: Ensuring Data Security in a Virtual Environment

As the world continues to adapt to the new normal of remote work, the importance of cybersecurity in a virtual environment has become more crucial than ever. With employees working from various locations and accessing company data through different devices, the risk of cyber threats has significantly increased. Ensuring data security in a remote work setting is essential to protect sensitive information and prevent data breaches.

One of the key challenges of remote work is the lack of control over the security measures in place on employees’ personal devices. Without the protection of a secure office network, employees may be more vulnerable to malware, phishing attacks, and other cyber threats. To mitigate these risks, organizations must implement robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard their data.

One of the first steps in ensuring data security for remote work is to establish clear policies and guidelines for employees. This includes setting up strong passwords, using multi-factor authentication, and regularly updating software and security patches. Employees should also be educated on the importance of cybersecurity best practices, such as avoiding clicking on suspicious links or downloading unknown attachments.

Another important aspect of cybersecurity in a virtual environment is the use of secure communication tools. Encrypted messaging platforms and virtual private networks (VPNs) can help protect sensitive information during remote work. It is also essential to secure company data with strong encryption methods to prevent unauthorized access.

Regular monitoring and auditing of remote work systems are crucial to detect any potential security breaches or vulnerabilities. Implementing intrusion detection systems and conducting regular security assessments can help identify and address any weaknesses in the organization’s cybersecurity posture.

In addition, organizations should have a robust incident response plan in place to effectively respond to any security incidents that may occur during remote work. This includes having a designated team responsible for handling cybersecurity incidents, as well as clear procedures for reporting and responding to data breaches.

Overall, ensuring data security in a virtual environment requires a proactive approach to cybersecurity. By implementing strong security measures, educating employees on best practices, and regularly monitoring and auditing systems, organizations can protect their sensitive information and prevent data breaches in a remote work setting. By prioritizing cybersecurity, organizations can continue to operate efficiently and securely in the age of remote work.
