Early in the film, Johnny and Ponyboy get into a fist fight with the rival Socs gang. In the confrontation, Johnny fatally stabs a Socs member to death.
The rest of the film sees Johnny and Ponyboy on the run and later trying to clear their names as Johnny acted in self-defense. Johnny later shows his heroism when he saves a group of kids from a church fire, only to break his back in the process and succumb to his injuries. His dying words, “Stay gold, Ponyboy,” are The Outsiders‘ most iconic quote.

The actor has discussed working with The Outsiders director Francis Ford Coppola at length. In an interview with Us Weekly at the 2024 Director’s Guild Honors, Macchio said Coppla would throw him “curveballs” in order to challenge him. He says the acclaimed director wanted Macchio to turn his analytical brain off so the acting would feel organic. Of working with Coppola, Macchio said,
“[Coppola] kept telling me to do it again and to stop thinking. One time, he gave me a little rock and said, ‘Don’t look at this rock. Put it in your pocket, and during the scene, I want you to think about what color it is,’’’ he said. “And it actually helped because it took me out of over-analyzing.”
The Outsiders has stayed with Macchio throughout his career. In June 2024, he took his family to see The Outsiders Broadway musical. New Patriots coach Mike Vrabel ‘beyond comfortable’ working with personnel executive Eliot Wolf
Much of what Vrabel has said since being hired seems to be centered on building a rock-solid program that exudes consistency, regardless of initial results. It seems intentional; after all, the Patriots were anything but consistent under Mayo, a fact that extended from the field to the coach’s own dealings in public relations.
Vrabel, however, has made it clear he intends to steady the ship, and as Wolf hopefully supplies him with talent upgrades over the next year and beyond, the coach will be willing to adjust accordingly with the same goal in mind: return the Patriots to prominence.
“Our best player was our running back,” Vrabel explained when asked if his team’s offense would lean on the run as much as his Titans teams did. “So we tried to structure the offense, build the offense around what we felt like was our best player and what was our strength. When we did have pieces around Derrick (Henry) that we felt comfortable with, we threw it just as successfully as we ran it.
“You base whatever system and scheme that you have around the players you have. I do think there’s a lot of versatility around, not only myself but also, hopefully, the coaches that we hire.”
The scheme starts with quarterback Drake Maye, who proved himself as the signal-caller of the future in his rookie season despite operating in an offense that lacked quality talent around him. Vrabel didn’t shy from Maye’s importance to the team’s long-term plans, but stressed he wants his team to remain “efficient and explosive.”
Speaking of the offense, Vrabel still needs to fill out his staff, including offensive coordinator. Just as Vrabel was an obvious choice in New England, many expect him to dial another past Patriots lieutenant, Josh McDaniels, during his hiring process.
Vrabel wouldn’t commit to hiring McDaniels outright, instead turning back to the same goal: Build a dependable program regardless of the names associated with it.
“Um … yeah, I mean, I’m going to look at every possible candidate that can help us,” Vrabel said. “We’re going to start that process today, this afternoon, and visit with some great coaches and then we’ll see where things go.”
Judging by his time in Tennessee, Vrabel has already demonstrated he can build a winning team. His quest to do the same in New England begins now.

The manager addressed questions on Raheem Sterling, Kai Havertz, and Big Gabi, advised Bukayo Saka to take a holiday, and once again urged the crowd to create a lively atmosphere on Saturday night.
On Raheem Sterling’s recent performances…
Yeah, for sure we can get a lot from Rash. We are getting much more than we used to get [from him] a few weeks back. Obviously, his involvement has been much higher and he’s going to be capital. Now he’s got more rhythm and more minutes, he had an injury that he’s coming back from, but, overall, I think he can give us a lot.
On Gabriel Magalhaes’ being a serious goal threat…
At the present time, very much. When you look at his numbers and the type of goals and the occasions when he has scored the goals, they are very important goals as well. He will be right up there.
On whether he’s been given assurances that spending in January won’t affect his summer budget…
Assurances in this industry, I think that nobody can give you because it’s related to performance, what we achieve, how we finish the season. A lot of things. It’s clear that it’s not easy, and I think that’s probably the most difficult part because a player that is injured at the end, what can you do? He has no value, he cannot perform, so it’s a really difficult scenario. On top of that, you have to add somebody else on, so it’s not easy.
On discussing internally the balance between buying now and the summer…
Yeah, for sure. We never plan a window. We have a plan, we look at the squad, how we’re going to evolve it, what is in the academy, how we’re going to change it and adapt things. And from there, then you go. Because from what you plan, actually, and the picture that we have today [either] we are really bad at planning or nobody could see that we were going to have that many injuries. So you’re going to have to adapt whatever the plan is as well.
On whether the January window is as simple as having the money to spend…
I don’t think so. Obviously, it’s a factor, because at the end, when you want to recruit a player and the player wants to come, you have to agree to a certain fee. But that player has to be available. It [has to be] a player that we believe can be the solution, short and medium and long term. And we have to be able to afford it. It’s not easy.
On January signings needinb to hit the ground running and whether that’s a factor in recruitment…
For sure. With every player, you have to understand the context as well. So which player do you bring? What are the expectations? How is this player going to fit in on that door when everybody’s asking, OK, we need to sign that kind of player? And then how do you deal with that? That’s always a big thing.
On Kai Havertz’s morale at the moment…
It’s a joy to work with him, honestly. I wish that you could spend some time with him and the players around him and the people around him. That’s why we all love him. Because he just looks forward, he takes it in the chin, he works harder, and he tries again. [For] him and anybody else, in football, what you’ve done today or three weeks ago, it doesn’t matter. It’s about, OK, now against Aston Villa, what we can produce. We’re going to be judges on that, that’s it. So let’s look forward to that.

Yeah, yeah, he needs to. He’s obligated to go. Yes. With his girlfriend, with his family, that he can choose, on his own, but he needs to get away for a few days and refresh. He can still do a lot of things on the rehab because it’s the perfect stage right now, but I think it’s going to make him really good.
On whether he’s keen to stay close to the team at a vital point of the season…
Yeah, but he is and he’s been every single day there. But there is a moment, especially when we plan and we’re going to be away for a few days, that he needs to do that. That’s very important for him as well and we need to look after our players.

Burt Reynolds might never have achieved the dramatic prowess of Marlon Brando or the industry influence of Clint Eastwood, but he was an undisputed star in his heyday, balancing rugged masculinity with self-aware humour. Movies like Smokey and the Bandit made him an icon of the 1970s, while his breakout role in John Boorman’s Deliverance proved that he could do more than project charisma.
Reynolds secured his start as an actor after an injury forced him to stop playing college football. He knocked around on television for a while, playing cops and hunky blacksmiths before he bridged the gap to movies. He hit the peak of his career in the late 1970s and early ‘80s, playing hyper-masculine characters in movies like Semi-Tough and Cannonball Run. He rarely appeared in critically acclaimed movies, but it didn’t matter; he was one of the most popular stars in America.
By the late ‘80s, however, Reynolds’ career was faltering. His characters were becoming more and more repetitive, and he was in danger of becoming a parody of himself. During this period, he made a string of box office bombs, including one which involved his worst experience with a female co-star.
The film was 1988’s Switching Channels, a remake of the 1928 play (and 1931 film) The Front Page, which was also adapted into the classic 1940 romantic comedy His Girl Friday. Reynolds stars as the director of a cable network whose ex-wife, played by Kathleen Turner, is his star news anchor. They spar constantly, but ultimately, of course, fall madly back in love. Unfortunately, things were not so romantic off-screen. In a 2018 interview with The Palm Springs Desert Sun, Reynolds identified the film as one of his biggest professional mistakes, pointing directly to Turner as the cause.
“That was the only leading lady I couldn’t get along with at all,” he confessed. “She had this thing about me and she was probably right. I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. But, at least I was trying to be nice to everybody.”
When the interviewer asked whether he was talking about Turner, Reynolds simply replied, “Yep.” He may as well have said, “Next question” while he was at it.
This is a fairly diplomatic description of an unpleasant on-set experience, especially considering that Reynolds was not the only one who found Turner to be a challenging co-star. Although she was one of the most prominent actors in the ‘80s with movies like Romancing the Stone, Body Heat, and Peggy Sue Got Married, she frequently clashed with other actors and suffered a sharp career decline.
For her part, Turner was equally unimpressed with Reynolds and once said that he was responsible for the worst on-screen kiss of her career. In a 2018 interview with Vanity Fair, she gave her side of the feud.
“Working with Burt Reynolds was terrible,” she said, revealing that he made her cry on the very first day of shooting. “He said something about not taking second place to a woman,” she continued. “His behaviour was shocking. It never occurred to me that I wasn’t someone’s equal.”
Needless to say, they never worked together again.

We caught each other’s eye for an instant, and it was such complicity. We felt so familiar to each other.

The most exotic task I ever took on was playing a corporate lawyer in Michael Clayton. Playing a 400-year-old immortal was easy, but a New York lawyer—that was a stretch.

I am resilient: I can lick my paws and look after myself. And looking after myself is very important to me. But I am a cat who likes being surrounded by dogs.

Oh, god—I love it. I often don’t know what planet I’m on. But it’s not so bad waking up and not knowing where you are! What day is it? What country? What language? It’s a great luxury, and I’m very grateful for it.
Are you superstitious?
In a way. I like counting things in sevens. If I need something, it’s going to be seven. I probably won’t need seven, but it’s where I naturally go. I don’t know if seven is my lucky number. It’s just my setting.
What movie makes you cry?
A Matter of Life and Death, with David Niven and Kim Hunter. It’s the one where she talks to him over the radio when he’s crash-landing in the first scene. Also, Ring of Bright Water. It’s based on this classic book by the great Gavin Maxwell, a travel writer who went to a very remote cottage on the west coast of Scotland, [in a place called] Sandaig, and lived with wild otters. Disney made a film of it in the ’60s. They Disney-fied it a bit. It’s sublime and unbelievably, tragically sad. If you are going to make a children’s film and make people fall in love with an otter, you can imagine what happens at the end. You weep uncontrollably, as you should.
