  • Candice Storey Lee believes Vanderbilt’s new facility will make “journey” to success worth it

Nashville–This time last year Vanderbilt had a different feel about it, so did the feeling around the job that Vanderbilt Athletic Director Candice Storey Lee was doing.

At that point Vanderbilt was coming off of a 2-10 football season in which it lost every conference game by 15 points or more and was in the midst of a men’s basketball season that would ultimately end with less than 10 wins and a “mutual parting of ways” between the program and then head coach Jerry Stackhouse.

A year later the department’s 2024 rèsumè includes a bowl-eligible season, a football win over No. 1 Alabama, a 15-4 start in men’s basketball and a basketball win over No. 6 Tennessee. It’s also bolstered the overall health of its men’s and women’s basketball programs with the completion of a “state of the art” practice facility.

That facility took years of construction, as have Vanderbilt’s programs. Storey Lee believes each step of the build came as a lesson.

“We’ve been on a journey for awhile,” Storey Lee said on Friday. “Last year was a great opportunity to grow and to learn. There’s no parts that have been easy. Even the most challenging times have been rewarding. I didn’t sign up for easy. I do feel that we have and we are moving in the direction to have everything that we need to compete at the highest level.”

A year ago today a statement like that would’ve been laughed off as a spin job from Vanderbilt’s higher ups. Like ‘of course she has to say that’, right?

Now it feels as if Storey Lee has evidence to back up her claim. She believes she got to that point as a result of what her department experienced a year ago.

“You can’t get to this year without last year,” Storey Lee said. “There’s no regrets. It’s just continuous learning.”

The learning curve for Vanderbilt has historically come slowly in regards to its facilities, but its multi-year process is finally complete. As Vanderbilt’s coaches, which Storey Lee says are the “right” ones, look around at what’s been built next to Memorial Gymnasium believe the process was worth it.

“I think it’s the best facility in the country,” Vanderbilt women’s basketball coach Shea Ralph said. “This gives us the opportunity to go out and recruit the best student athletes in the country.”

Sustainability in recruiting–and results for that matter–has often been hard to come by around these parts. Ralph’s program hadn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2014 before making it as a first-four team last season and Byington’s hasn’t made it since the 2016-2017 season.

The hope around Vanderbilt’s newly-built Huber Center is that it could impact winning for an extended period of time. That comes with the reality that facilities have had to take on a different role in the current landscape of college athletics. They’re still valuable, but Byington–like many others–has shifted his mindset elsewhere.

“If you said what’ No. 1 and what’s No.2? NIL is No. 1,” Byington said. “You need everything, if you’ve got top-notch facilities already then you pour into NIL. We were just lacking in a training facility.”

The days of Byington and Ralph’s teams having to practice in an unbearably warm gym in the summertime, the AC in Byington’s offense going out and the teams having to plan their practice schedules around each other are over. That doesn’t mean things are neccessarily holly and jolly on West End.

It does mean that Vanderbilt has caught up in some ways, though. At the very least it sends a message.

“I just think the signal that it sends is so important,” Storey Lee said. “It can be hard to quantify, but the signaling and the credibility that come with showing you have made an investment [are important] that backs up [what you’re saying]. You can have the aspirations, but you have to have the resources that support the aspirations and I think this clearly signals that.”

Vanderbilt University’s new state-of-the-art athletic facility is a game-changer for the school’s sports programs, and Vice Chancellor for Athletics and University Affairs Candice Storey Lee believes it will make the journey to success all the more worth it.

In a recent interview, Lee expressed her excitement about the new facility, which includes a football operations center, a basketball practice facility, and a sports science center. She believes that the investment in these facilities will not only benefit current student-athletes but also attract top talent to Vanderbilt in the future.

Lee emphasized the importance of creating an environment where student-athletes can excel both on and off the field. She believes that the new facility will provide the resources and support necessary for athletes to reach their full potential and achieve success in their respective sports.

Overall, Lee is confident that the new facility will elevate Vanderbilt’s athletic programs to new heights and make the journey to success all the more rewarding for student-athletes, coaches, and fans alike.

  • Tim Weah proving his worth, wherever Juventus play him

    By Graham Ruthven

Tim Weah’s name carries a lot of weight in Italian football. His father, George Weah, was an AC Milan icon and one of the best to ever play in Serie A. When Tim joined Juventus in the summer of 2023, the Italian press couldn’t help themselves from comparing father and son, calling it “Una Storia di Famiglia” on the front page of one newspaper.

Those comparisons don’t do Tim any favours. To this day, his father is the only African player to have ever won the Ballon d’Or. George Weah is still spoken about as one of the greatest players to have worn the famous rossoneri. This, however, shouldn’t diminish Tim’s growing role in black and white.

Against his father’s former club last weekend, Weah made a profound impact, scoring in a 2-0 win for Juventus over AC Milan. His directness and speed in behind the opposition defence gave Juve an extra attacking dimension and was key to the Old Lady recording a potentially season-changing result.

Juve’s 2024/25 campaign has been a paradox. While Thiago Motta’s side are still unbeaten in Serie A, they are 13 points off the pace being set by Napoli at the top of the table. They have drawn an astonishing 13 of the 21 matches they have played this season as Motta has struggled to mould Juventus in his own image.

The 2-0 win over AC Milan was the culmination of a process many have questioned since Motta’s arrival in Turin last summer. Juve controlled the majority of the match. They stopped the Rossoneri from posing any sort of meaningful threat on the break, but were lacking dynamism in the final third until Weah’s introduction at half time.

Few believe Weah will ever be a central pillar of Motta’s team. Those roles belong to the likes of Manuel Locatelli, Teun Koopmeiners and Gleison Bremer with Khéphren Thuram and Andrea Cambiasso also players who have clearly earned the trust of the manager. Weah ranks only 13th among his Juve teammates for minutes played in the league this season.

Nonetheless, Weah has proven his value as a do-everything attacking versatility man on more than one occasion this season. He’s played on the right wing, like he did in the second half against AC Milan. He’s also played on the left wing. The 24-year-old has even filled in as a centre forward when Dušan Vlahović missed a couple matches through injury.

When Weah arrived at the Allianz Stadium from Lille, he was widely seen as a wing back. That was the role many envisaged he would play for Max Allegri who favours a back three. Indeed, the majority of Weah’s 1,249 minutes in Serie A last season came as the fifth member of the Juventus defensive line.

Now, there is a sense that Weah has been liberated. Motta clearly sees the USA international as an outright attacker and has used Weah to keep Juve’s season moving forward when it easily could have veered off course. He might not be a central pillar of Motta’s team, but he is certainly a load-bearing one.

Of course, Weah isn’t the only American to have earned his place at Juventus this season. Weston McKennie is another US men’s national team member whose versatility has been tested with the 26-year-old – a midfielder by trade – deployed at right back in the recent win over AC Milan. This came after a run of games at left back. He has played over the pitch for the Old Lady.

McKennie, like Weah, has faced questions over his future as a Juventus player. The pair, however, have won over their doubters even if recent speculation has linked Everton with a January move for Weah. Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig are also believed to be interested in the winger who Juve could entertain offers for due to their fragile financial position.

This season will be remembered as a transitional one for Juventus. The Turin club have backed Motta to reshape the squad after years of stagnation under Allegri and have recognised that progress will be slow and painful. Money has been spent in the transfer window and further squad reconstruction will happen over the next few windows.

Weah might ultimately find himself a victim of that rebuild if Juventus receive a satisfactory offer for him, but the American has played an important role in the resurgence of one of Italy’s biggest clubs. There might well be more moments like the one delivered by Weah against AC Milan last weekend. He might not be his father, but Tim is making a name for himself in Turin.

Tim Weah is showing his worth no matter where Juventus puts him on the field. Since joining the club in 2019, Weah has consistently impressed fans and critics alike with his skill, versatility, and determination.

Whether he’s playing as a winger, striker, or attacking midfielder, Weah always gives his all and makes a significant impact on the game. His pace, dribbling ability, and eye for goal have made him a valuable asset to the team.

Despite facing stiff competition for playing time at a club like Juventus, Weah has managed to carve out a space for himself in the starting lineup and has proven that he belongs at the highest level of football.

With each game, Weah continues to show why he is considered one of the most exciting young talents in the game. His performances on the field speak for themselves, and it’s clear that he has a bright future ahead of him at Juventus and beyond.

  • FC Barcelona’s Champions League Comeback Worth More Than $50 Million

FC Barcelona’s heroic comeback win over Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday could end up being worth over $50 million to the club as explained by official UEFA prize money figures and AS.

It looked as though it wasn’t meant to be the Catalans’ night in the Estadio da Luz, as they trailed the Lisbon giants by a two-goal margin twice.

At 4-2 down, however, Robert Lewandowski converted his second penalty ahead of Pedri setting up Eric Garcia for a headed equalizer.

Deep into injury time, MVP Raphinha, who later said he will “kill and die” for the team, thundered down the pitch to latch onto a Ferran Torres clearance, and fooled Anatoliy Trubin to take home all three points by completing his brace and netting an eighth goal in seven UCL appearances this term.

Hansi Flick confessed that he didn’t believe he’d lived a comeback like it. And while such a remontada works wonders for morale as Barca heads into the business end of the season, it also helps line the club’s coffers at a time when it needs all the money it can get while still recovering from a financial crisis that threatened to close the doors to the Camp Nou completely at the turn of the decade.

As AS helps explain, the victory worth roughly $2.2 million (or exactly €2.1 million) means that Barca has pocked $13.1 million (€12.6 million) for the six of them it has achieved in the UCL league phase thus far, while taking scalps such as that of Flick’s former club Bayern Munich.

We can then add this amount to the $19.4 million (€18.6 million) for participation and the $11.5 million (€11 million) which beating Benfica brought in for simultaneously reaching the last 16.

That makes a total of around $43 million (€41.2 million) in the pot, but that could soon become $55.6 million (€53.3 million) by finishing in first in the league phase if Liverpool slips up, and also beating Europa League holders Atalanta next week on the last matchday of the preliminary phase.

In short, the Benfica epic kept Barca in line for what is potentially an even bigger payday.

FC Barcelona’s incredible comeback in the Champions League has not only secured their spot in the next round of the competition, but it is also estimated to be worth more than $50 million for the club.

In their round of 16 second leg match against Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona pulled off a stunning 6-1 victory to overturn a 4-0 deficit from the first leg. This remarkable performance not only made history as the greatest comeback in Champions League history, but it also earned the club a spot in the quarter-finals.

The financial implications of this victory are significant for Barcelona. Advancing to the quarter-finals means that the club will receive a share of the prize money distribution from UEFA. In addition, the increased exposure and TV revenue from progressing in the tournament will also bring in substantial revenue for the club.

Furthermore, the victory has boosted the morale and confidence of the team and the fans, which can translate into increased ticket sales, merchandise revenue, and sponsorship opportunities.

Overall, Barcelona’s Champions League comeback is not just a sporting achievement, but also a financial windfall that can help the club strengthen its position both on and off the pitch.

  • Flau’jae Johnson’s mom Kia Brooks drops 4-word reaction to $450 million worth Kevin Hart’s monologue

Flau’jae Johnson’s mother Kia Brooks tends to be very active on social media. One of her latest interactions involved a video featuring celebrity Kevin Hart, one of the richest people in the United States with a net worth of $450 million, per Celebrity Net Worth.

Brooks reacted to a video posted to Instagram last December, which had Hart explain why he surrounds himself with people who are winners. He claims they helped him grow and become more ambitious in his ideas, allowing him to take his craft more seriously over time.

She reacted to the video with a story post that summed up her reaction to what Hart said in four words.

“It’s just that simple!!” Brooks said.

Flau’jae Johnson revealed her favorite NFL team

Flau’jae Johnson is paying more attention to the NFL when she’s on her days off from LSU women’s basketball.

Johnson gave an explanation about her current favorite NFL team, which is none as she tried being a supporter of the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints over the past couple of seasons. She explained as much in an Instagram reel from the “Best of Both Worlds with Flau’jae Johnson” podcast.

“Y’all, I have a curse. Last year, I didn’t have an NFL team. Falcons, they just embarrassed me every year, I’m done with that. So I’m like, I’m gonna be a Saints fan bro. As soon as I turned into a Saints fan, they started losing,” Johnson said.

“You know me, I’m a bandwagon. I’m about to go. I hop on the Eagles. As soon as I joined the Eagles, bro, they started losing. I’m talking about, you remember, they lost all them games back to back to back? That was me.”

Johnson has performed at a high level for the LSU Tigers this season. After 20 games, she is averaging 19.9 points, six rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.3 steals per game. She boasts shooting splits of 49.2% shooting from the field and 37.1% from beyond the arc.

Following Friday’s matchup with the No. 2 South Gamecocks, the No. 5 Tigers will return home to host the Texas A&M Aggies at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. ET.
