  • Meet The First-Time GRAMMY Nominee: RAYE On Her Long Road To Stardom, Writing Songs With Beyoncé & Her “Really Beautiful” Bond With Charli XCX

The 2025 GRAMMYs, officially known as the 67th GRAMMY Awards, will air live on CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday, Feb. 2. Watch highlights from the 2025 GRAMMYs on live.GRAMMY.com.

The 2025 GRAMMYs telecast will be reimagined to raise funds to support wildfire relief efforts and aid music professionals impacted by the wildfires in Los Angeles. Donate to the Recording Academy’s and MusiCares’ Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort To Support Music Professionals.

Editor’s Note: This interview was conducted before the onset of the wildfires in Los Angeles. The artist has since addressed the situation, telling GRAMMY.com, “My thoughts are with all those in Los Angeles affected by this heartbreaking and devastating tragedy. My heart goes out deeply to the working class communities impacted by these fires.”

In June 2021, RAYE made a declaration to herself and the world: “I’m done being a polite pop star. I want to make my album now.”

The message — one of several emotional, end-of-her-rope tweets the South London native shared on Twitter (now X) — was the result of years filled with heartbreak and compromise in her career as a singer/songwriter. Fortuitously, her sentiments of pent-up frustration went viral, giving her exactly the type of crucial (and public) leverage she needed to get out of her major-label recording contract, go independent, and make the album she was dying to make.

The result, 2023’s My 21st Century Blues, wasn’t just the debut album RAYE (born Rachel Keen) had always envisioned; it’s also the album that shot her to stardom, and helped earn the artist her first GRAMMY nominations in the process. RAYE’s GRAMMY nods — for Best New Artist, Songwriter Of The Year, Non-Classical, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical (for her contribution to Lucky Daye‘s Algorithm) — are just the latest in a long list of accomplishments and accolades she’s added to her resume in the last two years.

Just weeks before the album’s release, her woozy, snarling single with 070 Shake, “Escapism.,” exploded in popularity on TikTok and pioneered the trend of sped-up audio that soon proliferated on the platform; the track landed the songstress both her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and a No. 1 hit in her native U.K. Cut to almost exactly one year later, and she’d become the most-awarded artist in a single night at the 2024 BRITs, winning British Artist of the Year, British Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best R&B Act, and Songwriter of the Year.

    Loading…

Long before she rocketed to fame as an artist, RAYE had spent the better part of a decade establishing herself as one of the most ferociously hard-working and in-demand songwriters in the industry. Now 27, she actually started working as a professional songwriter at just 14 years old, signing her first publishing deal at 16.

In the decade that followed, the British star racked up songwriting credits for Beyoncé, Little Mix, Ellie Goulding, Rita Ora, Quavo, Anitta, Hailee Steinfeld, John Legend, Mabel and several other big-name artists. She had also signed a four-album deal with Polydor Records at 17, but while her career as a songwriter blossomed, her goal to be a solo artist in her own right was met by obstacle after obstacle.

Upon entering the industry, RAYE had envisioned herself as an R&B artist in the vein of “The Weeknd and PARTYNEXTDOOR mixed with Jill Scott“; instead, label executives pushed her toward the dance-centric sound dominating radio at the time. She ultimately released three EPs as part of her contract — 2016’s Second, 2018’s Side Tape and 2020’s Euphoric Sad Songs — but none of those projects were musically or creatively in line with the full-length album she was being held back from making.

“I had zero creative control,” RAYE recalls. “I blinked, and I’d turned into something I didn’t recognize. I was honestly really heartbroken and had gone against everything I said I’d never compromise. I just felt like a puppet, and I was for a long time.”

Only by breaking free of her contract was RAYE able to cut the puppet strings, rediscover her voice and make the music she’d held inside for so many years.

My 21st Century Blues unfurls RAYE’s story with unflinching honesty, as evidenced on visceral album cut “Hard Out Here.”: “After years and fears and smiling through my tears/ All I ask of you is open your ears/ ‘Cause the truth ain’t pretty, my dear.” She combines R&B melodies, hip-hop beats and pop balladry with shades of dancehall and retro jazz, crafting a sound that’s uniquely hers — and delivered entirely on her own terms.

Ahead of the 2025 GRAMMYs, RAYE chatted with GRAMMY.com about her long-awaited solo success, writing songs with superstars like Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez, why she’s rooting for longtime pal Charli XCX to win, and more.

What do you remember feeling when you found out you were a GRAMMY nominee?

On that particular day, I was just really in my head and worried about the future. I was speaking to my mum on the phone, like, “Mum, like, what if this is it?” You know, I was just going through it. [Laughs.] And then someone on my team was like, “We should put the GRAMMY nominations on the telly!” And I was like, “Please, not today. I’ll just check Twitter when they come out.”

I had zero expectations. The first one they announced was Songwriter Of The Year, Non-Classical, they said my name! And then I lost it. Started screaming, started crying. I was shocked. My mind was blown. And then they [announced] Best New Artist and I nearly threw up. It was just, like, “What the f— is happening right now?” It was just the most ridiculously overwhelming and beautiful surprise.

Now that you’ve had some time to process, what do your GRAMMY nominations mean to you?

When you first reckon with the idea of dedicating your life to being a musician, one of the first things you picture is that beautiful golden gramophone with your name engraved in gold on the front. I think for all of us musicians, that’s the dream — a very huge, wild, massive dream. Even being recognized and nominated is the most overwhelming sense of feeling seen as a musician by fellow creatives, fellow writers, it’s a real affirmation. It makes me emotional. It’s just it

I still can’t really believe that we’ve even made it this far. Just, like, this is nuts. This is f—ing real. It’s a whole mind game, as well, to wrap your head around that being a reality. It really is insane.

You’ve obviously gained so many new fans throughout this process. If there was one song on My 21st Century Blues that you could point new listeners to, what would it be?

Hmm…obviously it depends on taste, ’cause there’s a lot of different styles on there. Like, songs like “Body Dysmorphia.” and “Environmental Anxiety.” are quite heavy topics. You know, it gives me anxiety listening to “Environmental Anxiety.,” so… [Laughs.

“Body Dysmorphia.” is a little bit more simple and a little bit more relaxed — not in terms of the lyricism, but musically. I feel like maybe there’s some people out there who would really relate to those songs. Oh, and “The Thrill Is Gone.” I’ve sang that everywhere. I open the show with “Thrill Is Gone.” I’m like, “You WILL listen to this song!”

Your ability to reinterpret your songs and create different versions of them from what’s on the album — whether it’s for your live album My 21st Century Symphony. at Royal Albert Hall, “Saturday Night Live,” or any given award show — is so impressive. Is that process something that you have in mind when you’re writing and recording in the studio?

It’s really important to me as a performer; I want it to be fresh and exciting. And also ’cause we live in a world where everything’s documented and filmed, if you do something one way, people will know it. And I love that element of change and surprise. Even in the writing process, I would take a song and be like, “Let’s try it in four different genres and see which one feels the best.”

It’s an exciting thing when you’re creating a live show to be like, “Let’s reimagine this in this way now.” Because why not? There’s no rules and it’s fun. And sometimes you can think, What if people just want to hear it how the record is? But then you go and listen to the album to hear it how the record is!

I remember going to a Jill Scott concert at the Apollo where she played every single song entirely differently. I was so blown away and completely didn’t expect it. I really took a leaf from that. I was really inspired and so moved.

In my head there are moments where you want to hear something similarly [to the studio version], but that can be bent here and it can move there, and we can extend this intro and we can do this. It also, as a musician, keeps me stimulated and excited. You don’t wanna be doing the same thing over and over — you’ve got to reinvent it and push the wheel and give something new. Anytime any of my hardcore supporters [come to a show], I want them to be like, “Oh s—! There’s a different version, this is so exciting!”

You’re the first artist in GRAMMY history to be nominated simultaneously for Best New Artist and Songwriter Of The Year, Non Classical. What does it mean to you to be recognized for your songwriting alongside your artistry?

That one really hit deep. I mean, I identified first as a songwriter. Before I was ever an artist, that was always who I was even when I didn’t have any cuts. It was the first goal and the first dream. And I also dedicated so much heart and so much of my life to wanting to be one — to learn how to be a better one, to soak in more, to study the greats. I’m so passionate about the craft.

It’s like crack cocaine to me, even though I don’t know what crack cocaine feels like. But I imagine it’s pretty amazing. And that’s what it feels like to me, you know, that combination of the correct melody or that lyric that just cuts you, that evokes those emotions, is completely an art form I’m obsessed with.

So to be recognized by my peers and my fellow songwriters is just such a ridiculous honor and something that young RAYE would be like, “Holy f—ing s—. LOOK! You’ve actually gone and made waves as a songwriter!”

I remember being 16 and being like, “I’m gonna do this until I’m respected in this craft.” And what an absolute pinnacle, physical example of that, in that nomination, for me.

One thing that really stands out in your songwriting catalog is how incredibly dextrous you are at writing across genres and moods and personalities and inspirations. Is there a guiding principle that you follow to write for all these different artists and styles of music?

That’s a good question. I think because of how seriously devoted I was to the craft of songwriting at such a young age, that I realized it was so important for me to want to learn all the different skills. I spent a lot of time in Sweden as a kid and these guys are some of the best in the world at writing pop songs. We all know Max Martin and his camp, and there are so many ridiculously incredible songwriters [there] who continue to hit the mark again and again across spans of tens and twenties of years.

Learning from those guys was invaluable to understanding what makes a hook, what makes something stick, what makes a really great pop song. So that’s a craft that never came natural to me, but something that I studied.

And then the other aspect of it: I grew up in a church environment where it was all very free-flowing gospel — it’s a form of freestyle, worship. So it’s this element of just embracing melody and letting it just come out.

Then between those two worlds, when I was 14, I went on a road trip around America with my dad and my uncle. Before that trip, I didn’t understand country music. I was never exposed to it, you know?

I was sat in the car for hours, listening and soaking it in and understanding how beautiful and powerful country music was. It had this down-to-earth, poetic, beautiful [quality of] “I’m gonna tell you a story: She was in a blue dress. The sky was gray. He sipped his whiskey on a cold winter’s day.” So my mind was opened.

Then we went to New Orleans — that was my favorite place. It was all jazz. And we went to a place called The Conservation Jazz Hall and I sat on the floor, ’cause the room was full, and I was directly under the trombone, And it was spit blowing in my face and everything, and I loved it! I was like, “This is incredible!”

So I think it comes from a deep-rooted love of music — wanting to understand what each genre consists of, feels like, what instruments are going into it. How are these guys writing this? Why is it like that? Why are the lyrics still like this?

When I go into a room and someone’s like, “Let’s do a rock ballad,” I’m like, “OK, let’s dig into this.” So I’ll go away, I’ll do my research, I’ll listen to things in that genre, I’ll try to understand what that took, studying the greats and then being like, “OK, let’s get into this.” I could talk passionately about this for hours because this s— absolutely turns me on, to be honest.

Speaking of country music, what can you tell me about writing “RIIVERDANCE” with Beyoncé for COWBOY CARTER?

Probably not much! [Laughs.] But I can say, what an honor. The way the song originally started was very different to how it turned out. So it was a whole evolution.

Look, I had one cut with Miss Queen Bey before [“Bigger” from 2019’s The Lion King: The Gift], and I was like, “Holy f—ing s—,” you know what I mean? And then this time, you’re like, “F—ing hell.” There’s only curse words I can really say to express how that feels.

A lot of fans may not realize that you actually worked with Charli XCX years ago on what was supposed to be XCX World in 2016 and then again on Number 1 Angel in 2017. Given your history together, what’s it been like seeing her blow up alongside you this past year with brat?

Listen, I am so proud of that woman. I met Charli when I was maybe 18. And before I met her, the experience and the environment that I was in was around a lot of men who were, on a daily basis, telling me that I needed to be threatened by all these other women [in the industry]. And that, as a kid, can really do something to you and really skew and confuse you.

And Charli completely broke that lie. She actually directed a video for me called “I, U, Us.” It was a really long time ago, but the video was great — it was on an ice rink. And I got to share creative space with her writing on many different occasions as a young writer, and she’s just absolutely brilliant. She is a true artist. She is a true songwriter.

She’s actually one of the artists who inspired me to be a writer as well as an artist; it was examples like Charli and Emeli Sandé when I was in those pivotal early years, that I was like, “I can really do this, ’cause they’re doing it.” Which is crazy, ’cause Charli literally looks the same age as me, if not younger. My girl!

Anyway, it was just really, really invaluable what she poured into me. And then I had one of my first really big cuts with her, which was [2016’s] “After The Afterparty,” so she was a really beautiful part of my early career.

On top of that, we always related to each other. Because it was a hardship for her as well. Like, my girl went through it. And we would always talk and have real, down-to-earth, deep conversations about the struggles and the things we’d be going through. So it is just so beautiful to see her get her just. I couldn’t speak higher of her. I’m so happy for her, bursting with pride. And I hope she cleans up!

You’ve also written with lots of other amazing women this year like Jennifer Lopez, Halle Bailey, Kylie Minogue and Rita Ora. Do you have favorite memories from any of those sessions?

Working with Halle was an absolute dream. That girl — first of all, we giggled like little frickin’ children. We had a great time, we clicked instantly. And we made some beautiful songs I’m really excited for the world to hear. She’s such a rare, beautiful soul. Such an incredible voice, such a brilliant talent. So I have some really dear and beautiful memories writing with her.

And J.Lo, it’s like, “F—ing hell, it’s J.Lo!” So I was just telling myself, Just write! Just make something great!

It’s always quite funny being in spaces with people you’ve grown up watching on telly, do you know I mean? So I try to play it cool — I’m pretty good at playing it cool, I think. But then after the moment, you’re like, “Umm…holy s—.” [Laughs.

Needless to say, it’s been such a huge year for you. What’s next?

Well, I want to write another album. So I want to begin that. I think it’s important that I go into writing mode. I’m so all or nothing, so if I’m on the road, I’m on the road doing shows, and I’m all over the live arrangements. My head is in what we’re doing, I can’t pull out to write. So there has to be designated time for that.

I have a couple exciting other things that I’m part of musically, that I can’t really digress much into. It’s a year of creation. And hopefully it won’t take me… well, it might take loads of time. I don’t know how long it’s gonna take to write some good music, do you know what I mean? It’s been a minute since I’ve been in the lab, so we’ll see how it goes.

  • Jesse Eisenberg on ‘A Real Pain,’ Acting vs. Writing and Mark Zuckerberg 2.0

    Generate Key Takeaways

Jesse Eisenberg is the guest on the latest episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. The 41-year-old actor, writer and director is best known for his portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s 2010 masterpiece The Social Network. Fourteen years after receiving an best actor Oscar nomination for that performance, the former child actor is an Oscar nominee again, this time for the original screenplay that he wrote for a 2024 film that he also directed and stars in, A Real Pain.

The semi-autobiographical drama is about two very different cousins — one “successful” but anxious, played by him, the other struggling but charming, played by Kieran Culkin — who travel together to Poland to pay tribute to their beloved late grandmother. It premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where Eisenberg was recognized with the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, and at which its U.S. distribution rights were acquired for $10 million by Searchlight, which released it on Nov. 1, 2024. It has since garnered rave reviews — it’s at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes — and has grossed $16.4 million worldwide.

    More from The Hollywood Reporter

Over the course of a conversation at the Los Angeles offices of The Hollywood Reporter, Eisenberg reflected on how a shy and socially-awkward kid wound up on the stage and the screen in the first place, in films such as 2002’s Roger Dodger, 2005’s The Squid and the Whale and 2009’s Adventureland; what led him to begin writing, even as his acting career took off thanks to the commercial success of 2009’s Zombieland and 2010’s The Social Network, and why he shifted from penning scripts in the mold of Adam Sandler comedies to more personal material; how A Real Pain — the second feature that he wrote and directed, after 2022’s When You Finish Saving the World — essentially brings together ideas he first explored in other pieces that he wrote years ago; plus much more.

In a recent interview, Jesse Eisenberg opened up about the challenges of playing complex characters, the difference between acting and writing, and his thoughts on the evolution of Mark Zuckerberg in the upcoming film “The Social Network 2.0.”

Eisenberg, known for his intense and nuanced performances, described the process of getting into character as “a real pain.” He explained that he often immerses himself in the mindset of his characters, which can be emotionally draining. However, he also expressed a deep love for the craft of acting and the opportunity to inhabit different personas on screen.

When asked about his experience as a writer, Eisenberg emphasized the distinct challenges that come with writing compared to acting. He noted that while both require creativity and storytelling skills, writing often involves more solitary work and a different kind of discipline. Despite these differences, Eisenberg revealed that he enjoys both pursuits and finds fulfillment in expressing himself through multiple artistic mediums.

One of Eisenberg’s most famous roles was portraying Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the original “The Social Network” film. Now, with a sequel in the works, Eisenberg shared his excitement for revisiting the character and exploring how Zuckerberg has evolved over the years. He hinted at a more mature and introspective portrayal of the tech mogul, suggesting that audiences can expect to see a new side of Zuckerberg in the upcoming film.

Overall, Eisenberg’s reflections on acting, writing, and his upcoming projects offer insight into his passion for storytelling and his dedication to his craft. Fans can look forward to seeing him tackle new challenges and bring fresh perspectives to the characters he embodies on screen.

I previously tried to use an entry-level Wacom pen tablet years ago and never enjoyed it. I'm sure most of that was on my lack of experience, but some of it can be chalked up to the small drawing area and the fact I never enjoyed how Illustrator handled brushes. In the end, if was always better to just use a mouse.

The rise in free (or inexpensive) painting apps lately inspired me to get another pen tablet and try again. Wacom's products were too expensive for something I might not enjoy, but research led me to the Inspiroy 2. For a much cheaper price I got a larger drawing area and a solid tablet with (a) more buttons and (b) a scroll wheel.

The value is terrific, but how does it perform? Terrific! I was able to buy extra nibs for $10 that are made of felt, so they give more friction on the tablet (I don't remember my Wacom pen allowing that). The pressure sensitivity seems to work just fine though I have little to compare it too, and overall my experience has been well worth my purchase. If you are looking for a beginner tablet, absolutely start here and bump up to something elite as your talent grows. I also feel that drawing apps have come a long way. Adobe Fresco's brush engine, for example, is far better than anything Illustrator has and the vector brushes in Fresco are fantastic.

My only complaints come from a few quirks with the Huion app that is used to specify the actions for each button. I'm left-handed so I work with this turned upside down. The Huion app lets you turn it 90 or 180 degrees to accommodate your needs. That all works fine. What could be better, though, is that when you tell the app you are working with it turned 180 degrees, picture of the tablet in the app doesn't also turn 180 degrees. So, I have to specify the functions of each button while trying to figure where it will be once the tablet is spun around. That's a simple change they can make in software — and I hope they do. I also found that a change to the button functions is not immediately represented when using UWP apps, like Adobe Fresco. Sometimes, I have to restart the Huion app or unplug and re-plug in the tablet.

Those are small issues overall and do not kill the experience.

This tablet is just too cute. I love how everything besides the tablet is also pink. Even the pen nibs are pink! And they are the best shades of pink!

IlThe tablet works well and is compatible with photoshop. The feels when drawing on it are smooth and comfortable. I don't mind that it is small. I think it's only the matter of getting used to it. However, I do understand why others might prefer a larger sized tablet. It would've been nice to have this color option, at least in size M. The pen feels so nice in the hand, too. Doesnxt differ much from the wacom intuous pro pen.

This tablet really inspired me to pick up learning drawing again. I am a beginner and this tablet is just right – affordable and does a good job.

My only complaint so far is that some of the buttons all of a sudden becoming stiff and awkward to press. They were fine the first few times I used them.

I owned a more expensive (wacom) tablet, though, and there are things I missed having: bluetooth connection, touch mode, eraser on the other end of the pen, etc. I wish they would have an upgraded version of this sakura pink color with those functions. Well, a girl can dream.

I bought this as a gift for my husband around march and he's been very happy with it. He uses it with his phone and his PC, making his work more streamlined and easier to complete while on the go (although it is a little big for day to day travel imo, it works well for vacations and such).

My review for this tablet is mostly positive. It works great, the size is perfect for smaller laptops and it fits right on top of my keyboard without pressing any keys below. The multi button function is really cool, I have all the shortkeys I could need so I dont have to constantly move my tablet out if the way to reach my keyboard, which is the main reason I wanted this tablet. The line quality is great, no random jitters or disconnecting lines when drawing, and the pen pressure feels nice. The overall build quality is decent, the buttons don't stick and they register every time you press them. It's all plastic and lightweight, but doesn't feel like it's about to fall apart. Its also affordable enough to where I'm not scared to toss it in my laptop bag and take it to a coffee shop like I would with a really expensive tablet.

My only 2 nitpick are the little rubber stoppers on the bottom and the color. The rubber stoppers are too small, I had to go and buy stick-on ones from the store to put on the bottom so the device doesn't slide off my laptop keyboard when I have them both sitting in my lap at an angle.

The other issue is the color. I bought the green one thinking it was going to be more of a jade color, but in reality it's a super dark army green. Like dark to the point where I'm not sure why they bothered giving this tablet a second color, basically black and might-as-well-be-black. I wish they just had the medium come in the sakura pink as well. Not only do I think it looks better but it's easier to see where the shortkeys are when using a lighter tablet, this tablet's so dark that when I glance down to hit the correct button I feel like I'm looking into a black void.

So, a little background. My original tablet, a Huion HS64, was a hand-me-down from my son. At christmas we upgraded him to the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 2.4k. At work I started using it, it was ok, but usability did not seem as intuitive as his new Kamvas. So i went online… did some searching. Reviews were good on this Inspiroy 2s, price point was good. We had been happy with the product and customer service we had recieved with the orginal HS64 purchase. So i ordered it. By no means am I a pro user. I use BluBeam and Adobe Acrobat PDF creators, I play around with Adobe illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and i have tried Krita a few times.

The scroll wheel, why do they make these things without them?!? its great! Before, trying to use the stylus to zoom in and out was tedious at best! The additional two buttom program capacity is nice to have, as well as the spoft touch rubber buttons vs the hard plastic from the HS64. Maybe its just me, but it seems that the stylus tracking on the pad seems more acurate with the Inspiroy vs the hs64. I also did not have to modify the screen area, it was just plug and play. Very easy to use! I guess its possible the program may have cheated as the Huion software was previously installed, but either way it was appreciated.

As you can see in the photo, the difference in size of the Inspiroy 2 at the bottom, the HS64 in the middle, and The Kamvas at the top. The buttons are better located on the side rather than the top, so as a lefty, its easy to use my pinky to access the shortcut keys or the scroll wheel. Its the simple things that make a good product that much better! The gradient stylus works well. However, I found trying to get the lighter gradients a little hard but is quite good otherwise. Feels nice in the hand. Also works good as a mouse! I have a touch screen monitor at work, it did not work on there, oh well. Learned from my son that there are extra stylus tips in the base.

    So i guess pros:
    -Price point and richer? feel
    -Scroll wheel
    -ease of setup
-more intuitive pad to screen stylus tracking
    Cons:
-Lower gradient sensitivity might need some tweaking

Overall, it is a great upgrade to an older product you may have. Works well with a variety of programs and is very user friendly to use and setup.

  • I put GitHub Copilot’s AI to the test – and it just might be terrible at writing code

    ZDNET

The thing I find most baffling about the programming tests I’ve been running is that tools based on the same large language model tend to perform quite differently.

Also: The best AI for coding in 2025 (and what not to use)

For example, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and GitHub Copilot are all based on the GPT-4 model from OpenAI. But, as I’ll show you below, while ChatGPT and Perplexity’s pro plans performed excellently, GitHub Copilot failed as often as it succeeded.

I tested GitHub Copilot embedded inside a VS Code instance. I’ll explain how to set that up and use GitHub Copilot in an upcoming step-by-step article. But first, let’s run through the tests.

If you want to know how I test and the prompts for each individual test, feel free to read how I test an AI chatbot’s coding ability.

TL;DR: GitHub Copilot passed two and failed two.

Test 1: Writing a WordPress Plugin

So, this failed miserably. This was my first test, so I can’t tell yet whether GitHub Copilot is terrible at writing code or whether the context in which one interacts with it is limiting to the point where it can’t meet this requirement.

    Let me explain.

This test involves asking the AI to create a fully functional WordPress plugin, complete with admin interface elements and operational logic. The plugin takes in a set of names, sorts them, and, if there are duplicates, separates the duplicates so they’re not side by side.

Also: I tested DeepSeek’s R1 and V3 coding skills – and we’re not all doomed (yet)

This was a real-world application that my wife needed as part of an involvement device she runs on her very active Facebook group as part of her digital goods e-commerce business.

Most of the other AIs passed this test, at least partly. Five of the 10 AI models tested passed the test completely. Three of them passed part of the test. Two (including Microsoft Copilot) failed completely.

The thing is, I gave GitHub Copilot the same prompt I give all of them, but it only wrote PHP code. To be clear, this problem can be solved solely using PHP code. But some AIs like to include some JavaScript for the interactive features. GitHub Copilot included code for using JavaScript but never actually generated the JavaScript that it tried to use.

    random1

    Screenshot by David Gewirtz/ZDNET

What’s worse, when I created a JavaScript file and, from within the JavaScript file, tried to get GitHub Copilot to run the prompt, it gave me another PHP script, which also referenced a JavaScript file.

As you can see below, within the randomizer.js file, it tried to enqueue (basically to bring in to run) the randomizer.js file, and the code it wrote was PHP, not JavaScript.

    randomjs

    Screenshot by David Gewirtz/ZDNET

Test 2: Rewriting a string function

This test is fairly simple. I wrote a function that was supposed to test for dollars and cents but wound up only testing for integers (dollars). The test asks the AI to fix the code.

GitHub Copilot did rework the code, but there were a bunch of problems with the code it produced.

    • It assumed a string value was always a string value. If it was empty, the code would break.
    • The revised regular expression code would break if a decimal point (i.e., “3.”) was entered, if a leading decimal point (i.e., “.3”) was entered, or if leading zeros were included (i.e., “00.30”).

For something that was supposed to test whether currency was entered correctly, failing with code that would crash on edge cases is not acceptable.

    So, we have another fail.

Test 3: Finding an annoying bug

GitHub Copilot got this right. This is another test pulled from my real-life coding escapades. What made this bug so annoying (and difficult to figure out) is that the error message isn’t directly related to the actual problem.

Also: I put DeepSeek AI’s coding skills to the test – here’s where it fell apart

The bug is kind of the coder equivalent of a trick question. Solving it requires understanding how specific API calls in the WordPress framework work and then applying that knowledge to the bug in question.

Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, and Meta Code Llama all failed this test. But GitHub Copilot solved it correctly.

    Test 4: Writing a script

Here, too, GitHub Copilot succeeded where Microsoft Copilot failed. The challenge here is that I’m testing the AI’s ability to create a script that knows about coding in AppleScript, the Chrome object model, and a little Mac-only third-party coding utility called Keyboard Maestro.

Also: X’s Grok did surprisingly well in my AI coding tests

To pass this test, the AI has to be able to recognize that all three coding environments need attention and then tailor individual lines of code to each of those environments.

    Final thoughts

Given that GitHub Copilot uses GPT-4, I find the fact that it failed half of the tests discouraging. GitHub is just about the most popular source management environment on the planet, and one would hope that the AI coding support was reasonably reliable.

As with all things AI, I’m sure performance will get better. Let’s stay tuned and check back in a few months to see if the AI is more effective at that time.

Do you use an AI to help with coding? What AI do you prefer? Have you tried GitHub Copilot? Let us know in the comments below.

I recently had the opportunity to test out GitHub Copilot, the AI-powered code completion tool that has been making waves in the developer community. As a programmer myself, I was excited to see how this tool could potentially revolutionize the way we write code.

However, after spending some time using Copilot, I have to say that I was left feeling underwhelmed. While the tool certainly has its moments of brilliance, I found that it often struggled to generate code that was actually usable. In many cases, the suggestions it provided were either overly complex, inefficient, or just plain incorrect.

One particular instance that stands out in my mind is when Copilot tried to generate a simple function to sort an array of numbers. Instead of using a standard sorting algorithm like quicksort or mergesort, it came up with a convoluted and nonsensical solution that would have been incredibly slow and inefficient.

Overall, I think that GitHub Copilot has the potential to be a useful tool for developers, but it still has a long way to go before it can be considered truly reliable. In the meantime, I’ll be sticking to writing my code the old-fashioned way.

    Only $26
Got my first tablet when I was 12, a Wacom, was expensive. Then wanted a cintiq, $1000 was too much.. found Huion, got their larger model size a long time ago, then upgraded to a huion 1080+ pro, I still use it at home for larger projects- that was only $300-$400 and the quality and build is amazing.Needed something more lightweight, portable so I saw this and decided to buy it. I also got a MacBook Air I saw on sale, decided to pair these 2 together and it’s great! I use clip studio paint the older version. Beginner, pro, it doesn’t matter, it will get the job done, plug and play easy, download the right driver and you’re golden. The buttons all work and the flow is 10/10 for me.Now that im older I don’t care about name brand stuff, it genuinely relies on you as an artist to use the tools you have in the budget you want. Thank you huion you always gonna be my go to brand for tablets

    Thank you for your feedback

    • Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2017

Okay, I will start off by stating that I am not a professional graphic artist so don't expect an especially artistic bent to this review. I am an avid photographer and have worked in the creative arts my entire career. I love digital photography and the ability to manipulate photos after the fact.

The ability to control light and shadows, exposure, midtones, saturation, etc. and being able to control tiny areas of the photograph are all things that I manipulate in the digital darkroom. In order to really work well with masks and feathering to control the effects it really helps to have a tablet and pen. For years I have been using a Wacom Bamboo tablet and pen. They were great for entry level work and for experimenting to see if a tablet was really going to be the tool of choice for me.

Well, recently, I built a new PC and the software that I use for photography was upgraded. The response of the Wacom tablet and pen had become unpredictable and disappointing. Wacom no longer had new drivers for the Bamboo tablet line that worked well with Windows 10, so I went on Amazon to see what the latest crop of tablets was like. I didn't want to spend a ton of money since I don't make my living doing this. After reviewing several of the tablets there were just a few criteria that were important to me: The size of the tablet, the number of customizable buttons and their layout, and a pen that didn't require a battery or recharging.

I was intrigued by some tablets that were wireless and would allow me to avoid worrying about cords dangling around the keyboard. But after considering how I use my pen and tablet, I realized that I didn't need a wireless version. I had used a Huion tablet before and had been relatively pleased with how it works (it is still at my desk at work where I use it on occasion). But this H640P looked particularly intriguing and the price was certainly appealing.

I hooked it up for the first time today and I can tell that Huion has made great leaps forward in the design and function of their tablets. This one is FANTASTIC for what I need it to do. It is SMOOTH and responsive. I have customized the tablet buttons and layout a few times and think I have it roughly where I want it. Using the pen as a digital brush has become a true joy. Having used Wacoms on Macs at work I can tell you that the response and ease of use on my PC with this new tablet feels just as good. I am so impressed with the ease of use I am looking for additional photos to play with!

The size of the tablet is great and I can shift it on and off of my lap easily. I keep it right near my keyboard and mouse (yes, there are some things I like to do that require a mouse) for easy access. The tablet is very lightweight yet solid. The nib of the pen glides on this surface. The pressure sensitivity of the pen is fully adjustable in the driver software and I couldn't be happier with how that function works. It has more than 8000 levels of pressure sensitivity allowing me to manipulate the size of the brush on the fly. If I want to expand my brush I just press a bit harder and watch the cursor expand and contract as I press harder or softer.

And price is $50.00!!! This thing is a STEAL at this price. If you are on the fence and you have the money to spend (and with Amazon's return efficiency should you decide this tablet isn't right for you) you should DEFINITELY LOOK HARD at this model. I am very pleased with my choice and look forward to a long relationship with my new Huion Inspiroy tablet.

So, for this review to help your purchase, you need to check these boxes.

      – Do you plan to use the full area of this tablet? (if not, look at something like the H430, it's cheaper, and smaller. have used it before, works about the same.)
      – Are you on Windows? (7, 8, 10, 11, all works about the same)
      – Are you ok with the hassle of downloading alternate drivers?

If you answered yes to these questions, then this review is for you. Let's get into it.

So, all things considered, this thing is great! Pen pressure works, full area is great, very responsive, just all in all a good price to performance tablet. Now, thats about all good things I have to say. In to the nitty gritty we go…

The drivers suck, and they suck bad. Things have obviously been google translated and it shows. It "works" well enough for people just giving things a try, but if you are sticking with this tablet in the long run, the driver experience just isn't there. A fix for this is OpenTabletDriver. Primarily, this is used by osu! players, however it has been optimized for most drawing softwares out of the box. Paint.net, Photoshop, Krita, you name it. But – this isn't an advertisement on the fratures of OpenTabletDriver, so do your own research and see if it's right for you.

Moving along, the nibs wear down easily compared to other tablets. It isn't exactly the worst problem, as it still takes a LONG time to get through them all, but having to pay 20$ every so often (maybe about a year with heavy use in my experience) it isnt really ideal. But, hey, at least it comes with replacements… (cough cough gaomon cough cough)

Also – for the osu! players out there. Just get the H430. I promise you, you will not be using the full area of this tablet. Thank me later.

Anyways, I'll stop writing now. Hopefully this helps someone!

I'm a professional photographer and use a tablet daily. I needed to replace the small one that I had been using and decided to go with this. I'm glad I did. It works great, and it's very responsive. I'm on a MacBook Pro M1, and have had no issues with the driver or functionality. Every once in a while if I am using a second monitor, I have to go in and change the active area to the second monitor, but it's easy to make the switch and once I do it stays there. The pen is comfortable and easy to grip. The tilt and active pressure functions are very responsive and flow naturally. My only regret is that I didn't go for the Bluetooth / wireless version. I have to connect using a USB-C port. So I might get a dock and leave it connected. That way I don't have to keep plugging it in every time I want to use it. Overall, I think it's a great upgrade to the small one I previously had, and I am very happy to have and use this one. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a tablet that won't break your bank.

This was my first digital drawing tablet and I have to say I'm blown away. I got the H950P, it comes with Android device adapters, tablet cable, extra pen nibs, pen stand, a pen that doesn't need to be charged which has 2 keys of its own, and the tablet which has 8 mappable keys. I use Krita as my main drawing application and managed to pick it up within half an hour. The tilt support is awesome, it's a good sensitivity to pressure, and the working space is big enough to be comfortable. I would recommend getting a glove with it or putting some fabric under your hand for cleaner lines (so your hand doesn't stick to it) but other than that the whole thing is awesome. It was also incredibly easy to setup and map the keys. Definitely recommend.
