    TGL Best Bets and Prediction: New York vs. Atlanta

    So far this year, we’ve seen an underdog win (The Bay in Week 1) and a big favorite win (Los Angeles in Week 2).

    So, does that mean anything can happen in the TGL? Well, maybe. But that’s not really what happened.

    In both of these victories so far, the better team based on the data leading into the matchup came out the victor.

    Based on the average true strokes gained over their last 50 rounds, via datagolf, for each side’s starters, there’s a clear favorite here based on the data: Atlanta. The gap is quite massive (+1.30 versus +0.53).

    Also of note, Atlanta has a huge tee-to-green advantage (+1.26 to +0.09), though New York fields the better putting team (+0.44 to +0.04).

    But six of the 15 holes slated to be played this week are at least 550 yards, and Atlanta holds a distance advantage, one that would be even more massive without Cameron Young’s big-hitting stats factored in for New York.

    We haven’t seen quite enough variance from the Hammer or the setup to suggest that New York — without Schauffele — has what it takes to outlast Atlanta’s strong squad.

    The 15-hole format and equal reliance on every player on the squad has led to the better team winning thus far.

    For that reason, I’m siding with an Atlanta win as my prediction for Week 3.

  • MTA subway stations get metal fins in latest bid to curb fare evasion – NBC New York


    New Yorkers taking the subway may soon see spikey new additions to the turnstile gates.

    The MTA said newly installed sharp metal barriers are meant to deter turnstile jumpers. The installation is part of the city’s plan to prevent fare evasion.

    As of now, the MTA said the subway spikes have been installed at the 59th Street-Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street-Times Square subway stations.

    But videos appeared on X, formerly known as Twitter, last week, showing a number of masked individuals easily hoping over the turnstiles and avoiding the spikes — and the fare.

    Back in 2022, the MTA estimated fare and toll evasion cost the transit agency nearly $700 million.

    When reached for comment Saturday, a spokesperson directed NBC New York to a press release from May 2024 detailing the “turnstile fin” pilot project — one of many approaches to addressing what the agency considers a costly and systemic problem.

    The “fin” installation isn’t the only method deployed to try and curb straphangers beating the fare. The MTA has been widely using “gate guards,” who are positioned at the emergency exit gates in an effort to stop people from tailgating inside the station as riders exit.

    The move comes as riders brace for another price hike.

    At the end of last year, the MTA approved his bi-yearly fare increase for subway riders. The current fare of $2.90 is expected to jump to at least $3 this coming August.

    The last increase, in 2023, saw the fare jump 15 cents, from $2.75 to the current rate of $2.90.

    The New York Jets will have a new head coach for the 2025 season after the Robert Saleh regime failed to produce a winning record, let alone a playoff berth in four seasons.

    Jets Wire will break down each candidate that receives an interview detailing their experience as well as the highs and lows of their coaching career. In the end, we’ll determine if the candidate is worth a shot or if the Jets should pass for someone better.

    For the next spin on the coaching carousel, we take a look at New Orleans Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi:

    A Relative Unknown

    Rizzi has never been a head coach in the NFL and his only experience as a head coach was one season with the University of Rhode Island in 2008. His team wasn’t very good as the Rams finished 3-9 and a 1-7 conference record.

    His NFL coaching experience centers primarily around special teams. He was Special Teams Coordinator under the late Tony Sparano with the Miami Dolphins in 2010. Rizzi stayed on as special teams coordinator under Sparano’s replacement, Joe Philbin, as well as Adam Gase.

    Rizzi interviewed for the Dolphins head coaching job after the 2018 season but the job was ultimately given to Brian Flores. He joined Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints in 2019 after Flores elected not to retain Rizzi for his coaching staff.

    After Sean Payton temporarily retired from coaching in 2022, the Saints replaced him with defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen. Rizzi was retained by Allen and was named Assistant Head Coach along with being the Saints special teams coordinator.

    Allen was fired in November after the Saints started out the 2024 season 2-0 and then lost seven straight games. Rizzi was named the interim head coach for the final 8 games, where he was 3-5 and finished in last place in the NFC South.

    Would Jets Wire Hire Him?

    The Verdict: Not a Chance

    Rizzi is a relative unknown with only eight games of NFL head coaching experience. While that technically makes Rizzi an experienced head coach, there is no way the Jets organization could ever sell Rizzi to their beaten down fan base as the savior of the franchise.

    TAMPA — The Washington Commanders have had quite the storybook season, winning 12 games after being projected to win less than 7 before the year began.

    As expected, when that type of season unfolds for a team like the Commanders, there’s plenty of credit being dispersed to multiple people who have varying roles within the rising franchise.

    One of them, Washington assistant general manager Lance Newmark, has gotten so much attention that the New York Jets were reportedly scheduled to meet with him about their current opening at the top roster-building position in the front office. That, according to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager.

    That report came Saturday morning, and by the afternoon the Jets’ website confirmed the team had completed its virtual interview with Newmark that same day.

    Sharing information about the candidate to New York fans who don’t likely know much about Newmark the site shared, “Newmark joined the Washington staff after a 26-year run with the Detroit Lions. Before leaving the Motor City, Newmark served as the senior director of player personnel for Detroit and helped oversee college and pro scouting operations. He also held roles with the Lions as director of player personnel (2016-21), director of college scouting (2015-16), assistant director of college scouting (2008-14), national scout (2005-07) and area scout (1999-2004).”

    Newmark’s resume is an impressive one so it should come as no surprise he’s getting looks for a promotion this hiring cycle. His participation in the revival of both the Lions and Commanders franchises is going to surely set him apart from others competing for open jobs this offseason.

    Monday’s matchup is shaping up to be a scrappy game: The Knicks haven’t given up the ball easily this season, having only averaged 12.2 turnovers per game (they’re ranked third in turnovers per game overall). It’s a different story for the Hawks, though, as they’ve been averaging 15. Given the Knicks’ sizable advantage in that area, the Hawks will need to find a way to close that gap.

    The Knicks came up short against the Hawks in their previous matchup back in December of 2024, falling 108-100. Can the Knicks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.
