A man is recovering on New Year’s Eve after being violently pushed onto subway tracks in front of an upcoming chain in Chelsea, law enforcement sources tell NBC New York.

The 45-year-old victim was struck by a southbound no. 1 train at the 18th Street station just after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the NYPD.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital with injuries to his head and a broken rib, but was conscious and alert, and is expected to survive, a law enforcement source tells NBC New York.

The NYPD said Tuesday evening it has a 23-year-old person of interest in custody, who has multiple prior arrests for assault and harassment, according to law enforcement sources.

Surveillance video obtained by NBC New York, which is difficult to watch, appears to show the victim was checking his phone when he was pushed from the platform by someone wearing a jacket with a hood over his head just moments before the train arrived at the station.

No. 1 trains were skipping the 18 St station Tuesday afternoon and the 1, 2 and 3 trains were running with details in both directions, according to the MTA.

From the Washington Post to CBS News, 2024 was the year of the liberal newsroom revolt

There has been a growing trend at legacy media organizations where progressive staffers ignite a war with their employers over an editorial position that does not align with their own.

Among the most memorable clashes in recent years include the social media revolt by New York Times staffers over the infamous Tom Cotton op-ed in 2020 and the open attacks by CNN employees over the network’s Trump town hall in 2023.

In 2024, that trend exploded across multiple news outlets. These were the biggest newsroom revolts of the year:

NBC’s hiring (and firing) of Ronna McDaniel

NBC News was engulfed in a firestorm fueled by its own staffers after the network announced in March it had hired former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel as a contributor.

The practice of major news organizations hiring ex-lawmakers, government officials and political insiders has existed for decades and has largely been non-controversial. But a chorus of NBC talent, particularly from its liberal cable arm MSNBC, publicly disavowed McDaniel’s hiring, citing her alleged actions in trying to block the certification of Michigan’s election results in 2020.

“We weren’t asked our opinion of the hiring, but if we were, we would have strongly objected to it for several reasons including, but not limited to, as lawyers might say, Ms. McDaniel’s role in Donald Trump’s fake elector scheme and her pressuring election officials to not certify election results while Donald Trump was on the phone,” MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said on “Morning Joe.” 

Rachel Maddow, MSNBC’s biggest star, blasted NBC’s “inexplicable” decision to hire McDaniel and expressed hope that the network would reverse its decision.

CBS News’ internal uproar over the Dokoupil-Coates interview

In October, the left-wing staff at CBS News lashed out at their colleague, “CBS Mornings” co-host Tony Dokoupil, over his tough but civil interview exchange with progressive author Ta-Nehisi Coates. 

Dokoupil, who is Jewish and has children living in Israel, grilled Coates, whose new book “The Message” is harshly critical of Israel and has been rebuked by the Jewish state’s defenders for its shallow analysis of a complicated conflict.

“The content of that section would not be out of place in the backpack of an extremist,” Dokoupil told Coates about one portion about his trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories, asking him “Why leave out so much” and “What is it that so particularly offends you about the existence of a Jewish state that is a Jewish safe place?” 

CBS leadership reassured offended staff members that following a review, they concluded that the interview did not meet the company’s “editorial standards,” the Free Press reported, which obtained audio of the staff meeting. 

While a source familiar with the matter told Fox News Digital that Dokoupil would not be punished over the interview, he was forced to meet with the network’s in-house Race and Culture Unit following complaints. According to The New York Times, the conversation “focused on Mr. Dokoupil’s tone of voice, phrasing and body language” during the interview.

San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York put to rest any speculation about the futures of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch amid a disappointing 2024 campaign. Speaking with Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard before Monday night’s primetime matchup against the Detroit Lions, York was direct when asked about their status.

“They’re not going anywhere,” York stated firmly.

When Kawakami followed up to confirm if he could be quoted, York reiterated, “You can write that, for sure. They’re not going anywhere.”

Kawakami elaborated on the exchange, writing, “Over the next several minutes, York generally elaborated that while nobody in the organization is happy with the results this season, and not every decision worked out, he’s not tossing out everything as a knee-jerk reaction.”

Four weeks after a spitballed idea about how the Bears should try to fill their coaching vacancy morphed into a widespread thought that 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan could be traded to Chicago, team owner Jed York has chimed in regarding both Shanahan and G.M. john Lynch.

“They’re not going anywhere,” York said before Monday night’s game, via Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard.

It all started when someone (me) suggested that the Bears should break from the typical categories of coaching candidates (coordinators, fired former NFL head coaches, and college coaches) to call teams that might be thinking about making a change, and then if there’s an opening attempting to make a deal. I mentioned Shanahan, Ravens coach John Harbaugh, and Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel.

In the aftermath, Shanahan became the focal point. Two weeks ago, Troy Aikman endorsed that approach during the Bears-Vikings Monday night game.

The point stands. The Bears should make the calls. Hell, they should still call York. If he’s intrigued by what he could get from the Bears or someone else, who knows what might happen?

Shanahan was mentioned in part because it feels like both sides might benefit from a fresh start, and because the 49ers nearly traded Jim Harbaugh to the Browns in 2014, after three straight seasons of NFC Championship appearances, with a Super Bowl berth in the second.

The calls are free. And proven coaches are worth the draft-pick compensation.

As Aikman explained it, promoting a successful coordinator involves a roll of the dice that he’ll thrive at the next level. A coordinator who has already shown he can coach an NFL team has real value.

Besides, haven’t we learned to not take such broad proclamations at face value? From multiple teams having “no intention” to trade a player who was then traded to a man who once said “I’m not going to be the Alabama coach” who then became the Alabama coach, certain situations require certain things to be said. In no uncertain terms.

Even if the truth entails far less certainty.

New York Knicks’ Josh Hart Keeps It Simple

New York Knicks forward Josh Hart doesn’t treat basketball like rocket science. Instead, it’s still the same old game with a ball and a hoop that he played as a kid.

Now, he’s playing it for millions of dollars at the highest level in the world, but that doesn’t change much about how he views the game.

“My game is very simple,” Hart said. “I don’t go out there and try to do ball screens and 18 dribbles, dribble combos, and all that. I keep it simple. If I don’t have a layup or a shot, I swing the ball, get these guys involved and fit in around them.”

Hart is the ultimate glue guy for the Knicks. He is able to be a tool for each one of his teammates on the floor and help them with their own individual games, and every team needs a player like that in order to be successful.

By keeping things simple, Hart is having the best season of his career. Hart is averaging a career-best 14.2 points per game while making nearly 70 percent of his 2-point field goal attempts. That has turned into his bread and butter and reason behind a simplistic game.

“It is just something simple,” Hart said. “I always feel I finish well at the rim. For my size, I think I have been one of the best finishers at the rim for the last several years. Plus, it is something I take pride in. Obviously with [Karl-Anthony Towns] we have an additional space out there. I work on layups all the time so that helps.”

If Hart can keep things simple, it can lead to a long postseason run for the Knicks this season.

Hart and the Knicks are returning to the court tonight for the second of a two-game series against the Washington Wizards. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
