  • Preview: Denver Nuggets travel to New York to face the Knicks

The Denver Nuggets stagger into Madison Square Garden tonight to face the New York Knicks. Denver has lost a couple of sorry defensive performances in a row, while the Knicks are winners of four straight. Nikola Jokic had another triple-double in the loss to the Chicago Bulls on Monday night, but no one on the Nuggets seems to want to play defense right now. After a really nice stretch of basketball against some injured and overmatches squads, Denver is coming back to earth and has to face the notion that otherworldly offense when Joker is on the floor doesn’t solve everything if they do nothing else.

Both squads are 7-3 in their last ten, but Denver is tied with the Lakers in the loss column in the Western Conference standings, and only has a three game lead on eighth place out West – they need to start playing with some urgency. The Knicks on the other hand look rejuvenated after their rough stretch and are knocking on the door of second place in the East as they stand one game behind the Celtics. There is plenty to play for in the couple of weeks before the All Star Break – here’s hoping Denver remembers that tonight.

    The Essentials

Who: Denver Nuggets (28-18) at New York Knicks (31-16)

    When: 5:30PM MST

Where: Madison Square Garden, The Big Apple, Earth

How to watch/listen: Denver Stiffs does not condone piracy. ESPN. Altitude, or 92.5 FM. Say you have Dumbo’s feather for the locker room to give the Nuggets some courage.

    Rival Blog: Posting and Toasting

Injury report: Trey Alexander – out (G League assignment), Spencer Jones – out (G League assignment),Vlatko Cancar – out (the worst luck ever and also knee surgery), DaRon Holmes II – out (Achilles); Josh Hart – questionable (knee), Pacome Dadiet – out (toe), Mitchell Robinson – out (ankle), Kevin McCullar Jr. – out (knee)

    The Three Things

The thing to watch for:  Pride

Look, we can talk Xs and Os all we want, but if the Nuggets don’t care to play hard on both sides of the ball then there’s not a gameplan on Earth that can overcome that. Denver has always had an intermittent motor when it comes to defense, while the Knicks grind so hard on that side of the floor their knees dislocate occasionally. Coaches Michael Malone and Tom Thibodeau were both on Jeff Van Gundy’s staff back in the day, and both coaches will run their guys into the ground, but Malone has an offensively-oriented team that doesn’t always enjoy the dirty work. As Malone says though, he shouldn’t have to coach effort, and hopefully embarrassing themselves for two games in a row – and facing a team that properly humbled Denver on its home court to the tune of a 145-118 beatdown earlier this season – will have the Nuggets in the right mindset for this matchup. If not, this could get embarrassing quickly as the Knicks have put up 140+ in their past two games, against the Memphis Grizzlies and the Sacramento Kings. Denver will have to put the work in to avoid being a trophy for the MSG crowd.

The thing to remember: Math is simple, execution is tougher

Neither the Knicks nor the Nuggets take a lot of threes. New York is 25th in attempts at 35 a game and Denver is 30th with just 31 attempts. They are both top-5 in percentage though – they make the ones they take. The Knicks made 19-of-36 against Denver last time, and it’s hard to beat a team that makes 50% of its threes. Denver has to close out to shooters better; the Bulls lit them up from behind the arc also on Monday, and every team that acts like a volume shooter against the Nuggets three-point defense seems to do very well. Karl-Anthony Towns will come out motivated against Nikola Jokic – he always is. The Nuggets will hound Jamal Murray to try to make him give up the ball. Julian Strawther can’t be scoreless as the only real bench shooter and Michael Porter Jr. needs to react to physicality with buckets instead of excuses. Aaron Gordon can’t be dragging his leg around on perimeter defense and both Christian Braun and Peyton Watson need to defend as hard as they are defended at the very least.

But it’s all about execution. In the early moments and the late ones alike, the Nuggets need to execute their plan on both sides of the ball. New York looks bright-eyed and bushy-tailed now that Thibs has extended his rotation to more of a nine-man, and it’s up to Denver to match that energy and make the math harder on the Knicks by actually contesting and re-contesting, all night long.

The thing to bet: Denver + 3

I don’t expect the Knicks to blow out the Nuggets. Denver on the road is never a safe bet against a good team, which the Knicks absolutely are, but pride should come in at some point. Denver was in a groove and then ran into a Timberwolves team that just harassed them and a Bulls squad that made its deep shots. Denver jogged through those performances limply – I think MSG will bring out their competitive fire. If you’re getting the points, take em because at +3 that’s the sites just giving the Knicks the standard home court advantage. If they think it’s basically even up, then bet on the MVP I say – and hope everyone comes out mad early.

Get ready basketball fans, the Denver Nuggets are heading to the Big Apple to take on the New York Knicks in what is sure to be an exciting matchup. The Nuggets, led by stars Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, will be looking to continue their winning streak and solidify their position in the Western Conference standings.

On the other side, the Knicks, led by Julius Randle and RJ Barrett, will be looking to defend their home court and come out with a win against a tough opponent. Both teams have been playing well as of late, so this game is sure to be a close and competitive one.

Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as the Denver Nuggets travel to New York to face the Knicks. It’s sure to be a game you won’t want to miss! #DenverNuggets #NewYorkKnicks #NBA #Basketball #Preview

  • Chris Banjo leaves Denver Broncos to join New York Jets

The Denver Broncos have lost yet another member of Sean Payton’s coaching staff.

Broncos assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo is set to leave the team to become the new special teams coordinator of the New York Jets, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Denver now has five coaching staff openings.

Banjo, 34, was a safety and special teams ace in the NFL from 2013-2022, spending time with four teams, including a stint with the New Orleans Saints under Payton. When Payton became the Broncos’ head coach in 2023, he hired Banjo as an assistant coach right after the ex-safety retired from playing.

Denver has now lost all three special teams coaches from last season. Mike Westhoff retired last November, Ben Kotwica was fired earlier this month and Banjo has now left for a promotion elsewhere.

The good news for the Broncos is that ex-Saints interim head coach/special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi could be joining Payton’s staff soon. Kellen Moore is believed to be a leading candidate to get the head coach job in New Orleans, which would make Rizzi available for Denver.

If Rizzi does not get the HC job with the Saints, he will likely land with the Broncos and Klis has reported that assistant Phil Galiano could join Rizzi in Denver. Rizzi potentially landing with the Broncos might not be finalized until after New Orleans makes its hire official.

We will track all of Denver’s coaching staff moves on Broncos Wire.

In a surprising move, safety Chris Banjo has decided to leave the Denver Broncos and join the New York Jets. Banjo, who signed with the Broncos earlier this offseason, was expected to provide depth and veteran leadership in the secondary.

The decision to leave Denver and join the Jets comes as a bit of a shock, as Banjo was seen as a valuable addition to the Broncos defense. However, it seems that the opportunity to play a larger role in New York was too good to pass up.

Banjo, who has played for several teams during his NFL career, brings a wealth of experience and versatility to the Jets defense. His ability to play both safety and special teams will no doubt be an asset to the team as they look to improve on their 2-14 record from last season.

It will be interesting to see how Banjo fits in with his new team and how he contributes to their defense. Jets fans will no doubt be excited to see what he brings to the table as they look to turn things around in the upcoming season.

  • Harvey Weinstein’s retrial on rape charges in New York is set for April 15

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood mogul whose sexual misconduct helped fuel the #MeToo movement, will face retrial in New York on rape charges on April 15, a judge announced Wednesday.

Weinstein, 72, was convicted in 2020 in New York of the third-degree rape of one woman and a first-degree criminal sex act against another woman and sentenced to 23 years in prison. That conviction was overturned last April after a state appellate court, in a 4-3 decision, determined that the trial judge had erred by allowing women to testify about allegations that were not part of the case.

In September, a New York City grand jury indicted Weinstein on new charges.

Judge Curtis Farber said Wednesday that Weinstein’s retrial will include a new allegation involving a woman who wasn’t in the original case. The woman alleges he forced oral sex on her at a Manhattan hotel in 2006.

Weinstein is being held at the Rikers Island jail complex. He arrived in the Manhattan courtroom Wednesday in a wheelchair amid a litany of health issues. NBC News was first to report last year that he has chronic myeloid leukemia.

During the court hearing, Weinstein pushed for an earlier trial date, citing his health.

“I won’t be there for April,” he said. “I can’t wait for tomorrow. I can’t hold on anymore. I am holding on because I want justice … I want this to be over with.”

Farber said he has another trial scheduled but would do his best to accommodate a date a week earlier if all parties agree. The judge also denied Weinstein’s attorney’s motion to dismiss the new indictment against him.

A spokesperson for Weinstein said in a statement after the hearing that “Judge Farber demonstrated exceptional responsiveness, and we deeply appreciate his thoughtful consideration of Harvey’s condition and circumstances. We remain confident in a swift and efficient trial process and firmly believe that Harvey will be fully exonerated.”

In addition to the New York case, Weinstein was found guilty of one count of rape and two counts of sexual assault in 2022 in Los Angeles and sentenced to 16 years. Weinstein’s legal team is appealing that conviction.

In all, more than 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexual assault or harassment. He has repeatedly denied the claims, insisting the encounters in question were consensual.

The charges against Weinstein were first reported in 2017 by The New York Times and The New Yorker. The articles inspired a wider reckoning in the entertainment and other high-profile industries.

Harvey Weinstein’s retrial on rape charges in New York is set for April 15

After a mistrial was declared in Harvey Weinstein’s rape case in New York last year, a retrial has been scheduled for April 15. The former Hollywood producer is facing charges of rape and sexual assault stemming from allegations made by multiple women.

Weinstein, once a powerful figure in the film industry, has been accused by numerous women of sexual misconduct and abuse over the years. The #MeToo movement brought many of these allegations to light, leading to his downfall and eventual arrest.

The upcoming retrial is expected to be closely watched, as it will once again shine a spotlight on the issue of sexual harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry. Weinstein’s defense team is likely to argue that the encounters were consensual, while the prosecution will present evidence of non-consensual behavior.

As the trial date approaches, there is sure to be much speculation and media coverage surrounding Weinstein and the allegations against him. Stay tuned for updates on this high-profile case.

  • Past Houston Astros World Series Champion Returns to New York Mets

The Houston Astros have now traded two core pieces of their 2022 World Series championship team this offseason after Ryan Pressly was the latest to get dealt to the Chicago Cubs, joining Kyle Tucker.

Moving on from players who have helped them win at a high level is not uncommon for the Astros, and since they have let potential franchise legends walk out the door in the past, virtually nobody is safe when it comes to their replaceability.

Just ask Alex Bregman right now.

But, Pressly and Tucker weren’t the first players from that title-winning group to find homes with different teams.

Ryne Stanek, Phil Maton and Hector Neris all departed in free agency last offseason. The trio were staples in the backend of the bullpen that Houston moved on from, instead opting to hand Josh Hader his megadeal.

Neris eventually returned the team in 2024 after he was released by the Cubs, but Stanek and Maton have struggled since leaving the building.

Both were still on the market looking for work this upcoming season until Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported that Stanek agreed to a one-year contract to return to the New York Mets.

At the time of writing, no compensation figures have been released.

Stanek was dominant for the Astros in 2022 with a 1.15 ERA across his 59 appearances, striking out 62 batters in 54.2 innings pitched and producing a mind-boggling ERA+ of 333 that was more than triple the league average.

    But, that’s where he peaked.

Stanek had a 4.09 ERA the following year, and this past season, he regressed further to producing an ERA of 4.88.

The Mets are likely viewing him as a buy-low addition since he wasn’t great for them in 2024 with a 6.06 ERA across his 17 outings.

After winning a World Series with the Houston Astros in 2017, outfielder Michael Brantley is set to return to New York as he signs with the Mets for the upcoming season. Brantley, known for his consistent hitting and strong defensive skills, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Mets lineup.

During his time with the Astros, Brantley was a key contributor to their championship run, batting .309 with 20 home runs and 92 RBIs in the regular season. His clutch hitting in the postseason helped propel the Astros to their first ever World Series title.

Now, Brantley will bring his talents to the Mets, where he will join a talented roster led by stars like Jacob deGrom and Francisco Lindor. His presence in the lineup is sure to give the Mets a boost as they look to make a deep playoff run in the upcoming season.

Fans in New York are excited to welcome Brantley back to the city and are eager to see what he can bring to the team. With his experience and skill set, Brantley is poised to make a significant impact on the Mets’ quest for a championship.
