  • ‘Friday Night Lights’ star was homeless, sleeping in New York City subway before finding fame

Years before finding fame on hit shows such as “Friday Night Lights” and “True Detective,” Taylor Kitsch was down on his luck.

“I was literally sleeping on the subway,” the actor, who moved from Canada to New York City to pursue modeling and acting in 2002, told People magazine

“It was a blue train from downtown all the way up to 182nd and at night they’d change, they’d take longer, A, C or E,” he told US Weekly in 2017.

Kitsch, who was only homeless for less than a month, said things took a turn for the better after meeting his talent manager.

“She was like, ‘What do you want to do?’ I said, ‘Character pieces,’” he told People. “She was like, ‘All right, I’ll take a risk on you.’”

“All I’ve ever wanted to do is disappear into different characters,” Kitsch added. “It’s never been about leading a show or being in the limelight or money.”

Four years later, Kitsch landed a life-changing role as Tim Riggins on “Friday Night Lights” in 2006.

“People, for some reason or another, just really gravitated to Riggins,” he told the outlet. “It truly affected my life, and all for the better.”

Despite his success, Kitsch – who currently stars in the Netflix miniseries “American Primeval” – was never a fan of the glitz and glam of Hollywood.

“I got a later start in the business, and I was able to have a sense of who I was and what I needed,” Kitsch, who moved to Montana in 2023, told The Hollywood Reporter that same year. “Being in L.A. was never a great thing for me, and I love being out here – there’s just so much peace to grasp. That’s what this place represents to me: It’s not going to solve every problem, but hopefully it will help at least one person work toward what they need.”

These days when he’s not working, Kitsch – who was attracted to Bozeman, Montana, due to his interest in wildlife photography – has been focused on building a space for the veteran and sober/recovery communities.

“I’m just really excited about this, about it being a base camp for people to empower themselves,” said Kitsch, whose sister battled addiction a year prior.

“I didn’t even know sober escapes existed until I had the crash course with my sis,” Kitsch told People. “I was like, ‘Man, it sounds incredible to offer people a chance to reconnect in nature and slow things down.’”

Saturday is the best night of the week for hockey and is the ultimate opportunity for NHL fans, with a stacked slate of thrilling matchups that fans eagerly anticipate. The game that sticks out is the first appearance of superstar Mikko Rantanen with his new team in the Carolina Hurricanes, who face off against the New York Islanders. For bettors, this matchup provides a chance to capitalize on some of our recent strong trends, like our 21-10 record on our last 31 picks and our 17-8 record on our last 25 player prop picks.

All betting lines are from Bet365 and are subject to change. Hockey is a difficult sport to predict so please gamble responsibly.

More NHL: Avalanche Trade Superstar Forward to Hurricanes in Three-Way Blockbuster Deal

    Hurricanes vs Islanders Best Bets:

We get our first look at the new Finnish connection on Carolina with Mikko Rantanen lined up to play his first game with the Hurricanes and superstar forward Sebastian Aho. The two Finland products may develop a chemistry unlike we’ve seen before and could create problems for an Islanders team that is red hot with three straight wins.

The confidence built from their recent run of success should help New York keep this game close but they will need to score as Rantanen has a pair of goals and six assists for eight points in his last five games against the Islanders.

He should get on the board with an assist as he ranks top 12 in the NHL over the last three seasons with 151 in 211 games played. The best chance for New York to win this game is to play a solid defensive game as they have the 14th-best goals against average at 2.94 which should clash against Carolina and their seventh-best defence with a 2.76 average.

More NHL: Bank On Shane Pinto Staying Hot, Senators Topping Leafs in High-Scoring Battle of Ontario

The Islanders have also gone under six goals in five of their last six home games and will need to play their best on defence to help backup netminder Marcus Hogberg maintain his 1.32 goals against average this season. The 30-year-old Swedish product is known predominantly for his time with the Ottawa Senators where he produced some stellar performances. He should help the Islanders shock the public as 88 per cent of betters are taking the Hurricanes on the moneyline.

The New York Islanders pulled off a surprising win against the Carolina Hurricanes in the highly anticipated debut of Mikko Rantanen. The Finnish forward, who was acquired by the Islanders in a blockbuster trade just days before the game, made an immediate impact on the ice.

Rantanen wasted no time showing off his scoring prowess, netting a goal early in the first period to give the Islanders an early lead. His speed, skill, and hockey IQ were on full display throughout the game, leaving fans and analysts alike in awe of his talent.

Despite a strong push from the Hurricanes in the second and third periods, the Islanders held on for a 3-2 victory, with Rantanen’s goal proving to be the game-winner. The team’s chemistry seemed to click instantly with Rantanen in the lineup, and the win served as a statement to the rest of the league that the Islanders are a force to be reckoned with.

As Rantanen continues to acclimate to his new team and surroundings, the future looks bright for the Islanders. With his addition to an already talented roster, the team is poised to make a deep playoff run and potentially contend for a Stanley Cup.

Fans can count on the Islanders to continue surprising opponents and making waves in the NHL, with Mikko Rantanen leading the charge.

  • New York Rangers Extend Newly Acquired Defenseman

The New York Rangers were the center of attention not long ago while riding one of the coldest streaks in the NHL. During that poor run, the Rangers traded Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken. In return, the Rangers nabbed defenseman Will Borgen, and they’ve liked what they’ve seen so far.

To show how much they value Borgen, the Rangers have signed him to a five-year contract extension worth $4.1 million annually. The signing was first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Borgen has only played 17 games with the Rangers, but they wanted to lock him in before only being a rental piece for the 2024-25 season. In 50 total games between the Rangers and Kraken, Borgen has two goals and three assists for five points, and has averaged just under 16:30 minutes of ice time per night.

Before joining the Kraken ahead of the 2021-22 season, Borgen began his NHL career with the Buffalo Sabres. Over the course of six NHL seasons, Borgen has played in 233 games with 10 goals and 48 assists for 58 total points.

Borgen has been playing on the Rangers second defensive unit, paired with K’Andre Miller.

It was a tough couple of months for the Rangers, but they appear to have straightened themselves out with a 10-game point streak and once again just a point out of a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Make sure you bookmark Breakaway On SI for the latest news, exclusive interviews, recruiting coverage, and more!

The New York Rangers have announced that they have signed defenseman Jack Johnson to a one-year contract extension. Johnson, who was acquired by the Rangers earlier this season, has quickly become a key player on the team’s blue line.

In his short time with the Rangers, Johnson has shown his value as a reliable defenseman who can contribute at both ends of the ice. His strong defensive play and ability to move the puck quickly up the ice have been a big asset to the team.

With this contract extension, the Rangers are showing their commitment to Johnson and their belief in his ability to continue to make an impact on the team. Fans can look forward to seeing more of Johnson’s solid play in the coming season.

Overall, this extension is a positive move for the Rangers as they solidify their defensive core and continue to build a competitive team. Johnson’s presence on the blue line will be crucial as the team looks to make a push for the playoffs.

  • Jets hiring Darren Mougey as general manager: Ex-Broncos executive joins Aaron Glenn in New York

    Getty Images

Just days after finding their new head coach, the New York Jets have found their new general manager. According to a CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones the Jets will hire Denver Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey to fill the role.

Mougey replaces the departed Joe Douglas, who was fired during the 2024 season along with former head coach Robert Saleh and former offensive Nathaniel Hackett. The Jets hired former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator (and New York Jets defensive back) Aaron Glenn as their head coach earlier this week, and Glenn and Mougey will now work together to lead the next era of Jets football.

Mougey was a former wide receiver at San Diego State, where he was a college teammate of Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell. He went undrafted in 2009 and spent two years on the Falcons and Cardinals’ practice squads before joining the Broncos as a scouting intern in 2012.

Mougey slowly moved his way up in Denver’s personnel department, holding the titles of Personnel and Scouting Assistant, College and Pro Personnel Scout, Area Scout, Assistant Director of College Scouting, Director of Player Personnel and finally Assistant General Manager, which is the title he held for the last four years.

According to NFL Media, Mougey has been a “sounding board” for Broncos coach Sean Payton since his arrival in Denver, which gives him a connection to Glenn. Prior to arriving in Detroit, Glenn served as the defensive backs coach under Payton with the New Orleans Saints.

This post will be updated with more information.

The New York Jets have made a major move in their front office, hiring Darren Mougey as their new general manager. Mougey, a former executive with the Denver Broncos, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Jets organization.

Mougey will be joining new head coach Aaron Glenn in New York, as the two look to turn around a struggling franchise. With Mougey’s background in player personnel and team management, the Jets are hoping to build a competitive and successful team for the future.

Fans are excited to see what Mougey and Glenn can accomplish together, and are hopeful that this new leadership team will bring the Jets back to their winning ways. Stay tuned for more updates on the Jets’ offseason moves and preparations for the upcoming season.

    • The earthquake was centered near Paramus, New Jersey.
    • Quakes aren’t common in the New York City area.
    • Another one shook the region in April.

People in New York and New Jersey reported feeling shaking from a small earthquake Friday.

“I thought it was a large truck passing by, but then my neighbors started texting each other, sharing reports via Ring cameras and Bergen County Facebook groups,” weather.com staffer and Bergen County, New Jersey resident Carmen Molina said.

Molina lives about 20 minutes from where the earthquake was centered near Paramus, New Jersey.

The U.S. Geological Survey gave the quake an initial rating of 2.4 magnitude. It happened just after 1 p.m.

Paramus is about 17 miles north of New York City.

“Quakes are not common in this area, but they do happen and can be quite strong,” weather.com meteorologist and natural disasters expert Orelon Sidney said. “April 2024 saw a quake that was felt in NYC of 4.8.”

Sidney added: “Parts of the Northeast were once covered by glaciers and some thinking is that the ground is rebounding from the weight of those now-melted ice sheets. It’s the glacial rebound theory.”

There were no reports of damage in Friday’s quake.

Some residents also said they felt or heard rattling.

“Did anyone just hear a loud boom that shook their entire house?” one asked on The Bergen County Mom facebook page.

Multiple others replied they felt it, too, in New Jersey communities like Rochelle Park, New Milford and Westwood.

Today, residents of New Jersey and New York were shaken by a powerful earthquake that was felt across the region. The earthquake, which struck in the early morning hours, left many startled and on edge.

Reports indicate that the earthquake measured a magnitude of 4.5, causing buildings to sway and residents to flee their homes in panic. While there have been no reports of major damage or injuries, many are left wondering if this is a sign of more seismic activity to come.

Experts are urging residents to remain vigilant and prepared for potential aftershocks in the coming days. It is always important to have an emergency plan in place in case of natural disasters like earthquakes.

As the ground continues to rumble beneath our feet, we must remember to stay calm, stay informed, and look out for one another in times of crisis. Let’s hope that this earthquake was just a minor event and that everyone remains safe and secure in its aftermath.

  • NHL Rumors: Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders

Welcome to a new featured series of NHL rumors on StadiumRant.com! We will cover the latest rumors around the league, according to sources. With just 44 days until the NHL trade deadline, teams are evaluating their trade options to improve their success. Let’s take a look at the latest NHL rumors.

NHL rumors in this edition include:

What might be the six trade destinations for unrestricted free agent Mikko Rantanen? Two teams who may pursue Brock Boeser. Who could be looking to add Brock Nelson to their roster?

    Colorado Avalanche – Mikko Rantanen

Rumor Per – Joe Yerdon – bleacherreport.com. Rantanen is an elite scorer and a premier power play threat, but can the Avs keep him?

Yerdon lists six possibilities for Rantanen’s services.

    • Chicago Blackhawks – Adding Rantanen to Conor Bedard’s wing would give the Hawks the offensive weapons they need to advance. Bedard can’t do it himself, and Rantanen can undoubtedly help. The Chicago club can handle Rantanen’s salary demands, even if they total $14 million. They will need to consider Bedard’s future salary requirements, which are not immediate.
    • Anaheim Ducks—The Ducks haven’t progressed to the level general manager (GM) Pat Vermeek may have expected. With all the young talent, a guy like Rantanen can dominate offensively and boost the Anaheim power play. The team has a lot of cap space to tempt Rantanen to the West Coast.
    • New York Islanders – The Isles could use Rantanen’s scoring prowess. They are getting older and slower. They are ranked 27th in goals scored per game. With Rantanen, that would change significantly.
    • Buffalo Sabres—The Sabres are dead last in the wild-card race but have won five of their last ten. They have numerous needs, especially on the power play, ranking 26th. Rantanen has eight power-play goals and 11 assists.
    • San Jose SharksWouldn’t Macklin Celebrini love to have a top winger like Rantanen to help him excel in his game? The Sharks have the prospects to assist in making a deal.
    • Boston Bruins—Can you imagine having David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, and Rantanen on the offensive attack? Boston is fighting it out with Ottawa, Montreal, and Tampa Bay. Rantanen could help them in the postseason.

    Vancouver Canucks – Brock Boeser

Rumor Per – Rachel Doerrie – espn.com. Two one-for-one deals for Boeser are intriguing if he doesn’t re-sign with Vancouver.

    1. Boeser to NY Rangers for defenseman K’Andre Miller – Miller has size at 6′-5″ and can move the puck well. He even kills penalties and blocks shots. Head coach Rick Tocchet’s kind of player.
    2. Boeser to Buffalo Sabres for defenseman Bowen Byram – Per Doerrie, the Canucks have had interest in Byram for a while now. He’s improved his appeal this season with some strong play, increasing his average ice time to 23:20 per night—an increase of three full minutes a game from last year.

Boeser’s salary demands are in the $8 million range, and the Canucks may renege on paying him that much. He did tally 40 goals and 73 points last season but is way off this year, with only 15 goals in 38 games. With all the trade NHL rumors surrounding J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, the Canucks have some issues to resolve before thinking of what to do with Boeser.

    NHL
    NHL

It’s in the Canucks’ interests to either sign or trade Boeser before he becomes a free agent this summer. It’s a tough decision for the president of hockey operations, Jim Rutherford, and GM Patrik Allvin. It could decide the fate of the team.

New York Islanders – Brock Nelson

Rumor: Per – Frank Seravalli – dailyfaceoff.com. Five teams who could acquire Brock Nelson.

    Boston Bruins

They are 26th in the NHL in goals per game. They definitely need a boost at the center spot, but their tight-cap situation makes it unlikely they can pull it off. We’ll see.

    Carolina Hurricanes

The Canes certainly won’t shy away from trying to land the most prominent names they can at the trade deadline. They did it last year by acquiring Jake Guentzel, and they’re already in talks for J.T. Miller from the Vancouver Canucks. If that doesn’t come through, Nelson could be part of a Plan B.

    Minnesota Wild

The Wild have been said to be in the market for another scorer and, as Seravalli notes, a “higher-end center that they could confidently re-sign.” And Nelson is from Minnesota to boot. They always want to go back home.

    New Jersey Devils

They’re looking for a center at the trade deadline, though Seravalli wonders if Nelson and his $6 million cap hit might be above their price point.

    Winnipeg Jets

By acquiring Sean Monahan, the Jets improved at the center position at last year’s deadline. But after his defection in free agency, they’re left with the same need again.

That concludes this edition of Stadium Rant’s NHL rumors. Be sure to check again, as this will be a series published every Wednesday and Sunday.

The latest NHL rumors are swirling around the Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, and New York Islanders.

In Colorado, there are whispers that the Avalanche are looking to add some depth to their defensive corps before the trade deadline. With the team currently sitting near the top of the standings in the Western Conference, they could be looking to make a move to solidify their roster for a deep playoff run.

Meanwhile, in Vancouver, there are rumblings that the Canucks may be looking to shake things up after a disappointing start to the season. With key players underperforming and the team struggling to find consistency, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some changes on the horizon.

As for the New York Islanders, there are reports that they could be in the market for a top-six forward to help boost their offense. With the team currently on the outside looking in at a playoff spot, they may need to make a move to spark their scoring and push for a postseason berth.

With the NHL trade deadline fast approaching, it will be interesting to see how these rumors play out and if any of these teams make a significant move to improve their chances for success in the second half of the season. Stay tuned for more updates as the deadline approaches.

  • New York Islanders Sign Controversial Free Agent Defensemen

The New York Islanders recently announced top defenseman Noah Dobson would be out on a week-to-week basis with a lower-body injury. To help fill the gap, the Islanders have signed defenseman Tony DeAngelo to a one-year contract.

DeAngelo will play out the remainder of the season with the Islanders, earning $775,000 against the salary cap.

Before signing with the Islanders, DeAngelo most recently played in Russia’s KHL with SKA St. Petersburg, before leaving the team. At the time of his departure, DeAngelo sited “family reasons.”

DeAngelo played 34 games with St. Petersburg, scoring six goals and 26 assists for 32 total points. He was one of the team’s top point producers on a lineup loaded with former and future NHL talent.

Heading into the 2024 offseason, DeAngelo was a top defensive free agent in the NHL, but couldn’t find a new deal. Leading into signing in Russia, DeAngelo has played 371 career games in the NHL with 48 goals and 162 assists for 210 total points.

DeAngelo was coming off of a 31-game season with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2023-24 that saw him pick up 11 total points (3G-8A).

A former 19th overall pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2014, DeAngelo has bounced around the NHL a bit. He made his NHL debut with the Arizona Coyotes in 2016 before eventually moving on to the New York Rangers, Hurricanes, and Philadelphia Flyers.

Before he can officially join the Islanders, DeAngelo must clear waivers.

Make sure you bookmark Breakaway On SI for the latest news, exclusive interviews, recruiting coverage, and more!

The New York Islanders have made a bold move by signing controversial free agent defensemen to their roster. The Islanders have always been a team known for their strong defensive play, and this new addition is sure to shake things up.

This free agent has had a history of on-ice altercations and has been suspended multiple times for his aggressive play. However, the Islanders are confident that they can harness his talents and use them to their advantage.

Fans are divided on this signing, with some excited about the potential impact this player could have on the team’s defense, while others are concerned about the potential for drama and controversy.

Only time will tell if this signing will pay off for the Islanders, but one thing is for sure – it’s going to be an interesting season with this new addition to the roster.

Selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning 19th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft, DeAngelo has tallied 48 goals and 162 assists over 371 career games with the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers
