  • Pelicans rookie Yves Missi selected for Rising Stars Game | Pelicans

New Orleans Pelicans general manager Bryson Graham saw something special in Yves Missi the moment he laid eyes on him back in October 2023 at Baylor.

So Graham told Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operation David Griffin that they should put him on their radar.

They did, drafting him with the No. 21 overall pick eight months later.

Now, Missi — who many thought would be a project — is on everyone’s radar.

He’s been one of the best players in the rookie class, which is why he earned a roster spot for the Rising Stars Game during next month’s NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco. The rosters were announced Tuesday.

It’s the sixth straight year the Pelicans have had at least one player in the Rising Stars Game, which consists of rookies and second-year players.

Of the 10 players selected for the rookie team this year, only Jaylen Wells of the Memphis Grizzlies was drafted after Missi.

Miissi is averaging 9 points, 8 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots for the Pelicans, who play the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday at Smoothie King Center.

“He’s just scratching the surface of where we think he can end up,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said in January. “I try not to put a ceiling on these young guys when they come in.”

Missi has started 36 of 44 games, the most of any Pelicans player. He’s also recorded eight double-doubles.

His best game was a 23-point, 12-rebound effort against the Atlanta Hawks. He blocked five shots, a season-high, against the Los Angeles Clippers in late December.

Missi was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month for December. It was a month in which he faced some of the best big men in the league, including Nikola Jokic (Nuggets), Karl-Anthony Towns (Knicks), Alperen Sengun (Rockets), Pascal Siakam (Pacers), Damontas Sabonis (Kings) and Victor Wembanyama (Spurs).

“It’s like a dream coming true, to be honest,” Missi said in January about facing that gauntlet of centers. “It’s always good just having to go coast to coast against them and see what I saw on TV when I was younger.”

NBA All-Star Weekend is set for Feb. 14-16. The Rising Stars Game will be played Feb. 14.

    Schedule changes

The now have a make-up date for the game against the Milwaukee Bucks that was postponed last Wednesday because of snow in New Orleans.

The Pelicans now will host the Bucks at the Smoothie King Center on April 6 at 7:30 p.m. The Pelicans originally were scheduled to host the Orlando Magic that day, but that game has been rescheduled to March 13 at 7 p.m.

The Pelicans’ road game at the Milwaukee Bucks originally was scheduled for April 9 but has been moved to April 10.

Also, the Pelicans’ road game Feb. 5 against the Denver Nuggets now will start at 8 p.m. and will no longer be televised by ESPN. It’ll be shown locally on the Gulf Coast Sports & Entertainment Network.

The New Orleans Pelicans’ rookie sensation Yves Missi has been selected to participate in the Rising Stars Game during NBA All-Star Weekend. The 21-year-old forward has been making waves in his first season in the league, showcasing his impressive skills and athleticism on the court.

Missi, who was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, has quickly established himself as a key player for the Pelicans, averaging 14 points and 6 rebounds per game. His ability to score from all areas of the court, as well as his defensive prowess, has caught the attention of fans and analysts alike.

The Rising Stars Game, which features the top first and second-year players in the league, will give Missi the opportunity to showcase his talents on a bigger stage and compete against some of the best young talent in the NBA. Pelicans fans should be excited to see their promising rookie represent the team in this exciting event.

Congratulations to Yves Missi on this well-deserved honor, and we can’t wait to see him shine in the Rising Stars Game! #Pelicans #YvesMissi #NBAAllStar

  • Update | Ange Postecoglou on Brennan Johnson and Yves Bissouma injuries

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Brennan Johnson and Yves Bissouma miss today’s game at Everton through injury.

Having reported that both players were struggling with knocks in his press conference on Friday, Ange confirmed on Sunday (19 January) that the duo had not travelled for the game at Goodison Park with both players still struggling with issues after Wednesday’s north London derby.

However, while he described Yves’ injury ‘not too bad’, Brennan’s was described ‘a  bit more significant’.

It means the Welsh forward will miss a Spurs game for the first time in 64 matches and the first time in 470 days with the last game he was not involved in being our 1-0 win over Luton in October, 2023.

In a recent press conference, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou provided an update on the injuries of key players Brennan Johnson and Yves Bissouma.

Postecoglou revealed that Johnson has been sidelined with a hamstring injury and is expected to be out for the next two weeks. The young midfielder has been in fine form for Celtic this season, and his absence will be a blow to the team.

As for Bissouma, the midfielder is also dealing with a muscle strain and is set to miss the next three matches. Bissouma has been a key player in Celtic’s midfield, and his absence will be keenly felt.

Postecoglou expressed confidence in the depth of his squad and believes that other players will step up to fill the void left by Johnson and Bissouma’s injuries. He also emphasized the importance of managing the players’ fitness to ensure they make a full recovery before returning to action.

Celtic fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for both Johnson and Bissouma, as the team looks to maintain their strong start to the season. Stay tuned for more updates on their progress.

  • Pelicans’ Yves Missi leaps to head of NBA’ s rookie class | Pelicans

Pelicans’ Yves Missi leaps to head of NBA’ s rookie class | Pelicans

Yves Missi rose high off of the Smoothie King Center floor, his giant left hand near the top of the square on the backboard.

The result of the play Sunday was a blocked shot against perhaps the greatest basketball player on the planet. The rejection of the shot by Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic will no doubt be on Missi’s rookie highlight reel.

But it won’t be his most notable one.

Missi’s rookie season probably will be remembered more for the way he swatted away all the naysaying draft analysts who said his development would take some time.

Here are just a few of the things the experts said about Missi leading up to the NBA draft before the New Orleans Pelicans selected him with the 21st overall pick.

“His skill set is limited. He is a typical non-shooting, non-playmaking, non-shot-creating big man.”

    BLOCKED!!!

“Lacks great feel for the game and polish on both ends of the floor.”

    GET THAT OUTTA HERE!

Just 30 games into his rookie season, Missi has shown it might not take as long as people thought.

“He’s well ahead of the curve,” teammate CJ McCollum said. “He’s probably surprised himself. The development has been great for him. From the first day he got here to now has been night and day.”

He’s used his elite 38.5-inch vertical to leap right to the top of the Rookie of the Year race.

This week, he became the favorite to win the award on online sportsbook FanDuel. If he actually wins it, he’d be just the second player in franchise history to win the honor, joining Chris Paul who won it in the 2005-06 season.

The center position was a big question mark coming into this season after the reliable Jonas Valanciunas signed with the Washington Wizards. Even when the Pels drafted Missi, the position was still considered something that needed to be addressed.

But Missi has learned on the fly and been perhaps the team’s most valuable player through 30 games. He’s no doubt been the most reliable Pelican. He’s played in 29 of 30 games, starting 23 of them. He’s recorded seven double-doubles and is averaging 9.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. Missi leads all rookies in rebounding and is tied for the lead among all players in offensive rebounds per game (4.0).

Over the last 10 games, he’s averaging 12.6 points and 10.6 rebounds. That number is even more impressive when you consider the gauntlet of centers he’s faced over the last five games.

“He’s had a crash course in the NBA,” McCollum said.

Before Jokic, Missi faced Karl-Anthony Towns (Knicks), Alperen Sengun (Rockets), Pascal Siakam (Pacers), Damontas Sabonis (Kings) and second-year phenom Victor Wembanyama (Spurs).

“Yves is handling what we’ve thrown him onto probably better than anyone I can remember,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said. “And he does it with an extreme focus, an extreme confidence and keeps the game pretty simple for himself. His last four of five matchups were All-Stars. He’s battling these guys and holding his own.”

His stat line in Sunday’s overtime loss against three-time MVP Jokic and the Nuggets was 21 points, nine rebounds, two steals and three blocks.

Not bad for a 20-year-old rookie who was only 10 when Jokic arrived in the NBA. Jokic was even better Sunday with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

“It was great having the experience going against a player like him,” Missi said. “It’s like a dream coming true, to be honest. It’s always good just having to go coast to coast against them and see what I saw on TV when I was younger.”

It’s a dream that has brought Missi from his native Cameroon to the other side of the world. Teammate Dejounte Murray offers some simple advice to Missi as he begins to make a name for himself in the NBA.

“Continue to enjoy each moment, the ups and downs,” Murray said. “Everybody can enjoy the moments when everything is going good. Obviously as a team, we aren’t winning. But as an individual, you see the growth.

“I want him to enjoy his journey. You don’t want him to rush his journey and for him to think he’s got to be great today. But just continue to get better.”

Missi already has come a long way in a short amount of time. But he knows there is still a long way to go. His has 29 NBA games under his belt, just five games less than he played all of last season at Baylor. Rookies often hit a wall around this time of the year.

“You’ve just got to keep playing with a motor,” Missi said.

Missi gets a rematch with Sengun on Thursday when the Pelicans host the Rockets. Then on Friday he’ll face Memphis Grizzlies rookie center Zach Edey, the No. 9 overall pick who is the third favorite to win Rookie of the Year, according to FanDuel.

Green believes the best is yet to come for Missi, who just may have been the biggest steal in this year’s draft. In just two months, Missi turned from a project to a foundation piece.

“He’s just scratching the surface of where we think he can end up,” Green said. “I try not to put a ceiling on these young guys when they come in. They are extremely talented, high character individuals.

“When you have that combination of hard work and talent and come from a good foundation, I don’t know what the ceiling is. I don’t want to put one on him at all because I think the sky is the limit.”

The New Orleans Pelicans’ rookie Yves Missi has been turning heads in the NBA with his impressive play on the court. The 6’9″ forward has been showcasing his athleticism and skill, making a name for himself as one of the top rookies in the league.

Missi’s ability to leap to the head of the rookie class has caught the attention of fans, coaches, and analysts alike. His versatility on both ends of the court, as well as his high basketball IQ, have made him a valuable asset to the Pelicans.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Yves Missi as he continues to make his mark in the NBA. With his potential and talent, the sky’s the limit for this young star. Pelicans fans can look forward to watching him grow and develop into a key player for the team in the years to come. #Pelicans #YvesMissi #NBARookies
