Bailey Zappe to start at quarterback in Week 18 vs. Ravens
The Browns will start their fourth quarterback this season in Week 18, as Bailey Zappe earned the start for the season finale against the Ravens.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski used the week of practices and meetings to come to a determination at quarterback. Dorian Thompson-Robinson will serve as the backup quarterback, as QB Jameis Winston was officially listed as the emergency quarterback.
“There’s a limited number of reps to get guys ready, and that’s just the nature of the beast,” Stefanski said on Jan. 3. “Wanted to see both of those guys with the first group and see how they operate and those type of things. The story or the nature of backup quarterback play is you have to be ready to roll whether you know you’re starting; don’t know you’re starting. You could play number one of the game, somebody needs a shoelace you got to go in there. You got to always be ready at that position. That’s just part of that; it’s dealing with uncertainty. So, I thought both guys handled that part really well. I know, like anybody, you’d love to know what the exact plan is, but that’s life in the big city.”
Zappe will see his first game action since Week 18 of the 2023 season when he was in his second season with the Patriots. In 14 career games — eight of which he’s started — Zappe has completed 192 of 304 passing attempts for 2,053 yards, 11 touchdown passes. He’s also thrown 12 interceptions and been sacked 31 times.
Zappe first joined the Browns in Week 8 when Cleveland signed him off the Chiefs practice squad. While his time with the Browns has been spent running the scout team offense, he’s used the last 10 weeks to learn the Browns’ system and offensive scheme.
“He’s prepared like he’s been a starter. So, he does a good job with his preparation,” offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey said. “He’s got good experience, a strong arm, he’s smart. He’s put himself in position for the potential of the opportunity right there. We’ve got faith in that room. We just have to go out and play at a high level and protect the football and do the right things.”
The Houston Texans have announced that rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe will be making his first career NFL start in Week 18 against the Baltimore Ravens. Zappe, who has been on the practice squad all season, will be stepping in for the injured starting quarterback.Zappe, a standout at Western Kentucky University, has been turning heads in practice with his strong arm and quick decision-making. While he may be inexperienced at the NFL level, the coaching staff has confidence in his abilities to lead the team to victory in this crucial matchup.
Texans fans are excited to see what the young quarterback can do on the field and are hopeful that he can provide a spark to the struggling offense. With nothing to lose in Week 18, Zappe will have the opportunity to showcase his skills and prove that he belongs in the league. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting game as Bailey Zappe takes the reins as the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans.

Bailey Zappe is back! Former Patriots QB to start for his new team in Week 18
Just when you thought it was safe: Zappe Fever has returned. This time, it’s the city of Cleveland that’s been afflicted.
According to the AP’s Tom Whithers, Bailey Zappe is set to start for the Cleveland Browns in the team’s Week 18 game against the Baltimore Ravens. Zappe is the latest quarterback to get the nod amid the Browns’ tricky quarterback situation.
It’s been a roller-coaster year for the former New England Patriots quarterback. Zappe started the year as a veteran lost in the shuffle in the Patriots quarterback battle before being cut at the end of training camp.
After he was waived by New England, Zappe landed on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad. In October, he was scooped up by the QB-needy Browns after a season-ending injury to Deshaun Watson.
After losing Watson, the Browns turned to a combination of Jameis Winston and Dorian Thompson-Robinson at quarterback. But after further injuries at the position, the team now turns to Zappe.
The 25-year-old Zappe is in his third NFL season. Originally a fourth-round pick of the Patriots in 2022, he became a fan favorite after some positive showings following an injury to then-starter Mac Jones.
Zappe remained the backup in 2022 after Jones returned. In 2023, he was waived by the Patriots but returned to the team soon after. When Jones struggled in 2023, Zappe eventually took over the quarterback job to finish out the season.

The Cleveland Browns will get an in-depth look at their quarterback depth chart as the club wraps up the 2024 campaign on Saturday. In the regular-season finale, Cleveland is slated to start veteran Bailey Zappe at quarterback, according to the Associated Press. While Zappe will get the nod out of the gate, head coach Kevin Stefanski noted previously that both Zappe and fellow signal-caller Dorian Thompson-Robinson could play in Week 18, and NFL Media notes that this plan still appears to be intact. So, it could simply be Zappe getting the first crack while Thompson-Robinson follows up.Â
Meanwhile, Jameis Winston, who has started seven games this season, is expected to be the third-string quarterback.Â
Zappe, 25, signed with the Browns active roster in late October in the aftermath of Deshaun Watson suffering a season-ending Achilles injury. Before that, he was working on the practice squad of the Kansas City Chiefs, latching on with the defending champions at the end of the summer following his release from the New England Patriots.
Zappe entered the league as a fourth-round draft choice of the Patriots in 2022 out of Western Kentucky and was able to get some starting experience over his tenure. In all, he’s started eight games in his career, owning a 4-4 record. In 14 total appearances, Zappe has tallied 2,053 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions while completing 63.2% of his throws.Â
Once he officially gets the starting nod in Saturday’s matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, Zappe will be the 40th Browns starting quarterback since 1999.Â
For the Browns, starting Zappe and possibly going with the tandem quarterback attack with Thompson-Robinson on Saturday could be two-fold. First, the team could merely be evaluating the position group as it enters an offseason where they are likely to add to the room in some form or fashion. Knowing the capabilities of both Zappe and Thompson-Robinon (who has started five games for the club over the last two seasons) could give them a leg-up in the evaluation process.Â
Second, the Browns are still in play to earn the No. 1 overall pick at the 2025 NFL Draft but are currently slotted with the No. 3 pick. For them to keep that standing and possibly move up, they’d need to lose, so muddling the quarterback waters by playing both Zappe and Thompson-Robinson could help in that regard as well.Â
Meanwhile, this could further help Cleveland’s Week 18 opponent in the Baltimore Ravens, who are already over a two-touchdown favorite in this matchup. A win on Saturday would secure Baltimore the No. 3 seed in the AFC and the AFC North title.Â
In a surprising turn of events, rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe is set to start for the Cleveland Browns in their Week 18 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. Zappe, who was drafted in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, has impressed coaches and teammates with his performance in practice and is now being given the opportunity to showcase his skills on the field.Additionally, it has been reported that Dorian Thompson-Robinson, the Browns’ backup quarterback, may also see some playing time in the game. Thompson-Robinson has been waiting for his chance to prove himself in the NFL and could provide a different dynamic to the Browns’ offense if called upon.
It will be interesting to see how Zappe and Thompson-Robinson perform in this crucial game, as the Browns look to secure a playoff spot with a win over their division rival. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns will start Bailey Zappe at quarterback for Saturday’s regular-season finale against the Baltimore Ravens, a source confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said after Thursday’s practice that he would first inform the quarterbacks of his plans but that he expected to play both Zappe and Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who has started the past two games.
Zappe, who was originally signed off the Kansas City Chiefs‘ practice squad in the wake of Deshaun Watson‘s season-ending Achilles tear in October, will be the 40th quarterback to start for the Browns since the franchise returned to Cleveland in 1999, the most in the NFL. Zappe has made eight starts in his career, in the 2022 and 2023 seasons as a member of the New England Patriots. The 2022 fourth-round pick has completed 63.2% of his passes for 2,053 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Thompson-Robinson, a 2023 fifth-round pick, struggled in his two starts, completing just 54.3% of his passes for 327 yards and threw three interceptions in the games, both Cleveland losses.
Jameis Winston, who was benched and has been inactive the past two games because of a shoulder injury, will serve as the emergency quarterback.
With a loss in Baltimore, plus wins by the Patriots and Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the Browns would clinch the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
The Browns on Thursday also ruled out five players for Saturday’s game, including Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward, tight end David Njoku and running back Jerome Ford.
The Associated Press first reported the Browns’ plan to start Zappe.
The Cleveland Browns have reportedly made the decision to start quarterback Bailey Zappe in their upcoming game against the Baltimore Ravens. According to sources within the organization, Zappe has impressed coaches and teammates with his performance in practice and is poised to make his first career start in the NFL.Zappe, a standout quarterback at Western Kentucky University, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Browns earlier this year. Despite being relatively unknown coming out of college, Zappe has quickly made a name for himself with his strong arm, accuracy, and football IQ.
While some may view the decision to start Zappe as a bold move, the Browns are confident in his abilities and believe he gives them the best chance to win. With veteran quarterback Baker Mayfield dealing with injury issues, Zappe will have the opportunity to prove himself on the big stage against a tough Ravens defense.

Bailey Zappe to start at QB for Browns on Saturday
It’s time to add another name to the long list of Browns starting quarterbacks since the franchise returned to existence in 1999.
Tom Withers of the Associated Press had the initial report that Bailey Zappe will get his first start for the team against the Ravens on Saturday. Several others have since confirmed the report that Zappe will be the 40th quarterback to start a game for the team since its return.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Jameis Winston have started games since Deshaun Watson’s season-ending injury, but both have been limited in practice this week and they have been limited in their productivity when they have been on the field.
Zappe was signed off the Chiefs’ practice squad in October and has not appeared in any games. He started eight games for the Patriots the last two seasons and is 192-of-304 for 2,053 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 14 overall appearances.
