ZIM vs AFG 2024/25, Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan 2nd Test, Day 2, Bulawayo Match Report, January 02 – 06, 2025

    Zimbabwe 6 for 0 (Gumbie 4*, Curran 1*) trail Afghanistan 157 (Rashid 25, Raza 3-30, Nyamhuri 3-42, Muzarabani 2-56) by 151 runs

It had taken Zimbabwe 197 overs and over two days to take ten Afghanistan wickets in the opening Test. A few days later, at the same venue, Zimbabwe required just 44.3 overs and less than two sessions to bowl Afghanistan out for 157, and take early control of the second Test in Bulawayo.

Newman Nyamhuri and Sikandar Raza picked three wickets apiece while Blessing Muzarabani got two as none of the Afghanistan batters managed to build on starts. In reply, the Zimbabwe openers Ben Curran and Joylord Gumbie had a tricky three overs to face which they eventually survived.

The conditions were very different at the start of the opening day, with persistent rain greeting the two teams, and the toss delayed by close to four hours.

When the conditions improved, Craig Ervine had no hesitation in bowling first on what his opposite number Hashmatullah Shahidi described as a “spicy pitch”. Zimbabwe made two changes to their playing XI from the first Test, bringing in Richard Ngarava and Raza, while Afghanistan made five changes to their side. That included them handing Test debuts to Fareed Ahmad, Riaz Hassan and Ismat Alam.

The Bulawayo pitch had a green tinge to it, but Muzarabani and Ngarava failed to extract much movement largely due to them being on the shorter side. The Afghanistan openers Abdul Malik and Riaz largely looked unhurried, and managed just 25 runs in the first ten overs.

But a moment of brilliance in the field gave the hosts the opening. Riaz pushed a full delivery from Ngarava to the right of point, and set off for a single, only to be sent back by Malik quite late. Riaz, who was almost halfway down the pitch, scurried back, but Bennett sprinted to his right, picked up the ball with one hand, and in one swift motion smashed the stumps at the striker’s end to catch the batter short.

In the next over, Nyamhuri got a short-of-a-length ball to rear up sharply, thus catching Malik’s gloves through to the wicketkeeper.

Shahidi and Rahmat Shah, who had stitched a record stand in the opening Test, then looked to arrest the slide. Shahidi began with a fierce cut off Muzarabani over backward point while Rahmat also got off the mark with a four, albeit a streaky one past the wicketkeeper’s left.

Rahmat then struck two more fours off Muzarabani, but got a reprieve when he got a thick outside edge off Ngarava to Dion Myers, who spilled a relatively comfortable catch at gully. Thus, Shahidi and Rahmat moved to lunch unbeaten.

But it did not take Zimbabwe long to strike after the break, with 18-year-old Nyamhuri once again getting into the act by squaring Shahidi up, and trapping him bang in front of the stumps for 13. Afsar Zazai, another centurion from the first Test, then came in and immediately found his bearings.

But it was Raza’s introduction into the attack which brought about Afghanistan’s downfall. He varied his pace brilliantly, bowled wicket-to-wicket lines, and had both Rahmat and Zazai second-guessing. Nyamhuri also stuck to a plan, and induced multiple outside edges before Raza orchestrated a collapse.

Rahmat, unable to get Raza away, tried to unsettle him by trying a cheeky lap sweep. But Raza fired the ball in on middle, and Rahmat missed it to see his leg stump pegged back. Ngarava then got rid of Zazai with a snorter before Raza cleaned debutant Alam up with a yorker as Afghanistan slipped from 81 for 3 to 84 for 6 in the space of ten balls.

Rashid Khan unfurled a number of strokes as soon as he walked in by spanking Raza for three back-to-back cover drives. Shahidullah also got his first boundary away via a wristy flick. Muzarabani, who was wayward all day, finally got the ball to land on a channel outside off and induced a thin edge off Shahidullah’s blade through to the wicketkeeper. Rashid then failed to keep a short and wide delivery off Muzarabani down, with deep point taking an easy catch.

When Raza cleaned Yamin Ahmadzai up for his third wicket, the end was nigh for the visitors. But Zia-ur-Rehman and Fareed added a run-a-ball 27 for the final wicket, with debutant Fareed smashing a four and a six in his 19-ball 17 to take Afghanistan past 150.

The Zimbabwe openers survived a tricky 20-minute burst from Afghanistan, and will want to wipe off the deficit early on day two. Rain and a wet outfield allowed only 47.3 overs to be bowled on the opening day, but the Test has already moved on at a rapid pace.

    Afghanistan 515 for 3 (Rahmat 234, Shahidi 179*, Muzarabani 1-52) trail Zimbabwe 586 by 71 runs

Rain had the final say on the fourth day in Bulawayo as only 31 overs were possible with the first of two Tests between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan headed to a draw. Zimbabwe managed to end the mammoth 364-run third-wicket partnership between Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi – both of whom batted the entire third day – with the former falling on 234. He added just three runs to his overnight score before left-arm quick Newman Nyamhuri, on debut, managed to have him caught at gully.

Shahidi was still batting on 179 while Afsar Zazai was in sights of his maiden Test half-century, finishing unbeaten on 46 as the pair added an unbroken 87 for the fourth wicket.

Rahmat fell in the second over of the day, when he drove at one far away from his body and edged it to Ben Curran after adding just three to his overnight tally. Nyamhuri bowled it from around the stumps and floated it wide; Rahmat could not resist. That ended what is the eighth-highest third-wicket partnership in men’s Tests.

Both Nyamhuri and Blessing Muzarabani got seam movement – and at times even extra bounce – but Shahidi and new batter Afsar Zazai remained watchful. Each time the line was wide, neither batter shied away from lofting or slashing at the ball. Shahidi reached 150 in the 131st over, when he clipped Nyamhuri wide of fine leg. Largely, both quicks kept it tight.

The first boundary of the day came only in the 137th over. Trevor Gwandu angled one across to Shahidi, who played a lovely drive to bisect cover and mid-off. Thereafter, it was Zazai who kept finding the boundary, while Shahidi looked much calmer at the other end.

Three overs later, Zazai hit his first boundary through midwicket when Sean Williams pitched one short. In the 141st over, Zazai threw his bat at a full and wide one outside off from Gwandu, only for the ball to fly for four over gully. After two overs, Zazai cut Gwandu for another boundary just after his partnership with Shahidi had crossed fifty.

Zazai picked up his only six by pulling Williams over square leg. Sensing he was picking up pace, Zimbabwe slowed things down through Muzarabani, Brandon Mavuta and Brian Bennett. Afghanistan managed only 14 runs from the next seven overs, and that ended the morning session.

Shahidi drove the second delivery after lunch for four to deep extra cover, but only two overs were possible in the afternoon. Seeing ominous grey clouds form, the umpires stopped play at 12:53pm sensing a heavy downpour, which arrived soon.

The rain eased an hour later with the ground staff starting to peel the covers off. But that effort proved futile with another downpour starting. That spell of rain was relentless and stumps were called at 4:35pm.

ZIM vs AFG 2024/25: Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan 1st Test, Day 5, Bulawayo Match Report

In a thrilling conclusion to the 1st Test between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in Bulawayo, the match ended in a draw on Day 5 after both teams put up a valiant fight.

Afghanistan, starting the day at 180/3, needed 118 runs to win with seven wickets in hand. However, Zimbabwe’s bowlers came out firing on all cylinders and managed to take quick wickets early in the day.

The turning point came when Afghanistan’s top-order collapsed, losing three quick wickets for just 20 runs. But the lower order batsmen showed great resilience and determination, with Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi putting up a brilliant partnership to steer their team towards a draw.

In the end, Afghanistan finished the day at 310/7, with Rashid Khan scoring a magnificent century and Mohammad Nabi providing solid support with a half-century.

Zimbabwe’s bowlers put up a spirited effort throughout the match, with Blessing Muzarabani and Sean Williams taking crucial wickets to keep the pressure on Afghanistan.

Overall, it was a closely fought contest between the two teams, with both showing great skill and determination. The match ended in a draw, but it was a thrilling spectacle for the fans at Bulawayo.

The series is now level at 0-0, with the 2nd Test scheduled to take place in Harare. Stay tuned for more exciting cricket action between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in the coming days.

Oldest Test Centurions, Full List: Craig Ervine Becomes Third-Oldest To Make A Hundred In 21st Century | ZIM V AFG 2024/25

    Oldest Test centurions

Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine became the third-oldest player to hit a Test hundred in the 21st century during the Boxing Day Test against Afghanistan in Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe are playing Afghanistan in a two-Test series at home. The ongoing Test in Bulawayo is only their second of the year. They won the toss and chose to bat first and have broken multiple records in the process of putting up a mammoth score.

Ben Curran, making his Test debut, scored a quickfire 68 off 74 balls while opening the batting, making it the sixth-quickest fifty-plus score by an opener on Test debut. The veteran Sean Williams then took over, coming in to bat at No.4, and struck a 154 at a strike rate of 88.50, hitting 10 fours and three sixes.

That wasn’t enough punishment for Afghanistan bowlers as Ervine walked in to bat with the score reading 220-4 and piled on the agony. He added 163 for the fifth wicket in partnership with Williams, before adding 82 with Brian Bennet for the sixth wicket. Ervine was dismissed at the score of 465-6, having made 104 himself.

This was his fourth Test ton, and at the age of 39 years and 130 days, he became the third-oldest after Misbah-ul-Haq and Shivnarine Chanderpaul to score a Test hundred in the 21st century. Overall, Misbah and Chanderpaul have scored a combined eight hundreds aged more than what Ervine was aged at the time of scoring this century. Seven of those eight belong to Misbah, who also has five hundreds beyond the age of 40, and only one belongs to Chanderpaul.

Ervine’s partner-in-crime, Sean Williams also creeped up on this list thanks to his 154. Currently aged 38 years and 92 days, Williams has become the third-oldest to score 150 or more in a Test in the 21st century. Younis Khan has two 150-plus scores aged more than this, while Chanderpaul has one.

The oldest player ever to score a Test century is England’s Jack Hobbs, who made 142 against Australia aged 46 years and 82 days, way back in 1929.
