  • Manchester United vs Brighton LIVE: Premier League team news and line-ups as Joshua Zirkzee handed start

Manchester United host Brighton at Old Trafford in the Premier League today, with Ruben Amorim’s side looking to build on the midweek win over Southampton, having shown a “different” side to them against Liverpool and Arsenal.

United performed poorly for much of the match against the Saints, but a dramatic turnaround led by Amad Diallo gave them three points that some would consider undeserved, and Amorim is ready to experience more highs and lows from their “rollercoaster season”.

And the nature of the performance will likely have worried Amorim, particularly as they now welcome a Brighton side who have established themselves as tricky opponents.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side sit in ninth, five points above United, and though their hunt for European football has faltered in recent weeks, the Seagulls will be confident of taking a result home from Manchester.

Manchester United are hopeful of holding off competition for Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres to secure a deal in the summer.

Arsenal are understood to have raised the striker in discussions over a badly-needed forward signing for January, having brought forward plans from the summer after the ACL injury suffered by Gabriel Jesus.

Mikel Arteta this week admitted they are looking, and Gyokeres has been raised along with options such as Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Brighton’s Evan Ferguson. Arsenal have not seriously pursued PSG’s Randal Kolo Muani yet this window.

Manchester United host Newcastle United in the Premier League this evening, with the home side desperate for three points as they look to rise from 14th in the table.

Ruben Amorim’s team has fallen to embarrassing defeats to Bournemouth and Wolves over the last two matches, and the Portuguese has just two wins in the league so far during his tenure. And United face a Newcastle side who have found form in recent weeks, with consecutive 4-0 wins followed by a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa last time out.

After a mixed start to the season, the Magpies find themselves in seventh ahead of kick-off, with the potential to move into fifth if they grab three points tonight. And with the recent form of both sides, Newcastle have rarely had a better chance to earn a first league win at Old Trafford since 2013. Follow all the latest updates from Old Trafford below:

    54’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

Joelinton wins a free-kick and Newcastle squander the chance to trouble Onana – haven’t really had the fluency in their play over the last 15 minutes either side of the interval.

Hojlund escapes his man in the box and tees up an Amad shot but Tonali makes the block.

More reason for optimism for the home fans since the restart but no big chances for them and nothing for Dubravka to worry about.

Antony, Rashford and Garnacho are all on the bench for United.

    Karl Matchett30 December 2024 21:14

    50’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

The home team have played far more aggressively and on the front foot since the restart. A good cross from Mazraoui on the right sees Schar forced into an awkward clearance behind for a corner under pressure. Eriksen’s corner goes through everyone – could have been a tap-in if a red shirt was in place. Newcastle need to heed the warnings here.

    Karl Matchett30 December 2024 21:10

    46′ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

Back underway and no further changes but both managers probably had plenty to say. Eddie Howe may have had a few words on concentration and not letting things drift, after that final five minutes of the first half.

Man Utd fans boo Zirkzee as striker subbed off early against Newcastle

Manchester United fans booed and jeered their own player on Monday night, as Joshua Zirkzee bore the brunt of supporters’ displeasure during a dismal first half against Newcastle United.

The Red Devils had been thoroughly outplayed and were 2-0 down on home soil to the Magpies, with another strike ruled out for offside and Newcastle also striking the woodwork in a woefully one-sided first half.

That prompted Ruben Amorim to turn to his subs bench after just 32 minutes, with Zirkzee replaced by Kobbie Mainoo in an attempt to beef up the centre of the pitch, where the hosts had been second best by a long distance.

Zirkzee immediately faced extremely loud cheers at the decision to remove him, followed by an equally loud round of boos as he left the pitch. The Dutch attacker didn’t take his place to sit on the bench, but immediately appeared to don a coat and depart towards the tunnel – only to reappear a few minutes later.

During his half-hour or so on the pitch, Zirkzee managed just 14 touches of the ball, completed three passes and won one free-kick, but had no impact in terms of creating or taking shots.

    Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:59

HT – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

One late chance for United – Mainoo frees Casemiro in the box but his first-time shot is curled well wide. He had time there, not a great effort. Let-off for Newcastle after Schar gave the ball away – but the whistle goes and it’s 2-0 to the visitors at the interval.

Half time, Newcastle well in control. Another loud chorus of boos from the home fans as the whistle goes.

Richard Jolly’s latest: “A dreadful first half for Manchester United. The mixture of cheers and boos when Joshua Zirkzee was hauled off after half an hour are a sign of what the crowd think of him. It is hard to see how he can come back from that, or how United can come back in this game.”

    Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:49

    45’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

Two shots and two touches in the box for Man United in this first half. They simply haven’t been at it in the slightest.

    Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:46

    40’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

Well the good news for Manchester United is that with five minutes to go until half time, they are 2-0 down.

And yes, that’s good news – it should be three at a minimum, it could easily be five, and they’ll soon have 15 minutes to sort things out a bit.

Ruben Amorim has a massive job on his hands to get them back in the game – Eddie Howe must want more of the same. They are swarming United at will, until about five minutes ago.

    Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:43

    36’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

Richard Jolly’s scathing and accurate assessment of the hosts:

“Utter dominance from Newcastle, utterly awful from Manchester United. Ruben Amorim’s team are being overrun in midfield – no surprise when it is Casemiro and Christian Eriksen against Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton – and their five defenders are struggling to defend. Neither goal reflected well on Lisandro Martinez, who isn’t exactly looking an inspired choice to captain the team in Bruno Fernandes’ absence. Newcastle could score six or seven here.”

    Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:37

    34’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

Joshua Zirkzee has just been given whatever the absolute rock bottom opposite is to a standing ovation – the most vicious, vociferous booing and jeering by his own supporters as he’s subbed off for Kobbie Mainoo.

This Man United team is “the absolute worst pound for pound football team in the country, bar none,” says Gary Neville.

Moments later Hojlund is played in for a first sight of goal at last and can only clip his shot past the far post.

    Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:35

    30’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

The ball’s in the net again – but the offside flag is up this time. We’ve seen this kind of thing before given: basically a Schar shot is deflected into his path by a United defender, so Isak – way offside in normal terms – plays on and absolutely blams it top corner. But the flag is up and the ref sides with his assistant.

One minute later and Newcastle are so close to a brilliant third, passing straight through United’s back three with some amazing one-touch football – Tonali gets past Onana but thunders a shot onto the post from close-range. Amorim isn’t waiting around, he’s making a sub soon.

    United have been utterly woeful.

‘That is brutal’ – Man United’s £36m signing Joshua Zirkzee humiliatingly hauled off after 30 minutes and booed by own fans

Joshua Zirkzee was sarcastically cheered off by Manchester United fans when he was substituted in the first half against Newcastle.

The Dutch forward started the match but was brought off for Kobbie Mainoo on 33 minutes with the Magpies 2-0 up.

Zirkzee walked up to the United bench and grabbed a coat before walking along the side of the pitch.

Fans in the stands at Old Trafford could be heard jeering the 23-year-old as he made his way off the pitch before he disappeared down the tunnel.

This was momentarily though as Zirkzee returned to the dugout as United played the rest of the first half in need of a response.

Red Devils legend Gary Neville said on commentary for Sky Sports: “I actually feel sorry for him, I really do.

    MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

“I know that he’s earning a lot of money, but there’s a human being in there that’s basically being cheered off by his own fans.

“That is brutal. I’ve not seen that too many times at Old Trafford in the 43 years I’ve been coming here.”

He added: “He’s had enough and I actually don’t blame him, [it’s] a massive embarrassment.

“I hope some of the fans down there give him a little something. He hasn’t played well let’s be clear, they’ve all been absolutely awful.”

Neville also called United the ‘worst pound-for-pound team in the country’ as their issues were on show once again.

Alexander Isak opened the scoring for Newcastle with an unmarked header with only four minutes on the clock.

Joelinton doubled the visitors’ lead later in the half, with Sandro Tonali coming so close to a third but he could only hit the post.

United fans were heard booing at the half-time whistle following an opening 45 in which they were way off the pace.

Defeat would be Ruben Amorim’s sixth from 11 matches since he became head coach in November.

It would also extended United’s losing streak to four across all competitions as the problems continue to mount.

Amorim may call upon Marcus Rashford in the second half if needed after amid his return to the squad from a four-match absence.

Manchester United’s latest signing Joshua Zirkzee had a rough start to his career at Old Trafford as he was humiliatingly hauled off after just 30 minutes in his debut match. The £36m striker was met with boos from his own fans as he struggled to make an impact on the game.

Many fans took to social media to express their disappointment in Zirkzee’s performance, with some even calling for him to be dropped from the team altogether. The young striker will no doubt be feeling the pressure to prove his worth to the club and its supporters after such a brutal debut.

Only time will tell if Zirkzee can bounce back from this setback and show his true potential on the pitch. But for now, it seems that his first taste of Premier League football has been anything but sweet.

The match had been just his seventh Premier League start of the campaign, with Rasmus Hojlund typically preferred as the starting No9, with the Dutch 23-year-old scoring three times in what is now just under 700 league minutes of action.

Amorim’s early sub didn’t have much impact as Newcastle continued to have the better chances for the first half and still led 2-0 at the break.

At the time of Zirkzee’s substitution, former player Gary Neville – speaking on Sky Sports – called this version of Man United “the absolute worst pound for pound football team in the country, bar none.”

Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher called Lisandro Martinez, captain for the night in the absence of Bruno Fernandes, “awful” in his half-time assessment.

In a shocking turn of events, Manchester United fans booed young striker Joshua Zirkzee off the pitch as he was subbed off before half time in their match against Newcastle. The 20-year-old striker, who was making his first start for the club, failed to make an impact on the game and was ultimately replaced by a more experienced player.

The fans’ reaction to Zirkzee’s performance has sparked a heated debate among supporters, with many questioning the decision to start him in such an important match. Some believe that the booing was uncalled for and unsupportive of a young player still finding his footing in the team, while others argue that the expectations at a club like Manchester United are high and that poor performances should not be tolerated.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue, it is clear that Zirkzee will need to work hard to win back the support of the fans and prove himself as a valuable asset to the team. Only time will tell if he can rise to the challenge and show his true potential on the pitch.

Ruben Amorim hauls off Joshua Zirkzee after 33 minutes to huge cheers as Man Utd as Neville says ‘that is brutal’ – The Sun

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim made a bold move during their latest match against fierce rivals Liverpool, substituting young striker Joshua Zirkzee after just 33 minutes of play. The decision was met with a mix of shock and applause from the crowd, with many fans cheering the manager’s brave call.

Former United player and current pundit Gary Neville was quick to react to the substitution, calling it “brutal” but also acknowledging the manager’s courage in making such a bold move. Zirkzee, who had struggled to make an impact in the game, was replaced by veteran forward Marcus Rashford, who went on to score a crucial goal in the match.

The decision to haul off Zirkzee early in the game paid off for Amorim, as Rashford’s goal helped United secure a vital win against their rivals. The manager’s willingness to make tough decisions and shake things up in the team shows his determination to lead United to success, and fans will be eagerly watching to see what other surprises he has in store.

Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee was hooked off after just 32 minutes against Newcastle United.

Fans picked up on what Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee did after storming down the tunnel when brutally substituted just 32 minutes into the game against Newcastle.

United were looking to end a wretched 2024 with a victory at Old Trafford but found themselves 2-0 down after 20 minutes, with both Alexander Isak and Joelinton finding the net for the visitors.

The Red Devils were completely outplayed by the Magpies and after being destroyed for 30 minutes, Ruben Amorim made a decision to make an early change.

Kobbie Mainoo got changed into his kit and warmed up on the touchline before it was announced that he would be replacing Zirkzee, who had lined up on the left.

The summer signing’s withdrawal was met with sarcastic cheers and after a brief handshake with Amorim, the dejected Dutchman grabbed his coat and jogged down the tunnel.

A few minutes later and with the game continuing, the former Bayern Munich man did return to take his place on the bench.

Having slammed the fans’ reaction to Zirkzee going off on commentary for Sky Sports, former United skipper Gary Neville suggested that Zirkzee had been told by a member of staff to get back to the dugout – finding it hard to believe he had merely ran down the tunnel “for a lucozade”.

    Neville expresses sympathy for Zirkzee

Zirkzee has struggled since signing for United in a £36.5 million fee, scoring just four goals in 25 appearances. United supporters quickly ran out of patience with him after a series of frustrating displays but Neville did not like seeing what happened to him.

“I actually feel sorry for Joshua Zirkzee,” Neville said on Sky Sports.

“He was bought for big money but there is a human being in there.”

“He is essentially being cheered off by his own fans. He’s has not been good but they’ve all been poor.”

Fans were quick to notice the reaction of Joshua Zirkzee after storming down the tunnel following a brutal substitution from Ruben Amorim in a recent match. The young forward, who plays for Manchester United, was visibly frustrated as he made his way off the pitch, but what happened next caught everyone’s attention.

As Zirkzee reached the tunnel, he was seen taking a deep breath and shaking his head in disappointment. However, instead of disappearing into the dressing room, he stopped and turned back towards the pitch. Fans watched in awe as he stood there for a moment, seemingly gathering his thoughts before finally walking off.

This small gesture did not go unnoticed by supporters, who praised Zirkzee for showing maturity and resilience in the face of adversity. Many took to social media to commend the player for his professionalism and determination, even in a difficult moment.

It’s clear that Joshua Zirkzee’s passion for the game and his commitment to his team shine through, even in the toughest of times. This display of character will undoubtedly endear him to fans even more, and prove that he is a player worth watching in the future.

Joshua Zirkzee booed by Man Utd fans and storms down tunnel in Newcastle clash

Joshua Zirkzee suffered a nightmare display for Manchester United after being hauled off on barely 30 minutes of play against Newcastle on Monday evening.

With United 2-0 down after 19 minutes at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim took drastic action to try get his side back into the contest.

And that meant taking off Zirkzee, who was booed by United fans as he made his way off the pitch.

The Netherlands international did not hang around to hear the reception, making his way down the tunnel before being spotted with his coat on.

Kobbie Mainoo was brought on in Zirkzee’s spot, who was guilty of not tracking back enough with glaring holes in United’s midfield.

Zirkzee did eventually return to sit on the bench while United legend Gary Neville offered some sympathy to the forward.

A dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester City failed to spark any sort of momentum, losing days after to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.

The Red Devils were then thrashed 3-0 at home by Old Trafford before losing to Wolves, who had just replaced Gary O’Neil with Vitor Pereira.

With the January transfer window set to open in two days, it remains to be seen whether Amorim will be backed financially.

The Portuguese coach has arrived with a very distinct style of football that is almost at odds with his predecessor Erik ten Hag.

However, with results turning south so quickly, even Amorim has admitted he might already be on borrowed time.

In a shocking turn of events during the Newcastle vs. Manchester United match, young striker Joshua Zirkzee was booed by Man Utd fans and stormed down the tunnel in frustration.

The 20-year-old had been struggling to make an impact on the game, missing several key chances in front of goal. As the frustration grew among the fans, Zirkzee was met with a chorus of boos every time he touched the ball.

Unable to handle the pressure, Zirkzee had had enough and decided to storm down the tunnel before the final whistle blew. This move only further angered the fans, who felt he was showing a lack of commitment to the team.

The incident has left many questioning Zirkzee’s future at the club and whether he will be able to bounce back from this disappointing performance. Only time will tell if he can regain the trust and support of the fans.

Manchester United star Joshua Zirkzee has reportedly split up with his long-time partner.

Zirkzee, 23, has endured a difficult time at Old Trafford since joining the club from Bologna for £36.5million in the summer.

The forward scored on his debut against Fulham, but has struggled to kick on, with the Dutchman unable to nail down a consistent starting place.

Zirkzee has netted just four times in 25 games and United boss Ruben Amorim has regularly preferred Rasmus Hojlund in attack.

And now the 23-year-old has suffered a fresh blow, according to reports, with GSM claiming that Zirkzee has split with his girlfriend, Celina Jada Kerr.

The report claims the pair were known to be ‘longtime sweethearts’ from Zirkzee’s time at Bayern Munich, who he joined as a 16-year-old.

Zirkzee had been in a relationship with German model and influencer Celina Jada Kerr

Kerr is a model and influencer from Germany who graduated in Berlin with a degree in Media and Communication Management.

She had been by Zirkzee’s side during his time with the German giants and at Bologna, while the Dutchman also enjoyed loan spells with Parma and Anderlecht in his formative years in the game.

They had generally kept their personal lives private on social media, but were once seen embracing on a video shoot with JD Sports.

During the shoot, the couple wore unisex JD Sports tracksuits, with Kerr proudly sharing this on her Instagram feed.

However, questions began to surface about her relationship with Zirkzee when she wasn’t seen around the forward in Manchester following his move.

There were similarly eyebrows raised when neither of them shared pictures of each other during the summer.

The report goes onto add that Zirkzee and Kerr have now unfollowed each other on social media.

The model, who has more than 100,000 followers on Instagram, has also begun to delete posts of the couple, including the aforementioned JD Sports shoot.

Zirkzee was substituted after 54 minutes during the Red Devils’ disastrous 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth on Sunday, which came after he had scored off the bench against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup last Thursday.

The 23-year-old, who has started just 10 times for United, returns to action on Boxing Day when Amorim’s side take on Wolves at Molineux.

Manchester United star Joshua Zirkzee has reportedly split with his long-term model girlfriend, just six months after making the move to England in a £36.5 million deal.

The 20-year-old striker, who joined the Red Devils from Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window, had been in a relationship with Dutch model Sofia van Hagen for several years. However, it seems their romance has come to an end following Zirkzee’s move to Manchester.

According to sources close to the couple, the distance and demands of Zirkzee’s new career at one of the biggest clubs in the world played a significant role in their decision to part ways. Despite the breakup, both Zirkzee and van Hagen are said to be focused on their respective careers and wish each other the best moving forward.

Fans of the young footballer have expressed their support for him during this difficult time, with many hoping that he can continue to excel on the pitch despite the personal setback. As Zirkzee adjusts to life in England and continues to make a name for himself at Manchester United, only time will tell how this breakup will impact his performance on the field.
