The Bears have had an interesting season. Baylor holds a 2-4 record against ranked opponents, opening the year with a 38-point loss to Gonzaga. Wins over Arkansas and St. Johns stabilized their non conference slate.
Road losses to Iowa State and Arizona are their blemishes in conference play, but the Bears have 20+ point wins over Utah and Cincinnati on their ledger as well.
The Bears are an excellent offensive rebounding team, pulling down 13.7 per game. They couple that with being effective in the paint on offense, scoring about 37 points per game down low.
Baylor pairs that with several sharpshooters, and as a team the Bears are shooting 36.4% from 3-point range.
Bears to Know
Baylor has five players averaging double-figures in scoring this season, led by Miami transfer Norchad Omier at 15.5 points per game. Omier, a 6-7 wing whose career began at Arkansas State, is also bringing in 10.2 rebounds per game, tied for first in the Big 12 with Kansas’ Hunter Dickinson. Omier also leads the Bears with 17 blocked shots this season.
Freshman guard VJ Edgecombe looks to be a one-and-done in college, as he’s projected as a top 10 lottery pick by most major NBA prospect evaluators. Edgecombe is second on Baylor in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game, while also pulling down 5.7 rebounds.
Center Josh Ojianwuna has stepped into a starting role this year and is performing well, averaging 8.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Robert Wright is having an excellent first campaign, averaging 12.4 points and 4.6 assists per game as a facilitator off the bench.
How TCU Can Win
TCU has to play their best basketball of the season, similar to how they played in the first half against BYU. Defensively, the Frogs need to be aggressive on the perimeter closing out on shooters, and they need to get a body on Omier when shots go up.
TCU’s interior defense also needs to be ready to help, and the weak side rotations need to be on time, something that wasn’t the case against Utah.
Offensively, the ball can’t get stuck. TCU needs to play aggressively to create open shots.
All in all, this is a tough challenge for the Frogs, who are looking to get back to .500 in Big 12 play this season.
Prediction: Baylor 78, TCU 65
