Three dogs, one shot, found in Davison Cemetery, are recovering | News

DAVISON, Mich. (WJRT) – Three dogs are safe and recovering after being found abandoned in Davison Township, one suffering from a gunshot wound.

John Forys, a local resident, made the discovery Saturday evening, while he was walking his dogs near the Davison Cemetery.

Forys said he heard the barks getting louder and followed the sound to find three puppies peering out from behind a tree.

“I thought, ‘I have to get these dogs out of here;’ I didn’t know what was going to happen,” he recalled.

Upon returning home, Forys and his wife, Kay, feared for the puppies’ survival. “It was a bloody mess there,” John said. “The dogs were just sitting there, and I knew something was wrong.”

The couple contacted the Davison Township Police and Child’s Veterinary Clinic for assistance.

Officer Spencer Zecchini was among the responders. “I have three dogs of my own, so it hits me on a personal level,” he said. “Seeing the dogs out there in the cold, it breaks your heart.”

Zecchini noted that the puppies were not super aggressive but needed a rapport built to feel safe.

Dr. Delmar Childs of Child’s Veterinary Clinic reported that the puppies—named Oscar, Bruce, and KC—were in poor condition upon arrival.

Bruce, who had a gunshot wound to his front leg, required emergency surgery.

“He’s doing great,” Dr. Childs said, noting that the bullet remains in Bruce’s leg until he is strong enough for further surgery, if needed.

The other two puppies had minor injuries but were cold and hungry.

“They were eating whatever they could find—plastic bags, cigarette butts, rocks,” said Cindy Childs. “We have no idea how long they had been out there, but fortunately, John and Kay found them before it got too cold.”

After receiving vaccinations, food, and water, the seven-month-old dogs are now on the path to recovery.

“Whoever adopts them will need a patient heart, but they are happy and very loving dogs,” Dr. Childs added.

Community members have rallied to support the puppies, donating money for toys and blankets. “It really restores your faith in humanity,” said Dr. Childs.

For those interested in adopting, the veterinary clinic announced that Purina has donated a 25-pound bag of dog food for each puppy, and Zoetis will provide six months of medication.

As for the ongoing investigation, police continue to seek information about the puppies’ abandonment.

Officer Zecchini says police still don’t know who abandoned the dogs, or who owns the dogs currently.

The Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office explained they’re reviewing the case details.

In the words of Cindy Childs, “It was a whole bunch of people involved. It wasn’t just us; it was a community effort.”
