Two Winter Systems to Impact MD

(Updated: Thursday, 10:00 PM) by Chief Meteorologist Gerard Jebaily

The Fox 45 Weather Authority has issued a *WEATHER ALERT* for Friday and again on Monday for hazardous winter weather.

Snow will become likely as each system arrives and hazardous road conditions are expected during each passing storm.

The first system arriving on Friday will bring some rain showers in the afternoon which could change over to snow as temperatures fall later in the evening. Winter weather advisories have been issued.

The snow could fall heavy enough in some areas to overcome the above freezing road temperatures and still lead to slushy accumulations especially on bridges and overpasses.

Expect the first part of the day to be dry and chilly but temperatures warming to the low 40s. But the afternoon and evening could be hazardous as the rain changing to snow could very quickly lower visibility and make roads slick.

Snow totals on Friday evening will only be a heavy dusting to around an inch but could accumulate quickly under the heavier showers, covering some roads and leading to some hazardous driving conditions.
Any left over snow or wet spots left over could freeze as temperatures drop on Friday night leading to slick spots.

The second winter storm is developing far out in the Pacific and will not arrive until Monday.

As the storm develops it will track across the eastern half of the US bringing many impacts from the central plains to the east coast.

Snow totals are difficult to pinpoint this far in advance as the storm is still several days away and forecast models are highly variable but significant snow accumulations do appear likely for most of the state

There is a high chance of accumulating snow from Monday’s winter storm. Make plans to avoid travel as much as possible as roads will likely be very hazardous.

All forecast models in range of this storm indicate significant snowfall but the reliability of any of these is still very low until the system can move on land and be better sampled by ground measuring stations and weather balloons to help provide valuable information about the storm’s expected strength and track.

While Friday and Monday are Weather Alert Days. Saturday looks cold and breezy for the Ravens game but dry. Temperatures are expected to take a further dip into next week behind Monday’s winter storm.
