Under All-America Game: Florida Gators game notes & more
-This is the first time juniors are playing in the game. In past years, it was a true senior showcase and numerous players announced their commitments at the game. But that was before the early signing period came to be in December. With the majority of top players now signing in December and enrolling in January, attracting top senior talent to these all-star games became more of a challenge. Now, it features big-name juniors to counteract that.
-Griffin, the 4-star Florida Gators commit from Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit, is one of two junior signal callers in the game. Derek Zammit of New Jersey is the other.
-Brown, Jackson, Montgomery, Wiggins and Griffin are on “Team Icon” while Louis is on the “Team Unstoppable” roster.
-Griffin will split “Team Icon” reps with 5-star Alabama QB signee Keelon Russell. The team’s third QB, Colorado signee Julian Lewis, has opted to not participate after dealing with a hand injury at the end of his season. So it’s conceivable Griffin could see a good bit of action in Thursday’s game. Russell has by most accounts been the clear top quarterback in practices this week. He was at one time a major Gators target.
-Brown and Montgomery each have had solid weeks: Wrote On3’s Charles Power of Brown: “Florida WR signee Vernell Brown III showed fluid route running ability as well as natural ball skills during the routes-on-air and 7-on-7 periods during Tuesday afternoon’s practice. He’s one of the more polished wideouts in attendance.” Jackson and Wiggins also caught the eye of Powers and On3 National Scout Cody Bellaire at times during the week.
-This will be Jackson’s first game action since early in the fall. He sustained a hamstring injury during his senior season and missed the bulk of the year. But he’s been 100 percent for awhile and was eager to participate this week.
-Of Florida’s 2025 signees in the game, all but Louis will enroll at Florida in January.
-Spec Martin Stadium was a primary filming location for the 1998 movie The Waterboy starring Adam Sandler. Florida Gators great James Bates had a notable scene in the film.
