LEWISTON, Maine (WGME) — Maine State Police are addressing concerns about a video showing a handler using a leash to lift a K-9 off the ground during a raid in Lewiston.
On Sunday, authorities raided an apartment at 100 College Street in Lewiston. The Maine State Police Tactical Team assisted the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
Police recovered more than three pounds of marijuana and $3,400 in suspected drug money from the apartment on College Street. They detained eight teenagers, ranging from 15 to 19 years old, and eventually released them.
A video circulating on social media and provided to CBS13 shows a Maine State Police K-9 handler outside the building during the raid using a leash to swing a dog around them.
Multiple viewers reached out to CBS13 with concerns about the treatment of the dog.
According to Maine State Police, handlers must always be in control of their K-9 for the safety of everyone involved and keep the K-9 focused on their role.
“In this specific circumstance, the handler was positioned outside of the apartment and had attempted multiple times verbally to correct the K9 to remain in a stay position. The video captures the K9 breaking his position and move in the direction of another person nearby. The handler then utilized the leash to pull the dog back to a stay position by his side. Further complicating this situation was a large dog within the apartment of interest,” Shannon Moss, the Public Information Officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in a statement to CBS13.
Moss says the handler and K-9 have been a team for seven years.
She went on to say that the “dog is perfectly fine.”
In a recent video that has surfaced, a K-9 handler is seen lifting a dog off the ground by its leash during a raid in Lewiston. The disturbing footage has sparked outrage and raised questions about the treatment of police dogs in high-stress situations.
The video shows the handler forcefully pulling the dog up by its leash, causing the animal to yelp in pain. Many viewers have expressed concern over the use of excessive force and the potential harm inflicted on the dog.
The Lewiston Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident and has stated that they take the well-being of their K-9 officers seriously. They have also emphasized the importance of proper training and handling techniques for their canine units.
Animal rights activists and concerned citizens are calling for accountability and transparency in the handling of police dogs, and are demanding that the responsible parties be held accountable for their actions.
As more information emerges about this incident, it is clear that the treatment of police dogs during operations must be closely monitored and regulated to ensure the safety and well-being of these loyal and dedicated animals.
