The Miami Dolphins are still waiting for their first NFL championship since 1974. A few teams playing for a spot in the 2025 Super Bowl are playing for their first ever, with one favorite last winning the title before it was even called the Super Bowl.
A disappointing 8-9 season means the Dolphins missed the NFL playoffs for the first time in three years. They’ll have to watch as the rival Buffalo Bills, who have won their division the past five seasons, host the Baltimore Ravens in one of the most highly anticipated playoff games in years. Buffalo made four straight Super Bowls in the 1990s but haven’t won one yet.
Meanwhile, the biggest upset of the playoffs game late Saturday night, as the Detroit Lions, who fell a game short of their first Super Bowl appearance last year, did so again. The Super Bowl favorites had five turnovers and couldn’t contain rookie QB Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders, 45-31, at Ford Field. The Commanders, now in their first NFC title game since the 1991 season, will visit either the Philadelphia Eagles or Los Angeles Rams next weekend with a Super Bowl berth on the line.
And don’t forget the two-time reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs, who beat Miami last season in one of the coldest NFL playoff games ever. They topped the Houston Texans, who have never reached the conference championship round, with a 23-14 victory at Arrowhead.

The Super Bowl will be played at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. This will be the eighth time the Superdome has hosted the Super Bowl and the 11th time New Orleans has hosted it. That’s tied for the most all time with Miami. The last time the Super Bowl was at the Superdome was 2013, when Joe Flacco led the Baltimore Ravens over Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers 34-31.

The NFL has said it is working with local, state and federal authorities to ensure security will be tight at the Super Bowl.
