Why are flags at half-staff today in Tennessee? What to know
Following the inauguration of President Donald Trump, flags across the Volunteer State and the country were lowered to their half-staff position.
In Tennessee, there are two reasons for the flags to be lowered, The first, is the mourning period for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away in his Plains, Georgia home on Dec. 29 at age 100.
The other reason for the flags to be lowered in Tennessee is to honor the victims of the school shooting at Antioch High School. Shots were fired at the Nashville high school just after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22 taking the life of one 16-year-old and injuring another 17-year-old student.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee ordered the flags to be lowered on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 23. He announced the decision on X, formerly known as Twitter.
When will American flags be raised to full-staff again?
Former president Joe Biden ordered all flags to be lowered for the 30 days following former president Jimmy Carter’s death, or until Wednesday, Jan. 29.
Were flags flown at full-staff on Inauguration Day in Tennessee?
Yes. In Tennessee, Lee ordered all flags to be flown high to celebrate President Trump’s inauguration from 11 a.m. CT on Jan. 20 through sunrise on Jan. 21.
Other states also hoisted the flags on Jan. 20, including Iowa, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Nebraska, Alabama, New York, California and Colorado.
Flags also flew at full-staff at the U.S. Capitol and were lowered the next day.
Who can order the flags to fly at half-staff?
Only the U.S. president, a state governor or the mayor of Washington, D.C. can order flags to fly at half-staff.
