Hang the banner: If the Detroit Lions win the Super Bowl, it’s all thanks to the Giants.
That’s what Lions coach — and ex-Giants tight end — Dan Campbell said when asked what the impetus was for Detroit’s 15-2 regular season, which continues Saturday when they face the Commanders in the Divisional Round.
Campbell said the Lions-Giants brawl-heavy joint practice back in August set the tone for the kind of tough matchups they’d face this season.

“I felt like the biggest adjustment for us was training camp out at New York,” Campbell said Thursday. “That was the first real taste of the perception. I thought the Giants, man… They practiced hard, they brought it.
“It was a lot of energy; a lot of juice. And I thought that was good for us to get that and it’s like now, you know what it’s going to be like all season, and we’ve handled it. I mean, we handle it well. We know we’re going to get everybody’s best shot.”
If only the Giants had found the same “juice.” With a 3-14 record and the longest losing streak in franchise history, the Giants had one of their worst seasons of the century in 2024. Detroit, meanwhile, is the betting favorite to win Super Bowl LIX, despite a slew of injuries to their impressive defense.

In a recent press conference, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell gave credit to the New York Giants for sparking his team’s successful season. Campbell mentioned how a tough loss to the Giants earlier in the season served as a wake-up call for the Lions, motivating them to improve and work harder.
Despite the disappointing defeat, Campbell pointed out that the loss forced the Lions to reevaluate their performance and make necessary adjustments. This newfound determination and resilience ultimately led to a string of victories and a strong finish to the season.
Campbell’s recognition of the Giants’ role in the Lions’ success serves as a reminder of the valuable lessons that can be learned from defeat. It highlights the importance of perseverance, resilience, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks. Ultimately, it is a testament to the power of adversity in driving teams to reach their full potential.
As the Lions continue to make strides in their season, it is clear that they have taken the lessons learned from their loss to the Giants to heart. With Campbell’s leadership and the team’s newfound motivation, the Lions are poised to finish the season strong and make a statement in the playoffs.
