Bitter cold air arrives next week, but a winter storm isn’t a sure thing yet.
GREENSBORO, N.C. — All the chatter about snow is pretty hard to miss right now. We’ve already had a winter storm, and another one is brewing for next week. You’ve come to the right place to get some honest info on the winter weather threats.
Simply put, we’re getting more confident a winter storm will hit North Carolina. However, it’s still unclear on exactly who will get snow and who will stay dry.
COLDEST DAYS IN YEARS ON THE WAY
We definitely know this. We have a real deal cold snap coming for early next week. We’re likely to drop below freezing on Sunday night and stay there until Thursday afternoon.
Think about that. That’s going to be a stretch of sub-freezing temperatures that could last close to 100 hours.
This cold air keeps open the possibility for winter weather, if a storm can form.
SO, IS THERE A STORM COMING?
Yes, it’s looking more likely that a winter storm will form and track across the South. It will actually start int Texas and Louisiana on Monday into Tuesday. From there, it will follow the jet stream and push eastward.
For Georgia and the Carolinas, the storm will be moving our way Tuesday night into Wednesday. The track is far enough south that parts of our region will stay dry, while others will see snow or ice.
This is a rare case where it appears the Coastal and Eastern parts of the Carolinas will have a better chance at winter weather than the Western Mountains and Piedmont.
Around here in the Triad, we have a chance of snow Tuesday night into Wednesday, but we look to be on the edge of dry air. It’s unclear just how far west the snow will stretch into our area.
WHAT DO WE KNOW?
Since we’re still 4-5 days away from any potential winter weather, there are things that we do know, but a lot we still don’t know yet. Here’s what we do know for now:
– Our air will be frigid. Lows in the 10s, highs around 30.
– There’s likely to be a winter storm in North Carolina, most likely Tuesday night into Wednesday.
– Any snow or ice that falls across the state will linger on the ground for days

– We look at these models a lot to help us forecast, but they usually are all over the place this far out and change constantly in this range.
– Your phone apps will have wild predictions and changes, too. Don’t use those for winter weather.
– There’s no need to go crazy or run to the store.
