A looming winter storm could bring three or more inches of snow to the Indianapolis area this weekend and into next week.
The National Weather Service in Indianapolis says meteorologists are also monitoring potential weather systems that could bring snow to the northern parts of Central Indiana as soon as Thursday.
That’s in addition to a winter storm slated to impact the area Sunday and Monday, bringing potentially “significant snow” to Indianapolis and surrounding areas.
“We’re looking at the potential of 3+ inches of snow” in Indianapolis, said NWS Indianapolis meteorologist Aaron Updike.
It’s unclear where the greatest impacts will be, according to the NWS. That should become more clear later this week, Updike said.
“Right now, there’s still a lot of questions with it,” Updike said. “We’re a little too early in the process to pinpoint specifics on snow totals.”
Indianapolis is among many cities likely to accumulate snow as part of the “major snowstorm (that) is forecast from a large part of Nebraska to southern and central Ohio and West Virginia,” according to Accuweather. Others include St. Louis; Kansas City; Springfield, Illinois; Cincinnati; and Dayton, Ohio.
“The heavy snow will fall along much of the I-70 corridor in this zone,” according to Accuweather.
For now, residents should monitor the weather forecast for updates and prepare for potential travel impacts this weekend and into the next week.
“We want to make sure we raise that awareness,” Updike said. “Know that impact to weather is possible starting Sunday afternoon, continuing to Sunday night and Monday morning. That could impact travel plans over the weekend and that Monday morning commute.”
